Study: Selling Junk Food at Middle Schools Does Not Lead to Overweight Students

Health food vs. junk food in schools has been an ongoing battle for years, especially as the percentage of obese children has tripled since the 1970s. But is junk food sold in school really to blame?
A new study, which the authors held back from publishing for two years due to its controversial findings, reveals that at least in middle school children, sugary drinks, fried food and other popular junk food purchased at school does not correlate to a rise in weight levels.
Last year, The Blaze reported on stories ranging from schools eradicating junk food, schools banning home-packed lunches and the infamous debate over potatoes in school meals, which resulted in Congress fighting for potatoes to remain and stating that pizza was considered part vegetable.
The new study published in journal Sociology of Education was produced from a review of data from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study by Jennifer Van Hook, professor of sociology and demography at Pennsylvania State University, and her colleague Claire Altman. Van Hook and Altman found that in the subsample of 19,450 children grades fifth through eight, more than 59 percent of fifth graders and 86.3 percent of eighth graders attended schools where junk food was sold. According to the press release, while there was a significant percentage of students attending schools where junk food was sold, there was not a disproportionate number of students considered obese or overweight in these schools compared to institutions where junk food was absent.
“There has been a great deal of focus in the media on how schools make a lot of money from the sale of junk food to students, and on how schools have the ability to help reduce childhood obesity,” Van Hook said in the release. “In that light, we expected to find a definitive connection between the sale of junk food in middle schools and weight gain among children between fifth and eighth grades. But, our study suggests that — when it comes to weight issues — we need to be looking far beyond schools and, more specifically, junk food sales in schools, to make a difference.”
“Schools only represent a small portion of children’s food environment,” Van Hook said. “They can get food at home, they can get food in their neighborhoods, and they can go across the street from the school to buy food. Additionally, kids are actually very busy at school. When they’re not in class, they have to get from one class to another and they have certain fixed times when they can eat. So, there really isn‘t a lot of opportunity for children to eat while they’re in school, or at least eat endlessly, compared to when they’re at home. As a result, whether or not junk food is available to them at school may not have much bearing on how much junk food they eat.”
Van Hook said that the findings surprised the researchers so much that they held off publishing for nearly two years “because we kept looking for a connection that just wasn’t there.”

Posted on January 17, 2012 at 11:04amWell, I can speak from personal experience on this.
I usually went to private school. But for 8th grade I wanted to try going to a public school because I didn’t like my 7th grade year at this private middle school (I went back to private school for high school).
And the kinds of food they serve at public schools is shocking.
A huge bowl of french fries with like a pound of cheese dip was my favorite DAILY school lunch.
THEN I would go to the vendors (I was given $5 a day for my lunch) and I’d get doughnuts, ice cream bars, cheetohs, soda, etc, at EVERY lunch.
So, when I was 14, I became pretty chubby (for the only time in my life) because the food I was eating at my public school was just awful – awful in the sense that I could get all kinds of junk food.
I’m all for becoming a food nazi and FORCING kids to eat healthy at school. Take the vending machines away AND the unhealthy meals.
Obviously that won’t solve obesity in America because people can just eat unhealthy foods once they leave school. But it certainly doesn’t hurt!

Posted on January 17, 2012 at 11:33amYou just proved the point of this study. It was not the school that made you chubby. YOUR parents gave YOU the cash and YOU decided how to spend it. The school did not in any way force you to buy junk food with it. If the school did not have a vending machine, you would have found a way to buy it anyway. As the report points out, the problem is beyond the school boundaries. Your parents should have bought you school lunch credit or helped you pack a lunch. It was in no way the school that set you up to buy junk food. You give any kid money and you know it will not be spent wisely.

Posted on January 17, 2012 at 11:34amIt’s called personal responsibility and its not being taught at home. That is the problem. Our ‘so-called’ public education facilities (I can’t call them schools) are supposed to be there to teach and educate our children, not to feed or dictate what is to be eaten.
Some parents do their kids such a disservice by allowing them to get obese – they weren’t born that way…

I attended two separate private schools from 5th through 10th grades. MY daily lunch at private school was nachos with cheese and jalepenos. My last two years were spent at a very large public school that served french fries and nachos also but they served chicken both fried and grilled, baked potatos, salads and a host of other healthy stuff. They also had vending machines at both private and public schools with candy bars, chips, cokes and yes ice cream. I never bought anything from the ice cream machine but occasionally would get chips or candy bar between classes. By the way our school allowed smoking in the smoking area when I attended which should date me somewhat. Anyway, more recently my daughter attended 1st grade in the same district that I attended high school and about half way through last year the district modified their food program to meet new federal regulations. The gist of it is that my daughter would no longer eat the crappy food. When they did have something decent it wasn’t enough and she complained about being hungry all day. We packed her lunches from that point and put all kinds of tasty junk in there for her. She is still rail thin. Her new district has great lunches and breakfast. Costs us more but well worth it. If her school tried this liberal overreach I would remove her and put her back in private school or would homeschool her. I refuse to have some damned pencil pushing moron tell me what to feed my kids. Screw all of you!

