Super Bowl Ad With Biblical Reference Rejected by Fox

A number of potential advertisements to run in this year’s Super Bowl have been rejected by Fox Broadcasting, including a controversial Frito Lay ad for Doritos and a pro-infidelity ad. The latest ad to be rejected by network execs, however, seems surprisingly non-controversial and is raising questions as to exactly why it’s been banned.
According to Politics Daily, the latest 30-second spot which features a brief reference to a biblical passage was rejected by Fox for “advancing particular beliefs or practices,” which is reportedly against company policy.
The ad was produced by the Fixed Point Foundation, an Alabama-based organization dedicated to defending Christianity in the public arena. A brief glimpse at the words “John 3:16″ are meant to encourage the audience to research the biblical phrase: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
“We thought in this case, let’s put forward something that is understated, that feels secular,” said Larry Taunton, head of the Fixed Point Foundation.
“The Fixed Point Foundation was provided with our guidelines prior to their submission of storyboards for our review,” Fox said in a statement. “Upon examination, the advertising submitted clearly delivers a religious message and as a result has been rejected.”
Though obviously disappointed, Taunton said his organization has accepted the decision and will move on. “They were very courteous and gracious,” Taunton stressed. “Fox Sports isn’t the enemy. We aren’t out to demonize them. We think this is more of a cultural issue than it is a Fox Sports issue. Their solution was just to run from it because they think this is something that would offend their viewership. I think we have become so utterly sensitive and politically correct that the result is we end up doing absurd things like this.”

The bottom line is whether you have Christ in your heart.
If Glenn does, then he is a Christian. Whatever beliefs he holds beyond that, if they are not the truth then hopefully his eyes will be opened in time.
Just because you‘re a Christian doesn’t mean you‘re sinless and doesn’t mean you don’t make mistakes or are misguided in some way or another.
But don’t put Christ in a box. I don‘t think it’s that simple.

Posted on February 3, 2011 at 8:48pmThe Bible wasn’t written to be snipped up so it can fit into a 30 second commercial. As another Blazer pointed out with more verses John 3:16 isn’t exactly what you think. Read the whole 3rd chapter and then decide if you are upset that the reference was turned down. The word was poured out to all flesh, those who want it can have their fill and more. Those who do not have made their choice. You cannot “convert” someone who is not looking. Keep spiritual things spiritual. Enjoy the Superbowl for what it is, a fun event of men competing with men, funny commercials,a winner and a loser. I am pretty sure God could care less if he is advertised.

“There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day. At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores and longing to eat what fell from the rich man’s table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores. The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried. In hell, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. So he called to him, ‘Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.’ But Abraham replied, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony. And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.’ He answered, ‘Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my father’s house, for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.’ Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.’ ‘No, father Abraham,’ he said, ‘but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’ He said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.’” (Jesus speaking in Luke 16:19-31)
“But God raised him from the dead, and for many days he was seen by those who had traveled with him from Galilee to Jerusalem. They are now his witnesses to our people. (Acts 13:30-31)

Encinom, I get tired of arguing with Liberals about the Establishment Clause, but I’m not going to let the lies you were taught go unchallenged. In 1899, the Supreme Court (Church of the Holy Trinity v. United States) concluded that America is a “Christian Nation” and backed its decision with 87 precedents, quotes from the Founding Fathers and excerpts from Congressional Acts. In 1947, however, when the Supreme Court decided that there is a “wall of separation” between Church and State, it took one comment from Thomas Jefferson completely out of context, and did not cite a single precedent.
Every one of the thirteen original colonies had a state-supported Christian religion (e.g., Catholicism, Methodism, Anglicanism, Congregationalism, etc.) and the intent of the First Amendment was to prevent one denomination of Christianity being shown preference over another at the federal level. Simply put, our founding fathers didn’t want a Church of America, akin to the Church of England. Furthermore, if you look in dictionaries that were used in the 18th Century, the word “religion” meant “the doctrine of the gospel.”
You know what? If I had been lied to by my teachers in high school and professors in college, I’d be infuriated that they thought I was so stupid and lazy that I wouldn’t check out the facts. You need to go read some books that were written in the late 1700s and early 1800s by our founders, then you need to write those professors, who took you for an idiot, and tell them you don’t appreciate being lied to.

