Stumping at CPAC: Romney Knocks Obama, Supporters Pan Palin

In what may have been the first stump speech of the his 2012 presidential campaign, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney steered clear of mentioning health care reform — neither President Barack Obama‘s landmark overhaul law nor his own state’s health care system implemented under his watch. Instead, the Republican front-runner used the opportunity to kick-off an extensive critique of President Barack Obama.
During his address Friday morning to the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), former Gov. Romney barely touched on Obama’s controversial law — the subject of legal contention between the federal government and at least 26 states which have pledged to take the battle all the way to the Supreme Court. For most Republicans, ObamaCare is a major reason to oppose the president’s re-election in 2012, so it‘s not surprising that Romney instead chose to address Obama’s handling of the national economy and foreign policy.
“The president went from ‘Change you can believe in’ to ‘Can you believe this change?’” he said.
Romney told the captive conservative audience that President Obama has stood watch over “the greatest job loss in modern American history.” He also wasted little time in distancing himself from other potential 2012 Republican contenders.
Romney supporters were actively working to paint him as the “anti-Palin,” a viable alternative to the GOP’s former vice presidential nominee, Sarah Palin. “Intelligence versus not-so-intelligent,” said Ken Merritt, a Romney supporter with Alaskan. “Fluff versus not about fluff … [Palin] does a great show on TV, though,” Merritt told the Huffington Post.
“I would much rather have him than Palin,” Bradley Gunther, a student at the University of Delaware, added. “I think she is a good spokesperson for the conservative movement. She’s like Howard Dean for the Democrats: she gets people fired up but can’t win an election.”
“It’s going to take more than new rhetoric to put Americans back to work. It’s going to take a new president,” Romney declared Friday.
“Let me make this very clear. If I decide to run for president, it won’t take me two years to wake up to the job crisis threatening America,” he remarked, highlighting his background in business.
Romney unabashedly criticized what he described as Obama’s “European-style” rule.
“With our economy in crisis, the president and his fellow liberals turned to Europe for their answers,” Romney said. “Like the Europeans, they grew government, they racked up bigger deficits, they took over health care, they pushed cap and trade, they stalled production of our oil and gas and coal, they fought to impose unions on all America’s workers, and they created over a hundred new agencies and commissions and hundreds of thousands of pages of new regulations.”
Additionally, Romney knocked the Nobel Prize-winning Obama for failing to manage contentious U.S. relations with rogue states such as Iran and North Korea. He also condemned Obama’s latest foreign policy achievement — a nuclear arms treaty with Russia — for weakening Washington while favoring Moscow.
“I surely hope that at some point in the near future, the president will finally be able to construct a foreign policy, any foreign policy,” Romney joked.
“I refuse to believe that America is just another place on the map with a flag,” he said. “I believe that America is an exceptional nation, of freedom and opportunity and hope. We are an exceptional land.”
In avoiding addressing controversial topics like health care, Romney made it clear that his strategy going into the 2012 campaign season is to focus on the future rather than dwelling on the past. But it‘s unclear whether voters will be so willing to overlook Romney’s past policy decisions.

She will do more for us doing what she is than being president. Does anyone believe she is going to run anyway? I don’t think so. Romney has his faults, but no candidate is perfect. I would quite like to see him as President. I’m in MA, so I know Mass healthcare(Romneycare) is not doing much good for the state. He should admit the mistake and move on, however, when given opportunity he stands by his decision to have had it implemented here. He is presidential in nature and I think with the economy we need someone like him. I do also believe for him to win, he absolutely needs to bring a “tea party” candidate along for balance. Unfortunately when we vote in the primaries, we don’t know who he will pick for VP. He seems sincere in wanting to fix the country and I know he can and will do it for the people.

Romney just happens to be one I trust to do the right thing now with our economy and I think he can pull over independents. I don‘t want a RINO and don’t think Romney falls completely in that category. As far as smaller government, pro-capitalism, he is on our side. I know I’m a little biased towards him, as he was my governor(though I’m not a MA native and frankly, I hate everything about MA and am forever plotting my escape!). Personally, I would LOVE to see a Romney/Palin ticket. Romney is not anti-Palin. I’m dreading Huckabee or Gingrich jumping in. There are many true, new, “tea party” conservatives(who I agree w/ 100%) I would love to see run, but right now, it’s a question of who is ready, who can win, and who is stepping forward. We all have to speculate because their is no clear front runner(those who are announcing or really moving towards a definite run)- I hate this waiting around.

