Speaker Boehner Pulls Out of Talks for ‘Big Deal’ Debt Plan

Politico:

Speaker John Boehner is pulling out of negotiations for a large-scale deficit reduction plan.

In a statement released by the Ohio Republican Saturday night — just a day before talks with President Barack Obama — Boehner said the “White House will not pursue a bigger debt reduction agreement without tax hikes.”

After speaking with Obama — who is hosting a key meeting Sunday evening on steps forward on the debt issue — Boehner issued the following statement:
“Despite good-faith efforts to find common ground, the White House will not pursue a bigger debt reduction agreement without tax hikes. I believe the best approach may be to focus on producing a smaller measure, based on the cuts identified in the Biden-led negotiations, that still meets our call for spending reforms and cuts greater than the amount of any debt limit increase.”

Mr. Boehner and the president met privately at the White House last weekend and the speaker along with the president was a chief advocate of trying to negotiate a large agreement that would include spending cuts, new tax revenues and significant changes to social programs such as Medicare and Medicaid and perhaps even Social Security.

But the speaker, who had suggested Congress could perhaps produce as much as $1 trillion in new revenues, was encountering stiff resistance from fellow Republicans who are determined not to support any package containing proposals that could be construed as a tax increase.

How many times can you reach across an aisle and get an arm bitten off before you learn not to reach across that aisle? No compromise! Come on Boehner! This was your first “right” move! No more golf outings. No more talks. No more reaching across the aisle. No more linguini for a spine. Stand firm and represent the people who allowed you to be where you are!

I don’t have a problem with a tax hike as long as it goes hand in hand with a major debt reduction AND is used properly and not for entitlements or more of MOOcheles vacations.

Not a cave yet. Only a cave if they go for new taxes or raise the debt ceiling more than what they cut.

The problem I see is this: We are out of time! Americans debating the proper role of government is no longer a luxury we can afford. For all practical purposes, America is a car – speeding towards the edge of a cliff. The Democrats have the foot on the gas, confident that the cliff is not real; while Republicans are too focused on meaningless gestures like the recent 38 billion dollar cut in spending, to know how to bring the car to a stop short of the cliff. The issue is that without an extreme change in course there is no longer enough time to stop. It makes little difference to the ultimate result of the crash if we as a nation have the gas pedal pressed to the floor or if we simply coast over the edge. Either way America is a burning wreck at the bottom. Geithner pretends that the world will stop spending if the debt ceiling is not raised but I am not convinced. It is the only tool that responsible legislators have to stop the madness. The Feds should pay the debt service first, and then prioritize all other expenses. Some things will not get paid and that is fine. It will be incentive for the thieves of the political class to find what to cut to make ends meet. If the administration believes that we are unable to even pay for debt service out of receipts to the treasury then we are bankrupt now and should face that fact.

Government programs are like adding software programs to your pc. One doesn’t even use all the programs, but yet keeps them on the pc anyway. Eventually, the hard drive fills up, and crash.

The democraps love ‘Baseline Budgeting’. That way funding for their socialist programs increases automatically by a predetermined amount every year, and it provides them cover since they don’t have to vote on it. The programs get funded, regardless of whether or not they are functioning as intended, actually need that amount of funding, or the funding is available. If we were only funding constitutional programs, we would have no budget problems and taxes would be reasonable.

I for one, would like to see these ‘negotiations’ done out in the open. As it is now, we just have to ‘try to believe’ what these politicians are telling us.

Boehner needs to either support the Ryan initiative or clearly propose a Balanced Budge Amendment as part of any deal—-or come up with more than ‘minor cuts’ agreed to thru Biden’s negotiations. His tacit agreement to ‘tax cuts’ is a cop out.

This is really a failure on his part, and it will be spun and derided by all. Mr. Speaker has paid nothing but lip-service to real spending reform, and its gonna cost HIM, US and the American people, in the end.

      Dayton,
It’s nice that you have some confidence in your representatives but I promise you that the Republicans will cave in and allow the debt ceiling to be raised. They will gloss it over with talk of compromise and spending cuts (that in reality are less than meaningless) and it is all a farce. Both parties are complicit in this financial mess we’re in. They both are controlled completely by the Federal Reserve because that’s who holds the purse strings. The Fed is an unconstitutional privately owned and operated cartel that has been lining their pockets with taxpayer money for almost a hundred years with the full cooperation of Republicans and Democrats. The sad thing is that very very few of the taxpayers have any awareness of what is happening to them. Trust me, this debt ceiling debate is all for show. It will be raised because 100% of this nations economy, every last penny, is backed by nothing but debt.

We will see Boehner crying again when he is at his next re-election campaign, but the crying won’t be about becoming Speaker of the House, his crying will be because he won’t be returning to Washington DC.
