Southern Baptists Back a ‘Clean’ Version of the DREAM Act

Southern Baptists Back a Clean Version of the DREAM ActIf it’s presented in a “cleaner” form, the DREAM Act — the controversial bill that would provide illegal immigrants who were brought to America as children with a path to earn legal status — has support from the world’s largest Baptist denomination.

According to Richard Land, who serves as the president of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Ethics and Liberty Commission, the group could back the proposal with some conditions. To gain SBC support, the law would need to be amended to prevent the young adults benefitting from it from using their newfound status to help their relatives enter the country — or gain legal status. Listen to Land talk about these views with FOX News’ Alan Colmes:

These issues were outlined in a letter Land sent to Sen. Charles Schumer of New York and Sen. John Cornyn of Texas (both men serve on the Senate’s subcommittee on immigration).

In explaining the commission’s position to the subcommittee, Land wrote: “The children of undocumented immigrants who were brought here by their parents should not be forced to bear the full penalty of their presence in the nation illegally. To consign them to lives often-times bordering on poverty levels for actions in which they had no part is too severe a penalty.”

The often politically conservative group earlier this month passed a resolution at its annual meeting in Phoenix advocating a path to legalization for non-criminal illegal immigrants, but it did not mention the DREAM Act specifically.

That resolution also called on the government to prioritize border security and hold businesses accountable for their hiring. And it called on Southern Baptists to minister to all people and to reject bigotry and harassment toward all people, regardless of their country of origin or immigration status.

The Associates Press contributed to this report.

Well, I wondered if the 44th had roped in any more “Faith” organizations when he quoted: Exodus 22:21 Thou shalt neither vex a stranger, nor oppress him: for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt.
Sure would be wonderful if people did not take 1 verse out of context to sell their agenda with it. The word in Hebrew means 01616. ger, gare or (fully) geyr (gare); from 1481; properly, a GUEST; by implication, a foreigner:–alien, sojourner, stranger.
    Don’t consider illegal immigrants guests!

Bleeding hearts for “children” are ruining this country. They are here illegally. Send them back where they came from, as we owe them NOTHING. They have already received a free education thanks to the taxpayers of this nation. Let them put blame where the blame should rest, on their parents. If they want to live in America, let them enter through the same means as has thousands of welcomed legal aliens. Let them return to their legal countries and work to improve them, not sit in ethnic classes ranting and raving about the wicked United States. No pity for them, and totally disagree with the Southern Baptists.

“…and to reject bigotry and harassment toward all people, regardless of their country of origin or immigration status.”

Well, my country of origin is the USA and my status is legal…so will someone do something about the bigotry and harassment I receive from foreign born illegals who protest in this country against people who believe in following the laws of this great nation?

While I have compassion for children of illegals, if this government would not let illegals stay here illegally, have children in hospitals they don’t pay for, take up space in schools they don’t pay for, and are supported by a government they do not honor and respect…we would not have to go through this time and again.

It sounds reasonably fair – But who gets the FRONT door slammed in their face? If they have a 5 year record as a taxpayer with the IRS so we know they aren’t faming the jobs under the table AWAY from our youth (minority and otherwise) then maybe okay.
The either side of it is Mexico will never solve it‘s problems if it’s citizens just run away.
This truly is more of an Exploitation issue on the behalf of progressives/Democrats then it is a humanitarian issue. What possible reason could make progressive exploitation want to see Mexico succeed? NONE! And the progs will always point away the blame to anyone as a distraction for their exploitative deeds – making them doubly evil.

This is a difficult issue. I used to get very angry at illegal immigration, but I’m much more ambivalent now. My libertarianism only extends so far and I still find myself slightly bothered by the anti-American sentiment expressed by some immigrants. I favor expanding legal immigration to make it easier for Mexican nationals who want to become Americans to do so, but I still find myself opposed to blanket amnesty for those who immigrated illegally.
My libertarian conversion has curbed a lot of the anger I had at the disturbing feeling that my culture was being displaced, but I don‘t think it’s wrong or racist to feel that way. It’s a natural feeling that Mexicans or any other country would feel if the situation were reversed.

