ELKHART LAKE, Wis. (AP) — Driver Joe Foster was hospitalized after a crash with Gunter Schaldach during a Grand Am race at Road America on Saturday that sent Schaldach’s car flipping over a fence and into the woods.
Schaldach said he was “totally fine” after the spectacular accident, but Foster was airlifted to a Milwaukee-area hospital. A series spokesman said Foster was awake and alert, but the extent of his injuries was unclear.
Schaldach‘s Camaro had a brake malfunction and plowed into the back of Foster’s Mazda going into Turn 1 at the four-mile road course. Schaldach’s car skidded at high speed through a runoff area and into a tire barrier — then flipped completely over a retaining fence and into a wooded area behind the turn.
In a radio interview, Schaldach estimated his car was going about 160 mph when he wrecked.

Posted on June 26, 2011 at 3:01amGnarly. I watched the NASCAR Grandnational series (What I call Minor League NASCAR since they like to play musical series sponsors) race there later that day and I never noticed any kind of damage to the tire barrier or fence in turn 1. Musta had some crackerjack maintenance crews working during the rest of the Rolex event.
All I noticed in the Grandnational series race was Jacque Villeneuve going amateur hour on a late lap restart and taking two drivers out who were in contention.

Posted on June 26, 2011 at 3:21pmHaving been a Trans-Am team pit crew member at this race track previously I understand this may look shocking to you.
World Auto Racing is a testing ground for transportation safety. Indy cars sell their telemetric’s to NASA and the U.S. Government (NHSTA). These drivers survived due to decades of material testing for your safety.
The special foam currently used in racing drivers head gear is now being applied to foam lining in infant restraint seating devices.
These proven materials are in use on airplanes, trains, taxicabs, shuttle buses, etc. that most people use in their lifetime. Having safe travel is due to auto racing!

Posted on June 26, 2011 at 10:23amThey need to stop using tire walls. The tires will always deflect a car vertically if it hits with enough speed. Foam barriers work better. I raced at Road America in the 80‘s and 90’s. Turn one is a real butt-clencher.
