Surprise! Atheist Lobbying Group Hires Prominent Republican Strategist to Serve as Executive Director

Something quite interesting is brewing over at the Secular Coalition for America (SCA), the nation’s only full-time lobbying group that represents atheists and non-believers on Capitol Hill. Today, with great fanfare, the SCA announced that a new executive director is taking over.

While stories of leadership transitions are common in business and non-profit communities, this particular announcement is unique. Defying what many would typically assume, the group has chosen prominent Republican lobbyist and strategist Edwina Rogers to serve as it’s new leader.

Secular Coalition for America Chooses Edwina Rogers as Executive Director

The decision to select a Republican, specifically considering the stereotypes that lead individuals to assume that most atheist leaders are progressive in nature, is noteworthy.

In March, The Blaze participated in a SCA lobby training in Washington, D.C. As noted, the group was extremely defensive of the Obama administration’s contraceptive mandate — a stance that many conservative Republicans would starkly disagree with. The group did maintain, though, that it does not endorse political parties, which corroborates Rogers’ selection.

The well-known lobbyist is revered in GOP circles on Capitol Hill. The SCA provided the following information about Rogers in a press release earlier today (her resume is certainly impressive):

Rogers has been a public policy expert for over 20 years and has worked for two U.S. Presidents and four U.S. Senators. She has served as an advisor to the George H.W. Bush administration and the George W. Bush White House, as well as General Counsel to the National Republican Senatorial Committee. She worked for Senator Trent Lott while he was Majority Leader in 1999 and handled health policy for Senator Jeff Sessions in 2003 and 2004.

Rogers’ background is an ideal fit for the Secular Coalition for America, now in its 10th year.  She has a proven track record of managing coalitions and implementing nation-wide strategies. In her most recent roll as Executive Director of the Patient Centered Primary Care Collaborative, she organized a coalition that included major employers, consumer groups, labor unions and health care providers. In this position she also planned and implemented a successful 50-state strategy.

In 2010, she also made an appearance on the short-lived “Real Housewives of Washington D.C.” series on Bravo. Here’s a clip from the show:

“For too long, the 50 million secular Americans have been ignored, under-appreciated and undervalued — that’s what drew me to the Secular Coalition for America,” Rogers proclaimed in a press release that announced the decision. “It’s time to change that. Secular Americans are increasingly pulling together as a voting bloc that demands attention — a constituency that is due formidable representation in Washington, D.C.”

For anyone doubting that atheist activists are attempting to organize more readily than ever before, Rogers’ comments, alone, solidify this ideal. The SCA has openly proclaimed that it would be prudent if atheists could gain as much power and prominence as the AARP — a goal Rogers’ connections would certainly help the group move towards.

According to the SCA, the newly-minted executive director is an advocate for the separation of church and state and, thus, will be a strong tool for advancing the organization’s agenda. But for those who are surprised that a Republican would occupy such a controversial role, Rogers seems unfazed.

“Secular issues are not partisan issues,” she said in the release. “All Americans should be concerned about protecting our most basic rights and I want to bring that message to politicians of all stripes.”

You say politics and religion have nothing to do with each other while at the same time the article is about a “political lobbying group for athiesm”. Get it? You are doing the very thing u say you hate. Athiesm IS a religion whether u admit it or not. Atheism says anything goes, especially sodomy.
Christians dropped the ball in this country and let the heathen rein. Its time they start acting like Christians again. Because we cannot except adults who live like hell teaching, influencing, and guiding the next generation of innocents. We cannot except morals to be eroded any further in this country. Trust me Bruce, nobody hates you or your kind. Its NOT about hate. It’s about LOVE. We need to love the next generation (our kids and grandkids) too much to let this happen!

Just another special interest group that wants special rights.

Glad she is taking their money. She will only have the progressives in Congress to work with – like they really need a lobbyist for that!

Atheists continue their war on Christianity but they fail to realize they are rousing a sleeping giant.

Atheists; please keep wasting your money on being obnoxious instead of dealing with the real problems that this nation faces. It shows us your real colors.

Continue to disrespect fallen soldiers that gave their lives for this country. Continue to go after a prayer that is asking God to help someone be a better person. Continue to go after the very foundations that gave you your inalienable rights. You are destroying the very society that nurtured you. All of this speaks volumes about you.

    God Bless.

The reason she will only have progressives to work with is because the conservatives have decided to embrace religious bigotry, would rather turn away atheists despite these same atheists sharing the same political beliefs.

