A University of Rochester economics professor in New York had about 30 students stand silently in his classroom Wednesday to protest comments he’d published on his blog defending Rush Limbaugh after he called a Georgetown Law student a “slut.”

Economics professor Steven Landsburg (Image source: Rochester Democrat and Chronicle)
Steven Landsburg wrote in a post titled “Rush to Judgement” that Sandra Fluke, while deserving “the same basic respect we owe to any human being, her position…deserves none.” Her belief that contraception should be subsidized, he said, “deserves only to be ridiculed, mocked and jeered.”
Landsburg published the post on March 2, before Limbaugh apologized for his remarks. In the post, he praised Limbaugh’s “spot-on analogy,“ saying ”[i]f I can reasonably be required to pay for someone else’s sex life (absent any argument about externalities or other market failures), then I can reasonably demand to share in the benefits.”
He went on to disagree with Limbaugh’s use of the word “slut,“ suggesting a better word would have been ”prostitute“ or ”a five-letter synonym.”
“[B]ut that’s still wrong because Ms. Fluke is not in fact demanding to be paid for sex,” he said. “Her demand is to be paid. The right word for that is something much closer to ‘extortionist.’ Or better yet, ‘extortionist with an overweening sense of entitlement.’ Is there a single word for that?”
According to the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle, Landsburg’s comments created a storm of controversy on campus, with university president Joel Seligman even penning a statement of condemnation, saying he was “outraged that any professor would demean a student in this fashion.”
“To openly ridicule, mock, or jeer a student in this way is about the most offensive thing a professor can do,” Seligman wrote. “We are here to educate, to nurture, to inspire, not to engage in character assassination.”
University spokeswoman Sharon Dickman told the newspaper protesting students entered Landsburg’s mid-afternoon class while he was teaching.
“They formed a line between him and the class. And he continued to lecture,” Dickman said, adding that campus police officers were on the scene but did not need to intervene.
Landsburg continued teaching and only ended class about five minute early, she said.
Rochester ABC affiliate WHAM-TV reported fliers passed around campus in advance of the protest denounced Landsburg’s “attempt to smear a gender with derogatory terms.”
“We are dismayed that a fully tenured academic would so carelessly sully our fine institution’s name,” the flier said.
In an email to the Democrat and Chronicle, Landsburg said Seligman wants the University of Rochester to be a place where ideas can freely be exchanged, but said Fluke “didn’t even pretend to be interested in debating any of the serious issues raised by the question of when some of us should pick up the tab for others’ expenses.”
Landsburg told WHAM that if a student of his were to make Fluke’s argument in an assignment, he’d be “gentler” in his criticism, though would still probably fail them.
“I think I would be considerably gentler with my students, but I think a student who turned in a paper that was devoid of argument like Fluke’s testimony was, they would not get a passing grade,” he said.

Just wondering… would love to see what kinda guys would warrant such need… Just saying…
PS Megyn Kelley really took this whole ridiculous thing on at the end of O’Reilly Thursday night. Her point was that, in effect, this trashes what the REAL needs are of people, like her sister who is single raising 3 kids alone, 2 in college. She’s absolutely right. There are people with legitimate needs that need to be addressed (and I don’t believe in Obamacare) that we need to plan out how we will be able to drop Obamacare and put some measures in place for those who REALLY need help.
I’ll tell you what, I turn off any radio or TV show that is still talking about this. (Yes, I read this article-my bad) Right now we have vetted our candidates for 7 months, we have about 7 months to take on BO. There is NO WAY for Rick or Newt or Paul to get the delegates. Ok. Posted on March 9, 2012 at 9:30amNot sure who is stupider here the Professor or Rush. Although I guess it is the professors job to pick the question to support his answer while Rush does that as a manner of course. Two critical items are left out, one by Rush and one by the professor in their biased view of the issue and thus their slanted question. First Rush continues to indicate that taxpayers would subsidize contraception pills which is incorrect as the requirement would be that they are covered by insurance. The professors use of the word subsidize is also incorrect particularly in those instances where you have a prescription drug benefit that may well cover viagra, prophylactic medications such as antibiotics to lower the risk of an infection that has not occurred yet. Arguing that contraception pills or device be covered by insurance is not different than hair replacements, cosmetic surgery, diet pills, etc. This issue is a classic example of ideologues who seek or have a desired answer or position and manipulate the question and debate to support it. A pitiful intellectual state.

Our beef is with LIFESTYLE choices that liberals want subsidized (and YES, subsidized is the correct word since it’s US that she wants to pay her PREMIUM–your hubris at claiming an econ professor misused that word is telling), not with medical decisions. Your straw man is hereby knocked down: conservatives are ALSO against public money supporting cosmetic surgery (for the most part–facial reconstruction might be an exception), diet pills, hair replacement, and everything else that anyone can pay for themselves. If insurance companies WANT to provide those options in a policy, no one is against that, but let the increased premiums be covered by individuals who desire such, not by the public.

Is she using cocaine or heroin for birth control? Maybe 40mg Oxycontin purchased from the neighborhood pill pusher. I just don’t get it. Now I hear that this student is a 30 year old professional student and I question her intelligence. I mean if she has been in college since she was 19, to be kind, that is eleven years of college. Lets say that each semester cost 40,000 a year, that is 22 semesters with or without summer secessions. She has spent over $880,000. on some sort of degree in eleven years. If she can pay, oh, I’m sorry, her parents paid $880,000 on education. Oh, maybe she has student loans for that amount of money. It is no wonder that she needs that much sex to get through if I had $880,000 in student loans I would need something to help me to forget I took classes that will never pay off my loans. Yes she is at Harvard Law, but is she working to become a lawyer or is she studying art education that might pay her $30,000 a year if she is lucky. It really doesn’t matter because she never intends to have to pay it back. Eleven years and she still hasn’t graduated yet?

After a losing a chat about economic the economic professor made a snide remark. And my uncle said I don’t blame you for being ignorant and resorting to insults. You’re just a big idiot who paid tens of thousands to be taught to memorize to work of some other idiot. Teaching your students to memorize what you memorized. I’m not sure if you have any idea what college is like, but no one gets coddled. Indoctrinate as what? Misinform? College is a place where ideas of all types are challenged, so that students can form their own ideas. You informing your children of only what you want them to know is misinformation. Indoctrinating them into your beliefs without giving them the opportunity to make their own choices. Coddling.
“Obviously it’s now considered character assassination to disagree with a woman: or perhaps I should say, a leftist woman, for the lefties surely do not include defense of conservative ladies in their manufactured outrage.”
Actually, I think the biggest problem here is the overall insinuation. Free speech: call Fluke what you want or conservative women what you want. But calling Fluke a slut in this context right here implies that anyone who uses birth control is a slut. Just because someone uses birth control does not make them a slut. I went on birth control for many years before I ever even thought of engaging in any sexual activity because I was taken to the hospital twice thanks to painful cramps which were solved on account of birth control. It’s a health issue, too.
