CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico (AP) — A U.S. university student was killed in a shooting attack on a car, becoming the fifth American slain in this violent border city in six days, Mexican and U.S. authorities said Wednesday.
Eder Diaz, a student at the University of Texas at El Paso, was killed Tuesday evening along with a classmate, the U.S. Consulate in Ciudad Juarez said in a statement e-mailed to The Associated Press. The consulate said it had not yet confirmed whether the other victim was also a U.S. citizen.
An investigator from the state of Chihuahua, where Ciudad Juarez is located, identified the second victim as Manuel Acosta, and said he was from Chihuahua’s capital of the same name.
The investigator, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the case, told the AP that gunmen opened fire on a car in which Diaz and Acosta were traveling.
Diaz, 23, was a business major, while Acosta, 25, was a computer information-systems major, university spokesman Steve Lazarin said.
Diaz was the fifth U.S. citizen to be killed in Ciudad Juarez since Friday. All of the victims were from El Paso, which is located across the border from Ciudad Juarez.
Luis Carlos Araiza, 15, a student at Bowie High School in El Paso, and Joanna Herrera, 27, were fatally shot while traveling in a BMW sport utility vehicle near the Zaragoza international bridge Saturday. Mexican officials said they had criminal records but would not elaborate.
Edgar Lopez, 35, was shot and killed Saturday at a residence in Ciudad Juarez, while on Friday, Lorena Izaguirre, 24, was killed at a tortilla shop.
Ciudad Juarez has become one of the world’s deadliest cities amid a turf war between the Sinaloa and Juarez drug cartels. More than 2,000 people have been killed this year in the city.
The most recent attacks represent the deadliest week for Americans in Mexico since Feb. 1, when four U.S. citizens were killed in different parts of the country. The largest previous single-city death toll for Americans was on May 9, 2009, when four U.S. citizens were slain in Tijuana, across the border from San Diego, California.
The U.S. State Department has issued a travel warning for several parts of Mexico, including Chihuahua state. The department said in the warning that Ciudad Juarez is of special concern. Three people associated with the U.S. Consulate there, including two U.S. citizens, were killed last March.
In the warning, the U.S. government advises its citizens to defer unnecessary travel to Ciudad Juarez and to the Guadalupe Bravo area, southeast of Ciudad Juarez.
“In both areas, American citizens have been victims of drug related violence,” the warning says.

Posted on November 4, 2010 at 3:57amNEW AMERICAN SAVIORS asks, “Can anyone tell me where the most dangerous parts of the Border with Mexico are….”
I will be bluntly truthful with you. There are no safe areas along our southern border. You value your life and the lives of your loved ones. Stay at least one-hundred miles north of the Mexican border, anywhere along the Mexican border.
There are NO safe areas along the Mexican border, this include major American cities along this border such as Phoenix, which is now the most dangerous city in America.
Don’t be foolish, don’t risk your life, stay far away from Mexico.

Posted on November 3, 2010 at 11:33pmI hate to be the one to say “I told you so” but forget what airhead napolitano says – this border is a dangerous and horrible mess and anyone that chooses to go across or even within 50 miles is just asking for whatever they get dished out to. It is ten times worse since little barry boy chose to sue us – write us up in the UN report and everybody else jumping on board in support of the illegals – they are more brazen, more arrogant, more dangerous – remind you of anybody????

Posted on November 3, 2010 at 11:06pmIt is my profound belief that regime change has become inevitable with respect to an obviously failing Mexican government. Not to say that regime change should be the policy of the US, but, maybe it should be. I don’t know how anyone with an IQ over 10 can look at the current failing state in Mexico and not agree that by definition Mexico is already undergoing the process of regime change. 30,000 dead last year in the narco war and no end in sight.
The narco terrorists in Mexico have the corrupt and slimy regime on the ropes and even the Mexican Army cannot stop the violence. This situation could easily be brought to an end by US involvement, but I don’t think it would or should look like an invasion. Alternatively we should be lending our hand in the decapitation of the drug cartels leadership and splinter the remaining factions.
However if that is all we do then it would be safe to say the decapitated leadership would only spring hydra-like new heads under the current Mexican Governments corrupt elites who would be easily co opted by the violence and money that would remain after the decapitation and a withdrawal of US support. In short, I think regime change is coming to Mexico regardless of US intervention and better that we should assist and help steer the eventual form of government vs. allowing the proverbial tortilla chips to fall where they may.
The answer to our woes over the Mexican issue are complex and far reaching with strong roots in our citizenries inability to resist the temptation of cheap drugs and cheap labor, assisted by the cowardice of the Mexican people and cemented by our politicians unwillingness to confront the issue with a clarity of judgment or moral imperative/value.
In the end the Mexican issue will either steepen in the gravity of our own appetites for cheap euphoria and cheap labor, or we will begin to realize that enough is enough and We the People of the United States of America will hold the Mexican people and their government responsible for their own illicit activities after we have policed our own, or in a congruent mix of both, but in any event, if history has shown us anything at all, we know without doubt that all evil needs to prevail is for good men to do nothing. So take some action and make a contribution to the solution.

