Spooky: New Photos Peer Inside an Abandoned Island Leper Colony Near NYC

Debris, decay, and the unmerciful growth of nature define this abandoned island for banished people. North Brother Island was once the last refuge of society’s castaways, and though it has been left to rot for 50 years, new photographs have breathed life into this eerie facility.

Photographer and historian Ian Ference  received special access to the site, and his photos have appeared in The Daily Mail. What you will see below is a haunting photographic collage that reminds us all of a long-forgotten place.

A former quarantine zone, leper colony and centre for drug addicts, these spooky buildings were once home to hundreds of patients.

But the Daily Mail has highlighted its insidious reputation, stating that it was once “a place of indescribable misery, which one inmate compared to the notorious black hole of Calcutta.”

While very few New Yorkers even know about this abandoned facility, it is only 350 yards from highly populated areas of the Bronx. North Brother Island was used as a quarantine centre for the first time back in 1885.

Soon after is opening, it was home to a few lepers, but its most infamous resident was an Irish immigrant who came to be known as ‘Typhoid Mary.”

After years moving from family to family as a cook, spreading the typhoid infection wherever she went despite showing no symptoms herself, police forcibly relocated Mary to North Brother Island.

She spent years confined to wandering her wooded prison island.

North Brother Island also had a front row-seat to the 1904 fire onboard the passenger ship, General Slocum. The steam ship, which was carrying a Lutheran Church outing on Manhattan’s East River, caught fire. Of the 1342 people on board, 1,021 were killed in the disaster, and most of the dead were  women and children.

Offiicially Closed in 1963, North Brother Island has become something of an urban legend to those who knows about it.  Protected species of birds are its only year-round inhabitants and  armed authorities patrol the waters to ensure the former quarantine zone is never violated.

Photographer Ian Ference told the Daily Mail: “This has got to be one of America’s most important places to visit,’ he said. ‘Historically it has had a notorious and sometimes sinister reputation.”

Ference added that ‘It was established as a forced quarantine camp for people suffering from infectious and often fatal diseases such as typhoid, scarlet fever, yellow fever and typhus. There were six people suffering from leprosy confined here in wooden huts.”

Spooky: See Inside An Abandoned Island Leper Colony Next to NYC

During this time in New York’s history, there was widespread fear that unclean immigrants from European countries like Ireland and Italy  were forced to live in crowded and unsanitary conditions that allowed dangerous disease to spread like wildfire.

‘Health authorities had a mandate from the people to track down and detain those infected with certain diseases. Unless they happened to be wealthy enough to afford a private clinic, these poor souls would be sent to quarantine areas. And among the most notorious quarantines was North Broth Island.

Spooky: See Inside An Abandoned Island Leper Colony Next to NYC

Conditions on the island, even for the time, were considered deplorable. The mortality rate for patients there was high, and it appeared in many cases to be more of a place one was sent to rot and die than recover and re-enter society.

According to Ference:

”Its first inhabitants were those unfortunate patients with communicable diseases such as smallpox, tuberculosis, scarlet fever and diphtheria, who were forcibly removed from the city’s teeming streets. Living conditions were primitive, a hotch-potch of pavilions, tents and cottages flung up around the central Riverside Hospital.”

Spooky: See Inside An Abandoned Island Leper Colony Next to NYC

Ference also described harsh living conditions on the island:

“When bad weather stopped ferries from running there were food shortages and in winter, frequently little heat. Incarceration on North Brother was often a death sentence. Those who did return from its shores spoke of a hellish environment like ‘the black hole of Calcutta.”

Unlike modern New York, with ubiquitous cellular phones, internet, and even live video chat, back in the heyday of North Brother, those sent to the island were completely cut off from the rest of the world. Many patients were never seen or heard from by their families ever again.

Today, only a handful of ornithologists are allowed to visit the island to document its colony of black-crowned night herons. City patrol officers keep watch on the island, though some intrepid bloggers have described their illegal trips to this abandoned place for those society had forgotten.

There are even more of these stunning, yet haunting, Ian Ference photos here, and additional historical descriptions of the island, courtesy of The Daily Mail.

