Surveillance Vid Shows 71-Year-Old Concealed Carry Holder Opening Fire on Would-Be Robbers

Samuel Williams could soon become a poster child for concealed carry. Or rather a poster senior citizen.
Williams is being hailed as a hero this week after he sprung into action on Friday to thwart an armed robbery at an internet cafe. Williams was present when two masked thugs walked into the Palms Internet Cafe in Marion County, Florida. One of the men was brandishing a gun while the other had a bat. They started ordering patrons around and one smashes a computer screen. That’s when Williams took action.
Ocala.com explains what happened:
Williams was seated toward the back of the cafe dressed in a white shirt, shorts and baseball cap.
One of the masked men, identified as Duwayne Henderson, 19, comes in pointing a handgun at customers. The second man, Davis Dawkins, 19, is seen swinging a bat at something off screen, which was later identified as a $1,200 computer screen.
As Henderson turns his back, Williams pulls out a .380-caliber semi-automatic handgun, stands from his chair, takes two steps, nearly drops to one knee, and fires two shots at Henderson, who bolts for the front door.
Williams takes several more steps toward the door and continues firing as Henderson and Dawkins fall over one another trying to exit the building. The two eventually run off screen.
Surveillance video captured it all:
Both of the crooks suffered non-life threatening gunshot wounds and were later captured. And according to police, Williams — a licensed concealed carry gun owner — won’t face any repercussions.
“Based on what I have seen and what I know at this time, I don’t anticipate filing any charges,” Bill Gladson of the State Attorney’s Office, told Ocala.com.
But he’s not the only one talking. Some of the customers are. And they’re grateful for what Williams did.
“I think he is wonderful. If he wouldn’t have been there, there could have been some innocent people shot,” said Mary Beach.

Ocala.com also has an interview with one of the robbers, Duwayne Henderson. In it, Henderson describes the robbery from his perspective:
“I feel horrible. It doesn’t feel good. It makes you think about life’s decisions, and how you should live your life,” Henderson said in an interview with the Star-Banner at the jail on Saturday afternoon.
Hours after his release from the hospital, Henderson, who talked about the pain he feels in his buttock and hip, said the plan was to “barge in, get the money and leave.” He said “he never expected anyone to be armed.”
“The gun was broken and rusty and wasn’t loaded. Nobody was going to get hurt,” he said, standing with crutches.
Retrieving the customers’ phones was what he said was their “main priority.” That way, he said, the customers could not call law enforcement officials.
Henderson theorizes the reason why he was caught off guard is because, when Dawkins entered the business, he busted a computer monitor with the baseball bat and “glass got into his face.”
“He couldn’t warn me,” Henderson said.
With the glass temporarily blinding his friend, Henderson noticed two women were behind the counter and he thought that was “fishy.” Turning around to see what the women were doing, Henderson said he was shot.
“I turned around to run and my
leg gave out. That was when I got shot. I hit the ground, and he was still shooting. I thought I was going to die,” Henderson said.
Henderson said that, “by the grace of God,” his “leg came back.”
“I ran,” he said.

He and his counterpart, Davis Dawkins, fled to a friend’s house and were eventually apprehended. Henderson says Dawkins used to be an employee at the cafe and knew there would be money on hand.
And even though Henderson seems to be carrying some remorse, he still has a bone to pick with Williams, the elderly man who shot him, for firing while he (Henderson) was on the ground.
“I was down, and I’m not going to continue to shoot you,” he said.
A piece of information Williams didn’t have the luxury of knowing.

In this situation one should not “shoot to kill” or “shoot to wound” but to stop the threat. To imply otherwise suggest that the victim may have committed a crime.

Let me clarify my incorrectly worded statement. I meant to imply (did NOT “misspeak” as the left does) and SHOULD have written out completely what I meant: We are standing our ground and will be coming after you in November (through the election process). Sorry, guys; my fault.
I DO AGREE with your saying that we civilians can/must stand our ground and let the military and trained officials like police do the “going after”.

2. Shoot to kill is the only response. The Lone Ranger doesn’t exist. Extra shots at the target increases the odds that the threat is eliminated. Double tap went out the window many years ago. If your clip holds 10 rounds, shoot 6 or 7 and then quickly drop the magazine and reload.

Report Post »I’m sure it was an oversight but the military cannot legally go after criminals in this country. Also, I did not see in this video that the dear old gentleman (with his, beautiful for the occasion, .380 handgun) as “going after” the criminals. He was focused on protecting himself and all the other patrons that were in danger with the defensive weapon he carried. The only way to do that was to shoot the bastards and to keep shooting the bastards with his light .380 until he was completely assured that the criminals had decided to depart the scene. Had a police officer been in that situation, he would have crouched, used his Glock .40 and the criminals would have been lying bleeding on the store floor. The small 2 in barrel .380 automatic is perfect for a 71 year old but he would need to keep firing for assured defense. The dear old gentleman did everything right with his .380.

