So What Is This Markdown.com That Glenn Just Launched?

Do you love bargains?  Who doesn’t!  Enter Markdown.com, a new initiative brought to you by Glenn Beck and his company Mercury Radio Arts.  Markdown is a “social-buying site” that greatly differs from its e-commerce competitors.  Rather than focusing on mere profit and financial gain, Markdown is guided by principles and ideals that, as its web site boasts, “transcend money.”

So What Is This Markdown.com That Glenn Just Launched?

So, what does this really mean, you ask?  Rather than focusing only on the bottom line, Markdown seeks out viable and notable deals that offer great value in more ways than one.  Unlike its competitors, Markdown will only e-mail you with deals that are truly worthwhile. Members aren’t bombarded with daily e-mails that offer less-than-stellar savings. With Markdown, it’s all about quality.

In an interview with The Blaze, Markdown’s president, Keith Ferry, explained that this idea has been in the works for years.  The concept is purely relational and the overarching goal is to provide offers that benefit consumers. Ferry says:

“Markdown offers deals that we’ve curated specifically for an audience that we know well and have created a relationship with over the past 10 years.”

Plus, the companies and deals that are presented have meaning and purpose. Markdown’s opening deal offers $20 worth of goodies from Chocolate.com (a company that serves small businesses across the nation) for half the price.

A natural question that many are asking is how Markdown differs from GroupOn, Living Social and other competitors.  According to Ferry:

“The first key difference is that we’re not offering local deals. All of the deals you’ll see on the site are national, or at least deals with companies that can scale nationally.  Second, we will only be sending one or two deals per week initially, because we know our audience so well.”

Ferry explains that Markdown’s mission is to make sure that each deal is a good one for consumers.  Earlier today, on the blog, Meredith Jessup posted Glenn’s comments about Markdown:

“Markdown is a place where I will be able to connect you directly with the products and retailers that I love. From the best ice cream in America that you’ve never heard of, to a great summer beach read, to exclusive discounts at the name brand retailers you already know by heart-Markdown will offer all of that and more. But, best of all, Markdown is a place where my personal slogan–value and values–will be brought to life.”

Perhaps the most unique feature is a referral program that offers consumers an easy way to secure an even deeper discount on the deals presented on Markdown.com.  Here’s how it works: You take advantage of a deal on Markdown. Then, you refer friends and family. For every individual you referred who buys the product or service, you get 10 percent off. So, if you can convince 10 people to take part in the deal, yours is free!

Don’t waste any time. Head over to Markdown today to take advantage of the excellent Chocolate.com offer and take a moment to watch Glenn talk about Markdown:

Editor’s note: Glenn Beck’s Mercury Radio Arts also owns TheBlaze.com. We welcome Markdown.com as a sister company!

    I love conservatism. And these socialist trolls are so girliefied. Queer, actually.

    My sister-in-law is a liberal, and she sits at home all day and clasps herself in ecstacy while the socialists in the White House–being manipulated by God only knows who–dance around on the tarmac beside AF-1 like marionettes and flit off to some place foreign so that the unseen government can do its toil while the puppet is away. When they are done with Obama he will be as insignificant as the guy with the hard on in Paris Hilton’s sex tapes. damn I’m good.

    To Tomservo. Hey, man, I speak to God every day. It is called prayer. So, wot’s so odd about Beck doing it? You need to click over to your pals at gaynation.org and give them the benefit of your cleverness. Or, an alternative, try talking to God like Beck and I do for a change. He never calls you queer or berates you for being a liberal democrat. He’s a good guy…you’ll love him, and He will love you.

    Secure the high grounds (top). Who have the high grounds as of now? Remember the bailouts. Power structures are dismantled and built systematically in phases, not by sheer coincidences. An environment needs to be created the best we can where corruption and cronyism is punished as it should be according to law. “Restoring Honor”. Are there power entities willing to bend and change the rules, regulations, legislations, laws, etc., to suit the needs of its’ allies? Of course there is. We choose; “there is values and there is value”. Principled minded men and women are appreciated by me and needed more than ever in my opinion. Successful Entrepreneurs, financial independence, economic freedom, and liberty courtesy of our capitalist “free market” system ran by principled men and women. Up to me, or you, or us, or them, or not.

To do otherwise is to promote a closed and autocratic system. Now stop being such a baby, you can handle some differing opinions can’t you?

    Why is this posted in the Blaze‘s ’news’ section? This self promotion of one of Glen’s companies in the news section is just plain wrong. I believe in capitalism but this so-called story smells like an advertisement to me.

    “Markdown is a “social-buying site” that greatly differs from its e-commerce competitors. Rather than focusing on mere profit and financial gain, Markdown is guided by principles and ideals that, as its web site boasts, “transcend money.”

    If Markdown is a for-profit business that does not care about profits and financial gain as its own description alludes to, then this company will not be around for very long. Unless this description is deceptive to make people think its for a “good cause” instead of putting more money into the pockets of Mr. Beck.

      One thing I want to know is the cost of shipping. So many of these “low cost” websites get you on the unreasonable shipping costs which the surplus fee lands in their pockets. I have to agree it all does feel a bit like self promotion than news. However, what is the difference if this company or any other company advertises on The Blaze? Anymore story lines about this opportunity would in my opinion be very self serving and annoying. If it continued, I would have to rethink my visits to the Blaze for news

      By all means this can be done, as capitalism is fantastic, but it comes off as slimy… essentially relying on the readers here to make money for Beck and to spam their friends with invitations. As someone sick of social media spam already, I for one will NOT be taking part in this.

