NEW YORK (AP) — The United Farm Workers union says Stephen Colbert will visit Capitol Hill on Friday to testify at a U.S. House committee hearing on farm workers who are illegal immigrants.
Colbert’s will appear as an expert witness. He has focused on the UFW’s “Take Our Jobs” campaign on his nightly show on Comedy Central, “The Colbert Report.” He had spent a day last month picking vegetables on a farm in upstate New York.
The UFW launched the “Take Our Jobs” campaign in June to invite U.S. citizens and legal residents to replace illegal immigrants who work on farms.
The hearing is before the House Judiciary Committee’s immigration subcommittee.

Posted on September 24, 2010 at 10:00amIn 1994, 59% of California voterss voted for Proposition 187. The law would have required law enforcement, hospitals and social services to verify legal status to receive services and to report illegals to the feds and deny welfare services, education and health care to illegals. It was shot down in the courts after the ACLU and friends sued, calling it anti-immigrant. A single federal judge struck down Prop 187. That should not happen and needs to change. Especially when federal judges are appionted for life. That should not happen and needs to change.
Currently welfare, education and health care services are freely handed out to illegals and in California, certain “assistant” type of Spanish/English speaking workers in these city, state and county positions have been hired to service illegals exclusively. That should not happen and needs to change.

Posted on September 24, 2010 at 9:36amPersonally, I’d see it like this. If Stephen Colbert was testifying in character, then maybe he sees how bogus these hearings are in the first place, and he’s doing it just to rub it in. Since they KNOW we wont take him seriously.
I don‘t think he’s so bad after all. He’s just an entertainer.

Posted on September 24, 2010 at 9:28amWe’ve got people in the country that CAN do farm work.
But we dole out benefits, which pay about just as well as farm work.
Why then, as a legal citizen, would you do any work?
If you want illegals to quit taking jobs, you need someone who IS going to do the work. My uncle used to have an orange grove, I’m talking around 60 years ago. He had to go get migrant workers, because his local labor force would rather get the check on the 1st and the 15th.

Posted on September 24, 2010 at 9:43amAmericans are not going to do this type of work. Let’s be real here. And if Americans would do this type of work, we’d be paying $10 for a tomato! Then everyone would be bitching about the cost of produce. I‘m for letting immigrants come here on work visa’s and take their money back home. No benefits for them, just their pay……………….

Posted on September 24, 2010 at 9:28amUsed to watch Stewart and Colbert every night, that was two years ago. Since Obama and Co. have reminded me how much libturds suck, I haven’t watched it since. That includes anything on Comedy Central. Caught a few minutes of Stewart on the O’Reilly factor and even had to turn that off. I agree with a recent commentator that referred to Stewart as a “sad clown”. Self hating loser is more like it. Typical libturd.

Posted on September 24, 2010 at 9:28amI’d say 100% of the time, him being a comedian and probably quite liberal. He even described himself as a Democrat.
And as the article said, he’s going to testify in character, which means in the persona he plays on TV.

Posted on September 24, 2010 at 8:53amThe only proof I’ve seen of him testifying “in character” has been from an anonomys Republican source. I’ll take that with a grain of salt thank you very much. In fact, his invoking of Ching-Chong Ding-Dong seems like his way of saying “of course I won’t be in character”.
That aside, both Stephen Colbert and Steve Colbert seem pretty passionate about this program, and instead of just dismissing it, he put his back where his mouth is and took part in the program. I haven’t heard of any real journolist doing this for a report.

Posted on September 24, 2010 at 9:27amSomeone needs to look into this because is it a bogus argument. As a former South Central California welfare worker with a husband who works at the county hospital, I can attest to the fact that illegals DO receive welfare benefits and a myriad of public assistance benefits. So, when one parent works in the fields, the other parent can claim no income, no other parent, no assets, etc. at the welfare department. That works out well for the illegals. They can collect full benefits while hiding their actual income and assets. When Americans needs welfare because of an absent parent, the District Attorney opens a child support case and goes after the parent outside the home aggresively, garnishing wages, intercepting income tax refunds, etc. The illegals get a free pass. How exactly is the District Attorney, the welfare department, the criminal justice system supposed to determine the income, assets, parental status, etc. of illegals. This must stop. The illegals have a supplement to the field work income, and a free pass that Americans don’t have when it comes to the welfare system and all other government systems. This is the crux of why Stephen Colbert’s argument along with those who believe in his message, is dishonest.

Posted on September 24, 2010 at 9:42amActually smug, slavery id the long term goal of the progressives. I have no issue with a person who refuses work they are capable of doing being unable to collect. If it’s a case where the pay would be too low to supprt their families, then maybe provude some assistance. But actually working feels good, and helps you avoid being a complete waste of carbon.
