Surprising Poll Shows Bachmann Nearly Ties Romney in Iowa

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A new Iowa Poll shows national Republican presidential frontrunner Mitt Romney and tea party favorite Michele Bachmann leading among the state’s likely GOP caucus-goers.

The poll conducted for The Des Moines Register shows Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, with support from 23 percent in Iowa. Bachmann, the Minnesota representative who plans to launch her campaign in Iowa on Monday, has support from 22 percent.

Romney was the No. 2 finisher in the caucuses in his bid for the 2008 GOP nomination. Bachmann is a three-term congresswoman and newer face in the 2012 White House mix.

The results are based on telephone interviews with 400 likely Republican Iowa caucus-goers from June 19 to 22. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.9 percentage points.

Romney has said he plans to run a scaled-down Iowa campaign, compared to the all-out, $10-million effort he waged for the 2008 caucuses.

Tim Pawlenty has been the most aggressive about campaigning in Iowa, having lined up top Iowa and national consultants, been a frequent visitor to the state and ran the 2012 campaign’s first Republican candidate television advertisements last week.

However, only 6 percent of Iowa Republicans expected to attend the 2012 caucuses prefer the former Minnesota governor as their choice, according to the poll.

Former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich, whose campaign has struggled since widespread staff departures this month, has support from 7 percent, the same as Texas Representative Ron Paul.

Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum has 4 percent, followed by former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, who has said he will not campaign in Iowa, with 2 percent.

Editor’s note: This AP story did not include the information that the Des Moines Register poll ranks Herman Cain in third place with 10 percent.

    I would be happy with a Bachmann/West ticket, or a West/Bachmann ticket. I want the next President to NOT be a Progressive, so that would rule out Romney, and Huntsman. Newt Gingrich seems to have lost all chance of being the Republican nominee.

    Of course I would also vote for “anyone but Obama”. The USA was in a horrible recession, and his solution was to “tax and spend” our way out of it, (didn’t work), AND burden us with a brand new entitlement program – Obama Care, that we didn’t want, and can’t afford.

      The Grey Ripper….Actually I’ve just come around to Paul in the last couple of months. What I like about Paul is that he isn’t beholden to anyone. He speaks his mind, damn the consequences. We’ve had 4 consecutive progressives as President….I voted for 2 of them…Papa Bush and W….Having Paul as President ( I know it’s unlikely), I believe we wouldn’t have to worry about him overstepping his executive responsiblities and so forth…..I know my above post looked abit cultish…but I don’t always feel like typing much..I’m a terrible typer…Regardless of who wins….I won’t be counting on one individual to save this country..It may not be savable as we have known it. I put my trust in God. The only thing that can hinder me in achieving success and happiness is myself….Later

      By the way….I don’t know an awful lot about any of the candidates. i pick up a little here and there. It’s still early. Of course I want a true conservative…someone who uses the Constitution as their guide, and strives to do what’s right for our beloved country….but I’d rather have an honest liberal than a corrupt conservative.Our Constitution, by design, protects us from ideological extremes. It‘s only when we go beyond the constitution is when we’re in trouble. CORRUPTION in government has always been our main enemy.

I generally ignore them because I don’t want to get into a p*****g match with anyone whose best arguements consist of childish insults. You handle it well. You are obviously a rational and intelligent conservative and I’m pretty sure that as you look further into the candidates, Ron Paul will stand out from the pack even more.

    The State-run AP calls MICHELLE BACHMAN the “tea party favorite”. She’s a lot more than that. She has 40 million Evangelicals behind her as well. And the so called “tea party” in itself includes the broad majority of America. You do the math.

      You can’t go wrong with Ron Paul. If he doesn‘t get the nomination I’m writing him in. Some people like to say that is wasting a vote and could actually help Obama, but the way i see it is any vote for a status quo politician (which describes the entire field in both parties – except Ron Paul) is the real wasted vote. I know when I write in “Ron Paul” I leave the voting booth knowing that I voted for the best candidate and if I lose, it’s not my fault when our Constitutional Republic dissapears completely.

    How about a Bachman/Santorum or West ticket? She walks the talk. That would be two real conservatives that make sense and don’t speak out of both sides of their mouth.

