Stephen Hawking: Heaven is a ‘Fairy Story’

Earlier this year, controversial pastor Rob Bell insinuated there was no physical place known as Hell. Now, prominent physicist Stephen Hawking says there is no Heaven, calling it a “fairy story.”

“I regard the brain as a computer which will stop working when its components fail,” he told Britain’s The Guardian in an exclusive interview. “There is no heaven or afterlife for broken down computers; that is a fairy story for people afraid of the dark.”

The Guardian details more of the interview:

In the interview, Hawking rejected the notion of life beyond death and emphasised the need to fulfil our potential on Earth by making good use of our lives. In answer to a question on how we should live, he said, simply: “We should seek the greatest value of our action.”

In answering another, he wrote of the beauty of science, such as the exquisite double helix of DNA in biology, or the fundamental equations of physics.

Hawking responded to questions posed by the Guardian and a reader in advance of a lecture tomorrow at the Google Zeitgeist meeting in London, in which he will address the question: “Why are we here?”

In the talk, he will argue that tiny quantum fluctuations in the very early universe became the seeds from which galaxies, stars, and ultimately human life emerged. “Science predicts that many different kinds of universe will be spontaneously created out of nothing. It is a matter of chance which we are in,” he said.

so i guess that computer of a brain of his was just put there by a space monkey, or the air he breaths and the food he eats was just pooped out of a stars butt. okay to each his own, i know he his paralyzed, but to believe this is only going to make it worse for him after life on earth stops,
he and “”‘liberal-atheist-critical-thinker”"” must be brothers in some kind of space religion,to believe things this out there.

It is arrogance. His own numbers cannot explain everything in the universe, and he yet confidently proclaims there is no heaven.

In some ways it is also sad.

It’s even worse arrogance to claim to have the true god, which all the religions do.

Heck, all those “holy books” are utterly arrogant, since they all claim to know what god wants humans to do. Outrageous.

Do his numbers have to explain everything in the universe? No, that’s the funny thing. We don’t even know what all is out there. So, of course, his numbers can’t explain everything.

It’s funny how all the religious zealots come out of their caves screaming at a guy who is significantly smarter than them (and who has very likely achieved a lot more, too.)

Boy, yet another (just read the one re forging of the NT) – it‘s hilarious if it wasn’t so tragic. How any person with a brain can honestly believe they have all the answers, they know everything about everything (you’d have to know that in order to make these absolute statements) – is beyond me. Their arrogance is beyond understanding. It also shows he hasn’t honestly done research re the Bible being true – it can be proven beyond reasonable doubt. Is everything in the bible true? Then it is ok to kill ones brother? It is ok to have wives and concubines? A man actually lived inside a whale? I could go on, and find places where it is ok to kill and others where it is not, And hundreds more inconsistencies, would not an all powerful being who is older than this universe it somehow created, be able to fix these?

We cannot presume to judge Dr. Hawking for his statements because most have not walked a mile in his shoes (wheelchair). One of his trials was obviously ALS. The Lord will take that into consideration and will likely also consider that Hawking developed his brain power to the best of his ability. I for one look forward to the Mercy of the Judge when I stand before the pleasing bar of God and hope for the mercy extended to ALL…including Dr. Hawking. Beckisnuts, how does Hawking’s opinion on religion carry a “great deal of weight”? Is he an authority on metaphysics? If he ventured an opinion on American politics should it hold any more weight than any other British non-politician? Being smart in one area does not compute into expertise in another. Plus, I‘m guessing his authority on these matters would only be recognized by those who don’t believe in God. People who believe would recognize his opinion as what it is: religious disbelief.

BTW, on another topic. I called Goldline to inquire into buying some Canadian Gold coins (purest gold on the market) and their rep tried to interest me in the old French gold coins at a much inflated price. Of course, I declined. But I wonder how many of you here may have fallen for that? Glenn claims he buys those old coins, but if he does, he is getting cheated. Goldline sells them for over double what the wholesale price is and for much more than the market value is. If there is upheaval and one needs gold, their value as an antique coin will not be helpful unless one can find a buyer for antique coins, which is unlikely in times of financial chaos. Just something to consider folks.

Has it ever occurred to you believers here, that if there is a god, it would realize that some people cannot honestly believe in the supernatural from an intellectual standpoint? Is your god so simple-minded that it could not understand that simple fact? There are so many reasons on so many different levels as to why religion, Jesus, and of it, is simply too far out for many good, decent folks to swallow? “Oh, but you must have faith and believe the unbelieveable. If you don’t, there’s a lot of misery waiting when you die! You better accept all manner of unproveable and ancient ideas or else!”

