Study: All Major News Outlets Have Left-Leaning Bias that ‘Distorts’ Minds

Story Highlights:
- UCLA political scientist Dr. Tim Groseclose pens new book about liberal media bias
- Groseclose claims he has scientifically proven that mainstream outlets are biased
- Liberal media bias, he says, impacts Americans’ perspectives on important issues
Charges of media bias have existed for years. Explicit examples — and there are many — showcase journalists’ inability to hide personal perspective. But, are the mainstream media biased on the whole? Many would answer affirmatively.
In America, conservatives tend to believe that national outlets favor Democratic candidates and politicians over their Republican counterparts. But, can this be proven? UCLA political scientist Dr. Tim Groseclose says “yes.”
In his new book, Left Turn — How Liberal Media Bias Distorts the American Mind, Groseclose not only sets out to showcase that the media are biased, but he also seeks to expose the profound influence liberal bias has had on the American public. Below, CBN sheds light on some of his findings:
- All mainstream news outlets in the United States have a liberal bias.
- The Drudge Report is the most fair, balanced and centrist news outlet in the United States.
- Fox News’ “Special Report,” which is usually characterized as conservative, is not biased as far right as typical mainstream outlets are biased to the left.
Below, watch Groseclose discuss his research:
Last week, the political scientist also appeared in an interview with Fox News’ Lou Dobbs to discuss this important subject. During the interview, he said, “If you’re looking for bias, you’re not going to find it in false statements…the way that the media perpetrates bias is usually in what they don’t report.” Watch his comments, below:
Groseclose also recently took to The Washington Times opinion page to both explain and defend his research:
For the past several years, I have researched this question, trying to solve the following thought experiment: What if media bias were suddenly to disappear? In such a world, how would America look and act politically?
The answer is, approximately like Texas.
More specifically, if media bias were to disappear, according to the analysis, then America would think and vote like any region that voted around 56-43 percent for Republican John McCain in the last presidential election. Besides Texas, such regions include Kansas, North Dakota, Kentucky, Salt Lake County, Utah, and Orange County, Calif.
That the media has such an influence is a strong claim but is backed up by the science.
You can read the rest of his opinion piece here.
One of the main expectations of American media is that journalists can and will remain non-partisan and objective in their coverage of events, political campaigns and the like. Over the years, though, Republicans and conservatives have claimed that this hasn’t been the case. They point to a number of examples to back up their bias claims.
There was the 2004 controversy involving CBS’s Dan Rather and George W. Bush’s faux military documents. Back in June we reported on CNN Money‘s Jeanne Sahadi and her article calling those opposed to raising the debt ceiling “wingnuts.” And, of course, there was the media’s alleged favorable treatment of candidate Obama during the 2008 campaign.
While there are arguments to be made that these instances, among others, constitute bias, each simply serves as an anecdotal example. Unfortunately, anecdotal happenings don’t necessarily reflect what is occurring across the board. Thus, using a few examples to say that the media are all liberally-biased is not valid. To make such a claim one — like Groseclose — must undertake scientific research. Interestingly, he has done just that.
Groseclose concludes his op-ed with the following words: “It’s time the public wakes up. Media bias is more significant, complex and pernicious than people realize.” Regardless of where one stands on the level of media bias present in mainstream outlets, Groseclose’s trumpet call for a more informed and curious public is certainly a healthy quest. After all, knowing how the information we consume is crafted helps us better comprehend complex issues.

Posted on August 1, 2011 at 12:33pmKind of interesting, and a confirmation of what I have long suspected, a further left bias than I had imagined. I took the PQ test on his site ( Link: http://timgroseclose.com/calculate-your-pq/ ) and I scored a 17%, with 0 being hard right. I wonder if the MSM will coment on this?

You are dead on, this is where the attention should be on this “study”. How fast the radical left will respond and attack this guy? Maybe he should do a study on how quickly they attack anyone who speaks out against them, either way you all know one thing it proves… That we are all right about them and his study is in stone! :)
Who cares though its just words if they do whine and attack let them I dont care and neither should you. The more we react and engage them the more power we give them. Do not engage the left, instead continue the ambushes and hit-and-runs then be silent on the issue when they fire back! This will enrage them that their attacks are not being returned

Report Post »We need to hold accountable those in the media that purport to report the “news” by holding them to the “Journalist Oath of Standards Act”. If violated, they will be banned from reporting for a minimum of two years. Blatant omission of key news events will fall under this oath as well. Commentary – all forms (including couching it within a question) – must be kept separate and clearly labeled as such.

Posted on August 1, 2011 at 1:37pm“Left Turn” by Professor Tim looks interesting, but I really, really don’t need a study to tell me how the Liberals think and vote. They are against normal people, against independence, against freedom, and keep naming everything they kept us hostage for. Merely because most of we rational people believe in the Constitution, the Bill of Rights and Freedom within the United States of America.
Couldn’t believe he was at UCLA, but I agree with him completely. These Liberals and RINO’s are ruining America so everyone will get on board with the Communist beliefs and Marxist beliefs and anything that is against America as we know it. I don’t trust many in politics, but I truly cannot stand

“And in other news, UCLA scientist Dr. Groseclose has been sacked.”
That’s not far-fetched at all. When CBS found out that Bernard Goldberg was writing a book on media bias they said they would fire him if he published it. Goldberg, a life-long democrap and 20 year reporter for CBS, published ‘BIASED’ and they fired him. He followed ‘BIASED’ up with another book on media bias: ‘ARROGANT’.

