Stressed About the Super Bowl? Study Says That Could Kill You

Two teams with die-hard fans meet this Super Bowl Sunday. But experts warn that an emotional stake in the game could have heart-stopping consequences.

That’s what happened in Los Angeles County after the then-L.A. Rams lost the 1980 Super Bowl.

“There was a 15 percent increase in cardiac death among men, there was also a 27 percent increase in cardiac death among women,” said Dr. Robert A. Kloner, Good Samaritan Hospital, Los Angeles.

Fans can have an intense connection to their favorite team, leading to surges in adrenaline during big plays — and big disappointments.

“This can increase heart rate, increase blood pressure, increase the vigor with which the heart contracts,” said Dr. Kloner.

Losing can be a real heart breaker.

“Any type of stressful event can precipitate an increase in cardiovascular events,” said Dr. Joon Lee, Cardiologist, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center - who is also a Steelers fan.

    It is very dissapointing if you allow an outcome of any sporting event to streess you out. Get real it’s not life or death unless you allow it to be.If your a player or in some way part of team organization, then the outcome may effect your income.. the rest of you, IT’S ONLY A GAME!!! Enjoy if your team wins and be sad if your team losses. STILL ONLY A GAME

    Isn’t this what exercise does? I’d rather die watching a football game than die on a treadmill. If exercise is so great, why don’t you ever see joggers smiling?

    Thank God Green Bay won. Numerous fans do not support a rapist getting a pass because he is a Quarterback. Maybe he will rape the wrong girl and her father will make sure the miserabel excuse of a human calls the signals in High Tenor.

    I guess the most stressful sport I have ever witnessed is little league baseball. Parents screaming their lungs out at their own kids, not all parents, but if you had a kid in the game you know how ignorant a parent can be when they just want to win. I dont remember any heart atacks though. But it was a disgusting sight. Screaming, slobbering, throwing things , shootings. Maybe thats explains the heart atacks after your an adult, trmamatized as a child by little league.

    I quit watching football years ago when they started playing for money instead of the love for the game. I have better things to do than watch games on the tv. Like post comments on the Blaze.

    I’m sure these statistics could apply to a lot of things like..giving a speech, a first date, taking a big test. The media is starved for stories to fill their 24 hr time slot so sometimes we have to consume some garbage to appreciate the real news. The Blaze…be selective in your search for news worthy ingredients.
