Bug-Out Bag. (Image: Uncrate)
Uncrate, a magazine “for guys who love stuff,” has quite the all-in-one survival kit that it says has everything you may need to not only “survive” but “thrive.” But is it really the motherload of survival kits? Some have thoughts for modifying it.
(Related: ‘Collapse’ preparations push skyrocketing survival gear sales)
First, here’s all it lists:
Okuma Voyager Spinning Travel Kit ($40). Ontario SP16 SPAX Firefighter Axe ($60).Steripen Adventurer Opti UV Water Purifier with Solar Charging Case ($120).Leatherman New Wave Multi-Tool ($60). MSR MiniWorks Microfilter ($90). Survival Seed Vault ($38). Adventure Medical Fundamentals Kit ($110). MSR Packtowl UltraLite($10 – $30). Snow Peak Titanium Spork ($9). Paisley Cotton Bandanas ($6). Mountain House 72-Hour Emergency Meal Kit ($49). McNett Gear Aid Tenacious Tape ($1 – $15).PROKNOT Outdoor Knots ($5). DMM ALPHA Quickdraw ($28). Suunto Global Compass($63). MSR Titan Pot ($112). Sierra Designs Tent Stakes ($10). Guyot Designs Bowl and Cup Set ($13 – $20). Petzl Tikka Headlamp ($53). Swedish Firesteel Scout Model ($6 – $20). COGHLANS Emergency Tinder Kit ($5). American Silver Eagle Coin in Air-Tite Capsule ($39). Cold Kukri Machete ($30). BIC Disposable Classic Lighter ($7). UTG Elite Tactical Leg Holster ($11). Smith Abrasives Diamond Combination Thumb Guard Micro Tool ($29). Type III Paracord ($12). Gregory Mountain Products Tarne Backpack ($140).Mammut Supernova Climbing Rope ($150). iOSAT Potassium Iodide Tablets ($8).Gregory Accessories Raincover ($30). Etón SCORPION Solar Powered Weather Radio($50). Mossberg 500 Pump-Action Shotgun ($500). Hennessy Explorer Deluxe A-Symmetrical Hammock ($177). MTM Survivor Dry Box ($15). Mountain Hardwear Phantom Sleeping Bag ($290 – $365). Sea to Summit Reactor Extreme Thermolite Liner($59). HK P2000 Pistol ($941). Hydrocodone ($TBD). Ciprofloxacin ($TBD). Atovaquone($TBD). Shotgun Shells ($TBD). 9mm Bullets ($TBD).
Although this “Apocalypse PAK” or “Bug-Out Bag” is well-equipped, fans of Uncrate’s Facebook had some thoughts on the bag. For one, they are upset that even though its website uses the words “stuffed into one bag,” there doesn’t appear to be a way to actually purchase it all together in the manner it is advertised — at least not yet. Others have said it has too many duplicate or unnecessary items that would add up to too much weight. Even with some suggestions of what the pack should get rid of or add, it still has more than 130 likes in less than 24 hours.
Earlier this year, author Brad Thor and Barrett Moore were on GBTV to discuss how to protect your identity and what you need to “prepare for a collapse.” Check out the clip:
This post has been updated to correct Barrett Moore’s last name. It was originally spelled incorrectly as Morris.

Posted on May 18, 2012 at 12:10pmThere’s a LOT of “preppy/city-boy“ crap in there that you can get at your local ”Army-Navy” store (if they still exist). There’s tons of old military equipment that you can buy for little or nothing, like a good backpack/ruck sack. Rather than sporting a $500 mossberg why not go with a $299 Remington Express (have a gun smith saw off the barrel if it’s too long for your taste). Having over 22 years in the Army I’d opt for a shotgun and extra shells rather than a 9mm.
This pack is missing a few things:
. entrenching tool (collapsible shovel for civilians).
Report Post ». an ax (boy’s ax is smaller) or large hatchet.
. saw.
. waterproof matches (what if your lighter malfunctions or gets lost?).
. sandwich bag full of steel wool (amazing for starting fires when wood is wet).
. sandwich bag full of dried wood (6″ 2X4 split into tiny pieces works best) for fire starting.
. gun powder (multiple purposes).
. small plastic magnifying glass (start fires).
. small non-breakable mirror.

Posted on May 18, 2012 at 12:24pmYears of hunting will prepare you for almost anything. Trust me… you will run out of toilet paper … and then what? You learn to find alternatives like leaves (yes you have to learn your tree types!). What did our fore-fathers do when crossing the great plains? You keep a piece of cloth with you that you can wash out in a river or stream.

