Social Security Administration: So Here’s Why We Need 174,000 Hollow Point Bullets…

Social Security Administration Explains Why They Need 174,000 Hollow Point Bullets

(Source: oig.ssa.gov)

The Social Security Administration clarified why it was seeking to purchase 174,000 hollow point bullets in a blog post on Thursday, saying that the agency employs “special agents” with “full law enforcement authority.”

TheBlaze previously reported that the SSA had posted a “Request for Quote for Ammunition” on the FedBizOps.gov website earlier this month. The solicitation called for 174,000 .357 Sig 125 grain bonded jacketed hollow point bullets.

The SSA’s Office of the Inspector General addressed the solicitation in a blog post on the agency’s website with the title, “Beyond the Numbers“:

As we said in a recent post, our office has criminal investigators, or special agents, who are responsible for investigating violations of the laws that govern SSA’s programs. Currently, about 295 special agents and supervisory special agents work in 66 offices across the United States.  These investigators have full law enforcement authority, including executing search warrants and making arrests.

Our investigators are similar to your State or local police officers. They use traditional investigative techniques, and they are armed when on official duty.

Media reports expressed concerns over the type of ammunition ordered. In fact, this type of ammunition is standard issue for many law enforcement agencies. OIG’s special agents use this ammunition during their mandatory quarterly firearms qualifications and other training sessions, to ensure agent and public safety. Additionally, the ammunition our agents use is the same type used at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center.

Our special agents need to be armed and trained appropriately. They not only investigate allegations of Social Security fraud, but they also are called to respond to threats against Social Security offices, employees, and customers.

The blog also links to another post about a fight that broke out near an SSA office in Massachusetts that required law enforcement to respond.

“SSA is processing more applications than ever, which means more traffic in SSA office…Employee and visitor safety is the highest priority for OIG, which, together with the Federal Protective Services and local law enforcement, has jurisdiction over SSA workplaces,” the blog states.

What the blog post does not clear up is why the SSA needs such massive amounts of ammunition and whether it is a standard purchase for the SSA.

Normal police officers do not have the authority and access to Federal property unless on official business. For example: responding to a call. This ammunition is for fraud investigators not the Homeland officers that protect SSA offices. To answer your question regarding how often do you hear of incidents at SSA offices. The simple answer is everyday, there are stabbings, assaults, as well as various other incidents everyday .

Plain and simply put there is so much wasteful money spent in SS that if I listed it here you would flip out. Most of the waste if spent on things that the federal government allows and not the employees or the officers charged with protecting the facilities.

I see “healthy” 18 and 19 year old men and women coming into the office everyday to claim Social security income. I see “convicts” that get out of prison, and the first thing they do is go to SSA to collect their social security income. There is a ton of money wasted on those that need to learn “work ethics”, yet instead of that they just live month to month off the federal government. I used to think that Social security was for the retired, it is spent more on the young then the old.

      What a waste.

We have our national weather purchasing large amounts of ammo, as well as social security. The Department of Homeland Security has now put in orders for over 1.4 billion rounds. I think our government knows something is coming, and it isn’t going to be pretty. Perhaps you should follow their lead and start purchasing rounds for yourself.

@ Tracker 2021, I like how you insinuate that the worst problem with SS is that there are a bunch of bad eggs (who are young) taking advantage of it whilst completely ignoring the fact that SS is a Ponzi scheme and a fraud designed to fleece the younger generation to provide for those of the prior who were too stupid to save for their own retirement. In case you haven’t noticed by now, I find your knowledge of our SS system to be severely lacking. As soon as I pay my 15% in taxes (yes, I do pay the employer portion no matter what anyone else may tell you, businesses and employers don’t pay taxes) and as soon as that money hits the SSA, it is used to pay off the prior generations’ “entitlements”. IF there is any left over, the government promptly spends it on whatever pork project that the older generation wants their congressman to spend it on and the SSA is left holding a federally secured bond. Now here is the funny part… Guess who has to pay the taxes to repay that federally secured bond with interest? The current generation of taxpayers! They fleece you coming and going and you‘re upset that a few bad eggs are taking advantage of a bureaucratic mess that shouldn’t even be in the first place?

