St. Louis Mayor’s Website Allegedly Hacked by Anonymous Over Occupy Opposition

Occupy St. Louis protesters said they have felt threatened by St. Louis’s local government and apparently Anonymous took notice, hacking into Mayor Francis Slay’s website and released a list of his political supporters and contacts, as reported by The Gateway Pundit.

But it seems that some of protesters don’t think this hack was really worth their cause.

According to the Occupy St. Louis forum, which posted that Anonymous had infiltrated the website, Anonymous writes:

YOU DID NOT TAKE HEED TO OUR WARNING… WE WILL NOW LEAK INFORMATION…

YOU CAN REMOVE US FROM KEINER PLAZA, BUT NOT FROM YOUR SYSTEMS!

[...]

EXPECT US!!!!

THE BEGINNING IS NEAR!!!!

Anonymous Releases St. Louis Mayor Supporter List | Protesters Think Hack Not Worth It

The same Occupy St. Louis forum records mixed feelings regarding the attack from protesters. One commenter under the alias “Sallas” wrote “I don’t think this helped our cause one bit.“ Another with the username ”FuzzyButtons” wrote:

The sql dump really does hurt your cause. And for what, the equivalent of an e-mail list and a couple of blog posts? Scary.

And I don’t mean the information you posted is scary. I mean the fact that you think meaningless vandalism is more likely to bring change than reasoned argument or debate – that’s the thing that scares me.

Yesterday, Slay’s Chief of Staff, Jeff Rainford, meet with Occupy St. Louis protesters in an effort to compromise on removing them completely from Kiener Plaza. It was decided that a curfew would be put in place. According to the Fox2Now report, Rainford stated that the local authorities had turned a blind eye to many laws the protesters had been violating:

“I believe you got a different reception in the city of St. Louis than you would have gotten in Ballwin, Chesterfield, or St. Charles,” he told the forty or so protestors present.  “And yet some of you think we’re bad guys.  Well maybe you ought to test it out and see what reaction you would get in Ballwin, Chesterfield or St. Charles.”

About 40 Occupy St. Louis protesters showed up to the meeting to discuss the logistics of their protesting, but many refused to speak. (Photo: CBS Local)

During the meeting one protester accused Rainford of threatening the group, according to the local CBS channel, to which Rainford responded:

“I don’t know where you read in the newspaper, or what newspaper or tv station said that I was threatening violence.  I wasn’t.  It’s very easy.  I condemn the violence in Oakland.  I condemn violence here.  I condemn violence everywhere.”

But Rainford made it clear that the curfew at Kiener Plaza will be enforced “sooner than later” with those living there in tents getting “24 hours advance
notice.”

I do not appreciate Mayor Slay trying to solve his problem by sending this communist movement to the city of Chesterfield!

This is what democracy looks like? I’m going to start living like Kosinski (SP?) – without the bombing stuff. Oh yeah I’ll need a fast internet connection to watch GB TV too. and I can’t forget my microwave…or my MAC…or my IPHONE. Got to have my refrigerator. …

How in the world the city administrator didn’t die laughing at the “costumes” they were waring is beyond me. Like talking to a bunch of clowns. I know we should not underestimate these folks but come on. Taping money over you mouth? That‘s something my 9 year wouldn’t even do.

These people in this picture look like fools and idiots. We need to reinstate the draft and have every male and female serve two years in America or get out of the country and go to some third-world country where they might be content. These people have no self-respect, no self-discipline, no idea of what life is about. They are too smart for their britches; as they used to say.

Its time for businesses and the people to take their town back– if the authorities won’t follow the rules on the book, than the people should– shout discrimination, get on the news, jam the phone lines at the offices- but get these people out– they have stated their purpose- nobody else is allowed to remain that long, start filing charges of loitering, harassement, vandalism, call 911 for every incident that you experience, force the town to get rid of them- they can protest in peace but they have been given the time to do that– this was a warning by the extreme left about an October Surprise- also by Van Jones– Its time for us to start screaming and challenging them

No… most of them are rather anti-social and D&D is a social game. Most of them time it would be World of Warcraft or the new Star Wars Old Republic game that they play on line so they can be complete jack@$$3$$ on line and no one will know who they really are.

You don’t just “hack” into these system. There are obviously people involved from the inside.

The powers that be are desperate and know they will be voted into oblivion next year (if there is an election), so they engineered this “movement” knowing that it would snowball. These tools are being used to subvert our electoral process.

@Pouncing Porcupine Hi you must be new to the internet and not know the systems Anonymous has hacked. Hacking a STL Mayors site was a half hour job for them.

      @Quag,

Yes, I’m new to the internet in the last 15 years.

Who are the “them” you speak of hacking into a secure site? Wait! I’ll answer that for you: You have no clue who they are, and you probably have no clue how to hack into a secure site. I’ll say again, and with a high degree of confidence, that this was an inside job, or at least assisted by some disgruntled City employee who doesn’t like his boss.

@pouncing-porcupine. Not saying this is or is not an inside job but hacking Apache 2.2 is not a difficult task. Do a quick search and you’ll find more than 25 well know exploits just for that one app. Information Security is an expensive proposition. Small IT departments like the one for the City of STL just can’t keep up with securing all their web pages.

You probably know this and are just being a little *****…:-)

In the long run this movement will cannibalize itself.

Make no mistake: I’m not dismissing these people. They‘ve very dangerous and I do believe they’ll get violent.

That said, I can‘t see this movement going very far if they’re turning on themselves while they’re still talking about violence and not actually committing it yet.

Personally, I think this is one Useful Idiot waking up to what (s)he’s gotten in bed with. I think there will be more but the majority will end up so deep in it that they won’t be able to get out without (as Glenn so eliquently puts it) with a BULLET IN THE HEAD!

Our Mayor and his COS are an embarrassment to this city. Remove these idiots and enforce the laws on the books. The curfew is not new. It has always been in place. Why give these wastes of DNA an audience. The Tea Party had to jump through hoops, for us to gather in Keiner Plaza.
