Steelers Safety Troy Polamalu Stirs Controversy for Recommending Anti-Fracking Movie

Pittsburg Steeler Troy Polamalus December Movie of the Week Spurs Facebook DebateWhile the Pittsburgh Steelers may still be nursing wounds from Sunday‘s upset by the Denver Bronco’s, prominent Steelers safety Troy Polamalu is still stirring controversy for a film recommendation he made on Facebook back in December. The movie? “Gasland.”

Gasland is a 2010 documentary film by Josh Fox covering the environmental hazards of natural gas drilling using hydraulic fracturing, a method that involves drilling into rock and injecting a high-pressure liquid to create channels for natural gas in reservoirs below to be harvested. Gasland features environmental concerns over fracking taking place in the Marcellus Shale under parts of Pennsylvania, New York, Ohio and West Virginia, and also speaks with homeowners affected by fracking in Colorado, Wyoming, Utah and Texas.

The Environmental Protection Agency recently released regulations for fracking under the Safe Water Act and will be releasing a study of fracking’s effect on drinking water sometime in 2012 and also in 2014. Most recently, fracking has been blamed for causing a 4.0 magnitude earthquake in Youngstown, Ohio, on Dec. 31 and fingers have pointed to fracking as the cause of other earthquakes as well.

Here‘s Polamalu’s Facebook post, which, as the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette points out, started a lengthy comment debate:

Pittsburg Steeler Troy Polamalus December Movie of the Week Spurs Facebook Debate

Since Dec. 14, Polamalu’s post has garnered 560 likes, 104 shares and more than 150 comments. Most comments are praise and thanks for Polamalu raising awareness of this issue, but the post is also peppered with criticism for the movie and misinformation about fracturing. Here is a snippet of the Facebook comments:

The Post-Gazette states that the film creator also praised Polamalu for his post on the film:

Mr. Fox was still quick to seize the moment, tweeting back to Mr. Polamalu, “THANKS! Let‘s save PA’s water! Go Steelers!”

He also called the Steelers “#1 in Fracktivist Defense.”

The industry, meanwhile, was quick to contest the film’s accuracy without dissing its well-liked endorser. EnergyInDepth, a pro-industry lobbying firm, tweeted to Mr. Polamalu, saying it has “separated claims” from the facts in “Gasland” — and, by the way, congratulations on his Pro Bowl selection.

Polamalu doesn’t explicitly state his views on the movie or fracking, simply posting the trailer of Gasland without any comment of his own. Polamalu has also included films like “Waiting for Superman”, “Food Inc” and “Vanishing of the Bees” as part of his regularly appearing Movie of the Week feature, according to the Post-Gazette.

I live in western PA, where the Marcellus people have completely taken over. AND it is a crying shame. I truly believe that the fracking is killing our environment here. Are family are avid boaters on our local rivers. Every year the water is dirtier and there is less and less fish and water life. I don’t believe for one second this is natural. I have witnessed with my own eyes the tanker trucks dumping waste water into the river. I have even physically tried to block their path. In the past few weeks our local Dam put up a net while letting out some water to see if there is diminishing fish life, and in three weeks they has the net up they caught 3 fish. AND why is that? Because the waste water is killing the wildlife in the water. Many in my family, friends and myself have stopped drinking and cooking with the water altogether, we switched to bottled. And for the boating probably gonna sell it and buy a pool, I don’t feel safe letting my kids swim in it. There is no way to determine the long term effects of exposure to this contaminated water.
And not to mention the outsiders who moved here with the company. I can’t go a mile without seeing a plate from out west. So, if this creates jobs is it for the people of the area or just to bring all the mexicans that can’t even speak English to invade out state. I don‘t know one person employed by Marcellus it’s all outside people.
And finally not everyone has the same opinion. Why not listen to the other side? You just B

And so why is it that Oklahoma, Texas, and Kansas have had fracturing going on for decades and have not had any problems with the environment. The record of earthquakes in Oklahoma (see the seismograph in Meers, OK) have been going on before fracturing, during fracturing, and after fracturing… it doesn’t matter. The water table in Oklahoma, where the water table has always been good, is still good.

The only water table damage which has happened has been done by wildcat drillers back in the early days of oil production. Today, a surface pipe is set before ANY drilling can take place, which protects the entire range of the aquifer.

