Susan G. Komen Foundation Reverses Stance on Cutting Funding for Planned Parenthood

The Susan G. Komen for the Cure breast cancer charity has reversed its decision to halt funding of breast-screening grants to Planned Parenthood, the organization announced Friday.
In a statement, Komen for the Cure Founder and CEO Nancy Brinker apologized for “recent decisions” and said the organization would continue to fund Planned Parenthood.
“We want to apologize to the American public for recent decisions that cast doubt upon our commitment to our mission of saving women’s lives,” Brinker said.
The reversal comes after three days of intense backlash over Komen’s announcement that it had adopted new criteria that excluded Planned Parenthood from grants because it was under government investigation. Planned Parenthood is currently at the center of a congressional probe into whether taxpayer money was used to fund abortions. Brinker said Friday they would “amend the criteria to make clear that disqualifying investigations must be criminal and conclusive in nature and not political.”
“We will continue to fund existing grants, including those of Planned Parenthood, and preserve their eligibility to apply for future grants, while maintaining the ability of our affiliates to make funding decisions that meet the needs of their communities,” she said. While the statement says Komen will not halt current funding, it does not necessarily guarantee future grants.
Brinker’s full statement is below, via the Dallas Morning News, which first broke the story:
We want to apologize to the American public for recent decisions that cast doubt upon our commitment to our mission of saving women’s lives.
The events of this week have been deeply unsettling for our supporters, partners and friends and all of us at Susan G. Komen. We have been distressed at the presumption that the changes made to our funding criteria were done for political reasons or to specifically penalize Planned Parenthood. They were not.
Our original desire was to fulfill our fiduciary duty to our donors by not funding grant applications made by organizations under investigation. We will amend the criteria to make clear that disqualifying investigations must be criminal and conclusive in nature and not political. That is what is right and fair.
Our only goal for our granting process is to support women and families in the fight against breast cancer. Amending our criteria will ensure that politics has no place in our grant process. We will continue to fund existing grants, including those of Planned Parenthood, and preserve their eligibility to apply for future grants, while maintaining the ability of our affiliates to make funding decisions that meet the needs of their communities.
It is our hope and we believe it is time for everyone involved to pause, slow down and reflect on how grants can most effectively and directly be administered without controversies that hurt the cause of women. We urge everyone who has participated in this conversation across the country over the last few days to help us move past this issue. We do not want our mission marred or affected by politics – anyone’s politics.
Starting this afternoon, we will have calls with our network and key supporters to refocus our attention on our mission and get back to doing our work. We ask for the public’s understanding and patience as we gather our Komen affiliates from around the country to determine how to move forward in the best interests of the women and people we serve.
We extend our deepest thanks for the outpouring of support we have received from so many in the past few days and we sincerely hope that these changes will be welcomed by those who have expressed their concern.
As The Blaze previously reported, the charity was accused of caving to anti-abortion activists opposed to funding Planned Parenthood because of the abortion services it provides.
Friday’s announcement is a dramatic about-face for the organization. On Wednesday, Brinker released a video vowing Komen for the Cure would “never bow down to political pressure.”
“The scurrilous accusations being hurled at this organization are profoundly hurtful to so many of us who put our heart, soul and lives into this organization,” she said. “But more importantly, they are a dangerous distraction from the work that still remains to be done in ridding the world of breast cancer.”
According to the Associated Press, the grants that Planned Parenthood affiliates used for breast exams and related services totaled $680,000 last year. At least one top Komen official quit over the decision to halt funding, and 26 U.S. senators signed a letter urging the charity to reconsider.
Both Komen and Planned Parenthood reported donation spikes in the aftermath of the initial announcement: Brinker said Thursday donations had been up 100 percent in the last two days, while Planned Parenthood reported bringing in about $650,000 in 24 hours. New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg himself pledged $250,000 to Planned Parenthood in the wake of Komen’s decision.

