Stunning Video: Bystanders Lift Burning Car Off Crashed Motorcyclist

This could be one of the most incredible videos you see all week. Not just because it involves a burning car, a burning motorcycle, and a trapped rider, but because it shows the compassionate side of humanity.

On Monday around noon, a man was riding his motorcycle near Utah State University. While driving down the road, he noticed a car pull out in front of him. Unable to stop in time, he had to intentionally lay his bike down to avoid a head-on collision. He still collided with the car and that’s when the two burst into flames. He got trapped. Then this happened:

“It was very hot. It was hot and very dangerous,” bystander and rescuer Anvar Abdumitalimovic Suyundikov told KSL-TV. “I thought it was close to explode.”

Suyundikov explained that the group of people had to take matters into their own hands because there was no time to wait for rescuers.

“If we wait, we could lose him,” Suyundikov said.

“It was a very tall fire,” he added. “When I lifted the car, it was very, very hot in there.”

“(The motorcyclist) saw what was taking place in front of him, laid the motorcycle down in an effort to keep from colliding with the vehicle,” Assistant Logan Police Chief Jeff Curtis told KSL-TV. “I’m impressed that that many people would get involved, especially where there’s fire involved, the possibility of explosions and everything else,” he later added.

The victim, 21-year-old Brandon Wright, was transported to a local hospital and is in critical condition.

UPDATE:

HJNews.com reports Wright is expected to survive and should be updated to stable condition soon:

The Utah State University student who was rescued Monday morning from under a burning car on a busy Logan highway is making a good recovery.

Brandon Wright is in an intensive care unit at Intermountain Medical Center in Murray, but a family spokesperson said the 21-year-old Richmond native will be in stable condition by early this afternoon.

“It’s pretty remarkable the lack of injuries he received considering what happened,” said the man’s uncle, Tyler Riggs. “He has a broken femur, tibia and pelvis and a burn on one of his feet and a little road rash on his face. But really if you look at him, he looks great after what he went through.”

The removal of the victim from under the car was fantastic, but I felt sorry for him laying there in the street totally ignored by everyone else. No one, including the police attempted to conduct any type of first aid on the victim; or even to see if he were alive. However the actions taken to get him clear of the car are not to be ignored. People did what they were comfortable doing.

The reason all the people backed away is because the Cop jesters with his right hand and thumb, at 00:47, for everyone to get back. Probably fearing an explosion. He then reaches for the mic on his left shoulder to call for help. Then they delt with the fire. They are trained not to move someone with severe injuries because this usually causes more injuries. Kudos to the people who lifted the car and pulled him out.

@ Kalish — The guy filming the events (and those near him) were on like the 9th floor of a building about 200 yards away. Not much physical to do at that distance. All they could do was express their thoughts — just as you did.

@ Krenshau — I think that the guy in the suit was the driver of the BMW. If so, he would probably have been in a state of shock.

      @Pave

I don’t believe they were ignoring him or they wouldn’t have lifted the car. I doubt any bystanders were trained for giving aid. I would have done more damage than good if I attempted to provide first aid. I am no EMT, but assume his condition would need at minimum the tools carried by first responders for treatment. Once he was out from under the car the fire was the next immediate threat. They tended to the biker as soon as they addressed the fire, to the best of their resources.

This is one of the most incredible motorcycle incidents I ever imagined seeing, let alone with the “good” results via reports from the hospital. As a former “cycle passenger,” and once having my own bike, I was taught to “Drive for Five” (1) yourself, (2) the vehicle(s) in front of you, (3) the vehicle(s) behind
you, (4) the vehicle(s) on your left, (5) and the vehicle(s) on your right. I found that being a passenger
was much safer than an operator so sold my bike and was much happier. With all blessings to the
young man who had the courage and forethought to lay that bike down, let alone survive. FLL.

I have watched the video 6 or 7 times so it took me a bit to notice the guy in the suit, at the passenger side rear of the car, who just stands around the entire time. He pulls something from his suit coat pocket then puts on his glasses. He wanders around and is quite close to the car, but he never helps in fact he seems to be not affected at all by what he is watching. He never helps, just watches. After they pull the guy out from under, he wanders over and stands at the guys side, looking down at him. He doesn’t kneel as others do

If you mean the guy in the suit who came from the back of the car…. watch the video full screen. He came running from the far left of the screen. He was either across the street or further down the road.

To: thatcatgirl – I don’t think anyone was coming to “conclusions”. People are just entertaining ideas about the man. Therefore, IF he jumped out of the car (IF it was him driving!) he would have run away from the car off to the right of the camera angle since it was on fire. So his direction of approach from the RIGHT of the screen would still make sense.