Well no thank you. We’ll pass on that when the plate is passed our way. When we die, some of us know that we will simply return to nothing, because that is what die means. There was nothing before our bodies were created and when our bodies die, there will be nothing. I am fine with that. Meanwhile, there’s no one peering into our minds 24/7 and no wasted time and energy worrying about nonsense that doesn’t exist in the first place.

It does carry a lot of weight with people who really don’t understand education and what it does. Dr. Hawking is an expert on physics (more specifically cosmology and theoretical astronomy). If he speaks on matters on which he is an expert, you should weigh his opinion appropriately. If he speaks on matters on which he is not an expert, you should weigh his opinion appropriately.

We often invite experts from other fields to speak at our conferences. Often it’s on topics where there seems to be potential for synergy (like biologist and surface chemists working together on biosensors). But their opinions on science outside of their expertise is not always…. realistic and it is weighed accordingly.

You cannot answer the question where did everything come from? Christians believe it was God, but then scientists say “Where did he come from?” Scientists believe in the big bang, or with Hawkins, multiple big bangs and universes, but Christians say “Where did that stuff come from?”

If there is a God, “where did he come from” and if there is no God, then “where did the matter and antimatter that make up this and other universes come from? Did it come from supreme being aliens? Well, where did they come from? Were they spat out of black holes? Where did they come from?

It’s a never ending circle that leads one in an infinite loop. So is Infinity God? Nah, that concept had to start somewhere too?

To paraphrase Glenn Beck, your head will explode if you try to answer this question. Every answer you can come up with can also validly be questioned with “yeah, but where did THAT come from?”

Full disclosure, I do believe in God and have experienced miracles. I cannot answer where HE came from no more than non-believers can answer where what they believe originated everything came from.

So with not being able to answer where anything came from, why not believe in something that gives you hope after this. Give it a try, non-believers. God will gladly help you if you will ask him.

How absurd. Mr. Hawking can no more prove that heaven doesn’t exist than I can prove that it does. Ultimately it comes down to faith. But why pay attention to him on matters of religion just because he is, admittedly, brilliant on matters of science and physics? If I want my house rewired or my chimney rebuilt, do I hire someone like Mr. Hawking (his disability notwithstanding)? No, I hire the most competent electrician or mason I know. If I have questions about theology, Mr. Hawking is most definitely NOT the go-to guy. Frankly, I know much more about it than he does … and there are plenty of others who know more about it than me. But I’ll posit this: Thomas Aquinas could absolutely whup Stephen Hawking’s butt when it comes to intelligence on matters religious.

No need to harbor those guilty feelings about it. The good news is, I have plenty more to share with you fine people. I am onto Glenn’s little game and have been for quite a while now. Just today, Glenn repeated his words of December 7, 2010, where he said we would all see the “ARM OF GOD” in our lifetimes. Glenn may actually believe such nonsense for real, although I think he makes some statements to spice up his show. But if he has gone over the edge and is really starting to believe all the hocus pocus his circle of religious nutters have been discussing, the ride should get extremely interesting over the coming weeks. I‘m looking forward to that day when Glenn slips up in one of his emotional outbursts when his sitters Stu and Pat aren’t there to fix it up for him. That will surely be a hoot. I‘m sure there’ll be many more interesting developments in the meantime however. Glenn is just getting into gear.

The universe is a hologram/black hole/frothing multiverse that sprang from quantum fluctuations. It has 11 dimensions, most of which are too small to detect, but they’re there, because physics, math and logic dictate.

But consciousness separate from a brain, or the existence of an intelligent being beyond space and time are unprovable and logically impossible, therefore they cannot exist.

      Really? Okay, whatever you say.

As the old saying goes, those who actually pay attention while attending the seminary become non-believers. Hawkin doesn’t give opinions as he is a rational scientist. For the believers here, please explain the need for the council of Nicea and other rewrites and editing of the bible. If it is all supposedly the word of God then why would men of the church have to edit it and alter verses?

Boy for a guy as smart as he is he’s pretty dumb. First cause my friend? What about it?

Nothing is spontaneous, there is always a source of inspiration, energy, ignition, fuel, heat, oxygen. Nothing exists without purpose and anyway you slice the Universe up from the immense to the DNA, nothing can justify why it even exists. Its purpose, its sex, its purposeful sexual recreation of itself and so on. To say there is no heaven, then one has to answer these fundamental questions. He can’t so he just says they are fairy tales for the scared of the dark people. Wow, that is brilliant!

If I were him I might question Heaven too. Usually God receives first blame for problems in life, even among believers. I do have compassion for his afflictions, I would not have his money or knowledge and be trapped in that body for the whole world. I would rather have hope in a place where all tears and frailty of flesh will be wiped away than be like poor Rover who’s dead all over. My faith and hope of a better place makes it so much easier to get through a day.

