Student Health Care Costs to Skyrocket at Private NC College Due to Obamacare: ‘This Is the Beginning’

Guilford College in North Carolina will likely be forced to charge students 75 percent more for health insurance in order to comply with federal regulations under President Barack Obama’s sweeping healthcare law, college administrators told Campus Reform.
The cost for university provided health insurance is expected to increase dramatically from $668 to $1,179 in the 2012-2013 school year, Greg Bursavich, vice president for finance at Guilford College, told students in an email in late July.
“Our student health insurance policy premium has been substantially increased due to changes required by federal regulations issued on March 16, 2012 under the Affordable Care Act,” read the email from Bursavich.
More from the Leadership Institute’s Campus Reform:
In an exclusive interview with Campus Reform, Bursavich further implicated Obamacare for the drastic rise in prices.
“It is directly related – it is only related – to the new healthcare law,” said Bursavich. “There is no reason why it has gone up except the requirements of the new law have forced it to go up. That is the whole story.”
He added that costs were rising because ObamaCare mandates students are covered for certain health services “deemed essential” by the federal government.
“[T]he notion that the health care law wouldn’t cost everybody more money is nonsense,” said Bursavich. “[You can’t] begin adding coverage on things that used to not be covered and just assume that some genie in the sky is going to pay for it. We are all paying for it and this is the beginning.”
Guilford College reportedly requires all of their students to have some form of health insurance. Students can stay on their parents’ insurance, buy their own or utilize the school’s insurance plan.
“We want them to have insurance. We want our students to be taken care of,” Bursavich added. “It’s because we care about them.”

Posted on August 28, 2012 at 7:11amNo one said the insurance was free to these college students. It actually states that the college students will have to foot the bill. Most likely it will be a line item on their bill if they don’t already have insurance.

Posted on August 28, 2012 at 8:05am@Exrepublisheep : I agree. The School should not be responsible for the student healthcare. The parents should be. If the parents cannot afford it, they should apply for loans or assistance, not rely on the Government (aka Obama’s slush fund care) to do it.
A HUGE percentage of what the Federal Government does today is UNCONSTITUTIONAL.
Report Post »The Federal Government is illegally putting restrictions on our freedoms. The only way to fix this is to put good people in at the local level and work up. Putting any member of the DNR or the RNC in the Oval Office is suicide for America. WAKE UP.

Posted on August 28, 2012 at 9:30am“Guilford College reportedly requires all of their students to have some form of health insurance. Students can stay on their parents’ insurance, buy their own or utilize the school’s insurance plan.” First, its not reportedly, it is required (i.e. a mandate) that students have some form of health insurance. And by the way there are health insurance mandates at most colleges and universities. Second, most of the student health insurance covers visits to the university based health services and very little more. Third, an analysis of the real cost impact of the Affordable Health Care Act should include the provision that allows individuals to stay on their parents health care insurance. Which of course reduces the need for student health care insurance. But hey why let Truth get in the way of the Agenda.

Posted on August 28, 2012 at 10:34amYea, just walk in to some clinic and try to claim free health care. My insurance was filed wrong, and I didn’t get it free, I got a bill for $400 more than I owed. My health care I normally pay for by the year, but right before this monstrosity got the stamp of approval as a tax from the Supreme Court, my insurance insisted I pay only a quarter. AS SOON as it was upheld, I got a notice that my premium went up. 17% more. Supposedly there’s a part in the bill that allows people who make 400% of poverty (no, that’s not a typo, 400% of poverty) can qualify for the government to pay part of their bill.

Posted on August 28, 2012 at 10:38am@exrepub: The school doesn’t pay for the insurance it is the kids and their parents who pay for it. This info needs to get out to all the college students and their parents who are paying for school.

Posted on August 28, 2012 at 12:11pm@jrook who said “Which of course reduces the need for student health care insurance.”
But it increases the cost of the parent’s insurance. There is no free lunch. Obamacare mandates coverage for items people may not want or need. They have to pay for them anyway whether it is private insurance, parent’s insurance or school insurance. But then don’t let the facts get in the way of your Agenda.

Posted on August 28, 2012 at 12:48pmEXREPUBLISHEEP — Shut up. It’s a *private* school. Those students aren’t getting a dime off of you. Their healthcare plans were group plans put in place by the school and funded by the tuition dollars those students and their parents are paying. It’s exactly the same thing you probably get right now at your job. Punk.

Posted on August 27, 2012 at 9:39pmI go to a State University in NC and my insurance is going from $398 last semester to $709 this semester.
I was feeling lethargic last semester and scheduled a doctor’s appointment for which they told me I would need a physical. Long story short the insurance refused to pay for what they deemed a “routine physical” did not pay for any of my lab work, and I’m left footing the entire bill. They did not pay anything and raised my per semester cost. Thank you Obamacare!
