So Who in Congress Voted Against ‘In God We Trust?’

Congress Votes to Reaffirm In God We Trust National MottoOn Tuesday, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a non-binding resolution reaffirming “In God We Trust” as the national motto.

For those in America who believe that faith and religion are under attack, this was likely a welcome development. Others, though, criticized the vote at a waste of Congressional time.

The measure, sponsored by Rep. Randy Forbes (R-VA), supports and encourages the motto’s display in all public schools and government buildings. It was approved 396-9, with 2 abstentions. With 91 percent of representatives voting in favor of the measure, it’s intriguing to look at the 2 percent who voted against it.

GovTrack.us provides the information on who voted “no” in the graphic, below:

Congress Votes to Reaffirm In God We Trust National Motto

As you can see from the image, eight of those voting “nay” are Democrats, with one Republican rejecting the “In God We Trust” motto vote. Keith Ellison (D-MN) and Melvin Watt (D-NC) voted “present,” while numerous others, including GOP presidential candidate Michele Bachmann, were not there to cast a vote.

Forbes said the resolution was needed because President Barack Obama had once called “E pluribus unum” the national motto, and the Latin phrase meaning “from many one” was engraved in the new Capitol Visitors Center until Congress ordered that it be corrected.

Watch the president make this statement, below:

Rep. Trent Franks (R-AZ) joined Forbes, among 395 others, in supporting the measure:

But not everyone saw Congress’ handling of this as time well spent. Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), who voted “nay,” called the resolution a meaningless distraction from the nation’s real problems.

“Nobody is threatening the national motto,” he said. Considering past efforts to have the motto removed, though, Nadler‘s comments aren’t entirely accurate. Still, there’s no evidence that Obama, the target of Forbes’ comments, is attempting to endorse such a change.

Rep. Bobby Scott (D-VA), shares these feelings and claims that the nation has bigger problems, including the economy, failing schools and poverty. ”Instead of facing these challenges and creating jobs to help American people make sure they have a roof over their head and food on their table, we are debating whether or not to affirm and proliferate a motto that was adopted in 1956 and is under no threat of attack,” Scott said.

Russia Today apparently agreed wholeheartedly with the Democrats’ sentiments on the matter:

Amash, the sole Republican to side with Democrats on the matter, admitted that he believes it’s appropriate to display the motto on public property “in some circumstances,” but that ”there is no need to push for the phrase to be on all federal, state, and local buildings.”

“The fear that unless ‘In God We Trust’ is displayed throughout the government, Americans will somehow lose their faith in God, is a dim view of the profound religious convictions many citizens have,” he continued. ”Trying to score political points with unnecessary resolutions should not be Congress’s priority.”

“In God We Trust” first appeared on U.S. coins during the Civil War in 1864. It officially became the national motto in 1956 and began appearing on paper currency the following year.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

While I agree with what the House passed, how about showing real guts and passing legislation that puts their benefits on par with middle America – like Social Security, no lifetime benefits, etc… It won’t happen and as far as I know, no congressperson has yet to introduce such legislatioin?

Actually, they already do. They have the same pension plan that other civil servants have. In 1984, Congress was put under the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS). In is based mostly on Social Security with a small payment from the Government, a Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) which is an IRA, with a 5% match from the Government. An employee under age 50 is allowed to put 15% or up to $22,500 a year into their accounts. After age 50, they are allowed to put up to $50,000, but the Government only matches the first 5%. Health insurance is pooled, with employees allowed to pick the best plan for their needs. A Blue Cross Family Plan costs the employee about $12,000 a year out of pocket. These plans are available to any Federal civilian employee, the military is different, of course.

Stop thinking about government creating jobs. Stop thinking about government improving education. Dismantle the DOE and send the education funds back to the states. The states can create goals and achievement tests and standards without all the PC BS that will get added into it by Washington lifetime bureaucrats. They can create nationally accepted standards without federal oversight. Congress should make laws to eliminate income taxes in favor of a VAT, adoptable by each state on the sole condition that is replaces all taxes with a revenue sharing formula — including Social Security taxes and Medicare/Medicaid funds. Congress needs to MAN UP and get on with really important legislation.

was trying to indicate that ALL federal employees should be on a similar plan – similar to the rest of us. Many companies no longer have pension plans, 401K plans match 25 or 50 cents on the dollar for those that offer them. And as for health care plans that we can choose from…really?

Ben, do you have any idea how dangerous a VAT is? Since most of the taxes are hidden in stages prior to retail, government mobsters pretty much have free reign to manipulate the rates.