Steve is attempting to trump his theory over accepted scientific law: The law of bio-genesis is factual and it says that life begets life ALL the time. If life begets life all the time then the first life formed on earth must have been created by another form of life.

We can take this line of thinking one step further by stating: If the law of bio-genesis is a fact then laws operate in our universe. If laws operate in our universe then our universe operates in predictable patterns. If our universe operates in predictable patterns then chaos does not move our universe.

If our universe was not created by an intelligent designer, then it had to have spontaneously spurted from chaos. If our universe was a place where chaos made things, we would see sign of that chaos creating things all the time- science would have no place, because all things would be unpredictable and the basic rules that guide scientific experimentation would be an impossible feat.

This too would negate Steve from being a reliable source of information and his science would be a fools game.

Poor Steve sounds more like Charles Darwin every day.

Not to mention that there are more unbelievers than believers, it is horrifying for believers to discover this for our own eyes, we are on the narrow path that only a few will find that leads to life, they are on the wide path that MANY will take and leads to death.

@ Beckisnuts- “would realize that some people cannot honestly believe in the supernatural from an intellectual standpoint?” He already addressed that. In fact many in the 1st century saw these miracles performed and laughed and scoffed just as you do. 1 Corinthians 1:18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 19 For it is written: “ I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, And bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.” 20 Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the disputer of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? 21 For since, in the wisdom of God, the world through wisdom did not know God, it pleased God through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe. 22 For Jews request a sign, and Greeks seek after wisdom; 23 but we preach Christ crucified, to the Jews a stumbling block and to the Greeks foolishness, 24 but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25 Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.
-The word of God is so simple to understand yet those who seek after man‘s wisdom and not God’s are the one’s that will have to answer. If they choose not to believe, that is their fault, not God’s. You can’t run a stop sign and then blame it on the cop can you? You can’t claim intellectual disbelief and blame it on

(cont’d)- God. It‘s easier to not be responsible for one’s actions than to “man up.” I think that’s why atheism is so appealing these days is that the disbeliever has no responsibility. They think that if they just shut their eyes and don‘t believe they won’t be punished for anything they do that God does not exist that everything will be alright. It’s the same mentality a teenager has of going out and partying with friends in hopes of not getting caught. This way it’s easier to live your life just how you want it and there are no repercussions. But you also have to ask yourself, what if there IS a God? Would you really be willing to take that chance? Would you run that red light or go over the speed limit if you knew a cop would pull you over for doing such?

Would you run a red light or speed if you knew a cop was nearby?

Any story of what caused the Big Bang has to be taken on faith, because science cannot prove what caused it. Hawking treats science as a religion, and the sad thing is, its a religion that offers no explanation for the origin of the universe. It can only explain what is observable.

I wish someone would ask Stephen Hawking this question:

Who designed mathematics? It’s a language, it’s Universal, meaning that even aliens from another planet can understand it and, through it, us, and vice versa; we all understand, virtually from birth, that two pieces of candy are better than one, we are born knowing the language; and with this language, everything and every process in the Cosmos can be described and/or understood.

So, who designed this universal language anyway? That it works Universally is proof of a Mind behind the Design, but whose Mind?

I wish someone would ask Stephen Hawking this one question and let him get busy on the answer.

Faith is a gift from God. We who have it are blessed and because we have it, have the ability to pray for those who don’t. I shall pray for Hawking. It seems to me that if I were a parapelgic, I would be angry at some level and it is reasonable that my anger would provide the necessary illusion in my life to keep me from God. I was told recently that we can pray to God’s infinite power not to our human limitation. This seems apparent but it was insightful and inspiring to me. So now when I pray, instead of praying for just me and mine I now pray for the conversion of all sinners.

This is going to really tick some of you off, so let me start by saying that is not my intention. I too am an atheist, but I have to take issue with what some of you have asserted about Hawking. Mr. Hawking enjoys his current level of celebrity because of his disabilities. He was not a particularly bright physics student, in truth. It was only after his disease surfaced that he became substantially famous, so consider him the ‘affirmative action physicist.

Like many who suffer from disabilities, like the blind whose sense of hearing and smell sharpen, so it is true of somebody‘s mind when that’s all they have that works properly. His mind compensates for his complete lack of physical ability. It has made his mind stronger. He is also unbelievably arrogant. He believes his intelligence entitles him to certain special dispensations.

Mr. Hawking has been wrong about a number of substantial things in physics, among them the ‘information paradox’ in which he was bested by a plumber-turned-theoretician, Donald Suskind. He is also likely wrong about Hawking radiation, his notion of how black holes ‘evaporate’ over time. In fact, in physics, Stephen Hawking’s greatest achievements to date are to essentially parrott Albert Einstein with a few new twists.

That said, the one thing I agree with Mr. Hawking about is the nature of heaven. I think his analogy to a computer is quite correct. A brain is an organic computer.