Posted on January 17, 2012 at 2:12pmWhen I was a child – during World War 2 Occupied Europe – I remember the school lunch was ALWAYS a soup. One day the teacher quit ladling long enough to pull a dead mouse out of the vat – then continued to ladel into our bowls. At home, if I didn’t like was was in front of me for the evening meal (I ususally left my brussels sprouts or mushrooms) and I would say “I‘m not hungry’! Mother would say “That’s alright Dear, it will keep very nicely for your breakfast when you WILL be hungry.
Today, at 80, I’m far more healthy than many young folks today. I eat my veggies and I drink my water. Too bad some of today’s folks have NEVER been hungry enough to eat what is put in front of them. Oh, and by the way, it is MUCH cheaper to put veggies and fruits on school lunch counters than it is to buy bulk prepared food from vendors. But, of course, we have to keep the junk food factories in business.

Posted on January 17, 2012 at 3:45pmHow then do you control what they eat at home? Theoretically 2/3rds of their meals are from home. Kids are fat because parents don’t want to parent. And yes, I do realize there are medical conditions that make kids fat but, it’s a small percentage of the problem. Don’t expect governmet (or your prissy private school) to do the job a parent should do.

Posted on January 17, 2012 at 4:16pmOf course, selling junk food does not lead to obesity in schools (by itself); almost EVERY food outlet in America does. Go to any major grocery store and check the contents of each shopper’s basket. The vast majority are eating 90% CRAP food. Americans are amongst the dumbest eaters on earth, plus they get the least exercise. Give me a break….These food stories are ridiculous. Our culture is freaking ridiculous.

Posted on January 17, 2012 at 11:00amWhat schools and the ding dong‘s in charge fail to realize it isn’t the food the kids eat, it is the lack of exercise aka class recess to play kick ball or all the other activities the ding dong’s banned on the play ground because ONE kid got hurt. PLEASE. I had so many scraps and bruises growing up and I am still here at age 60. Also the video games kids spend endless hours playing. Kids should get only one hour of game time. In addition, overweight kids tend to have overweight parents; parents are feeding their kids too much crap and processed foods because they are convenient. I am beginning to think the onslaught of ADD and ADHD are caused by “processed foods”. We never had this issue growing up as most parents actually sent time cooking meals rather opening a box.

Posted on January 17, 2012 at 12:35pmSo called “processed foods” have been around since your grandparents were in elementary school. And yet the increase in the amount of people getting fat is a relatively new phenomenon.
People need to quit trying to invent causes for something that has a cause that is so obvious and simple. People get fat because they eat too much and don’t exercise enough, period. It’s that simple. Kids don’t go outside and play anymore, they sit in the house and play video games or watch youtube. And since they’re in the house 24/7 all they do is eat all day long every day.
And of course I’ll add another reminder that the statistics are skewed. They have revised what the thresholds are for being overweight and obese several times over the past couple of decades. Those changes reclassified millions of people as overweight and obese that would not have been under previous standards.

Posted on January 17, 2012 at 2:05pmCalories in and calories out.
If you burn less than you consume, you will fatten up, regardless of where the calories come from. Some foods convert to fat more readily, and some people’s bodies convert food to fat faster, but the facts don’t change. If you burn calories, you lose fat. If you work muscles, you build muscle which also burns more calories.
Regardless of those facts, this is supposed to be a free country. The last thing anyone needs is a “one-size-fits-all solution” from a centrally planned source. Those don’t work. We’ve seen almost a hundred years of those plans failing at all levels of our society.

Posted on January 17, 2012 at 3:16pmI like Sapper’s attitude. My kids were all bone thin-like their dad, could eat anything, and chose healthy suff and junk. Healthy kids eat what their body needs, our bodies give us big nods if we listen. Unfortunately, we want to listen to the crummy cravings as we get older. Studies show most kids will eat a complete diet over a period of time when offered varied foods, we seem to override that the older we get, and have to start thinking about it. There are exceptions to the rule , as always.