Ask for money to kill babies and you won’t get much but, ask for money to beat cancer and it rains bucks. Haven’t you ever wondered where all that money has gone over the years and we still have cancer? Probably always will, not profitable to beat it.

Something about how Planned Parenthood has worked with us in great lengths to prolong in increase the value of a womans life while suffering from breast cancer… have mock survivors smiling or doing what they do worst like show Sinead O’Connor ripping a picture of PJPII, Yoko Ono and have her doing that stupid scream she did and label under it (Throat Cancer) Then show Pelosi (Label underneath Brain Cancer) and have her with Obama then fade out… Then jump in with “Speaking of girls, if you happen to be carrying one, while you’re at Planned Parenthood, we’ll be more than glad to remove that terrible burden from you. After all, its all about the quality of life for the female… Then in captions (We’ll do boys too) Fade to black then show Komen sign with Planned Parenthood superimposed turning red with blood dripping from the letters and end with a horrifying baby squealing.

I discovered that one of the families that we regularly visited with while waiting for our daily treatments was a family who were so poor that they did not own a REFRIGERATOR! Here we were fighting to help these children survive such a brutal disease, and there sat a family among us without even the most basic of needs to keep the poor child nutritionally well fed! I called the American Cancer Society to see what kind of help they could be in helping US get them a refrigerator…They told me that “That is simply not something that we do”…and…they didn’t even offer any suggestions or referrals! I could not believe it…after some further searching, my parents decided that the only right thing to do was to buy a refrigerator for them, have it delivered and installed…That is exactly what they did! Both my parents are gone now (on to their well-earned REWARDS)…there is much deceit in the world…but ultimately it comes down to doing it ourselves…which we are quite capable of doing!

All of these organizations intermingle with each other and each one filters off certain amounts for themselves, like slush funds. Obviously whomever is in control of the organizations sticks that in their pockets and it’s totally unaccounted for and tax free.Maybe the Komen director wasn’t getting enough money kicked back and thus the squabble. Think about it, you’ve got people giving you billions of dollars a year. The heads of these groups and researchers are making well into six fiqures a year. Do you think they’re going to be in any hurry to join the unemployed with a gig like this going on. As long as these people can keep sucking the money off the top no cure is coming soon. Don’t get me wrong they have made progress, but what incentive is there for them to find a end for this disease. For those that want to say I’ve never been effected by this disease your wrong. My dad died of lung cancer, I’ve had friends die of it and as a matter of fact my wife is at the hospice right now with a friend that has panceatic cancer. She went to the hospital X-mas eve she wasn’t feeling well, two weeks later they removed her pancreas and part of her small intestine, a few says later they they put her in a nursing home and now their waiting for God to call her home. They expect her not to make it through the night. All that said organizations like this never have and never will get a dime from us.

We recently read with dismay that each year Komen gives $800,000 to Planned Parenthood and were pleased when that funding was pulled. Now we understand that the decision has been reversed and the funding will be restored.

This isn’t an anti-abortion issue. I think conservatives are against any tax dollars going to provide low cost health care to the poor. That’s money they could give to the richest among us. The Republican position, as I understand it, is that the that the United States of America shouldn’t give even a dollar toward providing health care for Americans in poverty, and neither should private organizations help the poorest among us receive help from a doctor if they have health problems. The Republicans say those people are on their own, and that any support for the poorest only “enslaves” them.

I heard someone say if I give you $20 with a stipulation that you can’t use it for x, and someone else gives you $20 with no stipulation, it frees up other money that you have. For instance let’s say you start with $20, then get 2 donations of $20. Now you have $60. You have a bill for abortion that costs $40, but you also have to pay the doctor $20. Problem solved. You use your $20, because the other person said you can’t use it for abortions, so you use theirs for the doctor.
I’ll bet the donations to Komen dropped dramatically when this story came out. So they came out and said, OK. we’ll stop. Their donations went through the roof. So they got their money, and then reversed their decision. Can you call and say, I want my money back? No, it’s already there. All you can do is say don’t use it for abortions. I’m glad I waited to show my support. I have stage 4 breast cancer and I won’t give a dime of my money to Komen. If they want my money for mammograms, they can start their own free clinics. If you want to help a breast cancer survivor do what my aunt did for me. She had over 200 friends on facebook and asked each one to give $2. Something does not add up when you follow your premise and look at the #’s. Either your premise is wrong or the numbers are.