Listen, abortion is already in the books. There’s nothing a president is going to do to change that unless he is a champion for pro life. Otherwise, who cares if he’s pro life or pro choice? What happened in 1972 is history and has nothing to do with what a man thinks today. Yes, I’d love to see someone who is pro life get in, but really, what will he do if he does?
Report Post »That aside, we need, first and foremost, an economist. We need someone who has fiscal sense and can get us out of the absolute cesspool of a mess we’re in. That job alone is big enough to vote for someone who has the kind of fiscal sense Mitt does. If he does nothing else as president, it will be enough and we can reassess in 4 years. But abortion—–I mean, I‘m about as much pro life as anyone I’ve ever known but it’s not a pressing issue at the present. That’s like turning off the stove when the house is burning down. We need to repeal Roe-v-Wade, but not right now. Right now, we need to get out of this mess. Otherwise, we won’t be around to repeal Roe-v-Wade.

Posted on February 11, 2011 at 11:25pmThe people of Mass. overwhelmingly wanted it, him being a can do kind of person got it done for them. There is a big difference between a state healthcare program and Federal Government one that was pushed when the majority did not want it. Romney’s version was well with the constitution, Obamacare totally unconstitutional. I have never heard him say that there should be a nation wide program. If there is such a broken system each state should be able to decide individually what their needs are and what if anything they want to do. Romney just happened to be the first to accomplish it, as he can any problem, as that is what he does is solve problems, they asked for it he gave them what they thought they wanted.

It is NOT the states OR federal governments job to provide health care to any one! Look at the deficits Romney Care is costing the state of MA. If I’m not mistaken MA has the 5th largest deficit in the country thanks to Romney care. I also want to see proof where a majority of the MA residence wanted this at the tax payers expense. See this is where you northern moderate conservatives have it wrong. How about you take personal responsibility and stop depending on government for everything. WE CAN’T AFFORD IT! Please read these facts and a bit of history on Mitt Romney and I think you will at least see a deeper person than what many of you think.
Why do I think Mitt Romney would be the best candidate for President to run against Obama in 2012? First I think he would absolutely clean Obama’s clock in all the debates they would have. Gov. Romney is a Washington outsider and that is why he got skewered by the lamestream media when he ran for president. Mitt Romney is actually very conservative no less than Ronald Reagan, he graduated from BYU one of if not the most conservative Universities in the United States, and is one of the most if not the most competent leaders in the United States.
For the mess that Obama has made out of our country Mitt Romney would be by far the best person on Earth that I know of who could do the most to fix the problems of our country if that is even possible Mitt would do it as that is what he does and always has been about is fixing problems.
Some of the things Mitt has proven beyond amazing to accomplish, like taking command of the Salt Lake Winter Olympics that were headed for disaster for a one (1) dollar salary and turning them around to becoming the most successful Winter Olympics in history. Romney literally saved those 2002 Olympics from economic doom and under his tremendous leadership turned it from deep in the red into the black.
What about RomneyCare? RomneyCare, signed into law by Romney in 2006, is a state-based healthcare plan , unlike ObamaCare, RomneyCare did not raise taxes and the people overwhelmingly wanted it. If the Democratic run state would have left it the way Romney had it there would not be all the problems that have happened with it. But the bigger and more important difference is that RomneyCare was a state program and not a federal one. If states’ rights and federalism are truly important to you, you would readily recognize this distinction. And on top of all this, Romney has consistently voiced his support for the repeal of ObamaCare, this the same Romney that saved Mass. from demise caused by the Democrats? Not once but twice? The ones that fattened up said health care bill.
Romney saved dozens of companies from closing down & thereby saving thousands of jobs? As a highly successful leader in business, he made money by turning around financially struggling companies like Monsanto, Staples, Office Depot, Dominos Pizza, Burlington, Corning, among many others, saving thousands of jobs.
Later he ran a venture capital firm which provided money to numerous startup companies such as Staples Office Supplies, enabling them to expand and create thousands of more jobs. During the 14 years he headed the company, Bain Capital’s average Annual rate of return on investments was 113 percent. One time one of his employees’ daughter came up missing in New York City and was feared kidnapped. Mitt said to his partners the reason we are in business is for the welfare of our families and shut down the company and organized a search party and they headed for New York. He diligently and quickly divided up the search party and sent them out searching sector by sector with detailed instructions as to how to proceed and the daughter was found. If I recall correctly she was just being a rebellious teenager and had went off and was hanging out with some friends having a good time not realizing what panic and grief she was causing her parents.
At the age of 19 Mitt put his Stanford education on hold and went on a 2 1/2 year mission for the Mormon Church and was sent to France. He lived a life of poverty while there and had to make due on less than $100 allowance a month staying in small apartments with several other missionaries. Many of these apartments he stayed at did not have private bathrooms but one bathroom for all the residence on the floor. As a missionary the lived a very disciplined and rigorous life, waking up at 6am and after extended Scripture study and prayers left for they day, knocking on doors from 9am to 9pm everyday for the entire 2 1/2 years sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ. He was there during the 1960s when Americans were very unpopular because of the Vietnam War with the French. Often a Frenchmen would answer the doors and say “you’re from America, get out of Vietnam” and slam the door. He really grew up from a privileged lighthearted carefree youth to a very responsible serious adult during those 2 1/2 years. He was called to be an Assistant to the Mission President the highest leadership position a missionary can go. Once when driving a car carrying the other assistant, the mission president and the mission president’s wife they were involved in an automobile accident where a drunk driver crossed into their lane and collided head on. Mitt was mistakenly pronounced dead, the mission presidents wife was killed and the mission president was injured. Mitt recovered quickly and had to take charge of the entire mission for six months while the mission president was back in the U.S. recovering from his injuries. He really took charge and fired up the entire mission and carried out all the duties of the mission president doing a remarkable job amist the entire country breaking out with violent student riots and being an American not the safest climate.
Soon after his mission he married his wife Ann and transferred to BYU where she was attending. He ended up graduating #1 in his class and went on to Harvard Business School where he graduated in the top 5% of his class and *** laude from Harvard Law School. He became a father of 5 boys during his college and early business years.
As the 70th Governor of MA, he worked to turn around the state’s economy from a 3 billion dollar deficit to a surplus, balancing their budget in less than 4 yrs. And never accepted a salary while in office.
What is wrong with America not wanting the best possible leader we have available? It’s the economy, stupid! Mitt Romney is one of the greatest leaders this country has, after what you have experienced with Obama you should easily recognize this.
Romney also showed great character when he did not press charges and remained calm when a drugged-out rapper tried to start a fight with him on an airplane ready to take off .. the same rapper now calls him his homeboy.

