Some Michigan Schools Permit ‘Religious’ Knives, Yet Cupcakes Are Still Banned

Some Michigan Schools Permit Religious Knives, Yet Cupcakes Are Still Banned

Tolerance of different faiths is a vital part of the foundation of American freedom.  We do not have a national religion and thus, allow virtually all religions to exist side by side. But we also have reasonable limits on how people worship, meaning that one religion cannot claim exemption when their practices infringe or threaten the rights of others. Such is the argument in Michigan where students who follow the Sikh faith have been granted permission to carry into schools the small dagger known as the Kirpan.

For the record, the Kirpan is a symbolic knife and usually not sharpened and in that state it is about as dangerous as a butter knife.  The initial ban was ordered after a 4th grader was found to be carrying the dull knife and parents raised questions.  Since that time, members of the Sikh presented their case to the school board and the ban has been lifted, allowing for the Kirpans to be carried into classrooms.

Many school districts around the country mandate that students enter buildings each day through metal detectors designed to protect all students from guns and knives.  In order to guarantee security for all, will Sikh students who bring their Kirpans to class will be asked to show that the knives are not sharpened?  How else can the school be certain that a non-Skih student has not brought a weapon into the building under the cloak of religious freedom?

As an odd sidebar to this story, there are Michigan schools that have stood up and banned cupcakes.

While the Sikhs are known as ferocious warriors and can be a great asset in our war on Al Queda this is just plain crazy. When you have kids being suspended for bringing toy plastic soldiers to school or pointing a finger at someone and saying bang allowing a kirpan into the schools is a decision only a school administrator could find tolerable. I wonder what they would do if someone wore a set of rosary beads to class. Would religious tolerance go that far?

Dude, They are SO different. This is basically an offshoot of Hinduism. The basis of the religion is the union of soul with God. A Sikh disciplines his thoughts and actions so that the five obstacles—lust, anger, greed, attachment and ego—are dispelled and the soul is united with God. Sikhs believe that the cycle of reincarnation is escaped by this union. Muslims will have none of that “non-sense”.

The knife thing at school is still crazy.

      SIKHS ARE NOT MUSLIMS….for f*#@! sake, people…read a book.

I pulled this from the internet:
The kirpan is both a defensive weapon and a symbol. Physically it is an instrument of “ahimsa” or non-violence. The principle of ahimsa is to actively prevent violence, not to simply stand by idly whilst violence is being done. To that end, the kirpan is a tool to be used to prevent violence from being done to a defenseless person when all other means to do so have failed. ………..

ALSO THIS, from WIKIPEDIA (for what that is worth) : Not all those who identify themselves as Sikhs carry or recommend carrying a kirpan usable as a weapon. Hardeep Singh Kohli, who identifies himself and most of the Sikhs he knows as secular Sikhs, criticised UK Sikh judge Sir Mota Singh QC for calling for Sikh schoolchildren to be allowed to carry the kirpan, saying “he thinks it’s OK for kids to take knives to class. … I’m simply not comfortable with knives being allowed into school. …small, symbolic kirpans are attached to combs that Sikhs keep in their hair. Similarly, small kirpan-shaped pendants are worn around the neck, again fulfilling the criterion of the faith that the dagger be ever-present. Other Sikhs consider that a kirpan must be viable as a weapon to fulfil religious criteria……

      IMHO: School is…….no……..place…..for knives….religious………..or otherwise….sorry, I was eating a cupcake….

Kids are being suspended for accidentally bringing a paring knife in their lunchbox, but these students get to carry a dagger!!

There is NO religion that REQUIRES a dagger to be carried. Its bull.

There is a difference between BELIEF and PRACTICE of religion. This is beyond a reasonable accommodation (and those are usually restricted to REQUIRED religious activities).

Besides, the knives are not USUALLY sharpened …. thats not good enough. If one kid gets to bring a knife, they all get to bring a knife. Thats called equal protection under the law…. but, where these knives come from….. they don’t know much about that.

Hell my grandpa could carry his rifle to school and leave it in the corner of the school house. The fact the hysterical left will subject normal children to these BS policies is appalling. The fact we now let them and consider this OK is a tragedy. That they will allow Muslims this special treatment that risks ““ THE TERRIBLE DANGERS”” of knives in our schools is damning and criminal. I agree with JB
“Parents of this Michigan community need to pull their kids from the schools in that district. They might loose funding when the enrollment is down. Parents should get together and come up with a homeschool plan or something similar. This is crap and until we start to stand up and take action nothing will change and will get worse.”

There is no way I would let my child go to that school or probably any other public school for that matter.

Actually that sounds good.. we need a religion that carries Pig parts and demand the schools allow our kids to carry them in class.. How about some books covers made out of pig skin..

But in a couple years, 3/4 of the kids will be dropped out anyway. They just have to deal with it for a couple more years.

      Another victory for ‘cloward-piven’…

The strategy of forcing political change through orchestrated crisis. The “Cloward-Piven Strategy” seeks to hasten the fall of capitalism by overloading the government bureaucracy with a flood of impossible demands, thus pushing society into crisis and economic collapse.

Cloward and Piven were inspired by radical organizer [and Hillary Clinton mentor] Saul Alinsky:

“Make the enemy live up to their (sic) own book of rules,” Alinsky wrote in his 1989 book Rules for Radicals. When pressed to honor every word of every law and statute, every Judeo-Christian moral tenet, and every implicit promise of the liberal social contract, human agencies inevitably fall short. The system’s failure to “live up” to its rule book can then be used to discredit it altogether, and to replace the capitalist “rule book” with a socialist one. (Courtesy Discover the Networks.org)

As usual, Blaze is misrepresenting the truth a bit. Cupcakes are not banned. Students can still bring them for lunch if they wish, there are no rules against this. The ban goes against selling them in vending machines, via fundraisers, etc. I will agree it goes too far, but to say that they are banned is not true.

The above story doesn’t say, but it’s probably the ACLU defending their right to carry these knives, the same people trying to remove crosses and the Ten Commandments everywhere. And while we are talking about religious freedom, let‘s bring back Bibles and prayer to Americas’ schools.

I think I would wear a cross as big as their knives and challenge them to throw me out. Then they’d have a fight on their hands! I’m so sick and tired of ignorant people being afraid of these radical religions and letting them do whatever they feel like doing.

So if I were an American Indian would I be allowed to consume peyote during my lunch break to help me with religion class after lunch? Or what about if I were a Rastafarian, I assume it would be ok to bring pot to school and smoke it whenever I felt like it? And I’m sure if I practiced voodoo I could bring chickens to school and cut off their heads at lunch to perform a ritual? And hey, I could use mohameds’ kirpan to do it!

You folks just don’t get the big picture! Cupcakes can contain toy guns baked in them. Where would all the violence end? And all the school boards are trying to figure out what to do with the hand/finger gun (amputation was voted down). Listen, do you hear the Twilight Zone theme, I do.

Can other children bring their religious “Uzzis” to school in Michigan if they are from Jewish families ? The kids from Inter City Detroit should also be allowed to bring their “religious” guns and knives to school since there wouldn’t be any immediate danger to the other students. Rules that allow one group to be exempt from obeying them will only lead to more security problems for all the students and faculties. The School Board had better reconsider it’s ruling before a student or teacher gets their throat cut with one of those “dull butter knives ”.