Great job of hitting both perps during a high tension situation. For all you .45 or bigger guys, we have just seen an example of a .380 is much better than nothing at all. Couple of hits on two perps out of a gun that hold 7 or 8 rounds, good shooting!

They were big on bravado when they thought they had brought a gun to a computer fight… :) But how they can move when the tables are turned! My, my, my aren’t they quick? One of the morons had his gun pointed right at O.W.G. but panicked when the bullets started coming from the ‘wrong’ direction. That’s MY America!
I am happy that they will live. Perhaps they will have learned something important. If they don’t, it won’t be for lack of a really, really good lesson and a God given second chance. I have my CC permit and am never without my little 9mm Kahr. It is accurate and reliable and very fun to shoot- at targets at least… :) Some put down the 9mm but many cops use it and I can‘t imagine that the hollow points in my little auto won’t do a hell of a lot of damage. Anything else is just too big to carry day in and day out. I truly hope that I am never in a position to have to use it like O.W.G. but if I unfortunately am one day, I pray that I am just as decisive and aggressive as him while keeping a functional awareness of bystanders.
This is a direct result of what Progressives have done for us and society. They have ruined it, necessitating the carrying of such weapons. Perhaps soon we will be completely fed up with what they have done. Enough to return to the Constitution, sanity and common sense. TEA!

These 2 young guys were about to get on the computers when the blind old man got them mixed up with the robbers. They want to sue him thru the Justice Dept. Since the Treyvon-Zimmerman deal, Holder is saying we need a new Fereral law to stop these state carry laws. Here in Oklahoma , come Nov. 1st our new open carry law goes into effect. I’v picked out my Ruger Blackhawk .30 cal carbine revolver and have bought a holster. My wife has a .38 Lady Smith in her purse and I will continue to carry my double barrel derringer in my boot.

People make way too much out of caliber. Is there a difference? Sure, but it would be unwise to make your personal defense firearm selection solely off of caliber. People hear stories of perps being shot multiple times with 9mm and make the assumption that the 9mm is weak and can’t kill a man. Of course there are also real life instances (not as many of course) of men being shot multiple times with a .45 and surviving, that doesn’t make the .45 weak though it just shows that shot placement (being accurate with your firearm) is at least as important if not more so than caliber. If you want to shoot .45 go for it, if you prefer 9mm, 38 spec, etc then carry that. And don’t forget that you have the option of using a wide range of expanding self defense rounds that can more than make up for smaller diameter. Just don’t get pulled into the .45 cal or nothing hype, after all if caliber was all that mattered then we should all be carrying desert eagles.

That is why you never aim your gun at another living thing unless you intend to kill or are willing to take the responsibility of the resulting death. This is all covered in the gun safety training every CCW licensed person and Boy Scout gets. The first rule is ALL GUNS ARE LOADED. Even if you are sure the gun is not loaded, it is still loaded.

ANYTHING is better than NOTHING and to Sam, it may have seemed like he had a canon not to mention what he could or could NOT afford.
My father-in-law keeps a VERY small 25 colt in his drawer and feels safe with it and feels that if confronted he will tell the perp to make his day (bad choice I admit, but – STILL – better than nothing!
Keep in mind a small caliber such as a .22 will usually not leave the body and a perp will HAVE TO go to a Dr. or a hospital for treatment. OR….a .22 simply enters the head cavity and bounces around totally wiping out the brain. Also, the ricochet of large caliber bullets is much more disastrous to innocent civilians involved than the smaller calibers.
Choices always have consequences and MUST be weighed for each encounter. ;-))

Game hunters use high velocity rifles with heavy bullets, so that the animal don’t keep running and get lost to die in the woods. Police use a gun that will drop drugged or insane thugs quickly to avert danger for themselves and others. Each type gun that is sold has a reputation for a specific use. The .380 is very small and slim but with hollow point ammo is perfect for conceal carry. It will kill anyone but generally unless a vital spot is hit, it will not drop them on the spot. The heavier guns are harder to conceal but will drop them on the spot due to their delivery of higher kinetic energy and shock power.

You watched to many dumb cop shows that were not real. There is no such thing as shooting to wound people. No police in the nation, or our military ever, ever, ever train to wound people. Gun shots are very dangerous, and anywhere on the human body that you aim, is considered deadly force. Show me a legit target that police, military, or civilians use, that award points for leg shots. There is no such thing. The “X” ring is always center mass of the chest, and/or head. You shoot to neutralize the threat. Shots to the heart, brain, and pelvic region are stopping shots.
Even if folks did train to shoot in the leg, a gun shoot wound to the upper leg can still kill you. Iraqi snipers aimed for the upper leg, being Americans wear armor on the chest and head. No shortage of American soldiers bleeding out from upper leg wounds.
Once again, there is no such thing as wounding shots., You shoot to neutralize the threat, no wound it.