Just like the lies of Al Gore and Michael Moore in their movies, Gasland is filled with environmental subjectivism and hysterical, half truths. It works on the ignorant and feeble minded.

I was simply explaining my pov here in western pa. It’s my personal feeling and I never expected to be in the majority. I did expect a adult conversation and not picked apart and bashed.
And I know there has to be some drilling, but to what extent? Does it all need to be extracted immediately? Does the Earth need sucked dry? What will the effects be for say 100 years from now? I think there should be a healthy medium. Take what is needed and leave the rest for the future.

you speak of tanker trucks DUMPING into the waterways; this is not fracking. It may hydrolic residue from fracking that has been contracted to be transported elsewhere. This is a secondary issue, you can take it up with agencies within your state. Coherent addressing of the conditions you describe will have effect.

Here is an example: home owners everywhere contract to have garbage/trash picked up weekly. Are the home owners responsible if the garbage truck dumps it’s load in a stream in the countryside???

Your second post speaks to CONSERVATION and responsibility. The known reserves under the control of the USA (coal, gas, oil) are in the CENTURIES. The largest impediment to sound energy management is the government being manipulated by the extremists.

Is it reasonable to expect a nuclear power plant to withstand an earthquake of magnitude 10? That is what the extremists want; post Japan quake & tsunami.

The vast majority of energy companies want to do a good, responsible job at providing energy for all; yet because of this or that bad apple ALL are treated as criminals. It is time to treat these corporate citizens with the respect they deserve until they break these law.

Illegal dumping should be reported. If you photograph the dump along with the plate number, the Blaze will probably do a story on it. Madam, you represent yourself as an activist and you assume an unproven cause and effect – you should shoot photos and when they leave, take water samples. Nothing is more persuasive than a sincere woman on camera … with proof. You can stop the illegal dumping.

Your findings can be caused by a lot of other things, yet you “know” it is due to fracking just because they are in the area. If trucks are dumping stuff in the rivers, then report them. Wow! Now isnt that something? Two people living in the same area, but with two completely different stories.

I happen to be a degree’d scientist, living in the Pittsburgh area. The gas companies DO in fact dump water into the rivers — why? Because that particular water is cleared by the EPA/DEP to be dumped, why? Because it is clean.

But now, all of you fear mongering jealous people see them dumping, then “assume” they are polluting.

That is where the bad press comes from — no knowledge, uneducated people who dont’ have a horse in the race causing problems for those whose lives in this area have been changed, for the good, by the money that is being generated.

There is absolutely NO proof that Fracking causes water issues. The case recently in WYOMING was the first, and only statement made by the EPA — ONE WELL OUT OF TENS OF THOUSANDS of wells.

When Range Resources approached me, I VOLUNTEERED my land to host a well site! WHY? Because I know the truth!

Mmmmm…this glass of water that I am drinking tastes mighty fine, People! Just like it always had. My well is 200 feet deep. The fracking well is over a mile deep. Thats 5280 feet. Liquids follow the flow of gravity, not up.

I’m a Lead Environmental Inspector in the Marcellus Shale region and I must say that you are an idiot. We are very careful and heavily regulated. If you have witnessed someone dumping waste, you should report it immediately. I have had PADEP, County Soil Conservation Districts, and ACOE visit my sites and they seemed to be very pleased. As a matter of fact, we were threatened with jail time for having turbid water reach a creek (not even an HQ waterway). So, you can try to sell your version of the “wild west style business” eslewhere, we here aren’t buying it. As for the economic impact, we create jobs (for those that want them) and there are a whole bunch of PA guys working on my project. We spend money in your money grubbing state ($2200 a month for a ****** motel w/ no refrigerator, or $3000 per month for a single family home), we all eat out locally, we all have our trucks worked on locally, our wives shop locally, visit beauty salons, drink in your bars (we tip very well… I watch locals throw down $2 on a $30 meal). We buy fuel (which builds and maintains your roads), we pay for tickets from cops (who target us)…. So, you better remove your head from your rectum before we all pack up and leave your state to return to it’s pre-gas poverty stricken hell! I’ll leave you with this…. “Ain‘t nothin’ finer than a Pipeliner”

My experience in the few months that a Fracking Company has been on my property is nothing short of win – win. The tankers they use to bring in water to cool the rigs comes from a farmers man-made “lake”. Even though it’s on private land the water used for the cooling process is tested before they return the water to that lake source. One time they had the water flagged, but it wasn’t for pollutants. It was cleaner than the source water. They were asked to dial back their reclamation process to closer conform to the lakes natural pollutant levels.

