Solyndra Hearing Update: GOP Reps Grill Obama Officials Over Taxpayer-Funded Energy Loan

Hot Air’s Ed Morrissey has the blow-by-blow of what happened on Capitol Hill Wednesday during the Solyndra hearing (you can get caught up here) involving Department of Energy official Jonathan Silver:

Freshman Rep. Morgan Griffith (R-VA) has a name that sounds more like a law firm — and that’s appropriate to keep in mind in this clip from today’s House hearing on Solyndra.  Griffith, a member of the Energy and Commerce Committee’s subcommittee on oversight and investigations, grills the Department of Energy’s Jonathan Silver about the decision to subordinate taxpayer investment in Solyndra to a new investor, Argonaut, as the green-tech firm was failing.  Griffith points out that Congress made clear that taxpayer funds for green-energy loans were not to be subordinated to other investors in case of bankruptcy and demands to know why Silver and the Obama administration disregarded it.  Silver responds that the DoE needed to use all tools it could to attempt to salvage the company to protect taxpayer funds — and Griffith pounces at the answer:

But the grilling didn’t end there. Rep. Tim Murphy (R-PA) couldn’t get Silver to admit who actually approved the loan despite the poor market signs.

“You’re the driver, Mr. Silver. You’re the driver,” Murphy said:

Here’s a comment for those of you with their thinking caps on. Suppose your car runs out of gas on some long, flat stretch of Arizona highway and you are 30 miles from the nearest gas station. Fortunately there are a lot of people around to help you push your car those 30 miles. How many of those people would you need to push your car those thirty miles in say, 12 hours? Five guys? Ten?

A single gallon of gasoline, about 8 pounds, will get you there in 30 minutes. Those 8 pounds of gasoline will do what 5 or 10 guys can do, and 24 times faster. And of course those guys couldn’t push an airplane across the ocean or any of the other things petroleum does for mankind.

Suppose tomorrow there was no more gasoline of oil. No cars, no ships, no airplanes, no military to defend our country. Civilization would collapse. That’s not a paranoid theory, you just have to think about it. If there was no more oil, no more gasoline, what stops?

You know that oil isn’t a renewable resource. The oil we have took millions of years to create (sorry all of you who think the world is 5000 years old, that’s not true) and there is a fixed amount. When it’s gone, it’s gone. Maybe you don’t care or think about your descendants. But IMO, the sooner we start developing alternative sources of energy the better. When the oil starts running out, and that’s not that many generations away, it’ll be too late.

      @JZS

And your point is what? We need to keep investing billions in dead end technologies? People don‘t use the crap because it’s too expensive and too inefficient. When somebody comes up with something that actually works, is feasible for practical use, and is cost effective people will use it.

We’ve used all sorts of different things to produce energy over the centuries: wood, whale blubber, coal, steam, natural gas, oil, water. If it works and it’s readily available and cost effective people will use it. Until you‘ve got an alternate way to power my vehicle that meets all of those criteria then I’ll continue to to use gasoline until it runs out.

Oh and by the way. Yes oil is a renewable resource. It just happens to take a really long time for the process to take place. Oil is constantly being created, it wasn‘t a one time occurance where all the dinasaurs were liquified into oil when they died and that’s all the oil that will ever exist. Now are we pulling more out of the ground than is being created and will we eventually hit a point where the well is essentially dry? Probably at some point. But the world will also eventually see a point when there is essentially no potable water left. I guess we should all stop drinking water now.

Dear JZS, Oil is created abiotically. It was not created from dead single or multi-celled organisms. It has been detected in deep space, found in extremely deep not sedimentary deposits and continues to be created even today. The quantity we have used and still have has take thousands if not hundreds of years to produce and will become scarce in the future, but we still have 100s of years of hydrocarbon based fuels. Solar requires highly poisonous materials generate power and wind turbines kill tens of thousands of animals every year. There is now free or even economical renewable energy and other than the useful idiots, no one believes that there will be in the next 40 or 50 years.

I don’t know what kind of technologies you keep up with, but battery technology has taken huge leaps in the last few years. It’s still not cheap enough, or quite yet feasible for mass appeal, but in the not too distant future we will have small, lightweight, powerful, affordable batteries that will also have the benefit of taking a charge quickly.

This technology can replace a great deal of oil consumption. BUT, how will we create the electrical power needed to charge them in mass quantities? Solar and wind is not going to cut it, at least for now.

My point is this JZS. Have faith and trust in mankind, and even more faith and trust in the free market to provide us with what we need, when we need it. Let a free people do what they do best, unfettered by overly numerous regulations and taxes, and it will all work out. No need to wring our hands. Trust me.

