Sports Alert: Tim Tebow Traded to Jets But Transaction Faces Possible Snag; Saints Coach Suspended for a Year

Tebow traded to the Jets; Saints cocah Sean Payton suspended

Former Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow. (AP)

If you woke up on Wednesday think it would be a quiet day in sports as the country prepares for the NCAA tournament to resume on Thursday, you were wrong. Today, Tim Tebow was traded from the Denver Broncos to the New York Jets, and New Orleans Saints Coach Sean Payton has been suspended for a year.

Here’s what ESPN is reporting on the Tebow trade:

Unusually quiet in recent weeks, the New York Jets shattered the calm Wednesday by completing a trade for polarizing quarterback Tim Tebow, the team confirmed.

The Jets will send a fourth-round pick to the Denver Broncos, a source said.

Tebow, a former first-round pick, went on the trading block Monday when the Broncos secured free agent Peyton Manning, who signed a five-year, $96 million contract.

Several teams expressed interest, including Tebow’s hometown Jacksonville Jaguars, but the Jets — perceived as a sleeper at the outset — pulled off the splashiest trade of the offseason.

As for Payton, the NFL has suspended him for the entire 2012 season, and former Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams is banned from the league indefinitely because of the team’s bounty program that targeted opposing players.

Commissioner Roger Goodell will review Williams’ status after the upcoming season and consider whether he can return to the league.

Also Wednesday, Goodell suspended Saints general manager Mickey Loomis for the first eight regular-season games of 2012, and assistant coach Joe Vitt has to sit out the first six games.

In addition, the Saints are being fined $500,000 and forfeit second-round draft picks this year and in 2013.

It truly is March Madness.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

UPDATE 4:46 p.m.

ESPN is reporting that the Tebow trade may not be final just yet as the teams have encountered a hang-up in language in Tebow’s contract that could nullify the trade:

“In Tebow’s contract is a $6.2 million salary advance, of which $1.2 million already has been paid by Denver, sources told Schefter. The difference of $5 million is still advanced against his future salary, and that burden would shift to the Jets in a trade. The Jets, sources said, believe the Broncos should owe Tebow that money.

The trade, then, will not be finalized until the sides resolve their differences over which should pay the money coming to Tebow.”

The trade has already received a significant amount of backlash from fans and commentators in New York. ESPN NY 1050′s Stephen A. Smith said that the Jets decision to acquire backup quarterback Tim Tebow was “an unmitigated disaster.”

The Saints did nothing other teams do not do. They all have incentives for great hard tackles. The Saints just had a snitch and they were giving money and doing it out in the open. This is an attack on New Orleans and the punishment was way out of proportion to the crime. How many people did New Orleans tacklers destroy? None! the name of the defensive game is to hit the opponent hard. New Orleans players were not advised to do anything illegal…just to tackle hard and if the hurt an opponent…even better…as long as the tackle was legal. Who cares….I do not watch football that much anymore anyway.

As a huge NFL fan, I care. Actually, Mannings injury could have been the result of the saints hunting to hurt people. Either way, what they did was wrong.

The Saints have been a low class ball club since they became the nations darlings following hurricane Katrina. I never bought the poor dejected comeback story. That team did not suffer due to the hurricane. They had everything they needed to prepare for the season. The majority of home fans that turned out for their games were buying food with food stamps living in government housing but found the money to purchase tickets to professional football games along with all the other expenses that come along with that luxury. JOKEs on us tax payers as usual.

Wow…I paid my kids $5 if they sacked the QB or made an interception…it’s called incentive!

That’s not the same thing. Telling your players if you sack the QB fast as you can or play better and you’ll get some mo money is NOT the same as telling your players to hurt (possibly seriously) other players. Sports is not about hurting others on purpose, or making them get serious injuries.

I think that Tebow will be traded for the remaining years of eligibility. In New York, they will crucify him for his belief. I wouldn’t be surprised if they actually tried to crucify him. The hatred for Christians in this liberal bastion is palpable. The anti-religious verve is rampant and is worse in a place with millions of liberal zombies. I’m sorry for Tim Tebow.

I believe that the league actually intervened and pressured Payton to sign with the Broncos….Now he gets traded to the Jets for a 4th round pick?Jacksonville was the obvious choice but magic may have struck as Tebow and MJD would have been a great combo and that was not going to be allowed to happen….You know Jacksonville would have offered more and he really wanted to play there but they trade him to the jets for a 4th round pick….As if thats all he’s worth…Its really a disgrace the way Elway has treated TIm especially after all he did for the team last year.

Football is a business and if they took a 4th round pick for Tebow you can bet that is the best offer made for him. Denver handled this exactly like you would expect. Sign Peyton and move Tebow for as much as you can get. Jacksonville either did not want him or made an offer even lower than that accepted.
He will likely be the very short yardage QB in NY to avoid Sanchez from getting hurt and he will explore the possibility of becoming a fullback.

Woe, watch out: Idolatry alert. Tim Tebow was traded, and I can‘t tell you enough how much I don’t care. Which is probably why I know this thing:
Apparently the Pope won’t see the dissidents in Cuba during his visit to Cuba. Now all of you are probably confused, but not me. Here’s why:
Well maybe it’s because the Pope figured out that people who reject government are actually doing the work of Satan, because the rejection of government is what Satan is all about. Doesn’t it seem kind of obvious, there was Lucifer, and then who rejected the Catholic Church? Luther. It’s not just coincidence. Because look what happened with the Soviet Union, the Iron Curtain came down, and it pacified America, and now look at America.
I can be whatever the people in-charge want me to be in the earth, because I can always go to my mental mountains. But people’s skin and bones are stuck in the mud, and the spirit is like water, and eventually the spirit of the people in-charge will be replaced by a more freedom loving people.

Why even with foot-ball people reject one team which results in the formation of another team, and people reject that team which results in the creation of another team, etc, etc until there are so many teams and idolatry that people have lost track of Heaven and the things that are important. So most of you just keep playing the devil’s tune.