It is in their “nature” to flap their gums about issues instead of being part of the productive class that actually solves issues via innovation, investment, and capital formation. Posted on August 1, 2011 at 2:37pmSo, I’m taking his PQ quiz right now, and yes, he should be fired. This is one of the worst surveys to gauge political ideology I could think of. The quiz basically just asks if you would have voted one way or the other on a series of legislative bills (oh and don’t worry, if you change you’re mind he usually asks the same exact question at least twice – sometimes even with a note saying it’s the same question). This just ignores any discussion of the underlying issues as to *why* a person would vote against or for these bills.
Then he includes the Dem and Rep votes for each bill. You know, so your self-identification can just get in the way (a great way to produce dirty, dirty data). In 20 he specifically mentions which would be the liberal way of voting. In 21, he gives you no option to oppose the bill but support the closing of guantamo. In 26, all the information he gives you is there was a confirmation vote on Sotomayor, D’s voted this way, R’s voted this way. And question 34 is just wrong. It says Warren was named to head the CFPA (which is not what it’s actually called) in a recess appointment. That didn’t happen. She isn’t the head of the CFPB (the correct acronym).
Let alone the politician’s similar PQ results – I’d say is complete bunk.

Posted on August 1, 2011 at 12:54pmYou’re correct that most of the media ownership is conservative, however, I think the liberal bias is born out of another root cause.
Most of the audience of mass media prefers to be spoon fed their news, and is intellectually lazy. Being generally quicker to embrace the utopian ideals of the liberals, the watchers, listeners and readers of mass media seldom think deeply enough to realize that Utopia and Human Nature cannot coexist . . . the pragmatic view of conservatives, that we are better off striving for self-imposed order, is far more enlightened, and because of its perceived simplicity, is regarded by liberals as ignorant, and not enlightened at all.
Mass media embraces the Utopian goals because those are easiest for their lemming audience to understand and embrace, thus maximizing the size of their audience. Unless and until that audience challenges the media messages on a broader basis than it does today, the media output will remain unchanged.

They believe in Capitalism as long as it makes them money, but don’t want anyone else to have any money. They believe there is a limited supply of money and too many people to share it with. Furthermore, my Progressive friends and family think if the debt ceiling is not raised Social Security checks will not go out, Tax Credits = Tax Cuts, Paul Ryan’s budget will affect seniors TODAY (instead only those under 55), Revenue is NOT the same thing as Taxes, the Republicans have controlled the House of Representatives for the last 10-15 years, and Barack Obama is their secular Messiah while George Bush is their secular Satan.

Posted on August 1, 2011 at 12:08pmLets not forget that it is not only these main-stream outlets news programing, it is also all of their Movies, Soaps, Prime-Time Shows, Sit-Coms, Commercials, etc., that indoctrinate the masses. It is not just the NEWS programming that is Biased.

Posted on August 1, 2011 at 12:20pmWake up. The Marxists have taken over our educational system and media. Discovery, History Channel has been slanted to their propaganda. The Movies have been doing it for years. It’s now a war of attrition. Just like Hitler did with the Hitler Jugen, these Commies have done with our children, using ‘social’ rights, green energy. Remember when Al Gore told the kids, don’t listen to your parents. Even technology is entrapping people. Google, Facebook and others are tracking tools. And they thought the Gestapo was good.

Report Post »And don’t think for a second that the “other side” has not completed (or forged) its own similar study indicating how biased the very media we call left leaning, they call right leaning, is. It remains crucial to not allow the wool to be pulled over our eyes AT ALL TIMES and turn up our sensitivity to BS whenever and wherever we encounter it. It is imperative to use all sources for news today not just the ones that we find agreeable most of the time.

Posted on August 1, 2011 at 12:39pmYeah pretty much gave up on Hollywood years ago……They’re tools for the elite socialist progressive
Report Post »watched V for vendetta and 2/3 through the story they finally said the tyrannical government was the conservative. But if you look in real society 90% of all laws that intrude on people’s personal freedom are written and passed under liberal progressive and liberal progressive are the party that want the government to control every little aspect of society Conservative are the opposite wanting less government more freedom. That was the last time I ever spent money to see anything at the threater.
I still watch the occassional movie for free but Hollywood got their last dollar from me that day.

Posted on August 1, 2011 at 2:22pmAll one needs to know is that conservatives are for allowing citizens to own firearms and leftists aren’t. That tells it all.
Fear a politician, political party, or government, that fears an armed citizenry.

Don’t look for any future funding for studies like this, Mr. Groseclose.
You will be silenced.
