SC Gov. Nikki Haley Says No to NAACP’s Call to Remove Confederate Flag From Capitol

South Carolina Republican Gov. Nikki Haley said she has no intention of removing the Confederate flag that flies beside the Statehouse, despite the head of the NAACP calling it a “contradiction” for Haley, an ethnic minority, to allow the flag to fly.

The Confederate flag has flown beside the South Carolina Statehouse since 2000. Gov. Nikki Haley rejected NAACP President Benjamin Jealous' call Monday to remove it.
NAACP President Benjamin Jealous called on Haley to remove the flag during an NAACP conference in Los Angeles on Monday, comparing African American slavery and segregation to the oppression Haley’s ancestors in India faced under British colonialism.
“Perhaps one of the most perplexing examples of the contradictions in this moment in history is that Nikki Haley, South Carolina’s first governor of color, continues to fly the Confederate flag in front of her state’s Capitol,” Jealous said. “Given the similarities between our struggles to end slavery and segregation, and her ancestors’ struggle to end British colonialism and oppression in India, my question to Governor Haley is one that Dr. King often asked himself: What would Gandhi do?”
Haley’s spokesman, Rob Godfrey, said the governor has no intention of renewing the flag debate, which has come under fire before from the NAACP and others who say the flag represents slavery and white supremacy.
“More than a decade ago, under the leadership of a Democratic governor, South Carolinians — Republican and Democrat, black and white — came to a compromise position on the Confederate flag,” Godfrey said. “Many people were uncomfortable with that compromise, but it addressed a sensitive subject in a way that South Carolina as a whole could accept. We don’t expect people from outside the state to understand that dynamic, but revisiting that issue is not part of the governor’s agenda.
According to South Carolina newspaper the State, the flag has flown on the north end of the Statehouse near a monument to Confederate soldiers since 2000. It was placed there as part of a legislative compromise to remove it from the Statehouse dome.

And inasmuch as they cannot so live, while they do remain together there must be the position of superior and inferior, and I as much as any other man am in favor of having the superior position assigned to the White race. . . “People of color? Did crayola take the white crayon out of the box?”
What blacks are doing now is pretending that anybody that doesn’t have white skin is on their side. (Even ones like the governor who look white to most everybody else, but blacks apparently) It’s their way of bringing unwilling participants to their side, using just their disgusting black mouths.
Most people of color want nothing to do with blacks and they don’t need to whine and complain about everything, because they can advance on their own. Blacks can’t. Their only chance of any kind of success is by whining and complaining like imbecillic children. They’re the incompetent squeaky wheels who make noise in order to get oiled.
This is why I’m quick to point out that blacks are the lowest performing people in America today, and they’re not judged by the color of their skin but by their ability, and their propensity for crime and violence. Their problems go much deeper than skin color and is confined strictly to the brain. All the other “people of color” do o.k. but them.
Also, to say “people of color” have the same things in common with blacks is an insult of the highest order which is often acknowledged by these same “people of color,” who want no part of being included in with low black group I.Q.

Whoa whoa whoa! Nothing historical? What in the blazes do you mean? The confederacy stood for states rights over an oppressive government that wanted to rule over everyone else. Yes, they did make use of slavery, but that’s not all it was about. There are still black people out there that carry that flag because of what it stood for. While some people only associate it with slavery, that’s public schools that have brainwashed the patrons.
@ PUBLIUS
What?! A symbol of open rebellion? What are you smoking? The south was just as much a part of the country as the north. They dissagreed on how things should be run and a war was fought to determine it. The confederacy was no more a rebellion that attempted to destroy the country then we we as a country were a rebellion that attempted to destroy the country that was owned by Britain/France/Spain.
You really need to read up on your history again mate. To even call the conferacy a group that tried to destroy the country is idiotic. If anything, you could say it was the north that did that by trying to change the way the country was run. Prior to the civil war movements every state ran things their own way. It was the north that wanted to change that and make a centralized government.
Note: I am not from the south, nor am I racist or anything else of the kind. I live in Philadelphia and before that, Pittsburgh. I simply don’t like when people spout off nonsense when it comes to history.

