Study Finds Vast Majority of American Jews Still Plan to Vote for Obama In November

Study: Vast Majority of American Jews Still Plan to Vote for Obama In NovemberThere’s no question that President Barack Obama has fielded some tough questions regarding his support — and perceived lack thereof — for the Israeli state and the Jewish people.

But, despite allegations that he has lost favor among American Jews, a new poll from the Public Religion Research Institute seems to indicate that Obama is poised to, once again, capture the majority of this cohort come November.

In September, we reported that the president was beginning to ramp up his outreach to Jewish donors and supporters. With strategist Dick Morris, among others, warning about an Obama-Jewish implosion, this tactic made perfect political sense. In the months that followed, the president reiterated — at least rhetorically — his support for Israel, even going on to claim that he’s “done more for the security of the state of Israel than any previous administration.”

Some conservative Jews, though, have maintained that the man who was able to secure 78 percent of the Jewish vote in 2008 is a “train wreck” and a “con man.” There was even a film, produced by the Emergency Committee for Israel, attacking Obama’s record on Israel. And earlier this month, we reported that some major 2008 donors have been giving monies to Republican contender Mitt Romney (not a good sign for the president by any measure).

But despite the challenges, it hasn’t been all bad for Obama when it comes to relating to Jewish Americans. After all, The Jewish Forward added him to their list of the year’s most influential…Jews (our reporting on this can be found here). New York Magazine even wondered back in September if he’s the first Jewish president. Now, a PRRI poll is claiming that the president is poised, despite criticism, to capture the majority of Jewish voters this November.

The Jewish Forward has more:

For President Obama and the Jews, it’s starting to look like 2008 all over again.

A new survey of Jews shows 62% plan to vote for the president, roughly similar to where he stood at this time four years ago when he went on to garner nearly 80% of the Jewish vote in November.

About 30% of those surveyed in the new Public Religion Research Institute poll said they planned to vote for a Republican, with 17% naming GOP frontrunner Mitt Romney and the rest split between the other three candidates.

Even more importantly, just 7% of Jews who voted for Obama in 2008 now prefer a Republican candidate, indicating Obama does not face a significant fracturing of his Jewish base of support.

All-in-all, the poll found that Jewish Americans are still majority liberal, inclined to support Democrats and very focused on social and economic issues. Israel, at least according to the research, is not a “deciding factor” when it comes to how American Jews vote.

The PRRI poll included 1,004 self-identifying Jews (those who are Jewish by religion, ethnicity or culture) and it had a margin of error of 5 percentage points. Read more about this research over on the Forward.

Interesting theory. Maybe actual Jews know what it’s like to be Jewish better than a bunch of southern and midwestern religious conservatives? It’s funny to me how theoretical “support” for Israel is strongest in the places where there are very few Jews. Actual support for Israel would mean support for the many various perspectives found in the Israeli body politic, most of which do not match up with the views of American religious conservatives.

Or maybe the Jews are so against Christian that they would cut off their nose to spite their face. I dated a Jewish girl once and when her family found out I was Christian they all but disowned her. On the other hand my Baptist family welcomes her with open arms. I broke it off with her even though I really cared about her because I could see how much being alienated from her family was crushing her.

      @Liberal Teacher,

Well your moniker speaks loud about you. It’s not a specific region, we just read the Bible and believe in God’s Word, that’s all.

We also know how to read the news about Barry’s deeds against Israel and her population. We also know how to read history…..perhaps you don’t know about it (Philosophy teacher? Transgender Studies teacher? ) and I fell pity for you, but mostly I fell it for your students.

But please don’t believe me; check this list week by week and the news source related to each headline and learn something about your Dear Leader….

Wow! You have said it better than I ever could have. You are correct, and the reason for the above defined confusion is that so many Americans do not, can not, differentiate between the terms, ethnic Jew, religious Jew (Judaism), and Zionism. .

Reading all the blogs in this site prove that our support for Isreal has resulted in the division at home. I also cannot understand the American Jew and their majority support for a type of system that is closer to tyranny then freedom??? They will be the first to be culled.

