Study: Expectant Mothers Shouldn’t Go Low-Fat With Yogurt

Moms-t0-be may be looking to control excess weight gain with lower fat dairy products, but a recent study is showing that the fatty acids in the higher-fat versions have benefits for the child.

Eating Low Fat Yogurt in Pregnancy Increases Asthma and Hay Fever Allergy Risk in Children

Researchers set out to find whether fatty acids found in dairy products could protect against the development of allergic diseases in children. It did, but not when it was low-fat yogurt with fruit. Low-fat yogurt with fruit was found to actually increase the child’s risk for developing asthma and hay fever.

Science Daily has more:

[...] women who ate low-fat yogurt with fruit once a day were 1.6-times more likely to have children who developed asthma by age 7, compared with children of women who reported no intake. They were also more likely to have allergic rhinitis [hay fever] and to display current asthma symptoms.

The researchers suggest that non-fat related nutrient components in the yogurt may play a part in increasing this risk. They are also looking at the possibility that low-fat yogurt intake may serve as a marker for other dietary and lifestyle factors.

Ekaterina Maslova, lead author from the Harvard School of Public Health, who has been working with data at the Centre for Fetal Programming at Statens Serum Institut, said: “This is the first study of its kind to link low-fat yogurt intake during pregnancy with an increased risk of asthma and hay fever in children. This could be due to a number of reasons and we will further investigate whether this is linked to certain nutrients or whether people who ate yogurt regularly had similar lifestyle and dietary patterns which could explain the increased risk of asthma.”

According to BBC, results from the study were derived from 70,000 Danish women and following their children’s development until the age of seven.

PLEASE read up on chronic acidosis as the true culprit by searching the ‘Articles of Health’ blogsite of Dr. Robert Young. Dairy of any type is among the worst acid loaded foods to the body for anyone. Chronic acidosis will lead to the body alkalizing by cannibalizing the bones for minerals (normally found in dark leafy veggies… Daniel’s diet in the book of Daniel of Scripture to not only keep kosher but to restore and heal the body before their return back to the Land of Israel) by using the ammonia from the bloodstream (uric acid ~ before it becomes urine in the kidneys) to extract the minerals (the real cause of osteoporosis) and then the ammonia travels through the blood to the lungs to be expelled via respiration. Obviously this is not oxygen nor carbon dioxide and is recognized by the body as dangerous ~ the lungs constrict to limit the damage & viola = asthma, allergic reactions, hay fever.

Check out: Dr. Young’s Research Validated – Fruit Sugars Cause Pancreatic Cancer Wednesday, August 04, 2010 at http://articlesofhealth.blogspot.com/2010/08/fructose-causes-pancreatic-cancer.html

    Also:
    Excerpts from Alkalize or Die:

ACIDOSIS is the basic foundation of all disease. We need to understand the simple process of alkalizing our body and the important role a properly alkalized body plays in restoring and maintaining our overall health. Our glands and organs function properly in exact proportion to the amount of alkaline and acid levels in our system.

Truth is, a low-fat/non-fat diet is bad for everyone, not just pregnant woman. Read GOOD CALORIES, BAD CALORIES for a great exposition on how the government has skewed the data to favor this unsubstantiated belief that dietary fat is somehow the cause of all ills–through its funding programs. A low-carbohydrate diet is still the best choice for maintaining a healthy weight and avoiding a raft of health problems including, but not limited to, diabetes, heart disease, alzheimers, and cancer.

It is still widely believed that saturated fat is bad for you; it is a big lie. Coconut and palm oils are some of the best fats available. As a matter of fact, Coconut oil is one of the few natural sources of the beneficial Lauric Acid. Another source? — human breast milk.

You need healthy fats in your diet for a fully functioning brain. You do NOT need carbohydrates for any reason as they are not essential to life. The problem is that people eat transfats or fat combined with sugar. Want to get really healthy? Go on a High healthy fat, low carbohydrate, moderate protein diet…AKA a Paleolithic diet for ultimate health…Stop eating grains and starchy foods or die an early death…

BTW I have lost 170 pounds, kept it off for 6 years and no longer a Diabetic… The ADA sucks!

Glucose is THE fuel for your brain- you do need some carbs. God made us with incisors to eat meat and molars to grind grain and other plant foods; we are designed as omnivores and we don’t do as well when we fight this.

Yeah…Pasteurization couldn’t possibly cause any of the problems. Go back the marketing trail, having the Bernaise model in mind. The truth is strikingly clear.

I think the point is that today’s science will change tomorrow and honestly, these things are often more politically motivated than economically motivated. Trace most of the so-called “health science” industry and you’ll see that though corporations may play a part, usually that money is bolstered or overwhelmed by money from the NIH or one of the many “non-profits” connected with the government.

I have lived long enough to remember when grains went from the top of the food pyramid (eat least) to the bottom (eat more) and have seen pretty much every food group or item demonized (unless it’s sale benefited some third world country). What this study says is “remember, these are the people who told us to give up butter for margarine!”

ESSENTIAL FATTY ACIDS from meat/dairy/egg proteins are ESSENTIAL for our bodies!

(I posted a somewhat long post under the smoking/obesity topic that has “disappeared” somewhere. . . concerning the fact that smoking and obesity is a symptom–the CAUSE is eating more calories than used! Also talked about the link between carbs and diabetes–won’t be discussed by ADA or heart/vacular sciences as they are owned by the phamacuetical industry! Proper low carbing can “normalize” sugar in the bloodstream and cause good weight loss without starving!)

Whole milk much healthier! “Low fat” should still have sugrose in it (milk sugar), if it is replaced with eather HFC (high fructuse corn syrup for taste), or alternative sweeteners it could be a risk.

Check out REAL “Greek” yogurt like Chobani–plain has only milk in it!

How ’bout those recombinant hormones in the dairy?!?!? Or perhaps the corn syrup in the fruit that is made from genetically modified corn?!?!? And yes, the full fat version has things your body/baby needs….

The concept that a low-fat philosophy is good for health and weight loss has been thoroughly debunked. Yes, there is such a thing as bad fats (primarily those created through human-generated processing methods and cooking), but almost all fats in their natural form are not only good for consumption but essential for health.

Not only does our body need fats in their natural form, but removing fats from foods actually impedes our body’s ability to digest those foods, as fats stimulate bile production in the liver and gallbladder. The lack of that bile means that foods are not digested properly, at the very least leading to a deficiency of healthy benefits from that food, and also possibly leading to negative benefits to one’s health.

Dairy should be consumed in the exact form in which it comes out of the cow. Removing the cream, further removing the fat to make low-fat products, pasteurization, etc. all interfere with our body’s ability to digest dairy properly.

Lowering the fat also leaves the dairy product hormonally imbalanced with more androgens than estrogens. A longitudinal study with a group of nurses found that those who ate at least one serving of full-fat dairy a week had more reliable ovulation than those who did not and were more likely to get pregnant when trying than the others.

I agree that the runny yoplait stuff is crap. Its full of sugar too, even if it says its not. I eat plain low fat Fage greek yogurt. If I want fruit I add real fruit, that I chop up or blend before mixing it in. But the funny thing is, when I first started eating plain greek yogurt I hated it, wasnt sweet enough. Now, if I eat any yogurt with fruit in it, it just tastes sugary and I cant stand it.

In other words they don’t know what the correlation is, maybe its the yogurt, maybe its not.
