Students Severely Sunburned at School Field Day Because of Little-Known State Sunscreen Law

Jesse Michener is outraged after her two daughters returned home from a school field day with what she described as “hurts to look at” sunburns because they weren’t allowed to put on sunscreen.
Michener said it was raining in the morning so she didn’t put sunscreen on the girls before they left, but even if she had, she noted that they would still have had to reapply it at some point. And there’s the rub– apparently, teachers are not allowed to put sunscreen on students in Washington, and kids can only put it on themselves if they have a doctor’s note.
Michener wrote her own account of what happened on her blog, after explaining that she is particularly irritated because one of her daughters has a documented form of Albinism that makes her extra sensitive to the sun:
…after seeing the kids upon returning home from work, I immediately went to the school to speak with the principal. Her response centered around the the [school's] inability to administer what they considered a prescription/medication (sunscreen) for liability reasons. And while I can sort of wrap my brain around this in theory, the practice of a blanket policy which clearly allows for students to be put in harm’s way is deeply flawed. Not only does a parent have to take an unrealistic (an un-intuitive) step by visiting a doctor for a “prescription” for an over-the-counter product, children are not allowed to carry it on their person and apply as needed. Had my children gone to school slathered in sunscreen (which they did not, it was raining), by noon – when the sun came out – they would have needed to reapply anyway. Something as simple as as sun hat might seem to bypass the prescription issue to some extent. Alas, hats are not allowed at school, even on field day.
My children indicated that several adults commented on their burns at school, including staff and other parents. One of my children remarked that their teacher used sunscreen in her presence and that it was “just for her.” So, is this an issue of passive, inactive supervision? Where is the collective awareness for student safety? If they were getting stung by bees, teachers would remove them. Staff need to be awake to possible threats or safety issues and be able to take action. Prolonged sun exposure leads to burns: either put sunscreen on or, at the very least, remove the child from the sun. A simple call would have brought me to that school in minutes to assist my kids.
Common sense missing + fear of being sued = my kids pay the price. Not okay. [Emphasis added]
ABC has more information on the story, and on which states have similar regulations:
Though the pictures clearly relate some of the damage, Michener said that the following days were even worse, once the girls’ faces started blistering and they became generally miserable.
“I’m out to change policy that ties [the school's] hands from making good decisions,” Michener wrote.
The school district has since apologized and informed Michener that a new law “[allows] for districts to make their own distinctions about what is and isn’t allowed at school with regard to sunscreen and other over-the-counter medications” and that school policy should be revised by October.

Posted on June 24, 2012 at 8:34pmWhen my daughter is out weather its soccer, swimming, or any other sports, she knows she has to put it on. When they have field trips normally parents attend also. Like chaperones! Where are the parents and why couldn’t they have put it on themselves? My daughters about to turn 10 and she knows that you have to keep reaplying it. Thats mine and her mothers job to teach them that. Yes the school teacher should have seen and known they were burnt. She could have asked them to borrow sunscreen or anything other than let them be burnt. This is foolishness and the teacher should be fired and the admin need to be held accountable for it. But the parents are also to blame. Teach your kids to be prepaired for the worse and exspect the best. If I see other kids and their starting to get pink, I’ll ask them if they have sunscreen on. If not I’ll let them borrow some. But some sunscreens cause allergic reactions and can also burn people. Most of it comes down to parents knowing and watching out. If I were a teacher I would have asked them if they had sunscreen, if not I would have called their parents before they were burned!….. This could effect them for the rest of their lives. My mom was burned really bad when she was young and she cant hardly stand to be in the sun now!….

Posted on June 24, 2012 at 8:52pmWhen I grew up there was no such thing as sunscreen and no one got a sun burn.
Why?
Because we were outside a lot and not sitting in front of a computer all the time. I was a Lifeguard for two summers, had no sunscreen and never got a sunburn. And my skin is just fine.
If Children were allowed to be Children and to play outside; a sudden and rare exposure to the Sun would never happen.

Posted on June 24, 2012 at 8:53pmDocGreen you didn’t read the entire article. The girls had sunscreen but the law forbids them from applying it to themselves without a doctor’s note. Not only were they forbidden from “self-medicating” themselves with sunscreen but the school staff didn‘t bother to call the girls’ mother so she could “medicate” them with sunscreen.

