Soldiers Kill 10 Gunmen in Mexico Clash Along Texas Border

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Soldiers patrolling a rural area on the border with Texas killed 10 suspected drug gang gunmen at a training camp, Mexico’s Defense Department said Saturday.
The military patrol came under attack after finding the camp of armed men in the town of Valle Hermoso, in the border state of Tamaulipas, on Friday, the department said in a statement.
The soldiers returned fire and killed 10 suspects. Soldiers also seized weaponry including 24 rifles, two grenade launchers and 18 grenades, as well as an armored vehicle, it said.
The Gulf coast state of Tamaulipas, which borders Texas, has seen a spike in violence since last year’s split between the Gulf cartel and the Zetas, formerly a gang of enforcers and now a cartel in its own right.
In November, the federal government launched a major military offensive sending more soldiers to Tamaulipas and neighboring Nuevo Leon state after the area was overwhelmed by violence linked to the two gangs’ turf dispute.
More than 34,600 people have died in drug-related killings in Mexico in the four years since President Felipe Calderon launched an offensive against the cartels.
In another attack Saturday, a police commander died and three officers were wounded when a car bomb exploded in the central state of Hidalgo.
State Public Safety Secretary Damian Canales Mena said the officers were checking out a tip that a body was in the trunk of the vehicle when it exploded.
Investigators suspect the Zetas cartel was behind the attack in the town of Tula. It could be revenge for the recent killings of two cartel members by police, Canales Mena said.
Hidalgo is the home state of alleged Zetas leader Heriberto Lazcano Lazcano and a central transit point for drugs.
In Chihuahua state, meanwhile, authorities said a commander who worked in internal affairs for the local Attorney General’s Office was killed along with another agent.
State Attorney General’s Office spokesman Carlos Gonzalez said the two were gunned down Friday afternoon in the capital, also called Chihuahua. A third agent was gravely wounded. A motive was not immediately known.
And in nearby Ciudad Juarez, across the border from El Paso, Texas, three men died when a gasoline bomb was thrown into their store.
State prosecutors also said that elsewhere in Ciudad Juarez, authorities found the dead bodies of three other victims of apparent gangland murders.
The Sinaloa and Juarez cartels have been fighting for control of the lucrative trafficking routes in Chihuahua.

Posted on January 23, 2011 at 5:24amSine the Mexicans obviously have a “shoot to kill” order on their side of the border, perhaps it is time for us to issue the same order for our side of the border. Erect guard towers every 100 yards connected by barbed wire along its entire length and issue “shoot-to-kill“ orders for anyone attempting to cross into the US and ”ignore” orders for anyone leaving. If they seem unsure which way they should actually go, help them out and show them the way with a few warning shots.

The National Guards are only available during natural disasters and civil unrest to state governors. This was changed in the 80′s when they down sized the regular Army at the end of the cold war. To do this states needed to agree to give functional control to the Federal Gov’t. Because of the “posse’ commitatis” act Federal Army personnel cannot enforce state laws inside the borders of the US. when they inegrated Federal Army personnel on there Innactive reserve time of their enlistment, states now have to get federal gov’t authorization to do anything that would constitute law enforcement.
I would love to see the Federal Gov’t use Federal Army personnel to secure those areas of the border that they refuse to errect a fence for, you could call it on the job training for a real war on the border because it will happen someday in the future.

Posted on January 23, 2011 at 2:55amAs I look at the border, we should have at a minimum, the National Guard sealing off the border, with an order to shoot anyone coming across illegally. I am sorry if that would include women and children, but if you are engaging in an illegal act, so be it. We should seal a 10 mile DMZ from Texas to California, and simply put, engage with absolute prejudice and invocation. If the Mexican govt. does nothing to secure it from their side, then we do exactly what we did against Pancho Villa, invade and secure the border from their side. Then we establish a work visa program, after establishing who is coming here to work and what their background is, let the Mexican worker come, work and go back to Mexico as they see fit. I believe if a person is willing to come to this country and adapt, work towards citizenship, they should be afforded the same opportunities as all other citizens that have immigrated before them. If they have no inclinations to become citizens, swear allegiance, and embrace the USA and the customs, traditions, and history, then, send them back to the squalor from whence they emerged. They can then rise against their own tyranny and make Mexico the country they wish it to be, instead of tearing the US down to their levels. There I said it. Take away my 1st amendment rights, but be warned, yours are next.
