Spin Doctor: Watch What Happens When David Axelrod Is Asked Whether The Private Sector Is ‘Doing Fine’

During an interview on CNN’s “State of the Union With Candy Crowley,” Obama campaign senior adviser David Axelrod found himself nearly incapable of answering one, simple question: is the private sector “doing fine”?

The question, of course, is a reference to remarks made by President Obama during a news conference on Friday.

“The private sector is doing fine,” said President Obama.

“Where we’re seeing weaknesses in our economy have to do with state and local government oftentimes cuts initiated by governors or mayors who are not getting the kind of help that they have in the past from the Federal government and who don’t have the same kind of flexibility as the government in dealing with fewer revenues coming in,” he added.

While some are saying the president’s remarks are proof that he is “out of touch,” others are simply asking “is the private sector doing fine”?

“Let’s start out with a really simple ‘yes’ or ‘no.’ Do you agree with the president that the private sector is doing fine?” CNN’s Crowley asked.

Axelrod responded with everything but a committed answer:

I agree with the president who called the press conference on Friday to say that we need to take a series of very urgent steps to accelerate job creation in this country because we have storm clouds rolling in from Europe.

So, Candy, the press conference was called to press for hiring, a tax credit for small businesses, to press for clearing red tape away so that families who have underwater homes can refinance on today’s low interest rates and save thousands of dollars a year, and yes to push to give state and local governments help to rehire some of the hundreds and hundreds of thousands of teachers, firefighters, and police who have been laid off in this, uh, last couple of years.

And we’ve created 4.3 million private sector jobs in the last 27 months but we’ve lost almost half a million public sector jobs and half of those are teachers.

Impressive, but not an answer.

“So, bottom line, is the private sector doing fine?” Crowley asked a second time.

“The private sector, uh, we need to accelerate job creation in the private sector,” Axelrod responded.

“Right,” said an apprehensive Crowley.

“One of the ways that we can do that,” Axelrod continued, “is putting teachers and firefighters and police back to work because those are good middle class jobs.”

“That’s the public sector,” Crowley said, pointing out the obvious.

“But that’ll help accelerate the recovery,” Axelrod argued.

He continued:

The private, uh, the small business tax cut will help the private sector. The refinancing will help the private sector because people will have more money in their pockets to spend. There are series of steps that we can take right now that will help undergird the economy against the, uh, forces that are arrayed. You see what’s going on in Europe in particular.

The first quarter of this year was the best in terms of private sector job creation; was the best in six years. We’ve had a slowdown in the last three months largely because of global events, but the president has said is that we need to take some urgent action and he’s called on Congress to do that. They’ve sat on their hands thus far. They’re more eager to have a debate over an out-of-context clause in his remarks than the substance of what he said.

“But I think that we put in the context at the open, you put it in context in the open, I just want to know whether the administration, whether you believe that the private sector is doing fine,” Crowley asked for the third time.

“It’s certainly doing better than the public sector,” he finally kinda-sorta answered.

This story has been updated.

      Does Axelrod actually believe he doesn’t look rediculous?

      A simple “yes” or “no” question turns into some twisted reverse-newspeak that seems to make Axelrod believe he is ACTUALLY answering the question in a more serious and complete manner!

      We all know he is:
      skirting the question – check;
      using the forum to propogate half-truths and lies – check;
      unable to answer in the affirmative – check;

This guy‘s idea of ’spinning’ is avoidance, obfuscation, lies and refusal to answer a question. Since Obama came to power DJIA is up over 50% from about 8000 to 12500. That is not only just fine, but far better than under bush who took DJIA from about 11000 down to 8000 during his 8 year reign of error.

      DJIA is best way to measure the private sector, so President Obama is spot on as over 100 million investors have money in stocks, funds, 401k and annuities.

      With cooperation from the pub congress, we could be doing better, but they won‘t pass Obama’s job’s bill, even though over 12 million Americans are looking for jobs.

      If you care about your children and your money, you will vote Democrat in November.

      What does romney propose and say? No one knows. Another question: why is romney afraid to have a press conference? When has he had one? When he starts to speak, his poll numbers will go down, not bright.

      Axelrod has been sprayed with DDT Acronym for “Dubious Double Talk”. If you want a direct answer to your question all you have to do is ask one that he likes. It’s that simple. Your lucky he didn’t invoke the fifth amendment or tell you that you totally misunderstood what the President may have thought he said and was taken out of context with the intent of making the president look like a fool. I will however in the interest of furthering a mutual agreement as to what the President wanted to get across to the American people will have my staff contact you later in the week to discuss what they want you to know. Now so that we will not waist any more time on this issue let’s talk about the tax cuts for the rich. All in one breath.

      The Spin Dr.’s are out doing the thing that they do best, unfortunately it is not the truth.
      Get a grip Axelrod, we are not a country for government workers, we are a country of the people and for the people and that doesn’t mean hire as many government workers as you can and then stick it to the private sector to pick up the tab. Get rid of the regulations and the taxes on the small business owners and the economy will come back. We have literally killed the economy here in California with taxes and regulations and they are still going at it. The only thing that will be left here in California will be desert rats, opposums, and coyotes after Brown and the Democrats get through, along with the O.C.-GOP Central Committee.

    With all the money that was spent in the public sector in the stimulus and the omnibus spending bill I find it hard to believe the public sector is doing badly. If he is using as a comparison the number of teachers, firemen and policemen that were hired but not funded with those two wasteful expenditures to what is actually affordable or needed in today’s world of couse there are fewer of each. If you hire you must be able to pay. If you hire in the public sector you need to not only fund that hire for his salary but forever the pension and health care costs for the rest of his/her life. Public hiring for the sake of creating jobs is a drain on society, The private sector cannot support more public sector jobs. Trim the government to what is needed to perform the task, not as a jobs program.

    Man David how is it you can stand in that pile of (insert vulgarity here) and yet claim it doesn’t stink. Obama is out to destroy the private companies it shows in practically every action he has done in office. Seriously If David was hit by a pie in the face from Obama himself he would stand there and claim its the republicans that threw that “cake”. I swear how can anyone trust this guy to speak any facts on shows.

      agree. it’s all about creating more “government jobs” for their zombies to follow the dictates of Dear Leader / Big Brother ! Pretty transparent ( not sure what Dear Leader plans to do once he has “ redistributed ” all of the evil “rich ” taxpayers’ goods . But guess , by then, the zombies and everyone will be under his thumb )

      I don’t think any of these ******** know anyone in the private sector. They would like nothing more than to have the private sector vanish into thin air, so they can control every aspect of our lives. Gosh darn…those pesky freedom lovers just keep on gettin’ in their way.