I’m sure you can see why I find your comment so distasteful now.

Yeah, and meanwhile you have legitimately disabled people that should fall under SSA guidelines but they are out there working (or forced to work) because the SSA is a bureaucratic red tape nightmare.

Thanks, in no small part, to those “healthy” people who know how to use (scam) the system.

      SGTB

If you believe that the greatest waste is from those that are retired then you need to do some research. That being said the entire system is ridiculous because those that are retiring are NOT getting what they put into it, they are getting MORE then what they put into it. In fact they would have saved more had they done their own investments. To steal the line I HATE TO HEAR from dear leader….“let me be clear” the entire system is a fraud. Let me give you a example, and this is a TRUE story.

A guy comes into the office and states that since he is now a “legal” citizen he would like to have the SS from the “illegal” social security numbers he had been using transferred to his now “legal” one. After the SSA agent checks with a supervisor she is told to do it. Tell me that is not messed up. Also it is not a “few bad apples”. I see on average about 10-15 people coming into the office a day to file for retirement. I see on average about 50-60 people coming in to file for social security income. Do the math. Most about 80% are able bodied under 24 year old men and women. We are raising a generation of people that are completely dependent on government. Once they leave SS they ask how to get to DSHS to get their food and housing.

If and hopefully when we get this system done away with these people will be 26-30 with NO JOB SKILLS and ZERO work ethic.

I must comment here. While I know and agree the SS system is seriously messed up! Who do you think is going to hire a felon after he/she has spent 10 years in prison?? They’ve done their time on the inside..but the worst “time” they’ll do is the rest of their life-even if they have repented to God, rehabilitated, and changed completely, nobody is going to give them a chance. I know because I had a similar experience without doing time! Drop off the grid for about 4 years to take care of a parent with cancer or a child or family and see how many jobs you are offered when you haven‘t worked for a few years or aren’t “currently working”. This government and the new Marxist NWO red tape and bureocracy has us all simply trying to survive! And please people don’t comment about the fact you have no sympathy for ex-cons! John and Paul in the bible were both imprisoned…many good people have been in prison and later turned their lives around. ALL people should be given a chance to work..but between bureocracy and the government shipping our jobs overseas…Americans are screwed! Lets blame the right people.

You’re kidding me right? Who needs a police force of some sort who is frauding the system? Have you ever threatened to take away someone‘s bennies who didn’t really deserve it? This is a very plausible reason, that‘s why it’s dangerous. I assume now that the SSA feels Obama and his administration are on the way out, the Republicans will crack down on disability fraud and there will be riots. I hate to sound racist, but the ones who defraud the system are usually minorities, and usually black (if they’re legal). They feel it’s their way of getting reparations from slavery. I think if you cut off the illegal aliens, they’d just go home.

The social security administration teaches people to lie. When I was divorced, I went to apply for Welfare. I was told that because I had a vehicle (even though I was paying on it and the bank really owned it) and a place to live (once again, paying rent) and a job, I didn’t qualify. I looked at her and said, so, If I sell my truck, live on the streets and quit my job, I’d qualify? She just said, “I didn’t tell you that.” Emphasis on I. When I went to apply for disability for my handicapped son (before he was 18 so my income counted), they asked me if I’d sold any assets in the past year, had me count out the money in my wallet, provide bank statments as to how much money I had in the bank, and even tell them what my son had in his PIGGY BANK! And convicts get SSI all the time. You have to lie to get any benefits, and they don’t check. Honest people are the only ones dealing with red tape.

Agreed, but that’s not always financially responsible for people who have to work for and purchase their own rounds instead of having the public buy the rounds for them. It qould be nice to head to the range knowing I wouldn’t be spending $75 on ammunition.

