Superman Renounces U.S. Citizenship in Latest Action Comic

He’s just so sick of being pigeon-holed as an instrument of U.S. policy. And “truth, justice, and the American way“ are ”not enough anymore.” That’s why Superman, in the latest Action Comic, has announced he is “renouncing” his U.S. citizenship.

Although he’s traditionally seen as an American hero (remember, though, he is an alien), Superman is fed up with being connected to the USA. According to the Comics Alliance blog (and reported by BoingBoing), in Action Comics #900 Superman tells the president‘s national security adviser that he’s had enough of the Red, White, and Blue:

Superman Renounces U.S. Citizenship in Latest Action Comic

Comics Alliance explains the context:

The key scene takes place in “The Incident,” a short story in Action Comics #900 written by David S. Goyer with art by Miguel Sepulveda. In it, Superman consults with the President’s national security advisor, who is incensed that Superman appeared in Tehran to non-violently support the protesters demonstrating against the Iranian regime, no doubt an analogue for the recent real-life protests in the Middle East. However, since Superman is viewed as an American icon in the DC Universe as well as our own, the Iranian government has construed his actions as the will of the American President, and indeed, an act of war.

Wired.com offers some more startling details about the non-violent protest that got Superman in trouble:

Goyer’s installment, with tense art from Miguel Sepulveda, steals the spotlight in Action Comics No. 900. When Superman drops in on an Iranian protest to stand with demonstrators in an act of nonviolent civil disobedience, the U.S. government takes him to task for acting as an instrument of national policy. Superman responds by renouncing his American citizenship and proclaiming himself a citizen of the universe.

Comics Alliance author Laura Hudson goes on to explain that the man of steel is increasingly seeing the world from a differnt perspective (sound like any unions?) and he’s ready to go global:
While this wouldn’t be this first time a profoundly American comic book icon disassociated himself from his national identity — remember when Captain America became Nomad? — this could be a very significant turning point for Superman if its implications carry over into other storylines. Indeed, simply saying that “truth, justice and the American way [is] not enough anymore” is a pretty startling statement from the one man who has always represented those values the most.
It doesn‘t seem that he’s abandoning those values, however, only trying to implement them on a larger scale and divorce himself from the political complexities of nationalism. Superman also says that he believes he has been thinking “too small,“ that the world is ”too connected” for him to limit himself with a purely national identity. As an alien born on another planet, after all, he “can’t help but see the bigger picture.”

As NPR puts it, he “proclaims himself a citizen of the universe.”

I really don’t see anything wrong with this…

Super man is a defender of Earth, not a defender of America; I mean he came from SPACE (Illegally if I might add) Now if this was Captain America, I’d be pretty ticked off.

I heard he renounced his citizenship because he’s really gay and is moving to France where he can freely Marry Jimmy Olsen the cub reporter who never got promoted because Mr. White hates Homos.

He thanked Louis Lane for helping him come out of the closet. He said because of her commie-lib reporting and the other entire commie-lib reporter’s at the Daily Planet Newspaper, helped convinced him that he is really gay. Also because of their constant criticism of truth, justice and the American way he has seen the error of his ways and has given in to the dark-side, and is now an Anti-Christ.

Louis was all broken up about Jimmy Olsen stealing Superman from her, but her lesbian lover is helping her get over it. Mr. White is over-joyed that Jimmy Olsen is leaving but hates that Clark Kent has turned in his resignation also.

Breaking news is Jimmy Olson and Clark Kent are suing the Daily Planet over Mr. White’s Gay-Bashing.
Mr. Whites only comments was, “you mean Clark Kent and Superman are gay? Next thing you know the Marine’s will turn ****, Great Caesar’s Ghost.”

I had no idea that writers of comic books were so blindingly brilliant and in control of all that is truly important in the world. We are all therefore, honored even humbled to be allowed to bask in the glory that is your universal intellect. Thank you for your enlightenment, your benevolence, and your pity. We had no idea that the world, civilization and humanity would be lost if a comic book hero didn’t “grow”.

