Soap Actor Commits Suicide After Having to Put Down His Own Dog

Soap Actor Commits Suicide after Having to Put Down His Own Dog

A struggling soap-opera actor has reportedly taken his own life following regret after euthanizing his dog due to pressure from his Upper West Side condo management.

The New York Post reports that friends of 47-year-old Nick Santino say that the actor wrote in his suicide note “Today I betrayed my best friend and put down my best friend.”

“Rocco trusted me and I failed him. He didn’t deserve this.”

Soap Actor Commits Suicide after Having to Put Down His Own Dog

US Weekly reports that Santino had appeared on seven episodes of All My Children and six episodes of Guiding Light, and had been feeling “harassed” by his building management company, according to his neighbor Lia Pettigrew. US reports on the sad turn of events:

“He was allegedly threatened with a $250 fine for having a barking dog, but according to neighbor Kevan Cleary, ‘the dog was not a barker, but somebody complained that the dog would bark.’

Santino phoned a former girlfriend at 2 a.m. Wednesday. Police found Santino’s body in his bedroom later that afternoon. The actor had overdosed on pills.”

Rocco was Euthanized on Santino’s birthday. The Post reports that Santino was born in Brooklyn and raised in an orphanage and foster homes. The actor adopted Rocco from a shelter several years ago, and often mentioned his pet on Facebook, writing “I did not rescue Rocco, Rocco rescued me.”

The Post reports that Rocco has been cremated, and friends said Santino’s remains will be too, and they will be reunited.

NY Post:

A member of the condo board that soap actor Nick Santino said pressured him to euthanize his pit bull — a “betrayal” that drove him to suicide — refused to accept any responsibility for the double tragedy yesterday.

“I’m sorry the man is dead,” board member Marilyn Fireman barked to The Post, “But it has nothing to do with the pet policy.”

“You just assumed that [his suicide] was a result of a board’s decision,” Fireman said, even though Santino routinely griped about the building’s anti-dog policies.

Heartbroken relatives of the actor — who had stints on “All My Children” and “Guiding Light” — have retrieved the ashes of Rocco and plan to place them beside Santino’s body when he is laid to rest.

He obviously had issues besides the dog. He shoulda just paid the fine and said the hell with the condos, or moved something, but killing yourself over a dog is ludicrous. 1 less moronic hollywood type is no great loss….The dog on the other hand is a tragic loss….

Seriously, dude, give this poor guy a break: he obviously had problems beyond his condo board. Did you read the obituary? It says he was placed in an orphanage when he was five months old and spend his whole childhood in orphanages; he never met any of his blood relatives. How lonely must that be? And to know they gave you up? Then he worked as a garbageman and tried to get an acting career together. He obviously identified with that rescued dog as another unwanted creature that just looking for someone to love in New York City, which can be a scary, lonely place. And it‘s not so easy to just pack up and move in NYC when you’re a broke actor. His reaction to the dog’s death shows how much he cared about his companion. Maybe instead of attacking him we could just pray that he and Rocco are together and happy.

Give him a break, an example of bad judgement though it’s a very sad story, no buts about that! I don‘t understand anyone’s reasoning for choosing NYC for a home. No job is worth it. I am glad that Glenn Beck finally got his family out of there. New Yorkers are generally rude, uppity, snarky, paranoid progressives. Perhaps the dog was his only true friend. Hope the two friends are together forever in another realm.

Once, to share one’s thoughts with the world, you’d have to write a letter to the editor and hope it would be published. Now, through the marvels of technology, one can spill one’s thoughts freely and quickly … too freely and quickly. With anonymity and without introspection, callous thinking has become more the rule than the exception. Even from the scant few lines of this story, it‘s not hard to guess that there were a lot of things going wrong in this guy’s life. I think his solution to his woes was wrong, but I can certainly reserve a little sympathy for him.

It seems the villians are building management, and the condo board led by Marilyn Fireman. Her lack of empathy could have cast her as a villianous in a Dicken’s novel. UGH!
Marilyn can say a million times, “I’m sorry the man is dead but it has nothing to do with the pet policy”,
but it is not true and two beings are dead because of it.
Karma exists Marilyn and other condo board members. It exists and it’s a B*#CH!
May you all enjoy the karma of your deed.

Question; Why was a healthy young dog put down at the shelter before them even attempting to find it a new home?

