Study: Cloning Technique Creates Human Embryos and Stem Cells

The journal Nature announced today that scientists using cloning techniques were able to create a line of human stem cells that were derived from early-stage human embryos.

Scientists Create Embryos With Three Sets of Chromosomes Using Cloning TechniquesIn traditional cloning, an adult egg is used and its one set of chromosomes removed. Then, two sets of chromosomes  are inserted into the egg. With technique, the same that created Dolly in 1996, scientists found it nearly impossible to get human cells to divide more than a few times. But, according to Nature, scientists from the New York Stem Cell Foundation Laboratory found that leaving the egg’s DNA in tact and inserting the additional two sets of chromosomes produced an embryo that they carried to the blastocyst (70 to 100 cell stage).

A blastocyst can be a source of embryonic stem cells.

This means that the embryos the scientists created had three sets of chromosomes and would never be viable even if implanted in a womb. The stem cells derived from this embryo are also not compatible for uses in curing disease or spinal cord injuries.

The Wall Street Journal reports that this is the closest science has come to cloning humans since 2004:

[...] a Korean scientist who claimed to have created the first human embryonic clone and derived a stem-cell line from it. That work was shown to be fraudulent. While the latest study doesn’t claim the same dramatic breakthrough that the 2004 experiment did, it is likely to spark controversy because it involves potential human cloning and embryo destruction.

“It’s an early research step… towards curing devastating diseases,” said Dieter Egli of the New York Stem Cell Foundation Laboratory in New York City and a co-author of the study, which pointedly doesn’t use the word “cloning” to describe the results. “We really don‘t know how hard it’s going to be” to eliminate the extra set of chromosomes.

Scientists continue to try a variety of techniques to remove the egg’s DNA and still create a viable embryo. Robert Lanza, chief scientific officer at Advanced Cell Technology, a company based in Santa Monica, California, said to Nature that he believes the problem with removing the egg’s chromosomes lies with removal of the spindle apparatus, which is required for cell division:

“Unlike in some other species, these are critical for an embryo to continue to divide. That’s the problem, and that‘s why human cloning hasn’t worked to date,” he says.

Although the scientists were successful at creating human embryos using cloning techniques, it still is an inefficient process. Only 13 embryos were created from 270 eggs. The Daily Telegraph reports that the eggs used in this study were from women who were paid $8,000, which it notes is close to the same amount egg donors receive from in-vitro clinics.

This study was privately funded.

      Hey TIM LAW, not understanding why you chose Proverb 4: 14- 17, great scripture verses, as is ALL of God’s Word, just don’t see the connection with this News article. Unless, it is to say that creating human embryos is through this process of cloning is evil and or wicked, and it very well may be ? However Research in and of itself is not evil, nor wicked, man is natural curious, and have endeavored to explore, research, and strive to know and understand more about our surroundings, the earth , seas & heavens, that God has given us, and or rather placed in our life.
      Anyway, still a great verse, and I would add to that Psalm 1, “Blessed is the man……”

      Black Manta, what on Earth are you talking about? Where do you get the idea that I don‘t know what I’m talking about? I know full well the story of Babel. My point is that post-flood, God saw the potential of man to accomplish anything he put his mind to. In modern times, we have overcome language barriers to a large degree, and we are becoming more and more a global community. And, “As it was in the days of Noah, so shall it be at the coming of the Son of Man.” Do some homework on how it was in the days of Noah, and then compare that to what science is trying to do now. The return of the Nephilim is, I think, something that is being actively worked toward even now.

      Just because you don‘t understand what I’m saying doesn‘t mean I don’t know what I’m talking about. I believe the Bible says exactly what it means, so when it says, “now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do,” that means precisely what is written. The marriage of science and the occult may unleash upon the Earth horrors most of us cannot even imagine. Pray you aren’t here to see it.