For now, just drill baby drill, frack baby frack, and mine baby mine like nobody’s business so that energy here stays cheap enough to allow us to develop the technologies of the future. A booming economic environment is a prosperous and inventive environment.

Government can not force these things to happen. They don’t have the brain power to make it happen. They only hinder the process.

Rowgue, I’m not sure what to make of your post. Your language is coherent and grammatical but your understanding of scale of time involved with the creation of oil is way off. Yes, the same processes that created the oil we now have are still taking place. But the oil we have now on Earth took hundreds of millions of years to create, compared to the few hundred years we’ve used oil for anything other than burning in an oil lamp. Think about it – Saudi Arabia, and the rest of the Middle East, is a desert. Do you think more oil is being created there? How long did it take for those countries to become deserts anyway. A long time right? Where exactly is all this new oil being created?

No, you’re so ill-informed I don’t know how to respond. Given the rate of usage compared to the creation of oil, oil is a non-renewable resource. Maybe you should do some research on that.

I agree that right now alternative sources of energy are expensive compared to oil. But the price of oil , although it might fluctuate, is only going up in the long run as oil becomes more and more difficult and expensive to produce.

GJPinks – no, oil has not been found in “deep space.” And even if it were, how would you get it? What is it, little droplets you can scoop up and return to Earth? Sorry, the amount of oil on Earth now is, for all intents and purposes fixed and declining rapidly.

Hey Billy, good post. I might disagree slightly with a point or two, but awesome post.

Actually the company I work for is trying to get a foot in the door of one or two components of the next generation of energy storage devices (batteries). The future of that technology is huge as you say.

Power plants, for example, are strained to the limit during hot summer days (no comment about global warming). But, if they could store the energy they generate at night, when demand is low, we could, more or less, don’t hold me to a figure, half the the number of power plants we need. The plants store the extra energy they need at night, then use that energy to make up the deficit during the day.

And of course electric cars and hybrid cars would become more competitive with regular cars, like I have. And of course computers, iPads, readers etc. would last longer without a charge.

Yep, the Market is a good thing, and my company is trying to profit from new technology for energy storage. Which is good, because I hope to retire from the same company I’ve worked for since I was a young person.

You found a Nobel Prize winner who disagrees with climate change. If you googled you could probably find a few other respectable scientists that do too.

Sorry, but the other ten thousand climate scientists in the world disagree. I won’t try to present the data behind to universal consensus that climate changeoccurringring. Your scientist says the world isn’t warming. He says that the temperature of the Earth is “remarkably stable.” But there is no support for that idea anywhere. The Earth is warming, that is a fact beyond dispute except from AM talk show hosts. Whether or not the warming is caused by greenhouse gasses from human activity is the olegitimatemate area of dispute.

And your scientist thinks the Earth isn’t warming. Okay. But the other 10,000 climate scientists in the world believe that not only is the Earth warming, but that greenhouse gasses from human activity are a contributing cause.

Sorry to be the one to inform you, but the sun doesn’t revolve around the Earth, and, yes, humans can actually pollute the vanishingly small layer of air that surrounds the world, and that’s bad news for humans.

I certainly never thought that article would sway your opinion, but wanted you and the rest of America to know of it’s existence.

At least I can rest easy knowing that data shown near the end of the article seems to show that the majority of people are starting to see that the wool has been pulled over their eyes.

At minimum, we have a hundred years worth of oil at our disposal. Seeing as how 100 years ago we barely had cars, and the first flying machines, (look at our advances in those 100 years), I somehow know that by the time our oil is anywhere near running out, new sources of energy will have been perfected. All the worry and stress over it will have been for naught.

But of course, that’s not what it is all about in the first place, and you know that as well as I do. But I digress, and that is a topic for another day.

Not sure if you are deliberately being obtuse or just don’t get it. The oil currently in the ground is the result of a process that has never stopped…meaning that ‘new oil’ is constantly being added to the current supply as more (lets call it pre-oil) reaches its end stage and becomes recoverable oil.

Are we consuming the reserves faster than they are being replenished? I‘d say that’s a near certainty. However, to condescendingly decree that once oil is gone, its gone forever, doesn’t jive with the facts or logic.

The problem I and many other American‘s have is with government trying to centrally plan the economy and direct our tax dollars to the ’green’ projects they deem most worthy. Since its not their money if it gets lost, they figure what’s the harm in investing in extremely unprofitable technology. They always know what’s best for us and since their good buddy and contributors run the company, it has to be a great investment.