      Honestly, I doubt I’ll do much shopping on Markdown.com based mostly on that part of it. If it’s a great deal, it’ll stand on its own. If a larger number of consumers show up to purchase, then just knock the price down for everyone, don’t make me become your salesman so I can get my own, personal discount. Blech.

    I have to agree that this seems opportunitistic of Beck. Other than not being local companies, it still is a marketing ploy that makes them money at the expense of the company’s pretty much giving away product (after discount and incurring their cost) in return for the exposure. Given it’s voluntary for businesses to participate, but I don’t see the real value with this one…or how it does anything else except further promote Glenn’s brand.

In the real world we don’t give money to people we admire and appreciate, like Mr. Beck, we give him our time, we give him our attention without a doubt, and most importantly and undoubtedly the most difficult for mental midgets like you and your brethren to grasp the depth and meaning of, we give the great man our undying respect. @hauschild, you’re right, you have the freedom to do whatever you choose. As far as my “wish of having the majority of Americans being slugs,” I wish you wouldn’t put words in my mouth that way. Seems like it would be less slug-like to have people out in their towns (walking, maybe?), buying products and supporting local businesses.

      @TOMSERVO

      Can you define “supporting local business”?

      Does it make sense to buy something locally if you can get it much cheaper from somewhere else? If it makes sense to you, then please explain how it makes sense.

      I’d prefer the free market to determine where I buy. If I find something cheaper elsewhere, I buy it. The local guy either drops his price, or he goes out of business, OR he finds a way to provide the same product faster or more conveniently.

      You might not understand this (and I doubt you do), but there are a lot of factors that go into a purchasing decision. Sometimes it has little to do with price. Sometimes, it has nothing to do with “local”….and for some people, it shouldn’t. It‘s each person’s choice. Who are you to dictate to me the morality of my purchases?

      Crimeny.

Quit whining like a bunch of sniveling brats. Glenn does not force anyone to support him or his business adventures. You know why you hate Beck so much? It‘s because he’s everything you’re not. Successful, independent, & humble. He’s been to hell and back and come out on top because he admitted all his shortcomings. You’re still flailing around in your misery trying to blame all your problems on everyone else when 99% is due to your own stupid mistakes. Don’t like him, LEAVE! Instead of talking about the article, we get wrapped up fighting with a couple of people who just want to start a fight. Of course you do, it’s a great idea. In fact, I’m even willing to pay more for something made in the USA than a very similar product made in China.

      Now, take this concept. Keep in mind that there are local economies (ie, a city or state) within the United States, the same way there are local economies (ie, the USA or China) on earth.

      ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
      There we have the mental block – your gross generalizations and assumptions.
      I don’t think it makes sense to make everything in America. Do you? Do you like paying $4.99 for a hair dryer at Walmart?
      If we made that hair dryer here, it’d be $40.00 and weigh 8 lbs. You’d have to take it to a repair man when it broke down, because it’s so expensive to purchase new. When the $5 hair dryer lasts 4 – 5 years, I feel like I got more than my money’s worth from it, and it doesn’t bother me to dispose of it and purchase a new one – sometimes at an even cheaper price, and possibly with newer features available (like the built-in GFI plug).
      You don’t seem to have much of a concept of manufacturing, or of how innovation works in the free market. Stick to name-calling, that‘s something you’ve got down to a science.
      @Jaycen, yet again, you are the one simplifying arguments past the point of usefulness. Yes, you have come up with an example of something that should not necessarily be bought locally. Shockingly, the world does not work in black and white! However, many things could and should be purchased locally. You know what would be great example of something to purchase locally? Chocolate. Specifically:
      “Chocolate popcorn, chocolate bars, chocolate brownies, chocolate fudge, chocolate cookies, chocolate fruit, chocolate pretzels, chocolate popcorn, chocolate potato chips, chocolate pizzas, chocolate truffles, chocolate covered cake balls and chocolate bacon. Yes, chocolate covered bacon.” – Markdown.com
      Please, man, what’s your point?
      I simplify the argument so you can understand it. You complicate the argument so no one can. My simple argument applies equally well to any product or service.
      Your argument is the “simplistic” one – “Buy locally to support local business owners.”
      What’s magical about “local”? Isn’t a business owner on your street just as important as one on mine? By your own failed logic, if I purchase something from your local business man, doesn’t that make him more successful and thus make you even happier?
      Maybe when you say “local”, you really mean “not connected to Glenn Beck”? Perhaps? A little?
      @Jaycen, you said:
      “Isn’t a business owner on your street just as important as one on mine?”
      Depends, is the business owner on your street the douche-of-the-universe?
      In all seriousness though, what’s not to understand? I live in one part of the United States. While it is important for me that the economy of the whole country be supported, if I have a choice between buying something from a store across the country or one across the street, I’ll go across the street because it puts money directly back into my local economy. You know how the unemployment rate or budget deficits may be different in one part of the country than another? People can actually impact this! Now, I COULD go buy a car in Mexico and bring it across the border, but that would not be supporting the US economy. It’s the same concept.
      THAT is the difference between Glenn Beck and Harold Camping … you can use facts to back up Glenn’s statements, especially the Bible … or to refute Camping claims … again, using the Bible.
