Student Body President at Cal State Fresno Is Illegal Immigrant

Immigration activists are cheering for Cal State Fresno student body president Pedro Ramirez for being an example of the potential of America’s illegal immigrant population. But since an anonymous tip to the school’s newspaper outed Ramirez as an illegal alien who has been living in the U.S. since he was three-years-old, critics are demanding his resignation.

Student Body President at Cal State Fresno Is Illegal Immigrant

(Fresno BeeZ / August 27, 2009)

According to the LA Times, Ramirez learned he wasn’t a United States citizen when his parents revealed the secret as he was filling out college applications. Ramirez carried the secret with him to Cal State University where the 22-year-old now studies political science.

“In a way, I’m relieved,” Ramirez told the Times. “I don’t want to be a liability or cost the school donations. I never really thought this was going to happen. But now that it’s out there, I finally feel ready to say ‘Yes, it’s me. I’m one of the thousands.’ ”

But many are unhappy with Ramirez and are demanding his resignation, saying he wasn’t honest with the student body about his immigration status when he ran for president. “He misled the students … he should step down,” Cole Rojewski, president of the campus‘ College Republicans and one of Ramirez’s opponents in the race for president, said in a television interview.

Meanwhile, Cal State school officials claim Ramirez broke no rules in running for student body president and cannot be forced to resign. “To our way of thinking he hasn’t done anything wrong,” said Paul Oliaro, vice president for Student Affairs.

“This is a very diverse region, agriculture is dominant, and this is going to cause a lot of controversy. But the reality is that these students are … here, they’re legitimate students, and if anything, Pedro shows what they can contribute,” Oliaro said, adding, “We’ll see how this plays out.”

It‘s unclear whether Ramirez’s immigration status was disclosed to university admissions at the time he applied. With no citizenship papers, Ramirez reportedly couldn’t qualify for most financial aid plans. However, he began attending the university after the state’s legislature approved a law allowing any student who attended a California high school for at least three years to pay in-state tuition rates, regardless of citizenship status.

Though the anonymous newspaper tip revealed Ramirez’s secret to his fellow students, school officials had known of his illegal status.

“He personally notified me and ASI advisers about his immigration status, and volunteered to serve without pay as president, since his status does not allow him to receive a paycheck,” Cal State Fresno President John Welty said in a prepared statement.

The revelation of Ramirez’s citizenship status comes as Democratic leaders in Congress are preparing to vote on the DREAM Act before the close of the 111th Congress and just two days after the California Supreme Court unanimously voted to allow illegal immigrants who graduate from state high schools to receive in-state tuition rates at California’s public universities.

CA’s debt is because of their own bad choices, I do not want the Gov’t using any of my money to bail CA out of debt for their own financial suicide that happens time and time again. Let Nancy open up her personal checkbook and spread her wealth around if she feels that strong about it. The Gov’t needs to stop giving money to the sanctuary cities to, let them pay for their own generosity. Let‘s see what choices they make when their residents have to pay for their Representatives’ bad decisions.

Once it meant something to be an American. The Left has eroded that status, along with every other worthy thing; they devalue the valuable, they deceive because they cannot tell the truth and succeed. Read John 8:44, and you’ll see who leads them: the same being Alinsky dedicated ‘Rules for Radicals’ to. California is but the shining (although heavily patinaed) example of that Kingdom.

Come on! I don‘t care if he isn’t a citizen or not, but to be in this country he is supposed to be a citizen. Either we have immigration laws or no laws. Some one has to make up their mind. The man is an illegal, whether it’s his fault or not. He should be sent back to where his family came from. They aren’t citizens either. So the same for them. He took advantage of our government and the taxpayers. Does the government know what is going on, do they care or are they just stupid?

There are many American citizens, who have children who go to college out of state and are not able to get in state tuition. Both of my children, live, work and go to college in Oregon and have never qualified for in state tuition or for any other grants. This just does not seem fair. I am happy this young man did well but I think I may be paying the price for others who should be contributing to the cost.

“Pedro Ramirez for being an example of the potential of America’s illegal immigrant population.”

I think people are misunderstanding something here. I don’t think people think that Illegal Immigrants are stupid, or worthless, or not as good as Legals.

Every other country would prevent, and/or deport someone that didn’t have a Legal right to be there.

There is a Legal way to enter America, and become a American.

Do I think Pedro Ramirez should be deported. No. If it’s true that he was 3 years old when his parents brought him to America Illegally, then he didn’t break the law, his parents did. If he was under the age of 18, he should be deported back with his family, or possibly give the family a chance to earn their citizenships’ depending on each case.

Pedro Ramirez should now be force to start the process to become a legal citizen. He shouldn‘t be just granted citizenship just because he’s a smart guy.

If you come to America, Then you should want to be a American, and you should Pledge to The American Flag, and learn to speak English, and protect the Constitution, and pay taxes. Just like the rest of us should.

Since it’s obvious you hate this country and how it was founded, why don’t you just leave? As far as us WHITE men being illegal–what kind of logic is that? Last time I checked, before our Great Nation was formed, there was no other single nation holding this land. Oh, you are probably referring to the estimated 12,000 indian tribes that had been fighting amongst themselves for centuries before we got here. Since the Cal University system is just this week actively seeking out of state students, who pay higher tuition, I can see them simply charging him more, as if money can buy a person’s legitimacy. California is a complete joke. I can’t believe that the entire state is incapable of making the connection with the refusal to deport illegal immigrants with their ridiculously bad economic situation.