    She would be the first woman to get a presidential bid and the odds would be great that she would get the female vote: definitely don’t want a RINO, Romney, Perry or Christie (for his future run).

    Don’t believe this poll. Really the only poll out there to follow is Rasmussan. He continues to get it right, much to the propagandizing White House controlled media. The race in Iowa is between Cain, Bachman. Romney will finish poorly there. If Perry gets in that will change some things. If McCotter gets in watch out, it will get crazy. If Palin gets in all bets are off. Just know this that freakin Rhino Romney will not win in Iowa.

    Romney may win in New Hampshire because a lot of the idiots from NY and Massachusetts moved there. So that State has lost its way. But the South and mid west Romney is done.

This will keep most liberals at home on election day celebrating because they have victory either way. their only concern is that there’s a black in the white house.       I agree with her on most issues but I can’t get past the blatant violation of the Constitution (Patriot Act) that she supports. Any politician who is willing to violate the Constitution even once will not hesitate to do it whenever it suits them. For me, when it comes to violating the Constitution it’s – one strike, you’re OUT.
      No one in this election has a chance at my vote except Ron Paul.

      Libs don’t “hate” Michele Bachmann. Most of us would LOVE her to be the Republican nominee who runs against Obama in 2012, thus run against his record of legislation signed into law that supports women’s rights.. Women who care about/look at women’s issues see that the women on the R side have voted pretty much uniformly against bills that give women rights to fair pay, vs. strengthening enforcement of sexual assault laws protecting Native-American women, vs. the ability for women to file lawsuits vs. rapists AND Republicans are trying to AGAIN redefine rape. Low-income, or any women, who get preventive care through Planned Parenthood also see the assaults the Republicans are waging on their services. In light of all that, let’s hope Michele is THE nominee!!

      I agree– I heard Ms.B on Fox-and on Face the Nation– her views on Gay Marriage were expressed aptly reflecting my own views NO “confusion ” about it. IF New York wants to lead the nation to perdition they ought not have Federal support in that effort. Where is the “basic right” for any person to have their corrupted conscience recognized by any State- -or by EVERY State. So, my experience with Iowans of all types is… We are: say it like it is folks, your expected to know the truth, you are taught to know what value is, we love a good joke (I mean a good joke), we are self sufficient, we are caring as in the real kind of caring, and we like to live in peace but know when to speak up and we don’t like being run over or lied to.

      INTERESTING SITUATION BECAUSE THEY NEED EACH OTHER

      Romney needs more of the base, even though they will vote for anyone but Obama he still needs the help rallying the base. While she needs help rallying the rest of the republicans and independents.       NOTE: The truth is Romney is a conservative, though pulls a little more moderate than some like, non the less he has always been a fiscal conservative and the controversies that people bring up are not so **** and dry. This because of the liberal media not telling the whole story. 1) He does not believe in man-made global warming – he believes in the changing of the climate as we discussed in earlier posts, which most of the viewers praised. 2) He has already said that there were many mistakes in RomneyCare but his state wanted it and still supports it by 63%. 3) He is pro-life, he hasn’t fought for abortion since he was running against Ted Kennedy in 94, even in 2004‘s election he wasn’t pro-choice he took the Mitch Daniels pledge not to make any changes for or against if he was elected, that is not to say he is pro-choice but that was the only way they would elect him but while in office he fought for pro-life issues including fighting against the morning after pill, etc.

      Don’t believe what the media is feeding us. Romney is a conservative, though more moderate, and as a Tea Partier in Alaska, we will support him if he is chosen as the GOP Presidential Candidate.

      One more thing, he has the best record fiscally in both the market place and as governor.