Seriously now, Superman lost his relevance a long time ago…and once gone it can’t come back. That‘s why he’s been reduced to standing in protest lines and not doing anything real..shaking his fist at, rather than actually “getting” the bad guys. I see why you identify so strongly with the “fantasy” industry. It makes you think you know all, control all and you have become hypnotized by the very mirror you profess to hold up to the world. You believe you’re smarter, faster, stronger, more astute and sensitive than the people outside your small circle, and you’re unable to hold back your contempt. You become frustrated by those you believe are inferior, You have not developed a strong, mature coping mechanism, because until now it wasn’t needed, You were always among enablers… Your parents said you were smart (at least in front of you), Friends (if any) support you because you select or reject them if they aren’t “like you”. You think heaping abuse on people that don’t take you seriously will win them over, but that only works on your parents and any of your sycophantic friends that orbit you.
You are deathly afraid and can’t admit or may not even realize it. Afraid of being irrelevant and ignored. Afraid that you’re that “tree in the forest”.. unattended and therefore unheard as you fall.

Why did Superman loose his relevance?…the same reason Tic-Tac-Toe does. We grow and mature (most of us). He lost his “point” we see that he’s not really doing anything other than showing off his powers. If he just tossed Lex Luthor into the sun and then started cleaning up and helping humanity on a global scale….nahh!! that would have gotten old as well… because it’s not real. He was created to sell 10 cent stories to children and those children have moved on…except for a select few that we put up with (like the guy that jousts at fairs).

Why Superman removing his U.S. citizenship in place of citizen of the universe or world is propaganda it sends a message to the youth luckly superman isn’t as popular as it use to be so ythe message will only reach a very limited group and it will reach even less as people know about it.

Isles, I haven’t read comics since I was a kid, but I was never a Superman fan. Let’s face it, that cape was dorky, he had a sissy curl on his forehead, didn’t wear a mask, was too stiff and spent half of his time saving Lois Lane. You know you are scr*wed when you need a villain to make your life interesting. Spidey, on the other hand, triggered an endorphin rush in me every time he went wall-crawling and web-slinging in that awesome costume. I still think he’s cool. :)

Back to 2011, my username reflects my feelings vis-à-vis the traitor within and the myths that surround him. These America haters know that it is not about what our superheroes do, but what they represent, namely, a superpower that believes in doing good, in being generous, and in giving people the best shot at happiness in our fallen world. The left hates God, who is the source of our goodness, so they want to discredit and undermine American exceptionalism.

The definition of American exceptionalism you provide leans left, and Obama has been its prime expositor. It is not that we are better – that is the liberal “how dare you say that” accusation. Rather, it is that we have allowed our nation to be a vessel unto God, to bring blessing to many peoples. In that sense we are unique in the history of humankind (Israel was too, but they did it by law; we do it by grace).

Jesus said, “You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste…[i]t is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet (Matt. 5:13). Applied to us as a nation, it means that if we lose our God-given exceptionalism, we become worthless and die. If we were not a Christian nation, it would have been impossible for us to fulfill our God-given destiny, since principles must be believed before they are lived. Sadly, we have allowed the enemies of God to undo that commitment to the Almighty, and we are now being “trampled under people’s feet.”

Yes, it is worrisome but sadly not very surprising that many don’t read the story well enough to know what is going on. They read the headline and set their opinion from that and then skim the story. From what is shown in the comic Superman’s actions make perfect sense, except the part about engaging in a peaceful protest. THAT was stupid. It would be like him running a marathon for cancer or something and not riunning it FAST.

Makes perfect sense within the story line. As time goes by, as the real world advances, a comic book character’s backstory — and in this case, his world view — has to be retconned.

Retroactive continuity (often shortened to retcon) refers to the alteration of previously established facts in a literary work. Retcons may be carried out for a variety of reasons, such as to accommodate sequels or further derivative works in the same series, to reintroduce popular characters, to resolve chronological issues, to reboot a familiar series for modern audiences, or to simplify an excessively complex continuity structure.

I read that the remake of “Red Dawn” was originally supposed to be an invasion by China. This was potentially a thorn since our relationship with China is so tenuous, so they had to digitally edit out any reference to China (symbols, flags, etc.) and instead were forced to make the invaders from No. Korea. Sad direction for our country, this is.

I’ll say it again…. there are no “youth” reading comoic books to be indoctrinated. Twenty years ago? Yes. Now? The comic book reading audience is made up primarily of people over the age of thirty. Roughly 200,000 readers… most of them are already libs. If the Left is trying to indoctrinate children through comic books, they are barking up the wrong tree!