Kids are overweight because poor people find it easier to buy cheap processed foods in a box. Making it from scratch cost three times as much. I cooked from scratch once and it cost me nearly 20.00 just to make the meal. hey jackass, I am a veteran and would like to inform you that the military has pretty stringent standards. When I enlisted in 1988 I was “too fat” to join. I was 6ft 1in tall and 210lbs, had worked on a farm for most of my life and had little body fat. The military requires strict height weight requirements. If your weight is higher than their chart says it should be then you are “too fat”. These statistics are what you are quoting. Not the ones after those like me are tape tested and body fat calculated. After 1 year in the Army I was 215lbs and had 13% body fat. The max standard is around 20% for a 19 year old. Yet every time we had a physical training test I had to get taped and calculated…never mind I had 18inch biceps, a 21 inch neck and could bench press 400lbs. So please spare us the drivel about 1 in 5 being “too fat” to join the military. Almost EVERY kid in high school is too fat on initial enlistment. That’s part of what basic training is for. While I’m addressing you, I should let you know that calling yourself sensei is a major delusion of gradeur. I’ve seen lots of your posts and you could not sensei a 3 year old with the idiotic logic or rather lack of. Grow a brain!

Critics also worry that these lower weights will persuade doctors to start prescribing diet drugs for people who don’t need them. Some diet drugs carry health risks, such as an increase in blood pressure.

Posted on January 17, 2012 at 11:02amYes, AND it is important to note … some kids pack on some weight just before a big increase in height takes place. I personally have seen this in my kids’ friends. They lose the weight easily the minute they grow taller. So this is not a junk food issue. And it is not necessarily a food issue at all. It may be a lack of exercise issue – some schools are cancelling PE and kids play waaaayyy too many video games which keep them stationary too long. But beyond those two things, I think what the kids eat is up to them and their parents to decide, not the government.

Posted on January 17, 2012 at 10:33amAs they say statistics don’t lie. Liars use statistics. Without controlling for their diet outside of school a study of this type is nonsensical. The point is that school, a place where we attempt to educate kids, should present healthier food alternatives then perhaps they receive at home from indulging and ignorant parents. While moderation and exercise are key, providing better information and choices to kids to offset the horrible diet most Americans have is a positive thing. No one is forcing them to purchase or eat the healthier alternative, just eliminating additional junk from their diet.

Sitting on your butt all day makes you fat. When I was a kid I was always outside doing something. Then, people got terrified to let their kids out of their sight. Why? Child molesters and the government. Why the government? Because if your kid gets into trouble and your not watching them it’s child abuse. So…kids get home and turn on the computer or the video games, and don’t move except to pee and eat! That‘s why they’re fat.

Report Post »Bullcrap, You can eat anything you want including carbs……And stay heathy as a horse if you work for it. My grandparents lived well into their ninties ate food fried in lard, fresh bread every day, and tons of smoked and salted meats as there were no refridgerators. They worked from sun up to sun down raising crops and chickens, hogs,a cows,as well as setting nets ,pots and wares. big daddy didn’t even stop working everyday until his mid eighties. It’s all life style if kids are exposed to fatty foods and carbo growing up their body learn to properly digest them ,just like if kids are exposed to germs their immune system is stronger for it. YOU get them started early on physical fitness and YOU stay with till they move out .

Posted on January 17, 2012 at 11:30amThe government’s food recommendations have to balance what is known about nutrition and good health with various political pressures, especially the farm and food-processing lobbies. That’s why carbs and dairy are as prominent as they are on the “food pyramid” and similar schemes, and why fresh fruits and vegatables are usually underrepresented. It’s why I remember macaroni and cheese from school lunch days so fondly. Mmmm, macaroni and cheese. . . . always on Mondays. Tuesdays, spaghetti. And so on. Always with chocolate milk.

Posted on January 17, 2012 at 9:26amSo what is MO going to do now .. keep trying to force “greens” down their throats?

Posted on January 17, 2012 at 10:43amI understand your anger at having it forced down your throat.I really wish you had used another food group for illustration though.Greens got a bad rap long before this. When cooked correctly they are very good. When cooked wrong they are tasteless green mush. Its the chief reason they aren’t well liked by quite a number of people.Having mu and mo shove them down our throat only makes it worse.

Posted on January 17, 2012 at 9:25amI seem recall a recent news cast that has identified students’ sedentary states are believed to have been caused by the actions of trial lawyers suing school playgrounds and activities out of existence. The left wants to blame it all on the parents and/or fast food, but it seems that all of the lawsuits have put the brakes on for children actually getting any exercise.

Posted on January 17, 2012 at 10:27amCATB, I was born in the early fifties and I certainly gave myself many of those life’s little lessons with plenty of cuts and bruises. Having worn glasses since age eight I broke plenty of them back then too. Such things teach one to not become a victim of their own stupidity. Trial and error, live and learn.

Posted on January 17, 2012 at 9:23amWhen they eat high carb breakfast cereal before school, high carb meals at lunch, high carb snacks after school, and starchy, high carb dinners, that candy bar from the school vending machine isn’t going to make a whole lot of difference.
