Solar Flare Eruption Creates Spectacular Video, Images

GREENBELT, Md. (The Blaze/AP) — A medium-sized solar flare has erupted from the sun in an impressive display captured by NASA cameras. Scientists say that the event won’t have a significant impact on Earth.

NASA says the flare peaked Tuesday and created a large cloud that appeared to cover almost half the surface of the sun. Images were recorded by the orbiting satellite called the Solar Dynamics Observatory. You can watch the video below, which gets better after the first 15 seconds:

A news release says solar energy released by the event should deliver a “glancing blow” to Earth’s magnetic field on Wednesday or Thursday.

But it’s not expected to cause a major impact here. The National Weather Service is predicting minor effects on satellites and weak impacts on some power grids.

    Great video…
    The view of the blocked out Sun really shows how BIG this thing is…the blast not only produced a cloud that covered the local 1/4 of the Sun but reached a FULL solar diameter off the Sun’s surface.

    Seeing as the Sun has the volume of about 1 million Earth’s, that solar burst was about 5 Earth diameters across and 1000′s of Earth diameters high….good thing we are 98 million miles away…would have been cool to watch that from the surface of Mercury…if I was fire proof.. LOL

    Is anyone still wondering why China is building self contained cities that no one is living in yet. I think you can pretty much figure it out if you know this is suppose to effect the climate in the very near future. I think they want some Chinese to survive. Of course I could be wrong.

      No, you are not wrong – it makes perfect sense. Those empty cities are quite an enigma aren’t they! I don‘t believe even the Chinese would waste the time and resources to build them if they did not know something that we don’t know. Or maybe we do know and our government is just not telling us. My son believes that all of these trillion dollar deficits is money that is going to something else – could be!!

    Too bad we can’t harness all that energy. Even if we could, I bet some oil or energy company would buy up the rights to any technology or device that could solve all our energy needs for eternity, and our political leaders would gladly sell them those rights so we have to be dependent on them for all our energy needs.

    Boy, again I find myself being a cynical SOB. Thinking that our so called leaders would sell us out.

    Man would they really do that?

    I want to stop being that cynical SOB. I just wish that our government would give me a reason and the opportunity to stop.

    I need help, anyone know of a good therapist?

    That was an awesome show of mother nature though.

    Tell me again how there is no God, only he could put on a show like that.

      Of course an oil company, or the government or someone else would scarf up ability so we could all pay for usage. Remember when Nicolas Tesla came up with electrical current we have today, he wanted to make it free to everybody, Westinghouse and others wanted to make money from it.

Scripture tells us when we see these signs, natural disasters all around us, Earthquakes in many places, we have seen serious tsunami events, 100 year floods (right) and snow events unusually deep (but the earth is warming isn’t it?), tornado’s where they have rarely been – most lately in Massachusetts, and now signs in the heavens, look up, the time is near! No man knows the day or the hour of His return. But we ALL need to be about the business of preparing for what is to come. If we focus on the science of what this one event is doing, we miss the bigger picture. Each of us have a soul that will spend eternity somewhere. Prepare by asking Christ to forgive your sin and come into your heart, so that your destiny is Heaven in the end. Romans 10:9-13.

    The last solar maximum was in 2000. The next solar maximum is currently predicted to occur sometime between January and May 2013 and to be one of the weakest cycles since 1928.
    The unreliability of solar maxima is demonstrated in that NASA had previously predicted the solar maximum for 2010/2011 and possibly to occur as late as 2012. Previously, on March 10, 2006, NASA researchers had announced that the next solar maximum would be the strongest since the historic maximum in 1859 in which the northern lights could be seen as far south as Rome–they were wrong. Bottom line: nobody can predict what is going to happen, but the Bible does speak of great signs taking place in heaven and earth preceding the second coming of Christ. With the way the world is headed in opposing Israel, 2012 could be an eventful year.

    It doesnt look like anything until the proportions are considered. That is one monumentally huge explosion. The size of the area which blasts away from the surface of the sun is bigger than an entire hemisphere of our tiny planet earth. Its actually frightening to look at.

      Indeed, and yet it is still fairly awsome….if one came directly at earth there would not be much we could do other than batten down the hatches and ride it out while praying for the best outcome to be made possible.

      Events like this remind us just how small of a place in things we really have.

      Yes…signs in the heaves..there is the comet Elenin coming this fall, Oct.16 closest point, and will pass by the earth. The thing is.. we will be passing through the tail of the comet around Nov. 6, 2011. Can’t help but think about The dragon, that with his tail draws a third of the stars and cast them to earth.       That was amazing to watch. Makes one glad to have lived in this age. The sad thing is that its only going to get better, and one day we will all be dead and we will miss out on some really great stuff.

      Can you imagine how Galileo or Kopernicus would have wished to see this. Or how those who died without ever getting in a plane, or even seeing one, might have wished that they could fly just once. That is so common-place now that we get irritated if the food cart is late and pull the shade down so we might get some sleep – and complain about “having” to fly somewhere.

      I guess that’s why, for those that can stump up with the money, are so keen to buy a ticket on a space ship.

      I have the sudden urge to take my family and fly somewhere and see something wonderful.

      Spread this among the doubters of the 2012 scenario.

      It takes 140 years or so of star mapping to be able to determine how the planets and astral bodies will line up at any given time. This what the Mayan’s were able to do. They calculated there will be an allignment which happens every 50,000+ years and was due to happen again in 2012.

      Today’s scientists have admitted to this and though they say they are not sure of the date, they know it will happen during 2012…and will cause MASSIVE solar flares which will act like a gigantic EMP destroying the earths electrical grid, sending the world back into the “stone age” which will take years if not decades to fix.

      Some “so-called” experts predict as much as a 90% mortality rate by the end of the first year.

      I really doubt the survivors will be the “valley girl” who can’t bare to get off their cellphone evn while shopping for the new Gucci shoes…and it probably won’t be the “nerd boy” who can’t scramble an egg in a campfire but can tell you the cheat codes of every video game known to man.

      You have a year (maybe less) to develop some survival skills and set aside food, water, weapons, ammo, medicine, the ability to have sustainable food/water/heat and the desire to protect it in order for you and your family to survive as long as possible.

      Scoff if you want, but I’d rather laugh at my stupidity in 2013 rather than die from starvation or roving bands of cannibals when I had ample warning to prepa

      stone-age? really? you do realize that there was no electricty in the 1700′s right? and there are such things as solar generators and such and other high technology that is not on the grid. While I agree to atleast be prepared, why scream the sky is falling when it clearly isnt?

      Hiya’s!
      I say “stone age” because the vast majority of the skills/knowledge our ancestors had in the 1700′s and so on are gone. Technology has wiped these basic abilities of survival from our current populace. So, as far as our current ability to deal with such a situation, we might as well be going back to the stone age.

      Pick any city and take a random 100 people and drop them on an abandoned farm/ranch with seed and some animals. Give them some books and 30 days of food. Now tell them to get started at raising their own food…while taking care of their own medical needs, heating/cooling. How many will make it at the end of 6 months?

      I guess this is expected to be the norm for the sun for some time to come….Makes one wonder if scientists really know what they are talking about when they say it wont exhaust its nuclear fuel for millions of years…..Would hate to see it nova….Hell, maybe it has….Wont actually know for another 8 minutes…