Who would have thought? Choosing a Marxist Democrat over Israel. Obama has intentionally damaged the security of Israel by leaking their plans and insulting them. What are these people voting for, gay marriage, crushing debt, atheism, and a dictatorial federal government owned by labor unions? I understand Obama’s appeal to a factory worker who wants more than he is worth, but not a Jew, unless there is a master plan to destroy the economy, buy up the national assets, and make trillions of dollars on the upside.

Funny how quickly “I stand with Israel!” becomes:

“they will deserve it when he starts rounding them up and building new ovens.”
“The poor, deluded fools. They just might be helping oil the machinery for the second Holocaust.”
” I guess the Jews are just natural born victims. At least I can relax and not worry about them anymore.”
“The Jews don’t have a very good track record ..For being right. Prime example …The Crucifixion of CHRIST”
“They will be the first ones eliminated”
“What is in the jewish cultural mind, if we can use that conceit, that is so suicidal?”

… when they vote for someone we don’t like.

I figure all those who “stand with Israel” should amend their slogan to “… unless American Jews vote Democrat. Then they deserve to die.”

Personally, I think they’re supporting an inferior candidate but hey, it’s their choice to be wrong… and seeing how quickly the Jewish “allies” here change their their position makes me think that maybe they see the obvious deceit and are more against fickle friends than pro-Obama. With “friends” like those making these comments, who needs enemies?

@JujuBeeBee Maybe I can make it clearer. Commentators here seem shocked that Jews would vote for Obama even though Obama has, in their opinion, been anti-Israel. They seem to think that Jews misunderstand Obama’s position on Israel.

My suggestion is that maybe Jews understand Obama’s position on Israel just fine, and it‘s the commentators here who don’t understand the Jewish people all that well, despite their sanctimonious pretenses of support for Israel, by which they don’t mean ACTUAL Israel, but a fictional “Israel” where they imagine most people agree with their world-view.

Hitler lied to the people to achieve the impossible. Obama is lying daily. People can vote whatever way they want to. There are a large number of people who are not following what is going on and voting by tradition. This is not a traditional election of republican versus democrat. They can believe it is but are ignoring alot by doing so. Unless the Jewish people understand precisely what the fundamental change is going to be they cannot vote wisely.

It is not the person’s fault when they are a victim. No one said that. You are not being logical. Victims are victims and it is not their fault. “You would have to scroll back really far to find that comment…”

They are word-for-word quotes from posters here in the past hour. All of them are still on the first page of comments (assuming yours is also set up oldest-to-newest, which I believe is default). The words are from posters here.

“People can vote whatever way they want to.”

But of course. And you can easily see how quickly a site that posts pro-Israeli stories quickly becomes a “They deserve it when a Holocaust comes” among the posters if the Jews don’t vote for the “right” party.

“Unless the Jewish people understand precisely what the fundamental change is going to be they cannot vote wisely.”

So in your view, Jews should only vote Republican because of the lip service the party pays to that country? Sounds to me like with every statement you make, your saying that “People can vote whatever way they want to” rings less and less true. I‘m not a Democrat and won’t be voting Democratic; but I‘m also not Jewish and can’t speak for what the average Jew will find important. To think that the perceived attitude toward Israel should be the sole factor in how a Jew votes… it’s the height of hubris. You‘re in effect saying that if Jews don’t vote based on how YOU think they should vote, they’s not “voting wisely.” We’re talking about Jewish Americans, not Israelis.

The way it’s going it will soon be the way the Jews WERE. It will only take one atomic bomb or all the Muslim states around Israel to make it disappear. Then the world will turn on the Jews that are left. It’s already starting in Europe. You know where Obama stands, the State Department has already decided that Jerusalem is up for grabs. American Jews think they are so profound and fair. It’s more like they have intellectualized themselves into believing that if they have good intentions the bad guys will leave them alone. Unfortunately they will be the first victims of socialist tyranny.

Then there are the normal Jews who love America and follow their faith closely. You could prob say that about any religion here, those who are more lose or not faithful to their religion usually are the Obama-types.

