Susan Sarandon Calls Pope Benedict a Nazi

Actress Susan Sarandon, who called the Pope a 'Nazi' over the weekend.

Another week, another Nazi controversy.

After Hank Williams Jr. stirred the pot by referencing Hitler earlier this month, now actress Susan Sarandon is raising eyebrows after calling the Pope a “nazi.” But whereas Williams’s comment was an analogy and not a comparison, Sarandon’s seems to be at best a misunderstanding of history and at worst an obvious comparison.

Sarandon made the remark during a Hamptons International Film Festival interview Saturday with actor Bob Balaban. Here’s how Newday, which first reported the exchange, reported it:

She was discussing her 1995 film “Dead Man Walking,” based on the anti-death-penalty book by Sister Helen Prejean, a copy of which she sent to the pope.

“The last one,” she said, “not this Nazi one we have now.” Balaban gently tut-tutted, but Sarandon only repeated her remark.

The outlet adds that it was “somewhat offhanded,” but given the fact that she repeated after being given the chance to recant, it does seem to pose some problems.

It’s worth pointing out that the Pope, Benedict XVI, does have a history with the Nazis. He was a member of the Hitler Youth as a child. But that’s only becuase he was forced to join.

The comments have been met with some apprehension. “[I]f the gaggle of celebs who have invoked Hitler’s name have taught us anything, it’s that comparing anyone to a Nazi is usually a bad idea,” writes Sarah Anne Hughes of the Washington Post. Newsday adds:

“Of all the places on largely Catholic Long Island, perhaps only in the Hamptons could Sarandon get a laugh with such a comment. She may have only used ‘Nazi’ to mean ‘dictatorial’ or ‘cold,‘ but it’s a dangerous word for public figures to throw around. In Cannes, after the director Lars von Trier randomly and jokingly called himself a Nazi, the French festival banned him and demanded an apology. He has since stopped talking to the media.”

We’ll see if any of her movies get pulled from TV.

      LOL, that could piss off some of the rocks. Okay, thought she was attractive when Rocky Horror Picture Show came out in ‘75. Being much younger then she just proved that youth and beauty often do not travel hand in hand with wisdom. Her problem is that wisdom just has not come along after all of these years. I’ve avoided her movies for the last couple of decades.

      Ashestoashes – I am sick of you trolls bashing the Catholic. Your ignorance is overwhelming. Jesus said to Peter – you are the rock and upon this rock I will build my church. And what do you call the man that your mother married? Should we not call one of our parents father? God is Father, and Jesus meant it in that context. Did you know that there is more sexual abuse in other faiths than in the Catholic Church, but the media never reports it. And, Dear God, the Pope is not the anti-christ. How absolutely stupid are you. Do not lump Catholics as poor uninformed people. Some of the most intelligent people are Catholic. If you don’t know what you are talking about and only pulling snipets of information out of some hole, keep your uninformated opinions to yourself. If you did a study of the Catholic faith you would see that the Sacraments and beliefs are based on Scripture.

      Your example of Peter as Pope is straight up garbage. God’s word shows that Peter was not Pope. Would you like all 10 or so passages showing just that? 

      And yes the Roman Catholic Church and it’s Pope is the Anti-Christ. God’s word shows us that as well. Would you like all 20-30 passages showing it to be true?

      Okie from Muskogee – Ashestoashes. Perhaps you both would consider reading “Surprised by Truth” by Scott Hahn. I believe he could clearly explain to you where your convictions about the Catholic Church are wrong and disspell all the erroneous concepts you both so stridently have stated far better than I could. Be very careful about your condemnation, you could be very wrong. Anyone can use Scripture and distort it to suit their agenda. Someone could use it against your religion and say to you both all that you have said about Catholics. You both sound arrogant.

      If memory serves me correct it’s a book over 11 converts to the Catholic faith? If so I have read it and found many misconceptions. 

      Condemnation no. Sharing truth, yes. Arrogant, no way. Humble and serving as told, yes. 

