Stage Collapse at Indiana State Fair Kills at Least Four

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Four people were killed and a dozen injured after a stage collapsed during a storm Saturday night at the Indiana State Fair, where the country group Sugarland was set to perform, the Indianapolis Star and WTHR reported.

Strong winds caused the stage rigging for the outdoor concert to collapse at the fairgrounds in Indianapolis. Fans were trapped and injured in the incident shortly before 9 p.m. It happened before the band had taken the stage.

Details on the conditions of those injured were not immediately known. Indiana State Police told The Associated Press they were still working to gather information and did not have anything to release yet.

Emergency crews were called to the scene. Workers were setting up a command center to tend to those who were injured.

Thousands of concert-goers were being evacuated to a nearby building because of high winds when the rigging for the stage fell onto the track where some were seated.

“It was like it was in slow motion,” concert-goer Amy Weathers told the Indianapolis Star. “You couldn’t believe it was actually happening.”

Those who were injured were being moved to a tunnel below the stage, the Star reported. A hole was being dug to try to reach those trapped beneath the rigging.

Associated Press photographer Darron Cummings was in the audience attending the concert as a fan shortly before the collapse. He said an announcer gave the crowd instructions on how to evacuate if the weather worsened, but said they hoped to get Sugarland on stage soon.

Cummings said he and his friends went ahead and sought shelter in a nearby barn after seeing the weather radar.

“Then we heard screams. We heard people just come running,” Cummings told the AP.

Witnesses told WTHR that some of the injured were in a VIP section in front of the stage known as the “Sugar Pit.” The witnesses said a wall of dirt, dust, rain and wind came up the main thoroughfare of the fairgrounds just before the collapse.

“Panic kicked in when they seen the dust bowl coming in from the Midway,” concert-goer Darryl Cox told WTHR.

Another person at the concert, Emily Davis, told WTHR that there was lightning and the sky had gotten dark but it wasn’t raining when the wind suddenly toppled the rigging.

“It was horrible, people were running and going crazy,” she said.

    All these natural disasters that’ve been going on, I truly love ‘em. I can’t get enough of them. When nature’s going crazy and throwing things around, scaring people and destroying property, I’m a happy guy. For centuries now man has done everything he can to destroy, defile, and interfere with nature. Over population, clear-cutting forests, strip-mining mountains, poisoning the atmosphere, over-fishing the oceans, polluting the rivers and lakes, destroying wetlands and aquifers. So when nature strikes back and smacks man in the head and kicks him in the nuts, I enjoy that. I have absolutely no sympathy for human beings whatsoever. None.

Humans have been part of the Earths‘ landscape for a mere instant on it’s timeline.       I’m happy to tell you there is very little in this world that I believe in. Listening to you mouth breathers comment on political, social, and cultural issues. I’ve notice most of your comments reflects an underlying belief that somehow things were better once and that with just a little effort we could set them right again.       It’s really sad you have no compassion for other people. If you had been among the injured or killed in this tragedy, we would have had compassion for you. Even the ones directing anger at you now. It’s just impossible for most of us to understand such a cold hear t. There is an answer and it does not come from man but from God. He is the source of the love you need to find that compassion. The creation you hold above all else is His creation. It speaks of His very nature! His very existence! Therefore if the creation is good and perfect then God’s plan for man is good and perfect. Sure there maybe some issues but God is in control of everything therefore the issues will be corrected in His time. God has a plan for your life. To live your life and not discover what that plan is, is a shame. A waste of talent!       The power of prayer is spectaular. My thoughts and prayers go out to those affected by this unfortunate event. May the families of the victims find comfort in those around them. May everyone who’s responsible for the accident understand any errors in erecting such projects that are exposed to weather. May we all see how unexpectantly our time here can end.

      I‘m just jumping in here because there aren’t many reply boxes on this post. If this NOGOD guy is for real, he is a very dangerous dude suffering suicidal despair.     I have been to the Indiana State Fair twice this year. I live just 10 minutes northeast of the fairgrounds. This was a very tragic event and my thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the deceased and injured. This is also not a time to place blame, however the lawsuits will be forthcoming.