I do agree with a consumption tax or Fair Tax to replace the current code. However, it absolutely must be visible and very difficult to increase the rate.

      Hey Guys,

Think about it…If I created in IOU to you for $100 and wrote “In God We Trust” on it; then wouldn’t you think that the “WE” implied that both of us bide our trusts in God?

Now, after thinking of it this way, and considering that the IOU comes as a “Federal Reserve Note”, which is about as ‘Federal’ & ‘Honest’ as a Chinese-made imported plaster-of-paris buddah, what does that phrase NOW mean, on that Federal Reserve Note?

      Just thinking aloud.

The portrait on the money is always someone who was either a staunch opponent to the central banks, or someone who was duped into helping the central bank and regretted it later. I am posting this because it irritates me how the money changers use the people who tried to rout them out as their poster boys. It truly shows that history is written by the victors. Whenever you count their money, and believe that it is yours, you should know that the face on the bills and coins are frowning upon you.

Abraham Lincoln hated the idea of a central bank so much that he created his own money to replace it. These are called “Greenbacks”. He was assasinated for this reason. He said, “I see in the near future a crisis approaching that unnerves me and causes me to tremble for the safety of my country. As a result of the war, corporations have been enthroned and an era of corruption in high places will follow, and the money power of the country will endeavor to prolong its reign by working upon the prejudices of the people until all wealth is aggregated in a few hands, and the Republic is destroyed. I feel at this moment more anxiety for the safety of my country than ever before, even in the midst of war.”

I am an Enemy to all banks discounting bills or notes for anything but Coin. If the American People allow private banks to control the issuance of their currency, first by inflation and then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around them will deprive the People of all their Property until their Children will wake up homeless on the continent their Fathers conquered.”

      .10 The Dime. Franklin Roosevelt.
FDR said in his innaugural address, “Practices of the unscrupulous money changers stand indicted in the court of public opinion, rejected by the hearts and minds of men. True they have tried, but their efforts have been cast in the pattern of an outworn tradition. Faced by failure of credit they have proposed only the lending of more money. Stripped of the lure of profit by which to induce our people to follow their false leadership, they have resorted to exhortations, pleading tearfully for restored confidence….The money changers have fled from their high seats in the temple of our civilization. We may now restore that temple to the ancient truths. The measure of the restoration lies in the extent to which we apply social values more noble than mere monetary profit”.

      .25 The Quarter. George Washington.
George Washington signed into law the First National Bank. It was suggested to him by the Secretary of the Treasury at the time, Alexander Hamilton. Also in Washington’s cabinet at the time was Thomas Jefferson, Secretary of State. It is important here to understand that George Washington was an isolationist. He did not want anything to do with foreign trade. This is counter-productive to the moneychangers philosophy. He was quoted as saying “The great rule of conduct for us, in regard to foreign nations, is in extending our commercial relations to have as little political connection as possible… Why, by interweaving our destiny with that of any part of Europe, entangle our peace and prosperity in the toils of European ambition, rivalships, interest, humor, or caprice?… It is our true policy to steer clear of permanent alliances with any portion of the foreign world.”

It is a system which has conscripted vast human and material resources into the building of a tightly knit, highly efficient machine that combines military, diplomatic, intelligence, economic, scientific and political operations. Its preparations are concealed, not published. Its mistakes are buried not headlined. Its dissenters are silenced, not praised. No expenditure is questioned, no rumor is printed, no secret is revealed.” He was also assassinated.

Eisenhower audited Ft. Knox. It is the last time this has been done. He did not like what he found. Ike warned us against the insiders at his farewell address when he said, “In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist.”

$10.00 The Ten Dollar Bill. Alexander Hamilton.
Alexander Hamilton was George Washington’s Secretary of the Treasury, and he suggested The First National Bank. He was also a Protectionist and an Isolationist much like George Washington. He believed in taxing or discouraging imports and anti-globalization. He wanted nothing to do with Europe but was played like a pawn. Hamilton was bought by the money changers and at one point said “A national debt, if it is not excessive, will be to us a national blessing.”

$20.00 The Twenty Dollar Bill. Andrew Jackson.
Andrew Jackson once said, when asked what his greatest accomplishment as President was that “I killed the Bank.” Jackson detested the foreign bankers and their minions and once proclaimed to Congress, “You are a den of vipers and thieves and I intend to rout you out, and by the eternal God, I will rout you out. If Congress has the right to issue paper money, it was given them to be used by themselves, and not to be delegated to individuals or corporations..” He vetoed the Banks re-charter and succeeded in removing them. He survived his assassination attempt.