A compromise is finding the same grain and shape (hollow point or full metal jacket) in a cheaper less reliable bullet for the range, but even that can be more expensive than simply buying non-protection range rounds. If you can afford it, go to the range with the same rounds you carry outside of the range, if you can’t afford that, by a cheaper round of the same grain, if you can’t afford that, buy cheap range rounds at WalMart. Either way though, find a budget and practice. You’ll never be sorry for getting accurate and fully acclimated with the operation of your gun(s).

Another compromise is loading your own rounds, but some ranges (most indoor ranges in Florida) don’t allow reloads because of insurance costs.

I personally am a hand-loader and when I go to shoot, I always have about 1000 rounds of pistol ammunition to “unload” or I consider it a wasted trip and a waste of time.
Gun control in my dictionary is defined as being able to hit your intended target in the COM (center of mass). This requires muscle memory and the only way to get that is to practice. Are 590 rounds for these folks to practice for a stress filled situation excessive? In this case…..I think not.

Ball ammunition has the nasty habit of over penetrating and striking things beyond the intended target (even if you hit the target). JHP bullets tend to expend their energy IN the target and far less likely to cause collateral damage.

I wouldn’t give a commie the benefit of the doubt, if I were you. This admin is readying itself for civil war because Barack has no intention of stepping down. Those who ignore the red flags do so at their own peril.

In re JHPs, if you are a conservative white male your head is the target.

Maybe Barack is sending these “special agents” across the border to hand out SSNs to the drug cartels, jihadists and illegals. What’s that operation gonna be called, Barry?

Let’s see….174,000 / 295 = 589.83 rounds per agent. I‘d say they’re expecting a lot of trouble from our senior citizens and disabled people. The true plan as I see it is to make it harder for We The People to purchase said types of ammo. Why? Because it’s one thing that helps us even the odds when the military crackdown comes. The military doesn’t use hollow points.

Again, training with hollow points is excessively expensive and total BS. Why do they have their own police, why are not the local law enforcement or FBI good enough?

Military per the Geneva Convention is limited on the type of ammo, ball ammo is mostly used. Law enforcement can it is considered safer to avoid collateral damage versus ball ammo flying through the target or walls.

Apparently, this article was written by someone that doesn’t go to the range because when I go to the range, it is not uncommon to fire 200-300 rounds with each of my weapons. It also makes sense to fire the same type of round while on duty as at the range so the shooter knows what to expect should the situation arise. And finally, 174K is not that many rounds, although it is about 60 times what I currently have stocked up. Not a lot of ammo to go around to almost 300 agents.

My first impression was negative. But if what was written is true, more power to them. Social Security fraud is rampant, as is, recently, SSI Disability. The miscreants involved, which the SS agents are investigating, aren’t of the “tea and crumpets” crowd.

I’ve paid into the system for 56 years, and, since I still work, am still paying into SS.

I hope the agents find the criminals and tear their asses up.

IF you assume that is the truth–and that is a BIG assumption–WHY does every agency need its own quasi-military police force? Seems pretty redundant and wasteful to me–but then that is what our government is best at–wasting our money.

we cannot be conned by the obama admin .. they are spreading out the ammo buys so as not to call attention to a historic massive ammo purchase by a Government to be used against its own citizens … obama fully intends to be able to have his ‘private army’ slaughter Americans in our streets and homes. that’s why all the AMERICAN tanks and manuevers — in American towns and cities. HOLLOW POINTS? they want our innocent white Christian American children dead on the first hit, obama thinks that will demoralize and immobilize us into submission.

So far, it’s all pistol ammo. Means nothing if the balloon goes up. Half the people here have 5.56 or 7.62 bullet launchers… even the Feds are smart enough not to bring a pistol to a rifle fight.

Do you really think the government is out of ammo and needs to reorder some? This is how a liberal president goes about getting what he wants, GUN CONTROL. Since 2008 ammo and gun prices have almost doubled. If the government orders large amounts those orders will be filled first and not be going to Gander Mountain for the public’s use. This is Obama using YOUR money (he thinks belongs to him) to once again go around congress and effect YOUR second amendment rights.
