‘Spiritual Women…on a Mission’: TLC to Premiere New Series Called ‘Preachers Wives’

TLC to Premiere New Series Called Preachers Wives About Christian WomenTLC’s programming choices generally range from “bizarre” to “curious,” as so many of the network’s shows are centered upon subjects that may seem foreign to the majority of the country.

But it is this surprise and unfamiliarity that make many of the bizarre projects rousing successes. After all, not many parents have eight children (cue the now-cancelled “Kate Plus 8“), polygamy is a foreign concept for most of the nation (”Sister Wives“) and abstinence, sadly, is becoming more of a past-time than it is a contemporary practice (”Virgin Diaries“). The list of uncommon programming concepts could go on…and on.

Now, the network is extending into territory that other media outlets, like Bravo and VH1, have already tackled — creating programs that focus on “wives” (Bravo has the “Housewives” series; VH1 has “Mob Wives” and “Basketball Wives”). TLC will be airing a new show — likely during the fourth quarter (no release date has been set) — called “Preacher Wives.”

BuzzFeed quotes a network press release that reads:

These larger-than-life women play a dynamic role in maintaining and expanding their devoted following. They manage day-to-day politics, help troubled or needy congregants and hire and fire staff. Some even step up to the pulpit to spread their own personalized sermons of inspiration and enlightenment. Viewers will also get a peek into their lives as mothers – seeing if they can strike a balance between being a parent and a respected public figure.

The standards are high and the expectations can be overwhelming, but these driven, spiritual women are on a mission to overcome challenges, break molds and expand their group of devotees.

TLC to Premiere New Series Called Preachers Wives About Christian WomenHere’s where the situation gets even more intriguing. According to Entertainment Weekly, the same production team that created the “Real Housewives of Atlanta” series is teaming up with TLC to put together this new docu-series. The three Christian women who will be followed are based in Atlanta and cameras will capture their role in the church, their daily activities — even sermons they occasionally deliver.

“With most praise in religious communities directed towards male preachers, we are thrilled to give these remarkable ladies the spotlight they crave and deserve,” said Steven Weinstock, the president of True Entertainment.

Considering the characters that are represented on other wife-focused series, it remains to be seen whether this show will be a detriment or a positive PR boost to pastors’ wives everywhere.

Sheesh, really pastor’s wives “crave the spotlight”? UH NO! I”m married to a pastor and the last thing I need is more people talking about me or looking at me or thinking they know what I”m going to say or do and passing that little bit of non information on…

But, not that I support this idea, I think it’s ridiculous, there IS a lot of drama to be had for fodder in the life of a pastor’s family. It’s about living life with messy people and giving of yourselves. And that’s not always pretty and can be dramatic. Very few people really understand what a pastor does or what his family sacrifices to live with a pastor. So, if that’s what makes your boat float…

I am a preacher’s wife and we certainly do not “crave” any spotlight. We are much too busy doing those things that are pleasing to God, and we live in a “fishbowl” as it is. I think I will forgo this one,

If the Black Church tolerates an attack upon the ‘First Ladies’ of the congregation, they have sealed their pact with evil.

Isn’t this the same network that did American Muslim, the show that actually offended America? Sister Wives is still on the air. American Muslim is not. Now it’s American Christian? Most Americans are familiar and comfortable with the Pastor’s wife and the life they lead. Women in the pulpit is not remotely unusual in my Pentecostal church, though women are not usually Senior Pastors. How is this show worthy? It will be like watching grass grow.

    @thethirdarchon.

You’re supposed to interpret that culturally you know. Or else the Lord would not have bestowed spiritual gifts to women which he most definately did. Explain Elizabeth Elliott who, after her husband was martyred took over his job as preacher and teacher and did quite well thank you very much.

Did you fail to read the entire chapter???

Prophecy preferred to the gift of tongues. (1-5) The unprofitableness of speaking in unknown languages. (6-14) Exhortations to worship that can be understood. (15-25) Disorders from vain display of gifts; (26-33) and from women speaking in the church. (35-40)

It is about order and decency. In the day the women were not educated…that has changed over time and there are positions in the Church for women and when appropriate they can speak out. AS THE LAW SAYS…changed over time and people have no understanding of the Word…sad that you would use that one isolated statement without understanding context and pretext.

You should study the bible to understand such things before trying to light a fire.

At the bottom of the link is Matthew Henry’s read of it and I believe all concur.

You could have picked out a better verse to do battle with…but you missed it. LOL Try again.

That was prophecy fulfilled…you need to read the entire Word of God to know that…Christ’s ministers do not now need to work miracles to prove their message; the Scriptures are proved to be of Divine origin, and this renders those without excuse who reject or neglect them.

This statement was written by paul to specific women in a specific (Corinthian) church, where there was a problem with many women, who were not receiving words from God, interrupting and speaking over leaders and those reading the letters that went out to the early churches. I highly doubt that a faith began by Jesus, who had several women close to him when it was scandalous to be with women who were not your wife, would tell women to sit down and shut up if they are truly speaking the word of God and witnessing the gospel of Christ. Goodness, I haven’t had to debate this verse since college, I would have thought that those who frequent this site would be intelligent enough not to take scripture, or anything else, out of context.

@The Third Archon That goes to show how much you know of God’s word. It is not a law! Read the subject matter. Where in the 10 commandments does it say, ““women should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission?”

yeah just like they should be at home huh? My wife gets more respect than that! You need to research WHY they were told to be quiet and not to speak. It had nothing to do with giving men total speaking authority in the church. It had all to do with a group of women who just wouldn’t shut up during that day–in that area. Us men are just fortunate it wasn’t a group of men or the scripture might have reflected men to be quiet in church!

How wrong can you be? This will be nothing but a Christian bashing hatefest from the left. The reason is that non-believers do not understand the workings of a Church and it’s people. They will get a boatload of ammo to hate God and Chrisians even more…