Don’t worry. Just look at the audience that makes up comic book fans today: 200,000 30 year-old, socially retarded, overweight shut-ins. The actual number of people who will read this book is minimal… much less the extremely small percentage who will take any sort of initiative to ACT on anything in the comic.

If the Left wants to indoctrinate the youth, their attempt at doing it through MODERN comic books is laughable!

There is a difference, POIPNE. A graphic novel is typically bound in longer and more durable formats than a comic book. Also, graphic novels employ a broad manner, encompassing non-fiction work and thematically linked short stories as well as fictional stories across a number of genres.

Zombie, you point about the only begotten son of Jor El is spot on. It highlights the absudity of this topic but also sadly of the present storyline in Superman. If Superman is functionaing as a comic book universe savior type why would we want him to be an American citizen/ Wouldn’t that demean his larger than politics persona? But also, why would he engage in “peaceful protests” against tyranny? Any shlub without powers can do that. That’s the point of peaceful protests. It’s the way the powerless make their voives heard. But Superman has SUPER POWERS. He could go right up to the mullahs and say, “Listen up! The people want their freedom and you’re going to give it to them”

You can’t drag a fantastical hero into mundane reality without screwing up his character.

I used to collect comics. The ones I see now and some of the anime I watch now seems to be taking a decidedly liberal bent, which is unfortunate as it just becomes propaganda. I play role-playing games like D&D, Rifts, and the like. I have read Stephen King, I like most of his stories, I hate his politics. He needs to shut up and write. If people like Zombie are writing their politics into stories, then no wonder comics and graphic novels are on the decline (or at least have ceased getting my attention).

Poor fellas, as someone who is conservative as a matter of practicality I align myself in policy more toward the right but in general I want nothing to do with them as people or much of anyone for that matter.

Look at some of you buffons on right make snarky comments about things you have no real notion of.

First off look at it from a business perspective many of you clowns ask do comics still exist ? this story would answer your question because superman said that he got press and will probably sell more comics and get more interest. You can hate the idea of him saying that but most of you arent buying the comic anyway so its not for you.

Second I work in the very industry I get to make fantasy characters all day that pays for all my bills in my own house and I never have to drive in to work or see anyone if I dont want to, all I do is send in the work via emal. So you go to your crappy jobs with crappy bosses and set your cattle call wake up time in the morning. I dont know how you people can live like cattle and make someone tell you what time to be to work. Its probably because you lack real talent, all I know is I would feel like a complete loser if I had someone tell me I had to be at some meeting or wake up at a certain time.

Yea comics exist now go back to your no talent mundane job. Bet no one is asking for your autograph.

Yeah, DC and other traditional comic makers are long on the bandwagon of statism and globalism. Get to the kids, of course. Fortunately, most kids don’t read comic books any longer, that is now a task for pathetic 40+ men who live in their mom‘s basement and who consider ’graphic novels’ high art.

It was interesting to follow for a bit, but when they made Spiderman a Homeland Security pretty-boy, I figured that the entire realm was done. Hadn’t followed comics in decades, but heard about that and said “enough”. The anti-liberty takes of Capitain America, and now this crap with Superman, just icing on the cake.

Grown men and women don’t need “graphic novels”. If “we” stop reading them, they go away, as I said, because kids generally don’t read them at all any longer. Grow up men, stop acting like teens, let this monstrosity die a nice natural death.

I wonder how many read comic books, or have read them as kids. They generally are far from patriotic cheerleaders. That’s nothteir literary venue. Sayingbthe Superman stood for “Truth Justice and the American way” made sense when these comics were for Amerixcan kids raised in a nation that knew what the “American way” was and was proud of it. I’m not sure that vision is clear anymore. In fact I KNOW it isn’t. Moreover, many of us who believe in what the American way SHOULD be think America has lost her way in many ways. How do you plug a superhero like Superman into that situation?

The reality is that Superman should never have been an America citizen. Would we make Jesus an American citizen? Of couse Superman isn’t the same as Jesus, but in terms of archetypal characters they are more alike than different.

Correct me if I am wrong. But did Superman ever make it his job to defend American foreign policy, to engage in political action, to do anything very political? Isn’t the American way an inherently POLITICAL concept? I remember Superman as being very non-political, non-ideological and generally fighting very small battles with individual supervillains. He worked when kept inside an American focus ignoring the rest of the world. He didn’t take sides within America. He wasn’t a Republican or Democrat. He didn’t support politicianms.