I have 3 wells currently on my property that go 24/7. I also have 2 different water wells for ground water, and they are tested regularly by the Fracking Company and an independent monitor. The water is as sweet as ever.

Mostly it’s water, sand, and various natural gases. Things that are in the environment anyway. Beyond that, the fracking takes place well beneath the water levels where we get our drinking water from.

Polamalu’s favorite pastimes include surfing, growing flowers, making furniture and playing the piano. Despite Polamalu’s hard-hitting style on the gridiron, he is known off the field as a soft-spoken family man.

Polamalu is also well read in the history and theology of early Christianity, which ultimately led him and his wife Theodora to convert to Orthodox Christianity in 2007. He makes the Sign of the Cross after every play. Among his spiritual activities is a pilgrimage to Orthodox Christian sites in Greece and Turkey, taken in 2007. He seldom gives interviews, but when he does, he often speaks of the role his spirituality plays in his life. Polamalu has said that he tries to separate himself from his profession as much as possible, including not watching football games at home. He prays after each play and on the sidelines.

His children, Paisios, and Ephraim, are both named after well-known Greek Orthodox Christian saints.

Polamalu and his wife Theodora founded the Harry Panos Fund to honor Theodora’s grandfather, who served in World War II.

First, if he stuck to football, his team might have done better. I am sick of these people that think, because they have an audience, they have some expertise. I live in northeast Pennsylvania where the old coal economy is being replaced with this technology. Therefore, I have done a lot of reading and studying on how this effects the environment, as well as the economy. A funny thing is going on, with the exceptions of some Gorites (there are a few in every crowd), the overwhelming majority of the people here understand the safety of the industry and the importance to the local and national economy. Drill, baby, Drill.

hello, fracking is not the only culprit, companies for decades and even now are dumping chemicals into the water supply, even city’s are still allowing raw sewage to be dumped into the water supply, because they can not afford to fix the system, so you calling someone a moron is only showing you ignorance, before talking or calling someone names like the leftest do,how about a little more history reading, and a little more investigation work,

PS90 Did I call you any names? There is absolutely no proof that fragging causes pollution. Read up on it and stop listening to the Environmentalist who want wind turbines but not near them. They would rather see us living in caves but not them!

There are no studies that says fragging causes pollution of any kind. Remember the oil spill in the Gulf there is no sign of any oil left anythere near the site. You are nothing but Gore Nannies!

    Great move Troy!

I am a Pennsylvanian in the heart of gas country, passing Halliburton and Chesapeake Energy trucks on a daily basis. It’s been a boom to the economy no doubt and vital to our energy independence but some of the drillers are careless and are causing serious problems.

I saw the documentary and was very impressed. The criticism is not one of crazy environmental extremism – it’s about responsible, careful, extraction of this vital natural resource. I am pro-nuclear, pro-natural gas, and pro tar-sands development to get us off the teet of the Islamofacists in the Middle East.

What Halliburton, Chesapeake, and others are doing is unregulated, unmitigated, and reckless. To them, it’s all about profits and no responsibility. We in PA are receiving NOTHING for the gas they are extracting becuase Corbett is in the pockets of the gas industry. Corbett should follow the Alaska plan set forth by Sarah Palin by placing a small extraction tax on the companies she has raised billions of dollars for Alaskans, lowered their tax burden, and has not hurt the oil industry one bit.

Wake up Corbett and get with the program. Protect Pennsylvania and support Pennsylvanians.

I am afraid too many. They can’t get past the “D” in Democrat. Sad but true. What‘s really sad is they’ll vote “D” even if it hurts their pocket book – unless they get shocked with a cattle prod and finally wake up. That would be a huge miracle, the kind that only God can pull off.

He does have a right as well as a responsibility. Gather all the facts, then come up with your conclusion. Heck, I even sit through about ten minutes of racheal maddow just to see if there is an opposing view that makes sence…..then I feel like cutting my head of and change the channel.

Troy has a right? Has a right to be an idiot if he wants, just like every other liberal loon that walks the earth. They even have a right to go to Hell if they want, but I would strongly suggest they avoid that option, for that is both eternal and there is no way out. The better option: Choose Jesus, not only will your life on earth be substantially better, but eternity will be a real blast. Don’t believe it can be beaten.