Scared? I fear no man, no weapon system, nothing, but God in Heaven. I will say this loudly and for all to see and hear, TAKE MY LIFE, for at that moment I will be free of the hell on earth, the chains of bondage from Satan himself. I laugh in the face of Satan, for he cannot touch my soul, because I believe in Jesus our Christ ALMIGHTY! I have been saved in Him, and I REPENT of ALL MY SINS for all to see, and I turn my back on my wicked past and evil ways. One day at a time I get better and better at it. I will no longer cast judgement over my fellow sinner, or call names at people. Do as you please and you will get what you wish for. I will be judged by no man, by no serpant, but ONLY by God himself. If he so chooses to throw me in the pit, so be it, but I will stand before Him.

When Jesus our Christ RETURNS with His sword of life and death, I HOPE to stand next to Him to fight the good battle over evil —– AMEN.
Come get me communists, fascists, athiests, islamists, greedy, vile, corrupt, wicked, fornicators – I am here for the taking! I will meet you on the battlefield of life and death and those are my words of IRON. My name is Sgt. Unix Crust – come battle with me on COD MW3 and feel my sting!

The armed guards are the Corrections Officers of NYC and they patrol the waters around Rikers Island, North Brother Island and Hart Island. They take care of Hart Island as that’s where John and Jane Does from NYC are buried by inmates from Rikers. Most of the dead from North Brother were buried there also. They cruise the East River 24/7 in fast boats as I can attest to. My friend and I were fishing between City Island and Hart Isl. when we got too close to Hart Isl. and a patrol boat was on us like they dropped from the sky. Shotguns at the ready, they told us to move NOW! Hart Isl. is a few hundred yards east of City Isl. and North Brother is northwest of Rikers even less. Go to Google Earth for an up close view of the cemetaries on Hart Island. Whole Lotta Graves!

It’s called “The Internet”. If you had taken the 30 seconds or so to do a little research you would have found numerous articles written about this place. And every one of those articles would have informed you of it’s “OFF LIMITS” status. This place is surrounded with razor wire fences and can only be accessed by a gate that is patrolled by armed security.
But I’ll take that bet if you want to give it a try. I‘ll bet you you don’t even make it across the east river alive. (and that’s just because of the current) Hell, I‘ll bet you don’t even make it to NYC!! (*Hint* We eat folks like you at every tailgate party before a Giants game.)

If we follow Problemsolver’s posts on our 1913 and 1933 bankruptcies, and the UN/IMF/Fed owns all of us and our land – NONE of US has ANY rights. Even if this beautiful country is not ‘technically ours’ what gives the Tea Party, OWS or us, ANY rights whatsoever? So we all lose every argument right off the bat.
It will be just a matter of time before TRUE RED BLOODED AMERICANS decide to stand up to what has been perpetrated upon us, without our knowledge. It will be carnage times ten, so all of this infighting won’t make much difference will it, when America is totally destroyed.
It makes me sick to my stomach to see us all fight here on the Blaze, or anywhere, don’t ya’ll get it yet, the elite want us to eat each other, then they have total control…this is amazing to watch.
From other posts, I think the idea of educating America would be the best thing that could happen. How do we do it? We do it with love, understanding, intelligence, and strength in numbers.
WE THE PEOPLE can turn this ship around, and we don‘t need this so called ’father figure’ in the WH to do it. Let’s come up with a plan to re-educate these lost souls out there, to re-educate ourselves to what our forefathers paid so dearly to give us.

I want to thank each and every one of you for being you, whether you are left, center or right, for you see we are ALL AMERICANS in the end. I just wish everyone could embrace the freedoms and rights we have, or ‘technically don’t have’, and come together to FIX the free market system, to obliterate the Oligarchy, and restore true Capitalism and the entrepreneurial spirit that once thrived here, we’d ALL be BETTER OFF, and we would have JOBS! Is that not the source of our worries – JOBS! If there were jobs out there, and people still were freeloading, then they would be banished to an island in the Pacific for all I care. This collectivism is KILLING AMERICA…WE must STOP it now!

There were much larger hospital facilities on Roosevelt Island in the East River. The one at the north end was razed for a housing development with only the shell of the octagonal administration building being preserved and integrated into the complex. At the southern tip of the island, nearly opposite the UN building, are the remains of a large, stone victorian gothic hospital building which may in the process of preservation. At least the brush has been cleared away from it. I haven’t been there, Wikipedia and Google Earth are all you need.