$50.00 The Fifty Dollar Bill. Ulysses Grant.
Ulysses S. Grant had the power to bring the Central Bank back but refused. He was Abraham Lincolns friend, and was assaulted the same night Lincoln was assassinated. He was supposed to be at Ford Theatre. He was quoted as saying “My failures have been errors of judgment, not of intent.”

@BAH054, Yes, really. I only get 5% of my contributions matched, so, the Government isn’t as generous as the private sector. I wanted to see these insurance pools created with the Healthcare reform bill, but Republicans wouldn’t allow it. But, you do have insurance plans you can choose from, some cheaper than mine, it’s called the Free Market. If you don’t like what your employer contracts for, do that. When unions were strong, companies dealt with them and employees got great benefits. Some of the largest companies, who scream so loud about union oppression and not being able to afford union benefit plans deal with unions in other countries. Why? Because in those other country, they are forced to deal the unions or they don’t operate. Every other developed country has either national (single payer) health care or national health insurance. Why is the United States so far out of the loop? Why is the distribution of wealth in this country, the GINI Index, equivilent to a third world country? If we are the greatest country in the world, why do other, lesser countries have these things and we don’t? Oh, and we have a lower life expectancy than these countries and we pay more for it, too. Why is that, really?

when discussing the failure of the System of National Banks. Lincolnian in philosophy, Grant hated the money changers.

$100.00 The One Hundred Dollar Bill. Benjamin Franklin.
Franklin did not want a Central Bank. “In the Colonies, we issue our own paper money. It is called ‘Colonial Scrip.’ We issue it in proper proportion to make the goods and pass easily from the producers to the consumers. In this manner, creating ourselves our own paper money, we control its purchasing power and we have no interest to pay to no one.” And he also wrote, “The viability of the colonists to get power to issue their own money permanently out of the hands of King George III and the international bankers was the prime reason for the revolutionary war.”

$500.00 The Five Hundred Dollar Bill. William McKinley.
McKinley went directly at the Rothschilds when he launched The Sherman Anti-Trust Act. He opposed any Central Bank stating, “Our financial system needs some revision; our money is all good now, but its value must not further be threatened. It should all be put upon an enduring basis,
not subject to easy attack, nor its stability to doubt or dispute. Our currency should continue under the supervision of the Government. The several forms of our paper money offer, in my judgment, a constant embarrassment to the Government and a safe balance in the Treasury.”

$1000.00 The One Thousand Dollar Bill. Grover Cleveland.
Grover Cleveland saw through the money changers. “The ship of democracy, which has weathered all storms, may sink through the mutiny of those on board.” Like Garfield before him, Grover Cleveland was Jeffersonian in his beliefs of the dangers of a Central Bank. Another Gold Standard President, he said in his inaugural address, “We should never be ashamed of the simplicity and prudential economies which are best suited to the operation of a republican form of government and most compatible with the mission of the American people.”

$5000.00 The Five Thousand Dollar Bill. James Madison.
Madison vehemetly opposed the Central Bank and those who quietly control them. “History records that the money changers have used every form of abuse, intrigue, deceit, and violent means possible to maintain their control over governments by controlling money and it’s issuance.” Madison was later forced into signing the charter for The Second Bank of the United States.

$10,000.00 The Ten Thousand Dollar Bill. Salmon Chase.
Salmon Chase was U.S. Treasury Secretary under Abraham Lincoln. Along with Lincoln he helped to create “Greenbacks”. The Chase Bank is named after him, although he had no affiliation with it’s owners. His name is their trophy. Salmon Chase later said,

$100,000.00 The One Hundred Thousand Dollar Bill. Woodrow Wilson.
Woodrow Wilson was tricked into signing the current Central Bank, The Federal Reserve, into law in 1913. He was very upset at what he had done and said, “I am a most unhappy man. I have unwittingly ruined my country. A great industrial nation is controlled by its system of credit. Our system of credit is concentrated. The growth of the nation, therefore, and all our activities are in the hands of a few men. We have come to be one of the worst ruled, one of the most completely controlled and dominated Governments in the civilized world no longer a Government by free opinion, no longer a Government by conviction and the vote of the majority, but a Government by the opinion and duress of a small group of dominant men.”

@TxSon A consumption tax would be ridiculously regressive in nature. As far as a fair tax a minimum graduated say 5 to 25% based on gross income that everyone must pay on all income (including capital gains) would make sense. I would also suggest this should be applied to corporations. People complain about tax rates but rarely take the time to realize that the wealthy and large corporations benefit from nonsensical tax deductions, write offs and credits. Everyone should pay something and clearly the wealthy should a higher amount.