There is no “war on Christianity.” That atheists and secularists do not want religion forced upon us, and will fight to protect our rights is not a “War on Christianity.” Christians may worship as they please but they cannot force it upon anyone else.

Of course there is Bruce. This is just furthering the attempt to “cleanse/purge” religion from the history and culture of this nation. Atheists do not even have respect for those that died to preserve their rights to be an atheist.

Nothing is being forced on you. This is the society you were born into. A Western Christian Civilization that has nurtured all. Over the past 40/50 years atheists/secularists efforts to “cleanse/purge” Christianity from this nation has done nothing but contribute to the erosion of a civil/moral society. Atheism/secularism has nothing to offer Western Christian Civilization/culture. It is full of negativisms and is intentionally antagonistic and belligerent.

Where is this supposed purge/cleansing of Christianity? Can Christians still attend church as they please, worship as they please, marry, hold office and still have the right to evangelize?

That atheist stand up for their rights to not have religion force upon them is not a “cleansing” of Christianity. You are only upset you do not hold a privileged place to force it upon others.

The rights you speak of are unique in the world and in the history of the world. It is only in Western Christian civilization that these inalienable rights are given to an individual. In a non-Western Christian civilization or an atheistic government, they would laugh at you.

The only right atheists are standing up for is the right to silence Christians. You will not even leave the dead alone and the honor they are accorded.

Your rights do not trump my rights.

As you say we “still” have our churches. For now or perhaps you want what the secular/atheists have in Sweden, an atheist must be on the local parish council. Children are not boys or girls they are gender neutral “hens”.

Christians will push back and I thank you for uniting us on this.

The reality is the atheists/secularists are the ones who are “forcing” their beliefs on non-atheists.
No one is forcing anything on atheists. It is a false narrative that atheists are trying to create. (false narrative = a big lie)

All I can say is that may you live under the cold hand of an atheistic/secularist government, perhaps then you will appreciate the country you live in.

      God Bless

Atheists are trying to silence Christians? Please, tell us when you have been silenced? You haven’t. Not allowing you to force your religion on others is not “silencing you.”

“Your rights do not trump my rights”

No one is taking away your rights. We have every right to fight against religion being forced upon us. You have NO RIGHT to attempt to force it on us. You have no right to tell us how to live, how to think, or what to believe. You are absolutely correct, my rights do not trump your rights. But my rights do trump the tyranny you would seek to impose upon others.

“For now or perhaps you want what the secular/atheists have in Sweden, an atheist must be on the local parish council.”

That is Sweden. Let’s talk about America, not what is unique to Sweden (whether or not that is true. Your lot tends to believe anything…) But you damn well better believe I’d fight against any such law in the United States.

“The rights you speak of are unique in the world and in the history of the world. It is only in Western Christian civilization that these inalienable rights are given to an individual.”

Those rights are not Christian rights. They are born of the Enlightenment. Those freedoms on which our country is founded are nowhere to be found in the Bible. Please, tell us where we can find freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of choice in the Bible. Where are they? They don’t exist because they are not Christian ideals.

Bruce P you are so close minded you will not admit anything. Of course Atheists are trying to silence Christians. Have you not heard that atheists do not even want a benediction at a graduation? Are you not one of those atheists that tell Christians leave you religion at your church it doesn’t belong in the public or in politics? You will not even leave the dead heroes alone.

The list can go on. You are just in denial.
You keep repeating the lie that Christians are “forcing” their religion on you. No one is forcing anything on atheists. One day you may wake up but your post show your hated for Christianity that is blinding your rational thought.

As for Sweden, you should know that secularization first spread in Europe and is continuing to weaken those nations and is being pushed here with disastrous results to our society.
You must be very very young to think the enlightenment was the reason we have our rights. You are ill taught. Research Lex Rex by Samuel Rutherford, a Presbyterian Minister. This is the basis for Democratic Limited Government.

Search for the truth instead of what you have been indoctrinated with.
I answer close minded atheists as yourself knowing full well that it will not make a difference with that person but it encourages my brothers and sisters in Christ to see the answers and help them along as well as for open minded atheists/agnostics.

These people should not be called Atheists, because that is not what they are. I am an Atheist, I do not believe and never have but I don’t have anything against religion. I hate the fact that there are people out there driving religious expression out of every facet of our lives.

These people are crusading zealots, they refuse to accept anything but their beliefs (which in this case in non belief) and attempt to convert or destroy anyone of a different faith. True Atheists, just don’t believe, they are not offended nor concerned with what other people believe. Just like most Christians I know and not running about shoving their beliefs in other people’s faces and forced them to convert or be destroyed.

