It could be that the guy in the video below does not read The Blaze. If he did, he would know that trying to post a speeding video featuring yourself can lead to your own arrest. But that may be exactly what he wanted.
Back in December, we posted a story and a video of a guy filming himself going 190 mph in Oklahoma, only to be arrested later once police saw the footage on YouTube. Fast forward two months and we have the story of a guy in Oregon getting pulled over and arrested while trying to film his own version on a rainy night — this time the speedometer hit 140 mph:
[WARNING: The music in the background may contain some cuss words]
Reuters reports:
Stanislav Vadimovich Bakanov was pulled over by police on Oregon Interstate 5 after he was clocked driving his black 2005 BMW at 118 mph. He filmed Sheriff’s Deputy Ryan Postlewait as he approached the car.
When Postlewait asked why he was videotaping, Bakanov said he was filming his speedometer, and his arrest, to post on Youtube. The video later revealed that Bakanov had attained speeds in excess of 140 mph.
He was arrested and confined in Marion County jail Saturday night, charged with reckless driving and speeding. It was his third speeding incident in the past year. The video was confiscated and will be used as evidence against him.

A hotel doorman “borrowed” one and was clocked doing 240km in a 70km zone on an elevated highway (that’s about 150mph in a 45mph zone). He was arrested, fined $2,600, got 42 demerit points and had his license suspended. http://news.sympatico.ctv.ca/canada/montreal_driver_clocked_at_240_kmh_in_70_zone/f8532b9b

Posted on February 15, 2011 at 4:30amTo The_Ancient, and you would be completely wrong in all your defenses. If you had read the article, the young man was pulled over later for traveling 118 MPH which is well over the posted speed limit. Secondly this young man was holding the recording device at the time of the stop and asked by the officer why he was filming and the young man told him that he had been filming his speedometer while driving down the road. Thirdly they confiscated said recording device which contained video of the speedometer reading speeds in excess of 130MPH as well periodically in said video you could see exit and other highway signs designating the area in which he was in let alone that it showed that he was indeed on public property when performing the act. So there you have the preponderance of the evidence that would blow your proposed defenses completely out of the water. The best thing this kid can do is plead nolo contendere and set himself upon the mercy of the court. Most likely given his priors he would end up with a hefty fine, possible 6 month or 1 year license suspension, a year or so of probation, as well as mandatory attendance of a defensive driving course.

Posted on February 15, 2011 at 5:59pmNo Ancient, what I said was that you were wrong with all the defenses you proposed not just because you stated “short of a confession”. You see there is this little issue in matters of the court called “preponderance of evidence” in that a case is won or lost based upon what can be presented as proof. I simply ascertained that according to the information in the article and that it made mention of priors that your proposed defenses would not hold much weight due to a preponderance of evidence. If there is enough evidence to prove guilt then a confession is more or less an addition to the evidence presented and is not necessarily needed to convict.
Report Post »the_ancient
Posted on February 15, 2011 at 4:07amThere is absolutely zero, short of confession, that any prosecutor could convict.
First off how does the county even know that the incident took place in the county he was arrested, unless they can PROVE location, the case is out right there, further, there is no Face on the video, so the car was driven by SOMEONE at the speed, prove it was the person they arrested. Further still, going 140mph is NOT automatically illegal, only doing so on a PUBLIC road, he could have been on private property, or some other area that would not be violation of the law.
I could probably come up with about 100 more defenses before trial…
I am still very alarmed with the notion that a random youtube video is all that is needed for arresting someone.

Posted on February 15, 2011 at 1:47amI didn’t need to go to church to pray to God the night that while driving on a super slippery sheen of frozen ice, I passed car after car that were either sliding into one another or sailing off the road into the side embankment of snow. It had been raining and the rain immediately was turned into freezing black ice. I slowed by taking my foot completely off the gas peddle and manning the emergency brake should I need to engage it if needed as an extra deterrent, while ever so lightly pressuring down on the brake in as slow and purposeful manner as could be exercised as the situation was a life and death one. All the while my heart was sinking as I saw more and more cars sliding into oblivion, while watching the lights of the cars behind me getting closer and closer, fearing I would get rear ended and sent flying into the median or into the on coming traffic.

Posted on February 15, 2011 at 3:38pmYour first instinct was right ( letting off the gas ) everything else you did could have killed you as much or more so than going 135 mph. NEVER touch an “E” brake while driving EVER, that is what you do if you want to spin your car and what drifters do to initiate their drift ( driving side ways while spinning the rear wheels. Secondly you never touch your brakes on ice, black or other. The idea is to not brake traction and slowly steer the car through it with no fast or harsh actions.

By your logic one should never leave the home unless the weather is perfect.
“Driving recklessly is cool until you lose control and kill someone”
That can be said of just about everything whether it is reckless or not. How many people lose control of their car in perfect weather driving the legal speed and end up in a canal or tree line? What might be reckless to you might be common case for someone else.
Getting on a dirt bike and jumping hills seems crazy, driving on ice seems crazy but people still seem to chance it, hell if you stop to think about it, riding a bike is insane. Much more so in traffic, even more so in New York City traffic yet people do it everyday.
Get in a plane, while the safest form of transport was once considered reckless even barnstorming.
You are for freedom or your not.
PS more accidents happen at rush hour than at speed and that is a fact.

Posted on February 15, 2011 at 10:08amGoing that fast involves more than just pushing down on the accelerator. At that speed a small chuck hole can flip your car. Additionally, the average vehicle can hit that speed, but isn’t made to sustain it…and once it hits that speed your car has aged a million years. Vehicles that run at those speeds have specific fuels and setups…and they have professional drivers. If you feel the need for speed, take a course at a raceway. You’ll live longer…and so will your car.