Well I cant adress all of you by name but I kinda went off when I read he had put the animal down and I dont apologize for it either. Someone said “noone was there for him” or something, so the guy is some rich actor stud soap opera star and he’s all alone in this world? Whatever. And ‘Ironman” you arent gonna tell me where or what to post got it? I gave my opinion and I dont think he should have killed the dog period, and he must have been a weakling that wasnt very bright either and apperantly fits the actor-criteria perfectly. I have a very very soft spot in my heart for animals, my house /property is full of animals people didnt want and every spare dime I make goes to the care of animals and here’s my philosophy “If you cant give them a good life for life then dont get them” they are something with a heart and a brain and not a cool ornament on your coffee table and if he wasnt supposed to have pets there then he shouldnt have moved there in the first place. How can someone manage to be on a T.V. show that prolly 90% of other people would like to do and be that stupid and lost as some of you say? Sorry but if you kill animals especially a loyal pet that belongs to you for pretty much nothing then I dont have much if any sympathy for the guy. I personally think that anyone who kills or abuses animals I wouldnt trust around a small child. I take none of it back nor will I revisit this because I have spoken my peace.

You had an emotional reaction, but then so did this guy. As a Christian, I try to look at situations from God’s perspective first. Suicide is the devil’s answer to suffering, so the odds are this tormented soul is not in a better place. OTOH, his dog did not suffer. Aside from the disturbing fact that he was euthanized while in good health, there is no chance that his soul is in h*ll. If you see things from an eternal perspective, you will have compassion for those who have mental and spiritual strongholds that crush them and eventually cause them to die unsaved.

I understand your anger. It came from a sincere love for pets. After all, they are one of the greatest gifts God could have bestowed on our fallen race. However, we are the only creatures on planet Earth that can be d@mned, and I dare say most people in h*ll suffered here on earth as well. This guy certainly did.

You won’t stop being a man if you find some compassion in your heart for those who suffer in life. It will just make you MORE LIKE JESUS. Peace.

      Lesson learned from this:

Do not buy a dog if you live in a place that does not allow them.

If you are not able to keep a dog, give it to some one who can.

Do not be an actor on a soap opra, as many of them are gay and weird.

If you are gay, read your Bible, and figure out that you can get forgiveness for every sin but one. that one is denying truth.

Have a heart, you bastard. That goes for anyone who can’t seem to feel any sympathy that a tormented man is dead. I understand where he came from. There was a point in my life where I might have done the same thing. I would have ended up killing myself too probably. My dog saved my life too – I know exactly what he means by that. It’s only with time that I have been saved though, you don’t heal instantly. He still had a ways to go. I would never give my dog up now – I would defend him with my life – but a while ago, before I healed, I might have. This man wasn’t an idiot – he was in pain. Next time you are in the kind of state that this man was in (I pray that you never are – I know that pain) you make rational decisions. Go ahead, try. It’s not possible. So once again: you’re a heartless bastard.

We actually have MORE heart than those who would say they sympathize with this man’s pain, because they are the ones perpetuating a philosophy that humanizes animals.

Up front we know he killed a dog, then murdered his own self.

He was a soap opra actor, and looks a bit feminine to me.

I am not sure if he was gay, but he looks that way, and I know that statistically gay folks have very high suicide rates. Some call this critical thinking. I have no way of knowing why he killed himself. I can only read the story, and see that he had some real issues. Pretty obvious he had issues by his actions

Well now he can go to Rainbow bridge with his dog and cross over together.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together….

      Author unknown…

This is where I’m going when I die.

I see a person that complied to authority,

I agree with Kiba. I have a cat, and I would do anything besides THAT to her. Pets are a responsibility, and you cannot just throw away their life just because it causes you some inconvenience. Anyone that does, is not only a failure as a pet owner, but a failure as a human being. This guy made a mistake, and I think in the end paid an appropriate price for killing someone he loved.. I only wished that he would have realized this BEFORE he had his dog put down, then two lives could have been saved.

I’d put a person down, before I would put my pet down…. I love my pet, and she trusts that I will take care of her. I will never disappoint in that regard, no matter what the consequence.

PETS are a responsibility, and anyone that doesn’t realize that, doesn’t deserve to have any..

      Shame….

I am so sorry for the loss… for both of you. You had so much, yet you left us so soon. Perhaps, too soon. I have a friend, Sam, who I almost lost in 2009. He’s a cat, but I know the love there. I can only think, though, that other pressures would have led to my death other than what occurred here. What ever may be both of your troubles… rest in peace, my friends. The world WILL miss you both! Despite what collectivist thoughts we are taught, every individual matters! I miss you both. Rest in peace, friends.

I could not have said it better.