Hey Y’all here is what we need to do now. We have the power, dont go to Nevada. If you like to gamble go to Tunica, MS. Las Vegas of the South. Dont even drive through Nevada, if you dont have to. No California, Mass., NY. any state that voted for the libs. Move your bank accnts to banks who are in conservative states. No conventions in CA, go to Arizona, no superbowls, call the NFL.. Get my point, turn off ABC, NBC, CBS, and all there cable stations.
Report Post »It is grass roots I know, but spread the word. Not Buffet, Gates, Soros, or all of them combined, can overpower the people. Show the unions as well as the government. If you are not for us, you are against us. Boycott the lib states, they will collapse. Tell your local officials, NO bailouts. The illegals and libs can help them. See what I mean, If it catches on they are done. They think they can hijack America. Show them they can not. Pass it on. It may start small, but if it grows. YEEHAAAW!

Posted on November 3, 2010 at 11:05pmAs much as I would like to see us clean up Mexico, there is already a lot of people that are wanting us out of the other wars. But unless they come here and kill U.S. citizens then its pretty much out of our hands. Even though we know that Mexico won‘t or can’t solve the killings. We will just have make a totally closed border and not let our citizens go down there. Besides we don’t know exactly what these persons were doing down there.

Posted on November 3, 2010 at 11:22pmIf you are talking about invasion of mexico, that would result in the same style of actions going on over in Afghanistan. We would not only face a hostile mexican army, a hostile mexican people, and in addition a hostile (to all) drug cartels as well.
This would degenerate into a mulit faction geurilla campaign with only one thing common between them at that point, the total hatered of America for invasion of their homeland.
And think on this before saying they would welcome us with an invasion, they hold honor of their land just as highly as most Americans do (not counting Obama-san) and if someone invaded us, do you not think we would stir up against them like a hive of totally ripped hornets?
So they would do the same to us.
Report Post »TruthTalker
Posted on November 3, 2010 at 11:44pmNot talking about invasion, but if it did go down that way, Your description is not even close to what would happen. It would be totally one sided, in our favor. Period. Then again, if a trepid invasion occurred, then maybe. I don’t believe in being trepid in war.

Posted on November 3, 2010 at 10:49pmThe country formerly known as Mexico is now in the midst of a full blown narco-insurgency.Mexico’s refugees are pouring into our republic at an all time rate and there have been more killings of Mexicans than US soldiers in an all out global asymetric conflict by a factor of 5. When will the American sheeple wake up and recognize we are being invaded on our southern border? This is about to get well past out of hand and in all the confusion amid the violence, islamic fundamentalists are going to be able to walk across our unprotected border and inflict untold sorrow upon our great land yet again.

Posted on November 3, 2010 at 11:18pmWhy do we not just call home all US citizens within the territories of mexico, period, and then shut the border down completely. I mean that nothing comes in or out, no tourists, no trade, no nothing north or south period. Build the wall-barrier-moat with flaming oil or whatever, and then bring our military back from overseas and help back up with real force (for drug dealers who are stupid and seek to be removed from the gene pool) the border patrol.
At the same time, start reigning in and prosecuting any and all corruptions of political figures found in the US via the drug lords, etc. Simply, clean the bloody house up.
Third, let’s get the political bosses hands off our right to bear arms, we here in AZ already need them to deal with the cartels gangs.
Maybe posting bounties so large on the heads of the cartel lords would help as well, yes I know of the bounty on Bin Lauden has not worked yet, however greed can be a powerful motivator in these cartels, just as fear of angering america is too.
Maybe its past time we get more than a little bit angry.

Posted on November 4, 2010 at 12:39amYeah, when do they issue the TRAVEL WARNING?! I cannot believe people aren’t seeing what is going on down there. IT IS A WAR ZONE! DON’T GO TO MEXICO!! And to all the idiots calling US racists for not wanting illegals coming here, why don’t you pool all that special interest money and lawyers you all find and do something to make the immigration process easier?? Why don’t you go down to Mexico and help the people who want to come here do so LEGALLY?? You could teach them about America, help them through the process, and teach them English so they will be ready to live and work here. It would probably be cheaper than paying thugs to protest and cause trouble for EVERYONE. In the meantime, GREAT WALL OF MEXICO! China kept the marauding Mongols at bay quite effectively, and that was 2700 years ago for cryin’ out loud. Protect US! Help the people IN Mexico if you want to do something truly ‘selfless’. —- Not racist, common sense!