This comes as a 4th generation Italian/German who‘s paternal grandfather was a WWII vet in between being among the first structural ironworkers in the boom times of NYC starting in the 1920’s, as the only people they could get to build the steel tower frames were Italians and Indians who they thought were 3/4′s nuts, and the very last project he worked on before starting a business of his own was slinging iron on the Empire State until it‘s completion in ’31.

His work and the others who raised those towers across NYC were descendents from the very immigrants that were housed on these ‘misfit -leper colonies and islands’, even inner city ghetto‘s like Hell’s Kitchen still today, and that’s why the new immigrant whining of mostly illegal immigrants today sickens me, and I’ll fight until I DIE or until they stop stealing our nation from under our feet with PC and BS. http://bit.ly/wVDRiL

Make all the government benevolence programs unconstitutional and shut them down. Pass the Fair Tax Act H.R. 25 {or S13}. My grandad come from Czechoslovakia about the turn of the century. He was a stone mason who help construct several pretty nice church’s in the Chicago area.
After he settled in the Lyons Illinois community he found that the job he had been accepted for had been taken that very same day. Figuring he had to feed the family and without the slightest thought of applying for the welfare of the time he started his own company. HE was the company and he contracted his labor at first before he had saved enough to purchase a little of his own equipment and hire help. Long story short Barry Odumbo would hate the guy. He retired a millionaire after WWII (where he lost a son in Europe) and lived a long life in Illinois and later California.
His wife, my granma, was something like 4 foot 9 and one day grandad came home highly steamed about something having to do with the business. When grandad was angry it was best to get out of his way. He was 6 foot 7 and his vocabulary sometimes reverted back to his european roots when he roared his displeasure. He began to shout and granma, bless her heart stood in front of the man and shouted right back, “Frank, you are in America now. We are Americans. We speak English in this house”. Grandad wilted with his only comment being “Yes Anna”.. Great memories of the time America was great. (pre-Obama).

    Of course quarantine houses existed….
How else does one prevent the spread of highly infectious diseases
for which no treatment – pharmaceutical, surgical, etc. may have existed.

Today, we do the same thing….only its costs a gillion dollars more.
We quarantine one patient in an incredibly expensive hospital room,
with limited access and special nurses, attire, food, and garbage collection.

So tell me, if someone releases a smallpox vial,

Those who sacrifice liberty for temporary security deserve and receive neither.

Pretty much all cities are “Black cities”, because they are enslaved in a culture of welfare and entitlement, and cities are the only place people like that can survive. It’s not being black that does this to them, it‘s because they’re being TOLD that being black does this to them. Self-fulfilling prophecy.

Ference‘s photo’s are great! Still, its a place where we hid the sick and weak..Many across the USA still exist.I hope he takes pictures of all of them.It would be a long, sad undertaking, but that’s the way it was.
No reason to deny the past.

Very sad to read and see how we once treated the sick in our country….. many around the world are still treated this way, or worse. Obama care will not help our current system prevent many bad systems from returning.

When it comes to deadly diseases, without any hope for a cure and if the diseased would not cease to spread the disease via their *cough* behavior, I could see a place like this being useful.

It would be better to just put them out of their misery, than to just let them rot. Makes you wonder what they are hiding, protecting this place with armed guards, even though no more patients are there….Maybe there are secrets or maybe they do testing on people there.

How do we know that this old place was NOT a decent and humane place to house diseased people? I think this is a mistake on the part of the blaze. Confining diseased humans is not bad…it’s common sense and I wish we had more of that now…as long as it is humane and decent to the afflicted.

That said, I truly believe in quarantining anyone that will not stop behaving in a manner that spreads disease. Again, as long as the quarantine is humane.

I sailed right past this Island which is just SW of Hells Gate. The East River does a sharp right tun then a quick left turn and when the tide is at full force 5-6 Knots, a whirlpool forms . It is really something to see. My sailboat did 12 knots going with the tide. This island is worth millions.

    Wow.Terrific pictures.I have only 1 question.Its 2012.A sight of horror.Why keep it?Liberals need reminders of their atrocities?

Gettysburg,Virginia was just as horrific. With many more casualties and with honor.Saving the USA.Every inch of this sacred ground needs to be preserved.

Call in the Ghost Hunters, or better yet hand it over to the occupliers and save them the 20 years they’d need otherwise to destroy a village.