Also, doesn’t anyone think that it would have to take some heartless (more than likely gov’t paid) so-called veternarian, not a real vet that carries compassion, to stand there while someone brings there perfectly healthy beloved pet in to be put down. I can just imagine hime saying now settle down now, it‘s okay this won’t hurt. At least I hope that this is not how it went down. God, how sad. This is a story you would rather never have heard. I hope that the vet tried and tried and tried to find a home for the dog, but probably not.

And for you jackknifes on here, who automatically begin with, Hmmm? looks like one of hem queers to me. That’s obviously what happened here, it‘s cause he’s walkin a little light in his loafers, ya know. I really don’t understand you guys. We could have a story on bed bugs, and you would somehow relate them to “them gays” or something. But hey, if you like being a hater, more power to ya, I‘ll celebrate it only in the concept that you are being your own individual and aren’t bowing down to the PC collective.

That is one reason not to move to a “deed restricted community” too. There is something about the power to complain and turn neighbors in for all sorts of ridiculous things – too much time on their hands in some cases, inflated egos in others. Very sad story, indeed, a waste of two lives.

To be honest, a similar thing occurred to me in the past, and I moved. My sweet dog or my crappy bitchy stuck in high school mentality neighbors… hmmm. I’d rather live in an abandoned summer camp with my dog than a fancy condo without him. Wait- I do.
I feel bad for the guy not having the coping skills to move.

I hate to sound trite, but this story sounds like a soap opera in itself… If this young & very attractive man killed himself over something like this, then I have to say I believe there were other underlying problems concerning his own self-esteem. I have grieved over the loss of each & every one of my pets when they were no longer around, but I am decidedly not psychotic enough to kill myself over it. But then again, I am not going to gainsay this man’s right to take his own life, if that’s what he decides to do with it. Go with God & rest in peace. It’s still a damn shame, though.

Saying there must have been other reasons why he klled himself shows a lack of understanding of people. Of course that was sufficient for him to kill himself. What is acceptable to one person is everything to another. And this was not a small matter.Yet even in small [moral] matters or other small events people kill themselves.I knew someone who killed herself because she feared she would not be able to keep a bid she liked at work.As soon as I saw her i said to myself ,cool, calm and collected but as soon as something goes wrong she will go off and kill herself.A year later she did .That bid was everything to her.The last time i saw her i told her not to fear that she was the best qualified and she would get to keep the bid. She looked at me blankly .She loved that job and it showed in her enthusiasm .Her growing fear took over as she feared someone else would get the bid. That job meant the world to her.No telling what means what to someone.Killing a beloved dog is no small matter. He should have talked to someone about the boards insistence he get rid of his dog.may they rest in peace. horrible ,horrible story!

I read that too. One person on the board was “pressuring” him to euthanize the dog. A board is not one person. I almost think this guy went through with it as the Ultimate FU to the board member in question (like a “are you happy now?” sort of moment), but then realized what cruel, heartless person that made him.

Add in his other problems people are adding here and suddenly, he’s doing the same to himself out of extreme guilt. There were many other avenues he did not pursue for reasons we’ll never know now.

You don’t know many vets – or suppossedly “no kill” animal shelters. When I fell on hard times and had to give up my home, I could barely manage to support myself, let alone my sweet, sweet cats. With no alternative, I brought them to a shelter with an advertised no-kill policy. Hah. I was forced to sign a euthanasia order “in case they couldn’t be placed”. I left the place in tears and with a nauseous feeling of self-loathing and betrayal. And I still miss them terribly. I will not judge this man’s heart, but I understand his pain.

This guy apparently had other issues. You don’t put down a dog for barking; you either mover or find a new home for him. I am thinking he wasn’t getting calls to work and with All My Children ending before Christmas, this venue was gone. Of course, I don’t ever remember see him on AMC anytime in the last few years. Homeowner associations are truly one of the most evil organization structures in modern America. There is no way to fight them, you can’t sue them for the minor issues they screw up constantly, they are inevitably controlled by small cliques of people, and unlike a company or other normal organization where you can complain to someone either in the organization or in the government for action, with the homeowner association there is no one to turn to. So for purely personal petty reasons they can destroy people’s lives or at least make their life miserable. Truly, seeing how human nature acts in homeowner associations one can appreciate the truly sick and evil nature of man, truly one can appreciate the need for a place called Hell where the people involved will spend eternity. If you have never dealt with a homeowner association and think this description is overwrought, count yourself lucky, and stay away from them at all costs to stay that way.

I agree .. and even if they are fine and good before you move in be aware that can change with one election and a bunch of control freaks taking over your life. I think they should be limited .. usually it is because there are “common areas” that they have the associations …. well other than those they should leave the CITZENS alone and not be allowed to set rules for home and condo owners beyond what the local government have.