The OCCUPIERS have created a new cult of covetousness. That’s why they despise Christians. They are very hard core materialistic wealth confiscators. Wealth is not a zero sum game. Wealth is created by the exchange of value for value. Leftists want to take away half the equation and go for the gold without working for it.

Those who believe unions are their champions haven’t studied history, or they have studied perversions of it. Unions are champion at one thing and one thing only, suppressing individual prosperity and achievement.

What a frickin waste of time! The founders didn’t think it necessary to have “In God We Trust” so why do we?**

Agreed, however. I believe the point in putting in God We Trust on our money could be for two possible reasons:

      1) Most would think it is to remind the American people who tend to become complacent that One greater than man has granted their rights.

      2) I believe it was done to turn money into our god. A subtle move, yes. One can serve either God or Money, but not both. Idols can be many things, but currency is definitely one.

Nature’s God is what this nation was founded upon. Traces of the divine are carved throughout the history of this country if any care to look.

They don‘t want to acknowledge God but when their lives are at stake they will cry out to God and he won’t be there. They took prayer out of schools and ask when there is a shooting, “where was God when all this happpened”. Well, they took God out and then they complain when something bad happens? I think the vote was important simply because every single time Obama lies about our motto another person that doesn’t know any better believes what he says. Pretty much like the lie that his jobs bill has failed to get the vote of the R’s. He doesn’t tell the people that are too busy to keep up with politics that its the senate democrats that keep voting against it. Or the lie that we are a democracy, you ask people on the street and a shocking number will say we are a democracy because they keep hearing the D’s say we are instead of the republic we actually are.

And like drphil69 says, everything congress votes on the senate rejects anyhow.

ENCIDIOT…understanding that SEAL Team 6 doesn’t even “officially” exist and that their identities are to be kept strictly confidential to protect them and their families…it’s quite ludicrous to have an “official” “yay SEAL Team 6” measure passed in Congress. Now..Joe Biden couldnt’ keep his mouth shut about them as usual and Obama spiked the ball for a week after the OBL killing. Secretary Gates said this:

“Frankly, a week ago Sunday, in the Situation Room, we all agreed that we would not release any operational details from the effort to take out bin Laden. That all fell apart on Monday, the next day.
We are very concerned about the security of our families – of your families and our troops, and also these elite units that are engaged in things like that. And without getting into any details… I would tell you that when I met with the team… they expressed a concern about that, and particularly with respect to their families. “….You’ll recall ENCIDIOT that “A military helicopter was shot down in eastern Afghanistan, killing 31 US special operation troops, most of them from the elite Navy SEALs unit that killed al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, along with seven Afghan commandos.” The GOP was right NOT to hold celebrations in congress ENCIDIOT, unlike the Democrats who were desperate to use the kiling of OBL for political gain regardless of the danger to the SEALs and their families.
      How stupid are you ENCIDIOT?

While it looks like it’s a good thing to do, all this bill is is pandering to select interest groups which is NOT what Congress should be doing.

We do Trust in God, but the sanctity of His Holy Being does not need it stamped everywhere at the public’s cost to keep it so. Let’s move on to bigger and more pressing things, like repairing this sinking ship that is our economy.

If we actually follow the teachings in the bible we would not be in the trouble we are in. Honest dealings prevent corruption and blackmail from activists. Faith in God means it is easier to make the right choices even when the secular world tells you otherwise. Living by the letter of mans law leads to ruin. True Christians do not force their beliefs on others; they try to live good lives as examples that lead others away from deception. This was not a waste of time; it was an affirmation that people cannot solve the problems of the world without God. Thus, “In God We Trust”

Don’t wait to vote them out, it is time to recall them, I agree with you people like these morons have no clue what the American culture is based upon. They do not deserve to be a part of our government.

      @John Paul Jones
That’s funny, but since the start, America has been a secular nation. The Founders removed God from the government. It wasn‘t untill the 1950’s did short sighted fools in congress put God back in.

      Encinom

“The Founders removed God from the government.”

Really? How do you come to that conclusion? Is it because the Constitution says the “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;“ You mindless liberals see the first statement ”Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion“ but ignore ”or prohibiting the free exercise thereof”. So the founders didn’t remove God from the Government but instead prevented Congress from establishing a national religion like in England.

You are the typical liberal that suffers from not being able to comprehend what you read or exercise any type of Critical Thinking. Must be that gene that all liberals are born without.