Posted on May 18, 2012 at 5:08pmI’m sorry, but I only cound 12 rounds in that pic for the Mossberg (including the five on the stock).
I‘m not sure I’m thriving on 12 rounds.
The HK P2000 is a 9 mm pistol and you could do that for a couple hundred dollars cheaper by fimply buying an FNS (retail $650-ish)… come to think of it, you could go much cheaper on just about all of this by hitting up an Army/Navy store and using surplus gear.
If you can find a surplus woodland camo Modular Sleep System with the Goretex outer shell (I know, I know… just call ‘em the woodland Modular Sleep System), you could probably pick it up for $50 or less and it’s rated to about -20 F. That’s another $250 – $300.
Their 72 hours of food is $49, you could buy six or seven MRE’s for that (one of which is designed to be an entire day’s worth of calories).
Buy what I said instead of what they said, and you just saved $600-ish and got four more days of food. Shop a little more and you might save another $100 on the same items.
This looks expensive, folks, but i really doesn’t have to be.
Now’s the time that everyone, male and female, needs to think like a Boy Scout.
Be prepared.
God bless.

Report Post »There are many concerns to think about in the events of Disruption of services we have come to expect would always be there. It is almost impossible to prepare for every Geographic situation . But preparation for predictable events that will unfold on a predictable course can help improve your percentages to overcome changing situations.
Question: Armed or unarmed ?
Answer : Armed.
A Shotgun with its full stock and Barrel and a weapon you can conceal (hand gun)
Your Shotgun and Ammo stock should consist of 00 Shot and #6 or #8 shot.
Your Hand gun a 22 will be all you ever need for self defense if it comes out of nowhere.
The reason behind these Guns for choice is common sense. The last thing you want to do is attract a lot of attention and the noise of a High Powered gun carry’s a long way and the taking of large game when you have no way to store it is asking for trouble .
And a Shot Gun when used from a defensive position is just nasty business.
Having the 22 cal is one of the most under rated hand guns and you can carry 500 rounds in your pocket . Always be thinking you may have a lot of walking ahead of you .
And as moral support, invaluable .
A folding shovel . One of the biggest threats you face when the water stops coming out of the pipe is sanitation you have to burry your waste . The common house fly has killed more people then the Plague. And without the flow of Water and Refrigeration and Waste collection .

Posted on May 18, 2012 at 9:56amGreat points and agreed. The shot gun is like the swiss army knife of guns, you can do a little of everything with it, defense(slugs, double 00, rubber buck), shoot birds (shot), signal for help(flare rounds), Shoot larger game(slugs-you do have to get alittle closer), Breech ( lead dust rounds), and then again you have explosive rounds, and insindary rounds for fun and good measure. From a survivalist perspective the 9mm is the best hand gun to have, main reason: 9mm ammo is the most plentify ammo in the world, you can find it anywhere.
The whole bug out bag is good, but it needs more food and better water purifier (First Need brand is the best). Being an expert survivalist ( goto: Urbansurvivors.com) food and water are the items that go the fastest, and many on this board think that they can just use thier gun to go steal more is foolish thinking. They will just end up dead themselves . It is best to lay low and not go looking for trouble thinking because they are a bad @$$ and since they have a gun they can take what they need. Wrong, Dead wrong.

Mainly the guns and ammo but those you should go through a local gun shop or even cheaperthandirt.com. Some binoculars and gloves would be good along with a wetstone for shapening the machete, axe, and knives on the Leatherman and never underestimate the importance of mosquito netting. Bow, arrow, duct tape (you never know when you may need this), fishing line and fishhooks are other handy items.
The seed bank is likely only good if you are going to remain in one place for a long time and the lead in the ammo will weigh you down. The real trick will be to stay portable but the list is a great start.

The adverse effects included; tendon rupture, seizures, intestinal problems, tendonitis, anxiety, insomnia, muscle aches, depression and meniscus tears. The action alleged that Bayer failed to warn class members of the potential side effects of the drug, thereby violating the Pennsylvania Unfair Trade Practices and Consumer Protection Laws. That instead, someone won’t be running surveillance on you and sneak up behind you with a knife(shhh shhh shhh)? Maybe steal a car and drive it right through you front door? Posted on May 18, 2012 at 11:46amThere is nothing wrong with a .308. I prefer a 06 because of the availability of ammunition. I can go to any Walmart or any small town hardware store and get ammunition. The 22 is a very under rated weapon. You can get a brick of shells for cheap. You can get many different rounds for different situation. There are hyper velocity, sub sonics, and some that have not powder and can be used much like a pellet gun. Posted on May 18, 2012 at 1:02pmAnother important consideration: STAY IN SHAPE; STAY IN GOOD HEALTH. This is invaluable. You can’t bug out if you are going to fade in a day or two. Living outside in the elements is HARD. It was hard for me in my 20′s. If you are over 40, think about it. You’ll have to be in GREAT shape to endure living outside.
If you bug, you need to have a plan. Where are you going? If you live in a big city, you will need to bug out, no doubt. American cities are rotten and will be the scene of chaos. Outlying areas will be safer, but they will see hordes coming their way. And then there will be a decision by the inhabitants what to do. You have to be ahead of the hordes or you might not get through.