How then, does that compare to the 3300 lives extinguished PER DAY by this barbaric practice. That’s right; in the USA last year there were more than 1.2 million abortions performed. So we have traded what … maybe a few thousand lives of truly serious life-threatening situations for a thousand times that of innocent babies.
You atheists must be truly sure there is no God. I hope you can sleep in your ignorance because you will pay a bitter price. Consider Pascal’s wager …

Posted on February 4, 2012 at 11:31pmBecause PP lies!! How crazy is to say they support saving women’s life, knowning this organization largest portion of business is exterminating life. I stopped buying anything pink, or supporting anything this organization did a couple of years ago when I found this out. Let them have a march in my hometown again, and watch the protesters come out. If this organization wants to do business with PP who is under investigation, then it should suffer the cost. There was film footage that indicated they cover up very young girls being abused, and do not report it to authorities. PP wants as little info as possible, so they can carry out their most profitable business of the day, which is abortions! PP refers women to other places for breast exams! I want to know WHO the 26 political members were that signed a letter to the Komen foundation requesting continuation in granting money to PP. Smacks of intimidation! If the Komen foundation wants to continue to spout that they want to save lives, yet continue to support an organization that takes life, then I hope donations dry up. But, I’m sure the socialist who wish to implore population reducation will continued to give money as long as Komen continues grant money to aid that goal! Makes me want to vomit!

Did it never occur to your freshly-thawed cro-magnon brain stem that maybe, just maybe, we find the concept of killing an unborn child unbearable? Why is that such a hard thing to grasp – or are you so devoid of empathy and compassion that you cannot extend a single feeling towards the most innocent and helpless among our species?
Abortion isn’t just murder, it is human sacrifice to the gods of convenience, apathy, and lust. Why should a child have to pay the ultimate price for the decision of one or both of the parents?
Report Post »Kankokage
Posted on February 3, 2012 at 2:34pmFurthermore, while abortion may be legal by judicial fiat, it goes against the foundational principles of our country. Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are all summarily denied the unborn child through abortion. There is absolutely no way to get around that fact. Even if one does not consider an unborn child of any post-conception developmental stage “alive”, the potential of that unborn child is still that of a viable, living, breathing human being. Artificially ripping that potential away through elective abortion is the same as denying the rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

Posted on February 3, 2012 at 11:43amI stopped contributing to Susan Komen when I found out they supported planned parenthood. I thought the Komen foundation was focused on breast cancer research and cures not abortions.

Margaret SangerAmong other things, she considered non-Aryan people unfit to breed and “a great biological menace to the future of civilization.” If she were alive today, I wonder what she’d think of Barack Obama, American’s first biracial president. Let’s speculate. His mother was white, and he was raised by whites. He attended Harvard and became president of the United States. I think she’d approve. But you never know.
We know what Sanger would think of Reverend Carlton Veazey, president and CEO of a group once known as the Religious Coalition for Abortion Rights, now disguised as the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice. “I support Planned Parenthood 100 percent,” he said.

Posted on February 3, 2012 at 12:31pmSandy, I too will withdraw my support of their stupid pink money laundering campaign and start giving to the Huntsman Institute instead. OZ, you are correct, it is far too difficult to trust anything these days. Makes for dangerous times and they want that. We have to keep digging and investigating and uncovering these scandals. I wonder how much of my families’ donations have gone to this abortion clinic instead of real cancer research. I’ve been skeptical for a long time that this Susan G. witch is nothing more than some marketing genius for pink ta ta crap than a true research funding charity. Susan G Komen, SCAMMER.
