St. Valentine’s Day (Candy) Massacre: School Bans Candy, Pushes Origami Instead

In a move that will probably get support from the First Lady, but boos from kids and candy companies, a school in Massachusetts has banned candy exchanges on Valentines Day.
The Horace Mann School in Newton has told parents that kids cannot not bring Valentines Day candy to school. Instead, the school suggests that kids exchange things like nice cards, or gifts like “stickers, pencils, erasers, stamps, or crafts like origami.”
One mom was fully supporting the ban. She told MyFoxBoston that last Valentines Day was a difficult one for her:
Last year was hell. The second grader and kindergartener came back with bags full of candy, cake, lolipops, and garbage. They had eaten half of it already at school. The other half they fought over or ate the rest. I tried to take it away from them – they screamed. I was like never again, this is not right.
MyFoxBoston did two separate reports on the story. One that sort of supported it and another that poked a little fun at it. Here’s the positive side of the candy ban:
Later in the broadcast, even the news reporters could not contain themselves when talking about it:
Where do you stand on the topic of banning Valentines Day candy in schools?

Posted on February 1, 2012 at 4:13pmHeard on the radio on my lunch break some researchers in San Fransisco say sugar is “as harmful as alcohol and illegal drugs” that there needs to be more stringent regulations, maybe even an AGE REQUIRMENT FOR PURCHASING “EXCESSIVE” SUGAR PRODUCTS. What the heck is happening to us? Funny thing… the Simpson’s did an episode about this exac thing. An over protective mother wanting to run everyone else’s life. I guess we already have that tho…

Posted on February 1, 2012 at 11:14amSchools should not be promoting anything except educationa. Valentines day is BS concoction that has no educational value, nor does halloween, easter bunnies etc in school. Keep birthday cakes, cupcakes, all these feel good things out of the school. We need to move away from these infantile things which have created such an infantile society. No pajama day at school either, no cross dressing day (which happened once and only once at my kids middle school). No green day (St Pats), No earth day! No Turkey day! Get rid of all this crap and teach kids about the country, its history, its many achievements etc.

Way overboard man. Kids should be allowed to have some fun at school. Heck Turkey Day is part of this Country’s history, so is St. Patty’s Day for that matter–any idea how many people in this country owe their existence at least in part to the Irish? The oldest St. Pat’s parade in the world is not in Ireland, it’s in New York City. Of course I can agree with you on the cross dressing day; never heard of one of those.

I tell you what folks, keep all your kids home from school that day and let the schools teachers and administration sit there all alone, wondering where the heck their students are. Oh, its a boycott against the school because you took the fun out of Valentines day, yeah keep them home and give them some ooey gooey Valentine’s candy to eat all day long. Stupid asinine people, who the hell do they think they are. Little Hitler’s thats what..God help us!

We have no problems teaching homosexuality, contraception at any early age. Let kids be kids and enjoy candy on Valentines day. It will not belong before these small kids will be introduced to drugs and condoms. This all makes me SICK!!

It is the sound of all the fun of being a kid being sucked out of life by progressives who demand that a person’s life be socially relevant, politically correct and devoted to social justice. Nothing more dangerous than a morally righteous liberal who wants to control your life.

Posted on February 1, 2012 at 12:43pmIt is important, Chiefgeorge, to remove all Western Cultural references as you are actively advocating on this thread. They’re already essentially destroyed our cannonical history and literature, why not go for the vestigal holidays next, again, as you’ve suggested several times? Is this part of the vaunted “New World Order” that you’ve gushed about on other threads I wonder?
After that, we can move to change the language to Chinese or Arabic and be done with it. Those are the fruits of the pragmatism you wish to engage against the rest of us. Welcome to your garden.

Posted on February 1, 2012 at 10:09amI only read the statement by the parent (I think) about how the kids had eaten half of the candy and screamed when they tried to take it away from them. I’ve got news for you, PARENT, you shouldn’t give a flying crap about whether the kid complains or screams when you take stuff away from them. THAT’S YOUR JOB!!!! If they get something inappropriate your job is to set restrictions and boundaries on them so they learn how to handle temptation and healthy eating habits. Take a tip from Catholic School, when you just take everything away from them and don’t teach them how to handle it when they have it, DOOFUS, they’re going to go crazy when they finally get the freedom of adulthood. Halloween comes around every year and my kids are allowed to eat some that night and then get rationed after that as I see fit. But then again, I‘m not afraid to parent my children and I’m not afraid to be the bad guy either. AGAIN, MY JOB!!! Another case of lazy parents taking away the enjoyment of childhood from their kids so they don’t have to experience the unpleasentness of kids not liking them for a moment and in turn stealing the opportunity for life lessons that will benefit them in the long run. Also, pushing their spoiled deprived kids off onto society at large when they grow up not knowing how to life in the real world when they become adults. FABULOUS!!!!!!!!!
Report Post »Lil Ole Me
Posted on February 1, 2012 at 10:24amI agree completely. For my kids, Halloween candy lasts until Christmas. Just because you have something, doesn’t mean you have to use it all at once. It;s kind of like the same way I teach them not to spend money all at once, also. You can find teaching moments for your children in almost anything if you just recognize them.

Posted on February 1, 2012 at 10:26amI could not agree with you more. As a parent it is my job to parent. There is candy in the world, this is just the first of many things your kids need to adjust to, like alcohol, drugs, cigarettes and pasta ! I hope to have taught my kids moderation is the KEY to living. The idea to deprive your children of candy is just plain stupid. I do the same on holidays, We control the amount. It opens the door to the topic of healthy eating. My kids love sweets just like any kid, but they have been brought up in a home where there are special occasions where the rules are bent slightly, like Valentines Day, Halloween & Easter….by the way, my children attend private Catholic school..that reminds me, I have about 120 Heart shaped cut out cookies to bake and decorate with icing made with real white sugar…..they are wonderful and the kids at our school will love this treat !
Report Post »ChiefGeorge
Posted on February 1, 2012 at 11:22amYou let them get halloween candy too? We need to sterilize this crap from our system once and for all. Yank Valentines Day at school, Halloween too, no educational value, if society still begs that your kids do this on their time then so be it. This stuff is all a scam for the corporations anyways who teach your kids when their young that this is what your supposed to do on the appointed day, you must go out and buy their stuff to celebrate it, waste of money and time. Keeps us an infantile society in the final analysis! The same ones who bitch about why this country is screwed up will not look in the mirror at the very things we allow to creep into our lives and be told by the society these are the things you should do and if you don’t your somehow a screwed up knot head. Its ridiculous.

Posted on February 1, 2012 at 10:08amI thank God that my children are grown and out of the public school system. I had to fight all the time in the late 80‘s and thru the 90’s because of the PC stupidity in the schools. The principals and some of the teachers literally hated me.
Parents, either fight for your kids or get them out of the public schools.

Posted on February 1, 2012 at 10:05am“I tried to take it away from them – they screamed”
Prime example of poor parenting. Of course they screamed. That’s how they (kids) manipulate adults. Grow a spine and tell them “NO”. If they continue to throw a tantrum you provide them with the opportunity to stand in the corner and think about their behavior. Better yet, the ‘old school’ method of holding books always worked well in our house. Act up, expect to hold a stack of books in each outstretched arm until you realize the error of your behavior. Why should my kids be denied the occasional fun of candy at school parties because you’re too lazy to discipline your own kids?