For those of you with faith, don’t ever let them take it away from you.

You proclaim that either we must be Christian (let’s not pretend you meant any faith. We all know what you meant) or we shall lose our rights. That is a false dichotomy. It is not an either/or proposition, as the rights we enjoy are not Christian ideals, being found nowhere in the Bible. If anything, Christians (in this thread) have shown they do not believe these rights to be God-given to all people, but only themselves.

I do not believe in God but I do know the rights we enjoy are not man-given, they are intrinsic to all people, our birthright as human beings, regardless of race, faith or sexual orientation.

No matter what you say, atheism is not synonymous with liberalism. Why is that concept so difficult for you to grasp? Now read tjhe last sentence in the article: “Secular issues are not partisan issues,” she said in the release. “All Americans should be concerned about protecting our most basic rights and I want to bring that message to politicians of all stripes.”
      Good night and good luck.

What in the article suggested she has liberal tendencies? Absolutely nothing. Atheism does not make one liberal. Stop with the moronic religious litmus-tests that are only hurting you.

The US Founders never would have imagined an American elite so corrupt that they would dissolve the people and import a new one. But how about the WHITES? There future?

    How is this not genocide:
White countries are being flooded by non-whites. We are told to be TOLERANT. We are forced to integrate.

With assimilation we see the extinction of one race only, the white race. Its not funny, not comedy, its white genocide.

The US the largest terrorist sponsoring state. The good citizens of the Republic are hell mad angry about the domestic terrorism sponsored by executive order coming from the Washington gangsters.
We have multiple acts of Constitutional treason unresolved.

Sooo, atheists need to be represented for having no ‘beliefs’ in anything…if they do not believe in anything, what is there to be represented, non belief?..So, we have a group demanding rights for not ‘believing’ in anything…Why do they care so much to be heard if they do not believe in anything… shouldn’t they not care what others think or believe?…What others think or ‘believe’ should be irrelevant to an atheist, also known as a non-believer.

I think you might be lumping an entire group of people into a category based on a few in-your-face types. Might want to check that. I feel pretty confident in saying that many “non-believers” are of the live and let live mindset.

It’s ridiculous to think “pushing atheism down peoples’ throats” means stopping Theists from doing exactly that.

There are many atheists, like myself, who don‘t care what you believe or don’t believe(as long as it doesn’t involve blowing people up). Then you have the evangelical atheists, like the late M. O’Hare, who are generally tied to socialist groups.

Aaaaah! That ever present yet tired and empty attack. How can you rally around anything? Well, for starters, secularists don’t stand for nothing. One of their goal is to prevent the encroachment of religion on civil society. And judging from the constant attacks from the fundies (from “personhood” bills to the teaching of the so-called “intelligent design” in public schools), we need them more than ever.

Thank you…..your points are well taken…Atheists and Secularists are not one and the same…’Atheism is about not believing any god or gods exist. It is the opposite of theism, which is the belief that at least one god exists. A person who rejects belief in gods is called an atheist’…’Secularism is the principle of separation between government institutions and the persons mandated to represent the State from religious institutions and religious dignitaries.’……I get the secular part….that is ‘Common Sense’…its the Atheists I don’t get crying out for representation….but I fear it is the old ‘Maypole’ argument…round and round we go…thanks for the input.

No Surpise! Progressives can be found in the GOP… where they advodate moving beyond the Constitution… rejecting the Intelligence & Morality of the Founders… and support Socialism. So, once down that path… supporting Atheism is an easy step!

Hey it is just a professional business woman practicing capitalism and being paid for what she does. You think political strategists actually believe most of the garbage that is said or think the tactics they recommend are honorable or ethical. What is missing in political discourse and especially economic and free market analysis is values and social utility. It is also what is missing in the ideological citizenship that is being practiced by individuals from all sides of the political spectrum.

Agreed! This was my favorite line:

“The well-known lobbyist is revered in GOP circles on Capitol Hill.”

Um, how ’bout if our elected representatives not actually “revere” lobbyists. Would be kinda nice if we got back to a reverance for God in this country. But with SCA no having a “voting bloc” I don’t see us heading in that direction.

I guess I don’t get it. Yes, it’s ironic but businesses generally hire the best person for the job, right?

Oh, wait. Maybe in the real business world. In the lib business world they have to fill quotas. Maybe this was a quota fill?