      I really hope Bachmann does well. I know she is conservative enough for us. I just hope she is strong enough to beat Obama. I am really not worried about losing to Obama legitimately but I do worry about
      about Soros and all the dead people voting etc. It concerns me because we absolutely cannot take four more Years. Can you imagine what it would be like withe Obama if he didn’t have to worry about

      Any who think Romney is a conservative, should look carefully at what he did in Massachusetts. As a Mass resident I can attest and the record is clear. He made no effort to support conservative State or Federal House and Senate candidates, gave us Romney Care, and ever increasing budgets. Not once did government get smaller under his leadership!!       Yes I had hopes for Romney, I thought he did a better job on answering the healthcare issue this time around but the global warming put me over the edge. I don‘t know if she can win out of the House but I wouldn’t mind her joining Cain as his VP or vice versa.
      I can’t help feel deja vu, Bush insulted real conservatives with the “compassionate” label for himself and so I guess we are not compassionate. Romney gives me the same sick feeling of being duped.

      fastfact…..you said Romney just believes in the changing climate??? He said he believe that the earth is getting warmer and that humans are part cause of it. He has no facts because there are none!!! It is a man made hoax. They are pushing this lie and duffuses are believing it. Crud, I beilieved it until I educated myself and the emails showing the so called grant paid scientists lying about their findings. And why did they not want to release their findings for years, because there were no findings. So Romney wants to blame me for heating my home in the winter or driving my grandma to the doctor.       What I hope to see is Michelle win. But if she does she’ll be a one term President because of tough decisions she will be forced to make. If she has the communication skills of a Regan maybe she will make the second term. But here is my prediction based on current polls. The truth we may not want in the short term mixed with a real blessing in the long term (IE: 2016):

      Mit gets the nomination.

      Mit is forced like McCain to pick Michelle for VP.

      The Mit Bachmann team beats Obama.

      Mit plunges in polls for reasons that will be due to his liberal streak and double dealing while Michelle just by her own personal charm, honesty, and principles will rise.

      Romney resigns through pressure giving Michelle a shot at a 2016 Presidential run.

      Bachmann gets elected in 2016! Now people then will be all too eager to see true conservativism restored on a permanent basis with the IRS being repealed along with Obamadosen’tcare (during Romneys term) and the Dept. of Ed being abolished along with all the other Marxist Departments (IE: EPA) due to resultant sudden lack of funding. Also the FED will be broken up where the free enterprise spirit in the banking system will be restored after over 100 years of bondage, and chronie capitalism will die. Long live the Republic!

      I like Bachmann but feel she’s a bit too “nice” once it begins getting dirty. It is only a thought, but I think she might get eaten alive if she ends up being the nominee.

      We know Palin can handle the heat because her response is always, “Thank you sir. May I have another?” She almost embraces the attacks.

      But, if you’re forcing me to choose from the current disappointing crop of nominees, I would support Bachmann.

      Michele has TWO law degrees…what the Lame Stream media tries to portray is the exact OPPOSITE of who this woman is.       a bit off topic, but I am sick and tired of Iowa and New Hampshire shaping the GOP nomination. By the time it gets to my state, there are candidates that are already out of the race, where results from other states may have kept them in or given them a boost.

      They need to run the caucuses all at the same time in every state, and narrow the field each time over the course of 2,3,4 votes. In my neck of the woods, we don’t get to hear what these cadidates say to folks in IA and NH – I want them all on the national stage, telling the entire population what they stand for, and what they will do as president. Many, many credible debates need to be broadcast, with a wide range of questions, not just the “hot topics” of discussion at the moment. Rolling into IA and NH with a crapload of money and telling the people there what they want to hear results in the the candidate with the better campaign managers and the most money to come out near the top. Its absolutely rediculous.

      I’m glad that you recognize that Michele (by voting for the Patriot Act) is weak on the Constitution. But then you want Allen West to run. He also voted for the Patriot Act. You also (correctly) recognize that Ron Paul is our best bet to protect the Constitution, but then you disparage him based on his looks? Seriously you would vote for someone to be President based on their looks?

      The Blaze seems to be loaded with people who claim to favor a return to the Constitutional Republic established by our founders but then support presidential candidates who violate the Constitution!

      Not that “surprising” given her excellent performance in the debate AND the fact that she is an Iowa native who is well known there. Also, the Iowa caucus tends to attract mainly the hard-core folks who are most into politics. That’s quite a different crowd than what you see in a state with an open (or practically open) primary.

      I will watch this with great interest, but I would not draw any conclusions from this. We still have a field of candidates that lacks any one strong front-runner. Therefore, anything can happen. Just wait until Rick Perry jumps in.