To ThatCatGirl: What you can’t see on the video is the lay of the land. I lived about 4 blocks from where this happened and spent four years studying music in the building right where this accident occurred. The driver most likely jumped from his car and ran off-screen to the RIGHT because (a) there is a sidewalk, grass, and buildings there. If he had run off-screen to the LEFT he would have gone over a cliff, and if he had run off-screen towards the top or the bottom, he would have still be in the roadway.

If you were in a car accident and your car caught fire, what would you do? Run towards the cliff? Into oncoming traffic? Or towards the safety of the sidewalk, grass, and buildings?

I got to agree, the conclusions some have come to are hilarious and moronic. We have no idea why the guy in the suit did what he did. Not everyone is born to do what those ppl did. The one woman was probably the most aggressive of all involved, but most were men. Was she the only woman in the area? Great story and great video but some of you ppl need to get a life…..

Well, perhaps we should have a contest to see who can come up with a story about who the guy in the suit is, and what he is doing. At one point, he actually is leaning on the trunk of the car– what is that about? He moves around in a very odd manner, even seeming to be circling the guy’s body as he lays on the road. He backs away from the injured person as though he is afraid of him…yet he was leaning on the trunk of the car (isn’t the gas tank around there somewhere?) at one point.

Very odd behavior. Who is he?

First, I hope he has a speedy and full recovery.
Second, You NEVER lay a bike down to stop faster! You keep the bike upright and use both front and rear brakes at same time (motorcyclist should practice this until it is automatic). Worse case you hit the car and fly over it…not under it.
Third, Another car causing a motorcycle wreak…I watch out for Crown Vic‘s and Volvo’s.

Exactly, Never ever “lay a motorcycle down” to “avoid” a crash. The instant you decide to go down you have given up all control and hope. As long as the wheels are upright you can still brake and steer. Might as well be braking when you hit.

Not having seen the wreck occur, it would likely have been better to have used every possible bit of braking before impact and then gone slower over the top of the car and slide unimpeded down the street than to go fast under the car and be wedged to a stop.

      Posted on September 13, 2011 at 11:58am

That sounds very logical and practical. Too bad it’s a bunch of bunk. The likelyhood of being seriously injured goes down exponentially when you’re skidding on the ground rather than flying through the air at a high rate of speed.

When people lay their bikes down it’s because they were moving at a pretty good clip and a car literally pulled out right in front of them where they have absolutely zero time and space to stop or go around them. The only thing you can do is lay it down, or you’re almost guaranteed to be a highway statistic.

If you don’t understand why people do it, then you’ve never been in the situation.

I have been riding motorcycles for 30 years, if you go head on, you risk more head/neck injuries, maybe he was trying to lay it down to possibly hit the wheels of the car, and went under it instead, it’s a hard call when you only have a second to react, I hope he will be alright

I watched the vid and got sweaty eyes as well. God speed to Brandon. Another news site said he was critical but stable. After watching 9/11 video over the past few days, sweaty eyes have become commonplace. God Bless those responding at the scene, there the ones….tears of joy at their first instincts to help out their fellow man.
About “laying it down”. I’ve been riding for about 40 years, starting in the dirt at 13.
Can‘t say I’d ever lay it down on purpose though.
I drive older bike without anti-lock (are they all using it these days?).
Front brakes usually work better ( grab harder)than rear, without locking.
Maybe it‘s a factor that your hand doesn’t pull the lever as hard on the brake lever.
The rear is a different story, locking up REAL quick, especially when you panic.
My conjecture is he probably panicked, and without realizing it locked the rear brake, sending it into a slide.
I’ve done it too many times, or nearly have done it WAY too often.
Not like you can practice, really.
I’ve adusted my rear brake so I have to really push the lever down, which helps, and doesn’t affect regular stopping.
You have to realize ‘What am I doing’, and get OFF the rear brake.
IMHO: The people shooting the video got it right.
They couldn’t have gotten down there fast enough to make a difference.
They were cheering them on, if only to themselves and the Lord.
We owe it to them for capturing the moment.
FIRST time I’ve been glad that someone had a camera (

I agree. NEVER lay a bike down on purpose. Grab as much brake as possible and hit at the lowest possible speed. As soon as the bike is laid down, braking action basically stops and then it’s metal and skin sliding down the road with WAY less friction than rubber on pavement. This rider also had no head protection. The Lord was watching over him.

No one had any medical or emergency training? What is the difference if you save him from fire just to let him die on the street? Maybe first aid and CPR should be mandatory in school, work, everywhere…You never know when you or your family or friends will need it.