“But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with them. They are the kind who worm their way into homes and gain control over weak-willed women, who are loaded down with sins and are swayed by all kinds of evil desires, always learning but never able to acknowledge the truth.” (2 Ti 3:1-7)
“They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness.” (2 Th 2:10-12)

Posted on February 3, 2011 at 9:01pmThis is brilliant
BRILLIANT I SAY
make a commercial for the superbowl
but ad space is like in the millions
so make it a bit off color
have the TV station running the superbowl reject it
then everyone on the internet talks about it for three days straight
who ever came up with this should get a gold medal

Posted on February 3, 2011 at 9:59pmNo problem with me either. If it makes people look it up…to see what it means…and I am sure that there are people who don’t know, then what is the big deal…??? Please FOXNEWS don’t become so politically correct that you start stopping your believing folks from mentioning their beliefs…that is so sad. It is what endears them to me, knowing that they have the same beliefs in God that I have. Sure enough ones out there who speak out their NON-Beliefs…look at Bill Maher…I feel sorry (almost) for that man. He doesn’t believe in much of anything. Sad.

Posted on February 3, 2011 at 11:40pmI don’t get it either. I think the commercial is pretty cool, but people seem to forget that FOX is in the business of making money and FOX thought this wouldn’t make them money. Sorry to burst your bubble.

Posted on February 3, 2011 at 11:57pmHonestly, I would think they rejected it because it was not worthy of being a Super Bowl Commercial. Come on people! Super Bowl commercials even get their own SHOW the following week and websites dedicated to showing them for months after the super bowl. They’ve got to shine! Or make us laugh, this ad didn’t do anything and was just pathetic in the grand scheme of Super Bowl Commercials. The commercials are practically as important as the game is these days.

Posted on February 4, 2011 at 3:20pmIt was VERY well done……but is probably no comparison to the fine moral message we’ll all see after the SuperBowl. Fox has no reservations about supporting the wholesome goodness for the entire family portrayed on GLEE. Posted on February 4, 2011 at 6:10pmWhy on Earth would they reject the add, 1st “seperation of church and state” doesnt apply to businesses or individuals in society, 2nd the add is not “in your face” about what John 3:16 is in reference to, and finally 3rd most of the USA is supposedly Christian with the majority of Fox viewers being conservative and/or Christian whom would not be offended. You know, I would expect this type of behavior from MSNBC, or CBS, or even ABC, but Fox. Fox needs to remember who their audience is and not be concerned about the liberals/progressives looking for something to make them a victim.

Posted on February 5, 2011 at 3:00amThis should tell people Fox is NOT a conservative or right-wing organization. The fact that they also own a news network that recognizes from a selfish, monetary, and capitalist standpoint, include a few conservatives just because that’s what people want to watch, does not mean Fox is conservative. The only reason Hannity and Beck are on is to keep the viewer base (i.e. monetary and ratings base). The rejection of this commercial only confirms my theory that they take the path that they believe will offend the fewest people, and make the most money. They figure Christians are forgiving so they won’t hold a grudge against Fox for this. Let’s face it, ALL major media is liberal and self-serving, even Fox. Here’s a couple great conservative sites. http://kgov.com/

Posted on February 5, 2011 at 6:39amIf it had been a quote from the Koran Fox Sports would have been afraid to reject it out of fear of reprisals from radical Muslims. Janet Jackon can show her “titty ”during her halftime performance but we can’t be exposed to something like a verse from the Bible.

Posted on February 5, 2011 at 9:00amBUT-they WILL show the Trojan condom commercials, the sexual lubricant commercials, the Go Daddy sex pot commercials, the beer commercials, and other cultural statements. It‘s not that I’m against making money, and Lord knows, there is a lot of money to be made on selling Jesus stuff (ask anyone with the $2500 suits and $200 haircut who hosts the daily religeothon shows), but why the hypocrisy in picking what you are going to sell to the super bowl audience? Would you rather have the people of America spending money on rubbers and tingling slippery sloppy, or on a bible? There’s dirtiness in the Bible, if that’s the concern-that we’re NOT seeing dirty there: “My lover put in his hand by the hole of the door and my bowels were moved for him” -Song of Solomon, 5:4-