So when taken to the international level it makes sense that he becomes non-partisan internationally. I think a lot of you guys are just using this occasion to focus on a larger issue that this doesn’t really reflect all that much.

Can I ask some of you who are christian, “Are you American first and Christian second, or the other way around?” I am Christian first and foremost, which means I am free to criticize my country and seek the good of more than just my birth land. Why shouldn’t Superman have the same freedom of allegiance?

Superman represented the values of a country created by the greatest, most true revolutionaries of all time. In comparison, any socialist “revolutionary” system is only a modern offshoot a feudal society–(without the church). Nothing really new at all. Even the politcal class becomes ingrown –just a bunch of nobles and lords heavily taxing the people and redistributing (on behalf of the lowly) as they see fit. A Superman who doesn’t get why Superman comes from America, can stay home as far as I’m concerned.

It’s that simple. Don’t go to movies unless they have a conservative theme. If they have liberal actors, don’t go. You have the power. Why would you go see a movie that had someone in it that has spit in your face? If you buy trash produced by liberals you are part of the problem.

I don’t know if you have seen Chariots of Fire. There is a wonderful scene in which Eric Liddel explains why he won’t compete in the Olympic races schedualed for Sunday even if his King asked him to. He served God first, king second. SUPERMAN IS DEAD, didn’t you know, America? Is anybody’s head here still in the sand? The “Superman” you now see is another Kryptonian who has impersonated our hero; a look-alike IMPOSTER. He is an alien and a villain in every sense of the word. You heard him. He has ZERO allegiance to our country. In fact, he wants to destroy it.

This supervillain needs a good dose of KRYPTONITE. That’s why I am a Christian first. If we do not use our spiritual powers and weapons, we can’t win against this alien. It’s as simple as that. He will destroy us and, yes, take our kids from us, even those we homeschool. He doesn’t need comic books to seduce them to the dark side. He’s got academia, the Internet and Hollywood. Look to Jesus, the Eternal One. He’s exceedingly more awesome than any superhero. He is God.

What do you mean Marvel changed the name of Captain America in the new film? EVERY SINGLE source still calls the film Captain America and still calls the character Captain America. Marvel changed NOTHING whatsoever. You really should get your facts straight, you know.

Superman? Jesus Christ is the only true superman!

The whole notion in the first was silly to begin with. The fantasy of a superman demeans real men who must go out into the world and overcome great odds somethings through strength, kindness, honor and integrity. Superman is a demonic creation meant to distract the average Joe from the true and only superman who ever walked this planet and his name is Jesus.

He raised the dead, walked on water, could read thoughts, healed the sick, caused the blind to see, cast out demonic spirits from the bodys of those they tormented, saw the future, appeared simultaneously to many and mostly noted for his ability to transcend death himself after a gruesome crucifiction where he was nailed to a cross. He is alive today and has power to forgive and transform those who believe. Marvel Comics Superman…not so much and does not exist. We can’t get mad over this because he never existed.

There is no question that Jesus existed and many have seen him and will see him again.

ISLESFORDIAN: I guess I mean to express the realization that being American, and protecting the intent of the forefathers, to allow man to be truly free, is profoundly Christian. After having been around quite a bit, I have yet to see a country where Christianity thrives as in the U.S.. Citizenship vs spirituality–I see your point. Still, children who grow up in countries where Christianity has all but ceased to exist (France is a good example) do not grow up Christian. In France, Christianity in the form of Catholicism was a victim of the Revolution. The American revolution had the oppposite effect on religion in our country. Of course we as adults know our alliegence is to God over King. Faith over politics. Truth is, most European children will never ask themselves the sort of questions you asked up above because they will not have been brought up in countries where spirituality thrives.

      My point exactly Patrick..

There’s a good article at the Weekly Standard saying that the only thing that makes Superman interesting is his self limitation by making himself american rather tha a “citizen of the world”, which really means an independent maverick doing what he pleases. If Superman really became that then he would impose his will on the world.

That is a very good point and one I hadn’t thought of. Of course that idea hasn’t really been explored that much in the movies or TV which has been my only exposure to his charcater.

Getlife, you seem to be saying that you are American because you are Christian. Is that it? If so I get it and agree. I think a Jewish israeli would say the same, that he was an Israeli because he was a Jew.