Posted on June 24, 2012 at 11:14pmMaybe I missed it, but from what I read, the girls never had it with them. It sounds like they weren’t allowed to have it at school, and the school wasn’t allowed to put it on. Its lose, lose situation. Even if it was against school policy I would have instructed my girls to apply it themselves! Screw the School system and if ya ask me everyone of those teachers and or administration people need to have their liscences revoked!….. How can they be accountable for the other kids if they can’t even take care of this. I would be so P.O. that I would pull my kids from that school! The board needs to fire all of them! But more than likely, they probably all have 10yr! Question for everyone; if the school doesn’t allow it, why did other teachers and parents that were there have it and apply it? Somethings not right. So the teachers can apply their own sun screen but the kids can’t? Someones lying and it sounds like the teachers and admin were able to use it. So why couldn’t the kids if they had it? Its a lie, otherwise the teachers shouldn’t have been allowed to wear it also! Maybe it says that they cant but then I would ask them why the teachers and other parents were allowed to apply it? People come on use your Brains, if all else fails a simple phone call prior to them getting burned would have solved everything. I still say the admin, and the teachers need to be fired for this! If they cant watch a few kids, they shouldn’t be teaching!…..

The only thing on TV I wanted to see was on from 6am to 7am on Saturday morning. Cartoons. I drank (and made) Kool-Aid (with 1 whole cup of sugar!) as a child. We burned the calories almost faster than we consumed them. There was not one single fat kid in my neighborhood, and nobody had Asthma. Monk, you are exactly right. They are all sitting inside on their duffs. I didn’t allow my children TV or video games. They played outside. They built forts, played hide and seek, swam. I got validation from a neighbor a couple of streets over. She saw me on my front patio and stopped to tell me my kids reminded her of her youth. They were the only ones in the neighborhood she ever saw OUTSIDE! My youngest is now sixteen. Those of you with young kids, BUILD YOUR COMMUNITY! Know your neighbors, all the way down your street. Posted on June 25, 2012 at 11:59am@The Monk @Doctor Nordo @Spikebu and all of you:
Here’s a bit of history for sun screen.
- The first effective sunscreen was developed by chemist Franz Greiter in 1938
- The first widely used sunscreen was produced by Benjamin Green, an airman and later a pharmacist, in 1944
- This product was developed during the height of World War II, when it was likely that the hazards of sun overexposure were becoming apparent to soldiers in the Pacific and to their families at home
- Franz Greiter is credited with introducing the concept of sun protection factor (SPF) in 1962
Now, do we need to have a discussion on melanin and how it varies from one genetic make-up to another? Or how about we discuss albinos (and back to melanin) and their lack of protection from the sun?
I know that I was only born in 1972, but I am of Irish and Italian decent, so I know about dark skin that burns. And, yes, in the 70s there was sun screen and I was either wearing that stuff or was blistering. A burn is a burn, no matter how much time you keep your hand in th flame.

Wrong. The advent of spf did not mark the start of sunscreen. Spf is only a gauge whereby the effectiveness of sunscreen is measured. It‘s like saying that the automobile didn’t exist before the incorporation of the speedometer.
Red Petroleum Jelly was a sunscreen that was invented in world war two that became the basis of Coppertone’s sunscreen formula in the 50s.

A brief history of Coppertone® (and suncare!)
During WWII, an airman and future pharmacist named Benjamin Green helped develop a sun protective formula for soldiers. In 1944, Airman Green used his invention as the basis for Coppertone® Suntan Cream.
As the story goes, Airman Green concocted the cocoa butter mixture on his wife’s stove (hopefully, with Mrs. Green’s blessing!) and tested it on his own bald head. Little did he know that would be the first of many firsts for Coppertone® – in this case, the first consumer suncare product!
65 years of solar thinking
For more than 65 years, sun protection has been our number one priority. Since the launch of the first Coppertone® sunscreen, we’ve been committed to developing high-quality, easy-to-apply suncare products that provide every member of the family with effective sunburn protection, every day.

Wrong! There are two (at least) cures. In fact the other is much more effective than the first: STOP SENDING CHILDREN into the greedy grasp of the power-hungry bureaucrats and politicians. If they do not have children to indoctrinate into the mental condition known as dependent socialism, they can’t hurt them, and they cannot justify the levees and taxes they now demand (at the point of a gun) we pay for the privilege of having our children divorced from us and our mores.
> Stop voting yes for school levies, and stop voting for the Dems
It’s not just Dems (although I agree that it’s mostly Democrats).

