Stunning Video Captures Head-on, Wrong-Way Highway Crash: ‘This Is Going to be Bad’

When you watch the following video, you won’t be able to ignore the accurate premonitions that the man recording it has. To be fair, it’s not too hard to predict what will happen when you see someone driving upwards of 70 MPH the wrong way down the highway. And the worst thing that could happen, did.
“This is going to be bad,” the gentleman filming the high-speed hijinx in Collins, MS, on July 8 says. “This is going to be nasty,” he repeats later before telling what sounds like children to close their eyes and not look. Just moments later the inevitable happens:
Here’s how it unfolded:
Miraculously, the driver going the right way, Amy Cox, walked away from the crash unscathed, reports WLBT-TV. So did her young female passenger. The driver going the wrong way, Edward Fairley, was a little worse off: he was taken to the hospital with a broken shoulder and other non-life threatening injuries. He told police he doesn’t remember anything and a motive is unclear. He was charged with reckless driving and other charges are pending following toxicology reports.
“Unfortunately, we see that all the time. It’s not just the state of Mississippi, it’s all over,” local Police Chief Ronnie Dickinson told WLBT.

I can’t believe the cop said the SUV driver might have been distracted, what a moron.
Lets see – he’s on the highway doing 70 mph. The idiot is going the wrong way doing 70 mph. That is a closing speed of 140 mph. This is an extremely rare occurance – you almost NEVER see someone on a highway going the wrong way.
I doubt that cop would have done any better. What a freaking joke.

Posted on July 18, 2012 at 1:55pmMore and more people see the police as a type of Gestapo, as they harass people for not wearing seat belts, talking on the phone or driving 10 miles over the speed limit on the freeway when there is no traffic.
It is not as much a fault of the individual officer as it is the local municipalities that use them to raise revenues. There is generally not enough police officers where they are needed in high crime areas, and too many in suburbia where there is no crime.
We are starting to see a different type of person enter the force, as it becomes more and more lucrative with pensions they would never get in the private sector, just wanting to put in their 20 years, for that pension. Whereas before that incentive existed, one had more passionate officers. Compare the police to a security guard? Many times it is more dangerous to be a security guard, than a police officer. It is a difficult job to be an officer, mainly because it is a government job, which tends to be backwards, as well as our broken justice system that releases violent people soon after the police have done a great job catching them. Very discouraging to say the least.
The police should not have as their main job to be traffic Nazis, and chase drug users, any more that chasing people that drink. Their focus should be on getting violent people off the street as well as thieves, both blue AND WHITE COLLAR criminals, and last but not least corrupt politicians.

Posted on July 18, 2012 at 3:32pmMany of the folks who call police officers Nazi Gestapo jack booted thugs are the same ones who have been on the wrong end of a speeding ticket or spent some time in the Crossbar Motel. A little perspective can be a valuable thing, too. Do you know why a cop pulls someone over for having a broken taillight? It’s not due to a quota, it’s not because he has a fixation on taillights, and it’s not because he feels like harassing another harmless citizen. He wants to get the driver’s license and run it through the system to see if the driver is a wanted felon. In many cases, the bad guy gets a free ride to that very same Crossbar Motel while wearing a pair of stainless steel bracelets. That means the bad guy’s not free later that night to break into your house and steal your possessions. Ask any random cop why he would pull someone over for a busted taillight and he will tell you the same thing.
Saying that people join the police force just to get a pension, or just to exercise control and authority over people, is a discredit to the many fine officers who run toward the source of danger while you are running away.

Posted on July 19, 2012 at 3:12amI drive 50,000 miles a year in a medium truck and I have found the police are YOUR BEST FRIEND out there! I even call them when I’ve had blowouts, to clear my tire parts off the road–and they show up before the tire service! No one likes RADAR, but all it takes is one miscreant to kill you! I use cruise control EVERY chance I get, to help keep me from ‘mission creep’ when I’m driving, and ALWAYS, traffic permitting, when changing from roads that are posted at different speeds or where the speed changes frequently as in I-85 in North Carolina, approaching Charlotte from the north. Try saying ‘thank you for your service’ to a policeman when you run into them at a gas station, coffee stop, etc. Try waving to them (with at least ‘two fingers’, not ‘one’) when you pass them while they are scanning traffic for scofflaws! You’d be amazed how much this will change your attitude–and let them know you are watching them! And, remember, they all go home to deal with the same issues you do, after a shift of never knowing when their job-boredom will turn into a life-changing event!

Posted on July 18, 2012 at 3:22pm@ MUTINY : Looks like that driver MIGHT notice the traffic lights were “backwards” at each intersection. You must pay attention every second you are driving. Look FAR down the road just in case a knucklehead is moving “head on” in YOUR lane. ( They will be on you in just seconds ) Even on a divided highway like this one the knucklehead nearly traveled all the way across the median after impact. Well BEFORE intersections, scan left and right and look for red light runners or drivers that “creep” into the intersection. On Interstate Highways watch for the “wrong way” driver and those that cross the median completely into the oncoming lanes. Driving is Full Time. Do Not: talk on the phone – or – text – or make eye contact with the person sitting RIGHT BESIDE YOU. Keep your eyes on the road. Your traffic situation changes every second or faster ! Posted on July 18, 2012 at 11:31pmIt would seem that even an “out of town” driver, in broad daylight, would understand that the median is to their right, not the left as it should be, and that the traffic coming at them appears to cover the entire oncoming road. The driver might be impaired because of health issues…in which case you are thankful that both he and the victim were not killed. If he were impaired because of indulgence in either drink or medicinal overload, then maybe he should get a long time in little cell and think about life.

Depending on the signage I can excuse it (at night, no excuse when you look around during the day and see EVERY other car driving in the other direction).
If the guy doesn’t remember what happened, then he was most likely intoxicated on SOMETHING. So there is no excuse for HIM… but I have seen poorly laid roads, with bad signage that have caused this (fortunately most people realize it BEFORE they cause an accident).

Driver cold also have been suicidal, but then why not aim for the first Semi-Truck. This is not a case of poorly marked roads, anyone one in a normal state of mind would have realized immediately something was very wrong, rather than to continue on at speed.

The only solution that will ever work is still some time off. Once the car becomes “aware” of the condition of the driver then it can decide to stop him on it’s own. No police control required; if the guy was hammered or in some diabetic state (or off his psych meds for that matter) the car itself could make the call to slow or stop (coupled with GPS and/or a visual system it could even tell if the guy was on the wrong side, swerving too much, driving down railroad tracks or into a lake, whatever)
But, by the time we have all that the damn things will be able to drive themselves. So….