The media is talking about illegals receiving “in state tuition”. What that actually means is that the taxpayers are paying for the college education of illegal immigrants. In-state-tuition means taxpayer subsidized.

Republicans cannot give 1 cent of federal dollars to help California until California starts deporting illegals instead of giving scarce dollars to educate them.

It’s nothing more than infiltration by foreign powers. It happens just as often with Canadians, as well as people from many other parts of the world. Mexico would like nothing more than to regain control of the American Southwest. America is rapidly losing its identity. The future of our great nation is at risk if we can’t elect people who will take a pledge to stop this. We must also do something about the astonishing ignorance of the American people.

California needs to change it’s stationary to Mexico and be done with it. The rest of the country needs to treat California according to their behavior — A Foreign Territory.
We’ve got to cut our losses and erect a border fence around the state.
With the re-election of Brown as their governor, it became quite apparent that Californians are incapable of learning from their mistakes. There is no use in continuing to believe they will someday achieve consciousness and fend for themselves. They must be removed from reasoning, decent and lawful society as you would any individual who cannot correct their behavior. We cannot afford to keep expending resources and energy on them.

Let’s face it– this is why we are having an illegal immigration problem. We’ve allowed them to get away with it because of a bleeding-heart-liberal attitude, and they’ve taken the queue for a generation or more. We have to send the illegals a message– enter this country the correct way, just as we must do if we want to come to yours, or suffer the consequences. Since there haven’t been any consequences, their numbers have grown. If this Ramirez kid is so smart, then he should do well and pass his entrance exam with flying colors– in the meantime, TAKE YOUR PARENTS HOME, AND FILL OUT THE APPLICATION FROM MEXICO!

Deport him and his family… And blame his parents for breaking our laws… Actions do have consequences…

ANNMARIE- You sound like you genuinely want to understand why they keep coming here illegally. I heard on Stossel that because it’s the low skilled Mexicans that want to come here, it would take over 100 years to be approved for entry. You have to have skills that this country needs. They don’t all have family members that can sponsor them. Yet I agree with NSBLUES. It’s about the law. Too bad we have all these government programs that kill the spirit, and the possibility of the Dems buying votes with the giveaways. I came here legally from Cuba as a child. We waited for years to get out of that island prison. The Socialist Utopia of Cuba. This great country adopted me. I paid to get through nursing school. You have to give back, when a country like this opens its arms to you. Not Take. These American and Mexican Socialists want to equalize us all. But some will always be more equal than others. We can see that from the $179,000.00 salaries the Congress pays itself. Even Bush betrayed the trust.

Don’t know if anybody else did this but if you want to go to this website http://www.csufresno.edu/studentaffairs/contact/index.shtml, click on email Student Affairs and let Paul Oliaro, vice president for Student Affairs know how you feel. He obviously needs a lesson on the law.

It is about the law! Good rules and laws should be followed, other wise there is no justice or liberty. That being said, we all know how messed up the government is and how many bad laws there are. Even the good ones that we have are not followed or obeyed all the time.. if government kept the integrity of our boarders then we wouldn’t have so many illegals, even more if government didn‘t create the federal reserve we wouldn’t have subsidized agriculture which makes it hard for other countries to compete in a fair and balanced manner.. a lot of our governments bad policy over the last 100 years has created the desire for people to immigrate here, even if they had to do it illegal.

Bad laws need to be appealed. The Nazis were following their laws when they murdered millions of people. That is why it is so important that we vote to put people into power who have the moral character to lead by implementing and enforcing “good” laws. And have the courage stand up against and remove bad laws.

To every one saying that, “Illegals need to be deported and go apply to come back in the legal way.” You are right, but consider this. The same people who set up the new TSA airport security, are the same people who set up the immigration process. I know they are not the same individuals, but they are the same government with the same mind set, and yes, they like to grab people by their “junk” and make the whole process completely ridiculous.

That being said.. We as a country need to continue taking back our government and we need to fix our immigration/financial system. it is sad that a child has to suffer because his parents didn’t obey a broken system. and it is not just 1 child, it is millions.. in 2009 more children were born in American hospitals belonging to “immigrants” than to natural us citizens.
      God bless.

and now that we know????? He lied (yes-omission of the true is a lie) so do the right thing…which, by the way, is adherance to the law. I’m sick and tired of seeing lies and corruption being forgiven while the rest of us pay for the mistakes. Our system is breaking down because of it. And who, pray tell, paid for his extended education?

The Dream act is just a back door way of legalizing illegal immigrants. While it seems innocent on the surface that these kids were brought to this country by their parents, many as small children, the fact is that this will open the flood gates for citizenship for not only these kids but in the end for the illegal parents and then eventually for every member of their extended families. Additionally, why should an illegal get a tuition break over a student from another state that is an American citizen? Is this fair? And, how come the college and universities are not doing a credible job of background checking these students prior to admission? Finally, now that he has outed himself, why is he still at the school and does the school plan on getting back tuition for what is owed? Why has he not been picked up by the INS? Also, how does an illegal pass the background check to get in the military? I can understand those with green cards, but ILLEGALS? And if he is an illegal, regardless of the degree he gets, how des he plan on acquiring a law license? It seems to me we are granting too many special favors to people that should be deported.