I don’t think America is a Christian nation, but it is the only nation founded upon a political idea that is derived from Christian principles. It’s concept of freedom is the most Christian in the world even if its application of it so often fails its own ideals.

Well, this is why I prefer to read Japanese Manga where they actually teach that governments can be corrupt and should be fought, that a person has to go through hell to redeem not only themselves but to also become a leader people can trust, and that who we ally ourselves with determines who we become. I read comics as a kid and switched to manga about a decade ago when I began to see how they were changing. To be fair, I do still love the dark knight himself…to me, what he truly embodies, is what it means to be an American. I just find it sad that I have to look across the ocean to find writers/artists who write with a knowledge of what it means to value honor, freedom, bravery and sacrifice.

Actually if you were SuperMan- would you want to represent this administration.
Also something to remember only SuperMan is renouncing his US Citizenship (by the way years ago he was made a citizen of every country on Earth in a story.) I mean who wouldn’t want him as a citizen. Clark Kent how ever as far as I can tell so far is not going to do that. It is NOT (as far as I can tell) that he is abandoning “Truth Justice & the American way”. It seems he is tried of being used as a point of contention. Yes I like that he used to be “Truth Justice & the American way”. However the character has changed over time. For example did you know that 15 years ago in a reboot story (when they restarted the character) That “SuperMan” executed the 3 Kryptonian criminals? That was a choice he made. Same storyline he made a porno (not kidding) while under mind control with a female hero (also under control & she was married. Luckily these events were scrubbed from history in the last reboot of the character.
The Captain America story involved the Secret Empire who’s leader was a “high ranking US officail” who when Cap confronts him kills himself- Cap leaves behind the uniform- but not the Ideas – 4 Issues latter he was back as Captain America after he realized he represents The Amreican Idea – The Constitution not the government or an administration.
Last year the current Captain America (Steve Rodgers – now grown up sidekick Bucky) expressed disgust at people expressing their 1st amendment rights to protest. I am glad that it was not Steve Rodgers- simply because that is Not what the real Captain America is about.
Just to let you know Spider-Man a few years ago made a deal with a “devil” to save his aunt May’s life. In doing his marriage to MaryJane was ersased – at the whim of the editor who didn’t like him being married-Not like every story revolved aroung him being married. It’s just lazy.
Point is it’s not Cap or SuperMan or Spider-Man it’s the crappy editors & writers. They don’t believe in the values that made these characters great. So why keep those values?
I mean deal with the devil ? Why not? 1st Amendment? Please. American way? Are you kidding??
So I have stopped with Cap until Steve Rodgers gets back. Done with Spidey till there is a reboot. Supes can understand the why–in the story Iran declares his showing up an act of war- Since even though as stated he has citizenship everywhere– he is considered a US citizen- and since Clark Kent still will be- have to protect secret ID after all.

It’s funny I was combing through old Superman related news articles on FOX News, and I noticed that the producer of the 78 film version is named “Salkind.“ And the first thing I thought of was ”Mankind” and then my over-active mind as usual kept going and I thought of Sol Alinsky. And I thought about how many actors and producers don’t use their real names. And then I thought of the news article about the unemployment office in Florida handing out Superman capes to the unemployed. And then I thought about how odd it is that the producer of Superman is named “Salkind” and how it is almost like “Solkind.” But it’s probably just me.

Superman was an All-American hero because he just inherently knew right from wrong–regardless of politics. Our government was originally set up to use politics only to protect the right of human beings to be responsible for their own lives. This emphasis puts us in a class of our own as far as democracies go. Such a superhero could never have been created out of another culture where poeple look outside of themselves for guidance on what is right and wrong.

I could see past it and hope another writer replaces this jerk, but to do it in the #900 issue is shameful.
So, if he renounces his citizenship, who will keep him from retuning to Metropolis?
Will he have to apply for a visa? I didn’t think Superman really had a citizenship status, but was considered to be American. Clark Kent is a citizen and has a passport and credentials. I wonder if Clark is renouncing his citizenship, too. If not, then he is a hypocrite.

Just fyi. Marvel and DC are both currently owned by left-wingers, just like Disney and most movie companies, which is why I will no longer patronize them. Such companies were founded on values which are now opposite of where they stand. Everything is upside down these days. If we want our kids to have heroes, we’ll just have to be that for them ourselves.
