Stephen Colbert Explores Presidential Run…Sort Of

Move over Mitt, there’s a new game in town. Stephen Colbert announced on “The Colbert Report” that he is forming an exploratory committee to “lay the groundwork for my possible candidacy for president of the United States of America of South Carolina.”
Former Federal Election Commission chairman Trevor Potter acted as Colbert’s lawyer during his guest-appearance on the show. “You cannot be a candidate and run a super PAC,” Potter said. “That would be coordinating with yourself.”
So what will Colbert do if he can’t “coordinate with himself?” Well, ask fellow Comedy Central host Jon Stewart to head up his super PAC instead – that’s what.
“This is a difficult decision. I’ve talked it over with my money. I’ve talked it over with my spiritual adviser,” Colbert mocked.
He added the disclaimer:
Colbert’s super PAC is Americans for a Better Tomorrow, Tomorrow. His 501(c)4 is the Colbert Super PAC SHH [as in “shh”] Institute.
The comedic stunt was likely meant to highlight what Colbert considers the ridiculous nature of U.S. election law.

Report Post »allows unlimited, unaccountable money in politics. The next step looks like it’ll be statewide appeals, starting with MT. Good for Colbert and Stewart.

Posted on January 13, 2012 at 12:48pmColbert is talented but a smartass of the first order. He skewers some people who need it, I suppose, but his act just gets old after about 5 minutes.

Posted on January 13, 2012 at 12:23pmAnd the leading republican candidate has stood in front of America championing corporate person hood while a conservative Supreme Court set it all in motion. The radical, extreme right are the ones attempting to bring America to it’s knees and the example of useful idiots begins with the subscribers of conservatism. It would be amusing if it weren’t so scary how seriously you take yourselves.

Posted on January 13, 2012 at 5:14amAgreed…with the Mammalione that is. Colbert is a brilliantly keen mind who is currently exposing the destructive and corrupting influence money is having on our democracy. He’s pointing out how we are all being hoodwinked by the political establishment that as been bought and paid for (DNC and RNC) and making it plainly clear by “boiling the frog” as it were. We should all be well grateful.

Posted on January 13, 2012 at 5:16amYou completely (and perhaps unsurprisingly) miss the point. He’s exposing how corrupt the system is. A true patriot would see that.
Report Post »Arbroath7
Posted on January 13, 2012 at 1:50pm@sane_man: Colbert is anything BUT a true Patriot! He, Jon Stewart (not his real name, BTW … probably doesn’t even know where Scotland is) and others of that ilk are corrosive harpies singing their songs to draw in the unsuspecting to their doom. Steer clear of that bilge.

Posted on January 13, 2012 at 3:42pm@ARBROATH7 So utterly wrong you are. They are trying to save this country from uneducated, superstitious, fearful lemmings who believe everything they are told and are willing to be the slaves of a corporate owned, bought and paid for, political system. They tell the truth, through comedic terms.