Your view is twisted. The “constitution touting nut-jobs” are not hypocrites as you tried to point out. The constitution guarantees state sovereignty and a republican form of government, both of which have been comprimised by usurpation and consolidation of power by the federal government over the last century. Slavery was wrong, but it was for the states to implement their own reforms. The South fought for independence from a growing central power. And the Obama administration’s extreme push to undermine the constitution and state sovereignty is unprecedented.

The only thing I might add is that I’m not sure what their attitudes are can be called racism, and I‘m saying that because I know of several instances of outrageous bullying by blacks against Asians because they’re small and different. If they dislike blacks……or any other group…it‘s usually always because they’ve been brutalized constantly by blacks or a friend or family member has.

The difference is that the Civil War was resolved. It’s over. Unfortunately, no one seems to want to offer a cogent argument other than “blah blah you need to read your history blah blah.” Why is it that you Tea Party-ers like to wave the banner of history, but only have vague silliness to defend yourselves when you are challenged.
So lets see:
Southern lawmakers clearly and repeatedly violated the supremacy clause of the Constitution, which states that the Constitution and the laws of the United States are the “supreme law of the land.”
Southern politicians and military commanders directly attacked the military of the United States of America, leading to a war that cost the lives of hundreds of thousands of Americans.
What’s more, Southern legislatures established a new government effectively making themselves a foreign country at war with the United States. Therefore, the Confederate flag is a FOREIGN FLAG. Why is it you “patriotic” americans are so eager to allow SC to fly the flag of a foreign country that made war on the US and killed hundreds of thousands of Americans?
And all of this is beside the point that the Confederacy did not recognize as equal citizens or even as humans the African Americans that currently make up almost 30% of SC’s population.
For all of those who like to wave the banner of history, you seem remarkably blind to the fact that history goes both ways, and that the atrocities of slavery are as real a part of history as the cause of the Confederacy.

Posted on July 31, 2011 at 12:20pmAfrican Americans assume that all non-whites love them simply because they aren’t white. The reality of life is that many black immigrants hate African Americans more than African Americans hate whites. The most racist, anti-African American rant I ever heard resulted from my asking two black immigrants what they thought of, or how they related to, African Americans. The resulting discussion between the non-AA blacks would have left a die-hard KKK supporter shocked, including the fact that their own civil rights leaders had led them and sold them back into slavery through welfare and affirmative action – there is no drive to succeed, only to make someone else pay their way through life. Long and short or it was that the first thing they made sure anyone knew and understood that they were not AA, and not to judge them based on previous experience with AAs. SO, guess what NAACP – with the possible exceptions ofmulsims and La Raza members, you are alone in your perception of your world.

Coming in here and calling people names isn‘t going to win you the respect that you didn’t deserve to begin with.
You probably didn’t know in 1864, the CSA began to abandon slavery. The Civil War was NOT about slavery. Read history and follow the money trail. The CSA wanted to be independent more than they wanted to hold on to slavery. Lincoln used the Emancipation Proclamation as a war tactic.
“If I could preserve the Union by freeing none of the slaves I would do it; if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that. What I do about slavery and the colored race, I do because I believe it helps to save the Union.” – Abraham Lincoln
The flag should stay. It represents an important piece of American History. People like you just want to flush stuff down the toilet because your high school history book told you it was “bad”. Try reading real books based on all facts (even the conveniently left out ones) and not just opinions.

Posted on July 31, 2011 at 1:29pmAnappealtogod,
Your complete lack of logic here is baffling. By and large, the problem with folks such as yourself is not that you don‘t know quotations or haven’t read a book–it’s that the conclusions you draw from what you read are bizarre, ahistorical and, above all, completely self-serving.
So, one simple and quite obvious point is: what the Confederate government was doing in 1864 out of desperation has nothing to do with why the war started in the first place. Your vague assertion that the Confederacy “abandoned” slavery makes no sense for a few reasons.
1) the word “abandoned” is entirely meaningless. It is, in fact, the rhetoric used by Confederate politicians opposed to the arming of blacks in order to fight for the Confederacy. To arm blacks, they claimed, was the same as “abandoning” slavery.
Georgia Governor Joseph Brown:
“When we arm the slaves, we abandon slavery. We can never again govern them as slaves, and make the institution profitable to ourselves or to them, after tens of thousands of them have been taught the use of arms, and spent years in the indolent indulgences of camp life.”
So you see–this was an argument FOR slavery, by a staunch supporter of the institution.
2) While the US Constitution does not mention slavery specifically, the CSA Constitution explicitly protects slavery.

