Starbucks CEO Calls for Bold Statement Against Obama, Congress

It’s no secret that the business community is frustrated with Washington. But now an unlikely source is leading a smart movement among business leaders to tell the President and Congress to rein in deficits. Bloomberg News reports on what trouble Starbucks’ CEO has brewing for Washington:
“Starbucks Corp. (SBUX) Chief Executive Officer Howard Schultz urged other CEOs to stop donating to U.S. political campaigns to encourage leaders to solve the nation’s growing budget deficit.
‘I am asking that all of us forego political contributions until the Congress and the President return to Washington and deliver a fiscally disciplined long-term debt and deficit plan to the American people,’ Schultz wrote in an e-mail sent to business leaders that was obtained by Bloomberg News.”
Schultz first voiced his frustrations with Washington in a letter to CEOs and other corporate executives on August 8:
“While very proud of the steps we continue to take as a company and the record results we turned in for the quarter, I found myself growing more and more frustrated at the lack of cooperation and irresponsibility among elected officials as they have put partisan agendas before the people’s agenda. This is not the leadership we have come to expect, nor deserve.”
Attacking politicians’ pockets to see results is not a bad idea. POLITICO writes on Schultz‘s call for American’s to go on strike against their failed and vacationing leadership:
“’The fundamental problem is that the lens through which Congress approaches issues is reelection. The lifeblood of their reelection campaigns is political contributions,’ Schultz said. Whether big donors or small ones, Americans should stop giving and see if it galvanizes Washington to act.
‘The debt crisis is really the symbol of a larger problem, which is that our leaders are not leading,” he added. ‘America’s leaders need to put their feet in the shoes of working Americans…. Instead, all they think about is their own political self-interest.’”
In 2000 Schultz donated $50,000 to the DNC, and since has donated thousands to Washington Sen. Maria Cantwell, President Barack Obama, then presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and John Edwards, among over a dozen other Democratic and a few Republican candidates.
This past March, Schultz criticized the President’s health-care reform overhaul. Schultz told the Seattle Times that he believed the bill was made with good intentions, but “under the current guidelines, the pressure on small businesses, because of the mandate, is too great.”

If corp America would wise up and pull the money out of DC it would be like night and day on how things go here. Lobbying must stop and a lot of it is for EPA or tax code favors, not that it helps much since many corps are still leaving the US. Posted on August 15, 2011 at 8:34pmWe’ve been saying for decades that campaign reforms are needed. Only the mega-wealthy can run for office, leaving out some highly qualified people. Our government has become very corrupt because of political campaigns. Instead of seeing which party/candidate can raise the most money, there needs to be a “cap” on the amount of money, air-time, etc. that each candidate is allowed to spend. There needs to be term limits. But getting it all past Congress is the problem. Until we have principled people in Congress who will pass amendments to the Constitution to rectify our political process of today, we’ll continue down the same path. America needs to get out of the same mind set of electing the same kind of candidates to go to Washington and then complaining about Washington.

Posted on August 15, 2011 at 6:30pmThere is no such thing as a “bipartisian” solution to the debt problem. Democrats want to spend more and raise taxes, end of story. They have no interest in cutting ANYTHING, with the possible exception of military spending. Any compromise in the name of bipartisanship will involve spending more, cutting less and raising taxes, since that’s what one of the two parties wants. All this complaining about “partisan politics” is nonsense. Partisan politics is EXACTLY what we need, with an uncompromising “party of no” standing up to Democrats accross the board. Stop letting progressives control the conversation by demonizing words such as “partisan” when that’s exactly what we need! Every time Obama complains about partisan politics getting in the way, it’s only Republicans trying to uphold their campaign promises that he considers partisan. His own party doing the exact same thing doesn’t get the label or the blame!

Also, your Savior pulled $500 billion out of Medicare and threw it into Obamacare to redistribute to the people who don’t want to pay a nickle of their own healthcare along with all the illegals who are here sucking our tax dollars daily. Yeah the GOP is to blame for all the world’s ills – I’m sick of the politics in DC too – but I at least have critical thinking skills to see thru the BS that come out on both sides. Posted on August 15, 2011 at 8:36pmIndeed – and they are also taking the hit with unemployment TWICE. Let’s not all forget that when the unemployed gets granted benefits, their former employer picks up the tab in nearly all cases. It’s also important to remember that companies such as Starbucks have many part-time employees such as students, etc…Given this in many states, if the person filing for unemployment is a student and their particular state deems this a valid reason for being “under-employed”, they can collect while working part time at places such as Starbucks. Hence, the company is not only paying their workers unemployment even though they are stilling working for them part-time, but they are also taking a hit at loss of sales from their unemployed customers as well.

Posted on August 15, 2011 at 11:02pmStarbucks is just a fad like the pet rock. The coffee sucks and costs 6 times more than Micky D’s. Jumping on the band wagon is expensive. Eat your peas like a good slave.

Posted on August 15, 2011 at 6:14pmI will start going to Starbucks and supporting other businesses that take a stand against the status quo government of spending and expanding the power and scope of government. Both dems. and Repubs. have grown the government over the past 50 years, its time all gov’t. (local, state and federal) are all shrunk, and their power reigned in! What “:Value Added” product does all this bureaucracy create??

Posted on August 15, 2011 at 6:29pmNo government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we’ll ever see on this earth!

Posted on August 15, 2011 at 10:39pmthey will disappear if we MAKE them disappear. no $ = no agency. we are the money, without us, they don’t exist. a man with no subjects is not a king. a person with no sheep is not a shepard. etc…
What are they going to do physically rob us? i say that we all NEED to stop paying taxes. if they want money for a program, issue bonds, those who agree will purchase the bonds. nothing is free. the handouts to washington need to stop now.
