Stampede Chaos as Thousands of Dallas Residents Apply for Housing Vouchers

A crush of thousands of Dallas residents caused some early morning chaos in a mad scramble to line up for a housing voucher waiting list Thursday.
At least eight minor injuries were reported in the rush to apply for the vouchers, which if approved, would pay a portion of the holder’s rent.
The Dallas Morning News has more:
When, at 6 a.m., officials said it was time to form a line, a frantic rush ensued — the latest sign of people’s desperation for help in tough times. There were no serious injuries, but video footage of the chaos received national attention.
“Once they said we could go on the property, it was a stampede, a circus,” said Adelia Frierson, a 24-year-old single mother applying for the federally funded assistance.
Zachary Thompson, the county’s director of health and human services, said the turnout once again demonstrates the need for the Housing Choice Vouchers, also known as Section 8. By the end of the day, about 5,000 households had applied. Applicants for the housing vouchers are not required to live in Dallas County.
Thursday marked the first time Dallas County had opened its waiting list since 2006. The county has about 3,800 vouchers at a given time and distributes them as they become available, which could take up to two years. They do not expire, but holders can become financially stable enough not to need them.
The Dallas Housing Authority and the city of Plano, Texas both saw similar responses when they opened their voucher application process last May for the first time in years: More than 21,000 applied with the DHA, mostly online, for 5,000 waiting list spots, and 8,000 applied for 100 available vouchers in Plano.

Then there are those who are 2nd and 3rd generation entitlement hand outs. Dont work, dont want to work will never work. They are the blood sucking parasites the progressives have created.

When I was young (long, long ago) my wife and I both needed help, but we couldn’t do anything for just a little portion and pay what we coudl for it. It was all or nothing and was going to include food stamps, WIC and the works. We turned it down, sucked it up and worked out of it. We viewed it as our obligation as adults.
I’m proud of you for doing it your way. God bless you and keep working, you will make it, keep the faith.

I laughed at her and told her, “No thanks, I will buy my own food and stuff for my kid”. She couldn’t do the math. She looked at me like I had two heads. Nice lady, but what a crock. WIC, please….

Posted on July 16, 2011 at 2:27pmA long long time ago, my mother was a single parent raising three kids on minimum wage. Welfare, food stamps, the works… She never stopped trying to better herself. Before I graduated high school she had worked her way off of all public assistance. She was also a life long democrat. If she were alive today I have no doubt that she would not only be appalled be the people receiving public assistance now, but she would be voting republican. Even though she was a democrat, she hated communism and socialism with a passion. She would have looked at obama, pelosi, reid, and others of their ilk as nothing more than something smelly to be scraped off of her shoe.

Report Post »This is the church’s job. If the needy went to their local church for the help then the local church would be able to see how they are living and HELP them get through. The govt. is too far away and has NO CLUE how our money is being spent and who is trying to better a bad situation and who is just being lazy.
If you don‘t work you don’t eat. That’s Bible. There is a huge difference between hand out and hand up and its painful obvious the govt. can’t see who is doing what.