Posted on February 11, 2011 at 7:54pmUh yeah I saw Bret Baier go over the CPAC poll and I dont like any of the names thrown out there for ‘12… they had Huckabee at like 53% and I think Romney was right there around 52%! Really this is the best we got. Huckabee gets the nomination it will mean BHO has a second term; fact that Romney wont admit his vers of obamacare was a failure will be a major problem for him. The guy has legit business experience and that is the angle he needs to run from. Do that and admit his health plan was bad equate it to obamacare he might have a chance.
I dont think ppl attending CPAC get it we dont want any household name running. We need someone who isnt on the radar Lt Col West might be the one I dunno….

Posted on February 11, 2011 at 7:56pmI don’t disrespect her at all! I think she is great! I just think that WE should not disregard other possible GOP canidates. Some of us are falling into the same thing that thing that got Obama elected. I am not comparing her Obama at all!! But the mentality of so many is that she is the only one that can save this country. We cant go into this next election with tunnel vision. She stands for everything we believe in, no doubt, but I don’t think there are enough of us yet to actually get her there. So don’t bash me for disrepecting Sarah Palin, that is not the fact at all. But I am not wearing rose colored glasses.

If he gets the nomination it may be in his best interest to have Palin as a running mate but if he has p.o.ed her supporters it will not go smoothly.

I have a pair of rose colored glasses and I don’t have them on at this time.Sarah has name recognition and is a brilliant tactician. She has experience and a skin as thick as steel. She is hated more than anyone I have ever seen by the left and she showed me something when she first ran with that loser McCain. He libbed out many times during the campaign and she stood tall and to principle. I will stand with her though the Heavens fall because she is a righteous candidate and I don’t care if she wins or loses and I would hope she would win but I believe in God and have seen miracles in this country lately as I am an older man and I thought I would see America continue to die a slow death the remainder of my life . But that all has changed. There has been a revival of righteousness because of the good work of Glenn Beck. I believe in miracles and what I have seen in the last 24 months are such that I will go with right over expediance. Its the time for good men and women to stand on principle. We will win all around.

Report Post »Secondly, while I do like Sarah, I don‘t think she’s as electable as many of you think.
She is FAR too polarizing and there is half of America that cannot stand her.
Mitt would be a great fit for POTUS and an excellent candidate to take on and defeat BO. I am pulling for him personally. I voted for him in the 2008 primaries and was sorely disappointed in the GOP giving McCain the nod.
I cannot see a Palin/Bachman white house. That’s unrealistic. The country will not go for it.
I would vote for them if they win the GOP, but I think like McCain, it will be a losing cause.
Mitt is electable. Mitt will do a fine job. He turned Mass’ budget around. He turned the Salt Lake City games around. He’s what we need more than most in this economy. He’s fiscally savvy and right now, that more than anything else is the type of president we need.