These conflicts of interest and an absence of bottom line thinking is exactly why government inevitably winds up doing more harm than good.

@JZS Honestly I do not see what ANY of your comments have to do with the BLATANT corruption of the Obama administration. The ongoing investigation has nothing to do with fossil fuels. The reason Solyndra went belly up had nothing to do with a proliferation of fossil fuels, or peoples preference of using easy to acquire but hard to replace fossil fuels. Solyndra failed because other companies caught up with them technologically and offered their products cheaper! Then the Obama admin decides to give a genuinely failing company a half billion dollars of taxpayer money, not to let the company re-tool or re-organize. But for the sole purpose of protecting multimillionaire private investors from losing money when it went belly up. Instead the TAXPAYERS took the loss! In simple terms, the Obama Administration stole money out of your and my pockets to protect his rich donors.

Nobody wants to pay the price for American made solar panels. Nobody wants an electric car. It’s supply and demand. You can’t subsidize an industry that no body wants. If it were feasible and inexpensive and worked well, natural selection would make the industry thrive. Obviously we can’t pay our employees what China does, so we have to find an alternative to that. And you can’t run an airplane on solar panels. But this has nothing to do with the problem here. They knew a year before this company went bankrupt that it probably would, and still gave them over half a billion dollars of our money. It proves one of 2 things. Either the Obama administration is having a ball spending someone else’s money and numbers that high mean absolutely nothing to them, or it’s Cloward and Piven, since they knew they were throwing money down a hole.

Actually suborn means to encourage or entice. Bribing is subborning, but so is the simple act of asking somebody to do something. Paying someone to provide a service is also subborning.

And they are using the term subordinate in the financial context. Subordinating debt is when you willingly and intentionally place yourself as a subordinate to other creditors to be repaid. So if they file for bankruptcy and you have subordinated that debt, all of their other creditors will now get repaid with the proceeds of the liquidation before what is owed to you is ever considered. When you subordinate debt you are essentially writing it off as a loss, you have zero chance of ever recovering a dime from any liquidation resulting from the bankruptcy.

it means after bankruptcy, and the left over cash is to be given back, it is given back in a certain order. if you are first in line, you will get all you money back, but if you are last in line, the chances that there is anything left to give are slim to none,

it means they agreed to go to the end of the line so private investors get paid, and we get screwed.

Yeah- I figured it out. It’s like when we took out a second mortgage to have our pool put in. The bank that undersigned the mortgage for the house was first in line, and the bank that undersigned the loan against the first mortgage was 2nd in line. Of course, we paid everybody back so all was good. But what I don’t understand is how the tax payer became 2nd in line.

It lowered the ranking of it for repayment or recovery of funds. Obamas buddy, Kaiser?, who owns shares and sits on the board of Argonaut, got moved up to the #1 spot and we the taxpayers went to the back of the line. So Obamas buddy gets paid and we don’t.

Incredible. The administration buys the equivalent of junk bonds by making this loan, and then subordinates the tax payer’s position on the debt, in hopes of getting future private investment that never materialized. They were going to do anything to make this work, yet it still failed. Again, Obummer makes congress irrelevant. Again, Obummer wastes millions of dollars.

To date, alternative energy efforts require heavy subsidies because they aren’t efficient or cost effective. Generally speaking, subsidies = scams. If there were a profit to be made, there would be plenty of private capital investing in it. Let’s stop kidding ourselves and use the abundant fossil fuel energy we have here in the United States. We‘re being held hostage by a small minority of green folks and we’re going to make ourselves extinct in the process of protecting creatures like the delta smelt. Evolution has always weeded out species and there’s nothing to be gained by prolonging the inevitable. Side note: Do the green folks know about all the birds being killed by windmills? Where’s the outrage?

I personally love the half-hearted attempts to deny the Bush DoE board voted UNANIMOUSLY to DENY Solyndra’s Loan Guarnatee application two weeks before Bush left office and try and claim the Bush Admin also wanted to give them the loan guarantee.

It simply proves they have no defense, and they are throwing anything they can at reporters to try and make this go away.

“Bush did it” isn’t going to stick this time. This is all Obama’s foul up. Chicago machine politics to the letter. It’s not awful enough that Obama fast-tracked the loan guarantee (against ALL advice not to) so that Biden could stump with it but he subordinated the money AGAINST CONGRESSIONAL MANDATE so that his buddy Kaiser could get back his 75 million if the company tanked..which they all knew it would. UNBLOODYBELIEVABLE.