      Matthew 26 : 57-65
57Those who had arrested Jesus took him to Caiaphas, the high priest, where the teachers of the law and the elders had assembled. 58But Peter followed him at a distance, right up to the courtyard of the high priest. He entered and sat down with the guards to see the outcome.
59The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for false evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death. 60But they did not find any, though many false witnesses came forward.
Finally two came forward 61and declared, “This fellow said, ‘I am able to destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.’”
62Then the high priest stood up and said to Jesus, “Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?” 63But Jesus remained silent.
The high priest said to him, “I charge you under oath by the living God: Tell us if you are the Christ,e the Son of God.”
64“Yes, it is as you say,” Jesus replied. “But I say to all of you: In the future you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.”
65Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, “He has spoken blasphemy! Why do we need any more witnesses? Look, now you have heard the blasphemy. 66What do you think?”
“He is worthy of death,” they answered.

      1. The High Priest at the time was appointed by the Romans themselves, as were most of the Priests. They were from a sect known as the Sadducees, who rejected oral traditions, used the Temple to advance their own influence, and ceased to exist once the Temple was destroyed.
      2. The Sanhedrin, a Pharisaic body (another sect), would not have been headed by the High Priest. In addition, the Pharisees did not condone crucifixion as a form of execution because it violated their oral traditions and would not have handed over any convict to the Romans. The only conclusion that can be made is that the sanhedrin mentioned wasn’t the true sanhedrin but rather a group of Sadducees, who had no oral traditions, who turned Jesus over because they saw him as a threat to their continued power and influence.

If this is true then I guess the Jews are just natural born victims. At least I can relax and not worry about them anymore. Should we change it to “when they came for the Jews I didn’t say anything … because they didn’t want me to?”

Sadly, most American Jews simply do not care that obama is a life-long anti-Semite and a sworn enemy of Israel.

Jews throughout history have been in the same boat. I guess they can’t see the forest for the trees and they obviously like it.

I have a stand with Israel sign in my front yard. I am doing it because God wants us to stand with Israiel, however, I am very frustrated with the Jewish community, who it seems will spit in my face as I stand for them. Oh well, what is new.

@Amerbur Maybe you should try talking to them and actually listening. Putting a sign in your front yard when you can‘t be bothered to talk to the the people you’re supposed to be helping isn’t support. It’s an insult.

You’re no different from people who claim to support the troops, yet continue to vote for war mongering idiots that want our troops to die policing the world instead of defending America. The vast majority of Israeli’s are against a strike on Iran.

I provide this for all but especially for Liberal_Teacher:

Study up on the Idumeans and you may better understand Real Jews, American Jews and Middle Eastern Arabs.

      http://www.khouse.org/articles/2003/497/

Herod was Idumean (an Edomite), a traditional enemy of Israel.

      Listen to this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8QMKbWyPtKU

Many who say they are Jews today and throughout history are Idumeans. Truth has been obscured over the years, much to the fault of our media and historical revisionists.

Do some homework and make yourself more aware.

God hasn’t spoken to me yet. The Bible was written by men, I don’t know. It was translated by men I don’t know. It‘s published by men I don’t know. Are you saying that God actually spoke to you and told you to stand by Israel?

LT, you are quite liberal with your assumptions. Why do you assume I do not listen no speak to Jewish individuals? My sign is up because I have Jewish friends. I am also a contributor of an organization that helps Jews return from Russia to Israel and provides food to needy Jews. I do this because many of these people survived the concentration camps and I believe they deserve some kindness and dignity. I am also a Christian and as a Christian I believe the Jews are Gods choosen people and that he commands us to stand by Israel. Perhaps you can tell me why the American Jews seem to be against individuals that would be willing to stand by them should the world turn its ruthless eye toward the Jew again – because all one has to do is look at the middle east and listen to the pledge of radical islam to know that it will probably happen again.

I do hope that this poll is wrong, but it would not surprise me if its correct. Many Jews voted for Hitler and then lost their voting rights in the gas chambers.