    I wonder how many people are opposed to this because it’s “playing god” but still support the death penalty. The same can be said for medical care. Someone trips, cracks their head open and starts to bleed to death. Aren’t we “playing god” if we stop the bleeding and save their life with technology? It’s just a very convoluted argument to make.

      This is the “creation” of human life to be used and discarded.

      You might not think that if these clones grow up and don’t have souls. This is unnatural, and very unfair to these clones.They may very well be able to clone a body…but do you really think that they can clone a soul? That is YWVH’s territory. Yeshuah healed the sick, the blind, and cast out demons. There are many people on this earth who are children of Satan. That was their choice. God knew us all from the foundations of the world. He said there were those created for mercy and those created for destruction. THe ones created for destruction to show the children of mercy just how merciful He is. When you go to playing God..there are dire consequences. As for the death penalty, the only reason that I am against that is because justice does not always prevail and there are and have been many innocent “victims of the law ,” locked up and executed. Our justice system is filled with imperfect desensitized people and many of them just want a conviction, no matter how innocent a person may be. It just becomes the easiest shmuck they can convict. But they are playing with humans lives here. You might just have some very angry clones there or even worse..clones with no soul, no emotion, but with a very capable body. This is getting a little too much like the twilight zone.

    Government funded embryonic stem cell research is nothing more than white collar welfare. The private sector abandoned the research in favor of ADULT stem cells which are much more cost effective, avoid auto-immunity complications, avoid the ethical questions of cloning and destroying human embryos, and yield better results. Once their funding was cut these embryonic scientists turned to the government for funding. Even if embryonic stem cell research yields anything it will not be viable in the market as it will be cost prohibitive, and adult stem cell research will likely accomplish the same task at a fraction of the price with a fraction of the side effects.

Besides correctly illustrating the LDS teachings that God was once a mere mortal man, (a false teaching I will declare.. according to Genesis 1), and that man eventually will be as gods According (man’s thinking) to LDS theology (man’s religion) eternal life is synonymous with godhood.       Just so you’ll know that the LDS, teaches the doctrine of devils , it is earthly NOT Heavenly, from the powers of darkness, part of Satan’s snare to entangle men in a lie.     It will also ensure that insest and genetic mutations are going to run rampant through Nations that do this… who would NOT want the finest genes put into their child? think about it, everyone is going to have the same genes. same genes = family. there is going to be one family (Surname) left on the planet if this goes on.       Wow. That has to be one of the most uninformed and paranoid thing i’ve ever read. I really don’t have enough space to go into the fallacies of your concern (or to even explain the basic concept of genetics) but I can tell you with certainty that your fears will not be realized. Evolution is sexual selection which happens regardless of the genes you pump into embryos. Genes mutate all the time, you could never create a human race with the same genetics. We would all have mutant, sickly children (why do you think you can’t have kids with your siblings? see “similar genetics”) that would die before they’re born.
      Please, people. PLEASE EDUCATE YOURSELVES BEFORE TALKING ABOUT THINGS THAT ARE IMPORTANT. Thanks.

      Ever driven through a cloud of “love bugs” in Florida? They were created in a college lab and were supposed to control mosquitoes or something and they weren’t supposed to be able to reproduce. Low and behold they now swarn in the millions and can entirely clog a radiator in one pass, not to mention they can black out a windshield.

      Love bugs weren’t created. The male stays attached to the female to ensure that only his sperm fertilizes her eggs. Lots of sexual competition exist in the insect world. Some bugs have a penis-like appendage that are able to scrap out sperm from a previous suitora before depositing his own. Other species have females that take on as much sperm as possible from different males to ensure genetic diversity among her offspring. The male love bug has evolved his own method of ensuring his genes go on.

The whole world has the moral obligation to preserve a safe world without clones from that couple.     Read “The Seven Daughter’s of Eve” by Brian Sykes. Awesome book on the story of human genetics, and one man’s breakthrough career. At the end you will find him disillusioned with Big Pharma, as lawyers and corrupt businessmen collude with scientists to PATENT human genetics.

    Nothing is sacred to these people.