Every illegal male Mexican I ever knew did not want to become American citizens.. they just want free everything. They brag about the jobs they have and how white men won’t work them. They send a lot of their money back to their families in Mexico, so American money supports Mexico. I am always amazed at people who just can’t get the concept of the word ILLEGAL! I have seen Mexican get free health care, and yet our poor are turned away. A illegal I know had his knees replaced, yet a person I know who lives on 18.000 a year who is an American cannot have the same surgery. I have seen Mexican women with 5 or 6 kids in tow, with expensive cars, well dressed, hair styyled, nails done using food stamps. I medicaid cards for meds. When will American’s wake up and figure out that this country is in debt up to their eyeballs and alot of it is because of illegals, Now they want us to educate them so they can remain in this country. Well I say if their parents came here illegal then there children born here are every bit as much illegal as the parent. Why are our children forced to learn spanish in grade school.. to make illegals feel more comfortable. Excuse me but my ancestors came here legally and they had to learn english. Our government then did not say you have to learn Norwegian to make them feel at home. My as well face it people our government ruined this country and it is no ones fault but their own. Our fault id for voting them back in over and over again. God Bless the U

The solution is to send the entire family back to Mexico. The parents snuck in, and had babies on American soil, when they didn’t have any right to do so. Mexicans, take you babies back to Mexico, where they belong.

Grow up and CHANGE the Government of Mexico. Why should Mexicans be under the rule of drug cartels, and corrupt Government Officials? Be the adults you’re supposed to be.

What would happen if let’s say the Dream Act is passed and all of the parents of these children are sent back to their country of origin? Would anyone be willing to open their home to these innocent children and teach them what America is really all about? I would.

Or maybe allow the whole family to stay with work permits for the parents so they can care for the kids and pay taxes until the children reach the age of 18 and then the parents would have to return to their country of origin. The kids would be given an option of staying or leaving with their parents at that time.

      Just some ideas…..

This problem won’t go away quickly and all of the politicians are going to sing to their bases and keep telling them what they want to hear while continuing to do nothing.

This movement by the SBC leadership has NO MERIT. “Don’t punish the innocent children” is their rally call. Hey, American citizens are not responsible for what their parents did. Blame the parents that came to the USA illegally. The majority of illegal immigrants come to the USA hoping that through their children they will someday be granted amnesty and eventual citizenship.

As an Independent Baptist missionary I legally moved our family to Brazil in 1974. For the past 37 years I’ve lived in Brazil with my wife as permanent residents, not citizens. My youngest son, who was 8 years old when we arrived in Brazil, has a permanent resident visa, not citizenship. He is married to a Brazilian and has two children born in Brazil. They have been granted American citizenship based on their father’s American birth. They have dual citizenship, Brazilian and American. My son does not have a dual citizenship although he has a “Brazilian” family”. So, why should children of illegal immigrants be granted immunity and citizenship ? Most other countries do not give citienship to illegal immigrants. Believe there are millions of illegals living and working in Brazil.

A solution presented in honesty with politics not involved. To secure the border, prevent hiring of illegals, and to accept the children that only know America as home is a comprehensive solution. This will be rejected by the open borders crowd, the total amnesty crowd, and all those trying to find divisiveness instead of solutions. Just about everyone.

We don’t need a “comprehensive” solution. Put the military on the border, create a buffer zone, and fire on anyone crossing without permission. Then fine the living hell out of companies who hire illegals, and send to prison for LIFE anyone helping them attain fake ID’s. Comprehensive not required, nor is a 1500 page bill.

The Southern Baptist Convention has been hijacked in certain places by Leftist Progressives just like the Unions have been with Communists. These few do not represent Southern Baptists as a whole even though they may think they do just because they passed some resolution at a meeting even thought the majority of Southern Baptists don’t even know they supported this and once they find out will probably cause huge divisions for these peoples support of illegals just like when Richard Land came out saying he represented Southern Baptists in support of the ground zero Mosque a comment he had to later retract because people were upset that he proclaimed to represent them as a whole instead of expressing his viewpoint. Richard Land should be fired from his position immediately and has done nothing but damage the Southern Baptist Convention. This is also true of Paul Jiminez who was one of the crimmigrant supporters in the Southern Baptist Convention who compared our immigrations law that are being passed to being inhumane and allowing exploitation. How dare someone have the audacity to stand up for criminals and when we humanely try to enforce our laws they label the citizens of this country as inhumane exploiters. These people are a disgrace and should be removed from the Southern Baptist convention.

If they had spent the last 50 years saving souls, feeding the poor, educating kids, instead of building fancy buildings, paying their pastors at rates 5x that of their average family in their communities, and protecting their tax free status, we would living in a much, much better world today.

To all of you who are bashing the Southern Baptist for this, I want each of you to think what it would be like to be brought into a foreign country when you were, say 6 months old. You grow up here and you go to school here and you maybe get a college degree here. But, through no fault of your own because your parents brought you here illegally, you are suddenly jerked back to say, Mexico, where you can barely even speak the language, much less understand the culture. You find that you can get a job in a car part factory earning about 7 dollars a day. But you can’t find a place to live for less than $150.00 a month (you do the math). You think that is fair? I agree totally with the SBC. Give these people, who are American in everything but on paper, a chance to become citizens easily and quickly, but limit it to them only, not every relative they have in Mexico or here illegally.