I don’t want to see the destruction of America and that is precisely why I have chose to stand on principle as opposed to trying to figure out who will vote for who. I will not ever go with the crowd as that is always the wrong way. But I think God needs to step up and I believe he will if we will show some small faith and I say small because voting for Sarah is the right thing to do and does not require a leap of faith to believe she can win. She is devisive and thats just what we need. Almost all politicians try to speak what they think will please the widest audience. Thats not working anymore. Its sounds like a worn saying but we need to think outside the political box. We need a divide. We will win. We will win.

I for one really like Sarah Palin, she is a tremendous voice for conservative principles and would support her if she comes out the front runner in the 2012 campaign, the only one of the candidates I would not support is Huckabee and that is because I personally blame him and Florida governor Charlie Christ for McCain getting the nomination in 08, other than him I would wholeheartedly support whoever runs against Obama, but I am hoping that Obama has been so discredited by that time that he will not be running.

Posted on February 11, 2011 at 9:44pmMitt will be another Bush-like institutional Republican. BO supporters grew by-and-large in opposition to Bush (who helped to promote an NAU with the CFR). We need someone with tact who can instill the belief that the Constitution applies to ALL Americans, and we don’t have to submit to global influence.
We will still be involved in ME affairs trying to prevent a caliphate, and the people there and here will protest even moreso. Will we be the shiny beacon or will we take by force with ME U.S. backed puppets? The world will not support the West with another US backed Mubarak in the ME. We would only delay the inevitable chaos that’ll ensue.
We will need someone who will restore faith in Conservatism, appeal to independents, and even pull in some liberals and Dems who see their way of life is being hijacked by progressives, socialists, and Islamic extremist in bed with each other.
The youth are ignorantly inspired by Egypt’s turn of events. Now, they must be inspired by our rejection of the notion that we will bow down to corruption, on both sides.

Posted on February 11, 2011 at 11:53pmI firmly believe that the reason the people who do not like Mitt Romney is because they have not taken the time to really get to know him and do enough their research on him. He believes 100% in the constitution, he will not take a salary as he is very much like our founding fathers. I say any politician who runs for president and can financially support themselves should not take a salary. I have never said that the Mass healthcare system was a good thing but he as their Governor was competent enough to get it done for them as they wanted it. He does need to come out and explain his position on it and give his side of the story I will give you all that. I think if he runs again he will make sure the American people know who they are getting if you vote for him. I respect everyones right to have the opinion that you hold I am just doing my part as a citizen to pass on the information I know about the candidate I feel is best for our country, and at the same time I believe everyone should put the same kind of effort into supporting the one that they think is best. That makes for a very healthy country and we will never make a Obama sized mistake again if we all do that.

Posted on February 12, 2011 at 11:38amIf Sarah Palin wins the Republican Primary then Obama gets re-elected, its that simple. I love Palin, but the fact is she is too polarizing for independent voters to get on board, so they will go with Obama. You can love her all you want, but its the independent voters who will decide this election and polls have shown that she is simply too divisive to pick up their votes. Romney, on the other hand has serious economic experience and can bring jobs back to the U.S.. Just because I know that Palin can’t win an election does not mean that I dont like her, it just means we need someone who’s willing to appear to be more in the middle for us to win. She cant do that, Romney can. Get over it. Like I said at the start, if she wins the Republican Primary like most of you want then obama will win in 2012. Bet on it.

Posted on February 12, 2011 at 12:19pmSarah Palin is the only Reagan Conservative in the pack of 2012 Hopefuls. Looking at her biographical history, everything she has done has prepared her for this time in history, to be a leader. She has not wavered on her principle beliefs. She lives the talk. She is a humble tower of strength as a women and American. She willingly entered the polictical den of dragons and has stood in their fire and won the hearts of the many, like Reagan, on honest, simple conservative principles. The polictical media -spitting cobras, veinly strike to paralyze her, manipulate the message. Devalue her as women. The truth is she comes from the American Spirit, that lead those early Americans to bring forth upon this continent a “new nation” conceived, in liberty and dedicated, to the proposition that all men are created equal. A nation that incorporated the leading concepts of the “first nations”, ancient nations and spritual teachings. Condemn her, you condemn America. Sarah Palin is the correct leader at this time is history, to correct the course of the United States. She has shown she can navigate and produce results in political/business mired arenas. While the mealy pundits are looking for the shining knight, the real power is the Joan of Arc. Stop trying to burn her at the stake. She is not stupid, she is beating them at their own game.
