Students Claim Responsibility for Indonesia Crop Circle

Thousands of curious onlookers are flocking to central Indonesia to look at a “crop circle” in a rice field following rumors it was formed by a UFO. But a group of college students tried to quell those rumors by claiming responsibility on Tuesday.
The pattern looks like an intricately designed flower. Its 70-yard-wide (70-meter-wide) circle has drawn so much attention that police have blocked off the area with yellow tape.
Villagers have started charging entrance fees.
Guntur Purwanto, chief of Jogotirto village in Sleman district, said the circle appeared in the middle of the green rice paddies over the weekend.
Among those turning out Tuesday and offering opinions were officials from Indonesia’s space agency, well-respected astronomers and nuclear agency officials. And while extraterrestrial enthusiasts are excitedly giving credit to aliens, others are skeptical.
“We will not send investigators to the scene because we suspect the crop circle involves human invention, not natural phenomena, nor scientific phenomena associated with outer space creatures commonly referred to as aliens,” Thomas Djamaluddin, the head of atmospheric sciences and chief of astronomy research at NASA, told the Jakarta Globe.
And if the Jakarta Post is correct, that was the right decision. According to the Post, a group of students posted on the website studentmagz.com claiming responsibility. The group of seven students from Universitas Gadjah Mada reportedly made the circle to show off their design and math skills.
In 1991, Doug Bower and Dave Chorley shocked the world when they revealed that they could create, and were creating, crop circles in less than an hour:

Posted on January 25, 2011 at 12:36pmNot sure where I stand with Crop Circles, but I think it is pretty arrogant to think we are the only speck in this universe that has intelligent life on it. Just look up into the night sky, and start counting those stars.

Posted on January 25, 2011 at 4:44pmAgreed. But it’s hard to imagine how/why they could transit the huge distances measured in 100s of light-yrs to trample crops.

Posted on January 25, 2011 at 11:44amThere are people who still insist the pyramids had to be built by aliens from space. It has been shown to be fairly simple to design a pyramid, and with generations of experts of stone cutters and such to be able to make one.
Crop circles are the same way, experience from a simple one at the start, and then evolving into more and more complex designs.

Posted on January 25, 2011 at 10:13amIf one group of people could make a crop circle in less than an hour in England and other nations, so why not make one in India. Nothing having to do with UFO’s and the little green or gray men for that matter; it is just some well thought out patterns done by human beings.

This matter is about at rest like the sightings of Elvis still being alive or on a UFO; the various multi headed conspiracies of JFK, and such. For every ‘mystery’ or ‘theory’ there will always be someone who will believe it even when confronted with concrete proof of the origins.
There are probably some people to this day who will claim the earth is flat just to have something to disagree with.

Posted on January 25, 2011 at 1:26pmI’m considering going into hops farming soon, on 40 acres (well, technically, 39 for farming, 1 for living). Any idiots feel like making crop circles on my crops, and are caught, will find themselves brought up on no amount of legal charges and will have themselves sued until they bleed. Many crops are a big up front cost to put in the ground, and ignorant hooligans out for fun that stomp them down can potentially put a farmer out of business.