Posted on May 18, 2012 at 9:04amI agree, more of a problem though, if you are “bugging out” do you really want a LOUD weapon where everyone can hear where you are? Personally I say a small caliber Rifle is better and quieter if you know how to use it. Next, where is the magnifying glass? When you run out of matches and that magnesium stick how you gonna start fires? Magnifying glass will do it quickly even in winter. 3rd, water filtration kit? Really? What you gonna do when you need new filters? Better yet get 2 light weight bowls ( one fits inside the other with room to spare ) and clear plastic of any kind. Put water of any kind, even urine, in the bottom bowl, put the smaller bowl inside the larger and weigh it down slightly with anything. Copver this with clear lastic with a stone in the center. Leave in the sun. In a few hours you will have PURE water in the smaller center bowl. NO FILTER NEEDED EVER. These people have to think a little more practically.

Not a bad thing to have should I run off the road into a hidden area due to weather or road conditions. Just makes sense to be prepared, and the cost is literally so little considering. We work with the Boy Scouts a lot and rotate the MREs annually. Also keep a case of water bottles in the truck at all times. All of this is in the cab and it does not take up that much room. I have a CCL and am almost always armed with my SIG, but I do often keep a Mossberg 500 behind the back seat and plenty of ammo on hand. Posted on May 18, 2012 at 9:47amWhat .357 ‘never’ jams and has ‘fewer moving parts’ than a GLock or XD, or other semi-autos? I agree speed loaders can reload a revolver as quickly as a grip magazine- but you’ll have to reload three times to get one magazine load, so your reloads are going to slow you down. Just because your barrel is longer, does not mean a semi-auto isn’t good for as long a distance as your revolver. Not to mention the weight of the weapon and ammo.

Posted on May 18, 2012 at 12:49pmJOHNJAMISON, I bought my SIG P226 from the Vaihingen Rod & Gun Club in Germany in December ‘85. Have fired it to the point God only knows how many times. Even carried it while on a civilian police dept. Have never had it jam, and I beg to differ with you, an auto loading pistol has far fewer moving parts than a revolver. I will go along with you that the revolver is less likely to jam in any way. Many years ago I had a S&W Model 39 9mm. That danged thing was designed to do nothing but jam. As for your revolver having only 6 rounds one has to really practice a lot to be able to use a speed loader or take the time to drop one round at a time into the cylinder. I have revolvers too. I have a mag bag and a number of SIG’s 15 round mags, 2 of their 20 round mags, and a good collection of Mecgar 17 round Mags. Since the late ’90s or by 2000 Mecgar has had a contract with SIG to build their mags, so those are not cheap after market pieces of crap. The pistol at this moment with a 20 round mag and one in the chamber is in a holster that has an attached mag pouch where the other 20 mag is. Once I pick it up I have the weapon and 41 rounds at the ready. Loading an auto is mere muscle memory where one hand will always find the other hand. Again, there is no silver bullet to every situation, but I still prefer an auto loader. Just my humble opinion.

I can say without a doubt I can put 6 out of 7 in a 6 at 100 yards in under 8 sometimes seven.
I have to say that .375 with a .180 grain load is the strongest round I can fire and still stay on target.
I grew shooting my dad‘s Colt Python and that gun was surgical in it’s accuracy i guess that why I trust revolvers .
Had the 44 raging that was a beast and pretty accurate but way too much recoil to keep time and stay on target.
No matter enjoy practicing your second amendment right with whatever gun you chose just practice early and practice often and I’ll do the same.

Posted on May 19, 2012 at 7:14amJOHNJAMISON, Just as you have said, and I agree, it’s a matter of preference. As well I grew up shooting revolvers too and gained a respect for the .357 mag. All will learn what happens when a world economy collapses. Remember, Greece is just the beginning. People are capable of anything when their backs are against the wall and their children and families are hungry. If you happen to encounter a person who wants what you have and doesn’t care about anything else in life but getting it, you can stick your hand out and tell them to stop, but I’m guessing they would rather cut your hand off rather than listen to your outcries for help. Nobody intentionally wants to hurt someone else (unless they are purely evil). But there are a lot of people who will not hesitate to protect their families when approached by those whose only alternative is to do harm because they did not prepare themselves. When hungry and against the ropes……anyone…..and I mean anyone…..is capable of anything. Don’t underestimate how even a good person can be transformed into something unimaginable in a very short period of time.
Please…if you can…try and store up some food and water. It will not hurt to be prepared. If nothing happens, you will still be o.k.

Posted on May 18, 2012 at 8:50am@MOUSI.. I carry a bag like that in my trunk every day, because I have enough of the world to know I need one.
Your ignorance of the world, nature and the nature of men only make you a fool. Things as simple as a match have saved the lives of whole families. The ignorance you display only makes it obvious that you don’t understand your responsibly to care for the ones you love or you lack the guts to do so.