    I was home looking out of my back door at about the same time the stage collapsed. The weather was frightening and the warnings were out for severe thunderstorms. You have to wonder what kind of procedures the Fair officials have in place when the weather turns violent.

    I wasn’t there, but I have seen pictures and videos prior to the incident. I think the entire area surrounding the stage would have been evacuated at the first sign of lightning and gusty winds. Surely a weather forecast was known in advance of the concert. Surely a radar image would have indicated a strong, severe storm was in the area at the time of the collapse.

    I think the thought of having to cancel or delay a major money event like a Sugarland concert may have got in the way of using common sense. People, don’t ever put your life in danger over a concert or any other event. Trust your gut feelings and stay safe!

      They were asking people to evacuate when it occurred. The organizers/police/SF officials seemed to have acted responsibly. Life is messy & sad & tragic sometimes. Let’s not look for blame, just grace and comfort from the Great Healer. I’m proud of my Hoosier neighbors who sought to help those in trouble. Prayers for all involved.

      They knew a storm was due at 9:15. It struck at 9:00. The people were waiting for a concert to begin. Why didn’t they cancel the concert when they learned of the storm? Did they expect the concert to be over by 9:15?

      On July 3 I was at a concert & fireworks show at a ballpark near my house in Scottsdale. At the first sign of lightning in the area they moved everybody away from the stage and off the field. At the time we thought they were overeacting. Now, not so much.

    In Indiana we run to the stage to rescue the injured, at our State Fair. We don’t have roaming gangs of human sucklings beating people because of their color.

      Why limit your prayer to just me, if you really believe in the power of prayer, just pray to god and ask him to put an end to all adversity.

      Perhaps you should rely more on reason and less on “faith”.

      Did faith help the jews during the holocaust? Nay. Indeed faith is one of the reasons they walked in line like sheep to the slaughter.

    Sugarland was supposed to perform in Tuscaloosa Alabama when the tornadoes hit.The city cancelled because of the threat of bad weather but Sugarland demanded them to still be paid the $200,000.00 they were due.So, maybe this is a payback.They never came back for a makeup or did anything for their $200,000.00 payment nor did anything for tornado relief .God works in mysterious ways.

      If God worked in mysterious ways maybe only the members of Sugarland would be dead for exhorting $200K from a city in a crisis and not these 4 people. How much did Sugarland get from this event seeing that the stage collapsed before they got on stage and played?

      seriously, the stage hands, the truck drivers, the band members, the caterers,the security, etc ALL need to be paid……perhaps you would think differently if you didn’t get paid after showing up for work, and the boss just told you “never mind” …don’t need you today….

      I guess I wish a donation had been made but we don’t know the finances…besides, wouldn’t INSURANCE pay for it anyway…

      If I showed up for work and the building was blown over by a tornado I would not complain about missing that day’s wages. Especially if 4 coworkers died! Get a grip LucyLoo! These band members should have forfeited their day’s pay and donated to the dead and wounded peoples families. After all, they are making more in one day ($200,000) than I make in 5 years!

      Insurance doesn’t pay to bring dead people back. If you want someone‘s insurance to pay for something then let the band’s insurance pay for their one day’s missed work.Make that a few hours work… if that.

      I’m not implying he is killing people with these disasters, I don’t know why those things happen. But you are foolish to think God isn’t in control of EVERYTHING.

      God sometimes causes natural disasters as a judgment against sin. The book of Revelation describes many events which could definitely be described as natural disasters. Is every natural disaster a punishment from God? Absolutely not.
      In much the same way that God allows evil people to commit evil acts, God allows the earth to reflect the consequences sin has had on creation.”

      That‘s what I was think’n ,, it was union workers cutting coners ( again ) That tarp should NOT have been allowed to blow in the wind . To me it looks like it acted like a sail and pulled the stage over .

      I feel bad for the people killed or hurt but this wasn’t Sugarlands fault ,they don’t set up the stage .

      What’s happening is that we have a bunch of uneducated people just doing things without any engineering or scientific background. If it looks pretty then it’s OK. Just like the White House! The stages being built for concerts in windy areas is like the current Administration telling us they have things under control. They don’t… and people suffer. Things collapse without warning when people have already warned them about a collapse.