It has announced that the South shall be excluded from the common territory, that the judicial tribunals shall be made sectional, and that a war must be waged against slavery until it shall cease throughout the United States.”
Texas: “That in this free government *all white men are and of right ought to be entitled to equal civil and political rights* [emphasis in the original]; that the servitude of the African race, as existing in these States, is mutually beneficial to both bond and free, and is abundantly authorized and justified by the experience of mankind, and the revealed will of the Almighty Creator, as recognized by all Christian nations; while the destruction of the existing relations between the two races, as advocated by our sectional enemies, would bring inevitable calamities upon both and desolation upon the fifteen slave-holding states.”

Only your richest plantations had slaves as the South in general was poor and most people did not have slaves. People also forget and don’t know that when Lincoln signed the “Emancipation Proclamation” it only freed slaves in the South, not the North or Northern controlled southern states. The main agenda for the South was double taxation. They grew the cotton and got taxed. They sent the cotton to England to have it made into textiles and on its return, was taxed again. The Civil War wasn’t mainly about slavery, as many of the ultra liberal textbook writers and publishers would have you think, it was about STATES RIGHTS along with the double taxation issue. The Southern States didn’t want the Federal Government interfering with how they ran their states. (A lesson we need to relearn today.) Slavery as such was used by the north as a rallying point to garner public opinion for the war effort just as the ultra libs are trying to use it today.
The “Confederate Flag” displayed on the capitol grounds in South Carolina is the Confederate Battle Flag and represents ALL southern soldiers, both black and white.(Many African Americans fought for the south and many died heroic deaths defending the cause.) The flag is a reminder of a tragic war. It is also a strong reminder to all citizens, North, South, East, West, Black, White, Asian that we must never allow slavery to rear its ugly head again anywhere in the world.

Posted on July 30, 2011 at 2:03pmBEAUTIFUL POST!!!!! We still have slavery. The black Americans who are enslaved to the government welfare state. Enslaved to the government for food, shelter, medical care and a host of other enslavement programs, all designed to perpetuate the feeling of hopelessness among the receiptants of the welfare and keep them under the thumbs of the Democrat’s oligarchy. This also insures the re-election of these rulers of the enslaved for fear that they might lose their free tickets.

Posted on July 30, 2011 at 12:21pmBill, you’re mostly correct. The majority of the Southern soldiers didn’t fight for the South though…they actually fought for their State. Posted on July 30, 2011 at 11:15amWhile the Confederate flag is part of U.S. and South Carolina history, it is not good history. It should not be flying anywhere near any state capital. Imagine if it was so worthy that the President thought it should fly over the capitol building in D.C. What would people say? Should the Nazi flag fly near the capital building in Germany because it historical? The confederate flag is a symbol of divisiveness and exclusionary thought. This message should be desplayed prominently next to the flying the flag on the same grounds.

Posted on July 30, 2011 at 11:10amThat’s not the Confederate Flag. The Confederacy had three flags: “Stars
Report Post »and Bars” which resembled the original U.S. Flag but had three stripes, and 7-13 stars. Second, “The Stainless Banner” which had the flag up there (a battle flag) in the upper left corner of a white field. Finally, “The Bloodstained Banner” adopted just before their defeat added a single vertical red stripe to the right side of the previous design.
Personally, I’d prefer it if none of these flags were flown, but that doesn’t mean I can force that on others.

Posted on July 30, 2011 at 11:28amIt is not a question of letting go of the past. Even Abraham Lincoln said, “Poor is the nation that has no heroes, but beggared is the nation that has heroes and forgets them.” This attempt to discredit and disgrace the South is abhorrent. The flags were never seen as symbols of slavery. If that is the case, then so is the U.S. flag, as there were four slave states that remained in and fought for the Union. So, is it also a symbol of slavery? Ulysses S. Grant owned slaves. There were NY businessmen who owned plantations in the South, especially around Natchez. If you choose to see these flags as symbols of slavery, you are just showing ignorance. The attack on this flag is nothing more than one more little shove or nudge to move the political window so that eventually things will become the norm. They attack the flags of the South now, but don’t doubt for one moment that the U. S. flag is next on the agenda. Don’t take this threat and attack lightly. Stand firm and resist.
