Study: Nearly 40% of Europeans Have Mental Disorders

LONDON (The Blaze/AP) — A new study estimates that about 38 percent of Europeans, or 165 million people, have some type of mental illness and that most are going untreated.
The ramifications of these findings are important to note, as mental illness’ wide-ranging impact goes beyond the individual. Reuters has more:
…mental illnesses cause a huge economic and social burden — measured in the hundreds of billions of euros — as sufferers become too unwell to work and personal relationships break down.
“Mental disorders have become Europe’s largest health challenge of the 21st century,” the study’s authors said.
Researchers analyzed data from more than 500 million people in 30 countries in the European Union plus Switzerland, Iceland and Norway.
The experts surveyed more than 90 different problems, from attention deficit disorders in children to dementia in Alzheimer’s patients. Rates of mental disorders didn’t appear to be rising, compared to a similar study in 2005.
The most common problems included anxiety disorders, insomnia, depression, alcohol and drug dependence and dementia. Voice of America reports on the most disabling diseases, among other important considerations the study raises:
The study found that the most disabling conditions are depression, dementia, alcohol dependence and stroke. According to the survey, women are more likely than men to suffer from depression.
The study also noted that while brain illnesses were on the rise, large drug companies are investing less in research on how the brain works.
Experts estimated only one-third of people receive treatment. Hans Ulrich Wittchen, the study’s lead investigator, had the following to say about the lack of treatment being sought:
“The immense treatment gap … for mental disorders has to be closed. Those few receiving treatment do so with considerable delays of an average of several years and rarely with the appropriate, state-of-the-art therapies.”
The study, which was published Tuesday by the European College of Neuropsychopharmacology, may shed more light on the need to combat this wide-spread issue.

Mental deficiencies would certainly explain why a homogeneous, successful society typical in Europe, before the inundation of multiculturalism occurred, opted to encourage immigration from third world countries. Only nut cases would encourage such nonsense. They now have religious fanatics who could be deemed certifiably insane and black criminals that just about finished off London in these last sets of riots and looting.
But, I imagine the US percentage would be well above 40%, considering that most of the black population is paranoid and believes there’s a plot against them at every turn, like blowing up the N.O. levees, or introducing crack and aids into their neighborhoods to wipe them out, along with other nutty claims that defy the imagination.
The West is being destroyed from within, and they have their so-called “elites” to thank for thinking they know what is best for everybody. And, thankfully, it is these same elites who will reap the harvests of what they have sown when the third world hordes are climbing over the fences of their gated communities, looking for food and loot to wretch from their arms, delivering a well-placed blow to the teeth in the process of it all. I suspect even those deadheads might even realize the error of their ways about that time.

“……depression, dementias such as Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia, alcohol dependence and stroke.”
These are, apparently, the four most economically significant “mental illnesses” in the study. While many view the headline as proof of a systemic moral decline in Europe, digging deeper indicates this study covers a very wide set of disabilities. Taking the four biggest disorders in the study, one can argue that alcohol depence and depression could be linked to the economic system. However, I‘d submit that stroke and Alzheimers doesn’t have a lot to do with whether you’re livng in socialist paradise, or as an orthodox religious person (for example).
It’s an interesting enquiry, but those kind of questions need to be answered in a different study. The effect of a political/economic regime on ones mental health is not what this study is about.

Report Post »Think living conditions has a great deal to do with our overall health…..overall health has a lot to do with mental health. Europeans are crammed together. First time I went, I was surprised at how small some things were, like apartments, streets. Latest stats I saw on Germany was 40% atheists, 40% muslims, 2% christians, 18% other. Not a lot of hope in that group….no hope means all the other health problems which contributes to mental problems.