Exactly. STOP SENDING YOUR PRECIOUS TO THE GOVERNMENT TO BE “EDUCATED”. In the end, it’s your fault because YOU made the CHOICE to “render unto Caesar”. In my view, anyone whose children are in a government-run, tax-funded welfare school is guilty of “over rendering” (in the words of the late Marshall Fritz).

History tells us that Virginia had a law on the books to HANG every ‘lawyer’ who accepted that title of nobility from the crown – obviously, the pope ‘convinced’ the well-intentioned patriots to ‘reconsider.’ btw – jefferson was opposed to ‘slavery,’ — va had a law that prohibited the slave OWNERS from ‘freeing’ them… least that’s the rumor… (One ring to Find them, One ring to Bring them, One ring to Bind them in the darkness of their ignorance…–fitting)

Posted on June 24, 2012 at 10:00pmYou are absolutely right, CHIPS1. If you want your child to be properly cared for, do not turn them over to the state to be raised. I am a former teacher, and I’m homeschooling mine. I will not leave the care of my child to a government worker. They will not have to stand before God some day and answer for her upbringing, I will. I’m the one who will deal with her every boo-boo, bump, sunburn, sick stomach, headache, pimple, and what have you, not the school district. I will not have my child sent home to me in this condition for me to deal with it. Raising her is my job, and I’ll do it. If you don’t want your child cared for this callously, don’t give them to the state.

[ the teachers ] We need to teach more critical thinking skills in schools . My Granddaughter goes to a Charter school and they have some really GREAT teachers [ we live in Arizona ] When the kids go outside they play under a large tent, and if needed the teachers will help the kids apply sunscreen, the parents supply it of course. And they also say the pledge every morning.

Posted on June 24, 2012 at 7:37pmThose are my sentiments. Find the the democrat union idiots who put the guidelines in place, stake ‘em in the sun ’til they’re dehydrated and suffering from 3rd degree burns, and then horsewhip them when they go for the sunscreen. If you think I’m kidding, I’m not. These people need to feel a little wrath. I’d like to be the one to administer it. Seriously, I think they should really take those teachers and administrators to court and sue them for everything they’re worth.

We have been led to believe that everything we do is wrong and we cant think for ourselves, so the government and anyone in any sort of athoritive possition knows whats good for us better than we do .Everyone start standing up for yourselves use your head and show some back bone. Or things are just going to keep getting worse. Take care of your children the way you believe is right. Start speaking up and speaking out. This is america lets show others what we are made of, whoever it may be. Stand up and be proud of the way you live your life.

Posted on June 24, 2012 at 6:45pmThe article mentions a State Law and says Washington, so it’s pretty clear that it is Washington State, better known as the People’s Soviet Socialist Utopia of Washington, under the dictatorship of “Queen Christine” Gregoire, and the Democrats, who rule everything here.
Everything, that is, except Freedom and Common Sense.

Posted on June 24, 2012 at 8:52pmI have to agree with FREE to some extent. This story could backfire on this parent. There have been stories like this where the parent faced endangerment charges for letting their child get so burnt. Bottom line, she, the Mom did not prepare her children for a day in the sun. I don’t care that it was raining in the AM, that is typical on the West Coast at that time of year. What is she going to try and sue the weatherman for not stating, “light showers turning to sunny by noon.” The story would be much different if she provided the sunscreen and the kids were not allowed to apply themselves or to carry with them as she mentioned. The law she claims is lame, but she did not even take the precautions. Not to mention that there is spray sunscreen, where the applier does not need to touch the kid.

Posted on June 24, 2012 at 8:26pmYes, all kinds of problems can be solved with by home schooling your kids. The most common response we’ve received from parents against homeschooling is “They’ll miss out on socialization”. Exactly! That is one of the most important reasons TO homeschool. We get to have more control over the major influences in their lives and that’s important when you want to instill your values in your children. A sunburn is relatively minor in comparison to all the other things that can happen to and influence them when their minds are like little sponges. Think about how their souls can be “sunburned” by what they are taught at a public school nowadays.

Posted on June 24, 2012 at 6:59pmThat’s why Zombies are so popular today. It it the model to which the Democratic controlled education system aspires. First, eliminate any possibility of developing critical thinking skills. Then begin working on eliminating basic logic and reasoning skills. When that is achieved, rid the kids of common sense. At that point they are putty for indoctrination imprinting. When measured by these goals, the Democrat’s education system has been extremely successful, especially with the children of other liberals who have no basic of reference at home for rational thinking… you can tell this simply by reading their posts almost anywhere on the web.