He was using a .380 not a 9mm. although the diameter of the projectile is roughly the same; ballistics are completely different.
saying a .380 is a 9mm is like saying a .44special is the same thing as a .44Mag or that a .22Lr is the same thing as a .223Rem.
That being said shot placement is much more important than caliber selection.

Seriously, some of the comments above are a little frightening. For example, unload 6 or 7 rounds of a 10 round magazine (it is not a clip to those that call it that) and then release and reload. Sorry, wrong response. You can only use enough force to eliminate the threat. If the subject is no longer a threat, you cannot just keep filling them full of holes. The standard is two to center mass and if that doesn’t work, one to the ocular cavity. You should never fire a warning shot or shoot to wound. Yes, defend yourself and protect others but, know the laws, your abilities and responsibilities.

It’s what you are willing to carry and the amunition that use in the gun. I have tested the Hornady Critical Defense round and I‘ll tell you that’s one nasty bullet. I shot it against the all of the above guns and the .380 stacked up very nicely for damage and penetration. Of course, it’s what you are willing to carry in the first place. If he had a .22, those Bozos still would have fallen all over themselves trying to escape!

Best gun for a situation is one you’ll actually have on you. A 45 (or by extension, a Des Eagle) is likely to be at home, while folks with small, light, concealable 380s, 32s, 25s & 22s are far more likely to be actually carrying them, since they’re
1) far more concealable
2) far more continuously carryable
Keltec & Seecamp 32s (e.g.) are concealable, small & light enough to carry continuously without annoyance & without a holster. They go right in & come right out of a pocket and are safe to carry there.
They’re as functional for DETERRENCE as a 45, and stats & reason show deterrence is where it’s at. 2 million defensive uses/yr; vast bulk of which don’t involve shooting anyone. Few criminals will volunteer to catch a 32 or for that matter a 22.
It’s irrational to insist citizens choose weapons based on a chance of meeting a PCP-head. That story isn’t the norm & 45s can fail to drop them too.
The idea is CONCEALED carry with or without an unconstitutional “permit”. Decent folks in commie states like CA & NY are far more likely to be victimized by government than by criminals, if they carry a gun likely to be noticed by police (45, 50 or a big 9). Still a funny statement as is. A flintlock was an assault weapon it it’s day. The video in the link mentioned nothing about the weapon. Although Tuscaloosa has a large and dangerous non-student criminal element. He probably could have gotten one though. He apparently did not know what he was doing, or he would have killed his singular intended victim, or if he didn’t car he could well have killed a number of people. Accidents do happen when lethal force is being used in tense situations. It could also be that — unlike in this situation where the robbers‘ gun wasn’t functional nor loaded — the robber could, if not mortally wounded, start shooting once he’s hit, and hurt people he would not have hurt otherwise, if only he’d been left to take his $50 or $500, which is nothing compared to what life is worth. That is, it could be that more guns on the scene are not better than just one. These guys just wanted money, not to do a bunch of random shooting. That’s clear from the story. So don’t imagine that the man in white was actually saving any lives here. That’s not the case.

What blows me away is after the first shot, they guys are running, but the old man keeps shooting and won’t be charged. I don’t know about other states but in Kalifornia, you cannot shoot someone who is running away. The imminent (or in some states, immediate) threat of death or severe injury is over if they’re running away, so deadly force is no longer warranted.

I hope they go to jail for a good stretch and I hope they are not able to file a lawsuit agianst Mr. Samuel Williams, a true American hero. Of course what should happen is that they should be treated for their wounds, put on trial, and within the month hanged from a big ol’ oak tree on the town square with a placard around their neck telling their name, age, dob, and their crimes against society, then leave them hang until they start to reek. And as he chases the duo, and is not firing, the weapon is pointing up in a safe direction. And then he brings the weapon back down before firing a few more times. Always closing the distance and, as you noted, he did not retreat.

It goes bang eery time I pull the trigger and should these thugs have been shot with the .45 acp from the Glock 36, they would be in the bone yard. I have tried – plus the 380 fits in my purse, on my calf and in my hand much better than other guns. I am sure the adrenaline rush (that is kind of hard to recreate at the range) accounted for his marksmanship issue

Posted on July 17, 2012 at 9:41am.380 is a fine weapon that will hang out quite comfortably in your front or hip pocket without notice. Sure did seem to be the correct weapon in this case. The slugs really do a lot of tissue damage, and while a little short on knock down power, it is right there on top with convience, and fear factor. They look pretty big when you are looking at the wrong end of it.