      You sound insecure of your own belief for you stated yourself you cannot explain well how our faith is incorrect. Do you not know what you believe and why? 

      The easiest example of false doctrine of your faith is Peter said to be Pope. The Bible clearly shows this to be false, a lie. Once seeing this one should understand the whole Catholic Church is based around a lie, built on sand. I will list the 10 scriptures showing Peter was not Pope and you can decide yourself. 

      We come not to condemn but to share truth. Do not be defensive for if your faith holds truth you should have zero concern and should be able to show our faith false thru God’s Word. If anything we will only confirm your faith if we are wrong. You could be very wrong though and I sense that is what scares you.

      To say the Roman Catholic Church is not bible based is incorrect. The Catholic Church is bible-based and tradition based. During the celebration of the Mass, the first reading is from the Old Testament, followed by a Responsorial Psalm, a second reading from the New Testament and ending with final reading which is a proclamation of the gospel. We then celebrate the life of Jesus, mourn His death and celebrate His resurrection.

      Many Protestants have difficulty with the idea that the Church also recognizes tradition in addition to the Bible. I think all Christian Churchs have traditions that are no expressly stated in the Bible. A simple tradition is the order of worship in a church. In most Christian churches, the order of worship follows a clear and consistent order. This order is somehow formalized and is followed each service. This is tradition.

      To my Protestant friends, just as you have decided that your beliefs are the only true faith, we Catholics believe our’s is. The important point is that we are engaged in a war with Islam and we need our common points to unite us if we are to prevail.

      By the way, this useful idiot does not speak for the Catholic population. In my parish, the congregation is very conservative.

      Much of Catholic doctrine can be shown not Bible based. Would you like me to go into details? First start with Peter said to be Pope. That is straight up a lie and not found in the Bible at all. Worship how you wish. I will do the same and am simply sharing truths as I know them with you. If you we do not hold the same belief, we do not worship the same God/Jesus. I hope you understand that. No offense is ever intended.
      If “WE” are at war with Islam why has Islam not bombed the Vatican or call it the Great Satan? Why has the Pope, if leader of all “Christian” faiths, not been targeted by Islam? Isn’t Rome a lot closer and easier target then the USA? Do research over the roots of Islam as shown by Ashes above. Then you will know why Rome and the Pope are never attacked.

      Following the posting string on this site is a pain. From all your postings that I have read over time I know you hold deep faith in Jesus and worship in a way that is most meaningful to you. I do the same. In time each of us will find out. I pray that each of us is “right”. I believe that Jesus is the salvation. One of the hardest things to do is to debate faith since it is so personal. I fully understand you have your truths. I have mine. Today I have made the decision to never defend my faith and to protect the faith of others. I may be a Catholic but I am also an American. I believe in religious freedom. Know that if anyone tries to destroy your faith I will stand with you.

      That I can respect. Its hard for most to discuss faith differences for both sides fear to be wrong. Words on a screen leave an open door for interpretation that could be meant completely different if heard with tone. Knowing this we must put our pride and fear aside and still seek truth and share it for otherwise we are hiding our light under a bushel.

      I liked the movie “The Witches of Eastwicke”. I can’t imagine watching it now. I just wouldn’t be able to enjoy it with her destestable presence in it.

      DTOM JERICHO…while the Nazi Party may have intiially started as a coalition of workers groups it quickly morphed into something else that was the antithesis of socialism. It was a brutal, totalitarian regime that thumbed its nose at egalitarian principles upon which traditional socialism is, at least in part, based. I cringe every time I hear someone try to argue that Nazism was socialism simply because it had the word in its name.

      Descendant of 56 Yes that is true. I have many very innocent friends who are Catholic. They are fine people. born and raised in the Catholic Church. But lets talk about the priests and the Pope for instance. Who on this earth has ever sat as an intercessory in the place of Jesus Christ between the people and God? It speaks at the end..that there will be one who sits in the Temple and demands that the Jews worship him as God. Who on this earth could ever do such a thing? Who is called Father here on this earth in a Spiritual sense when Jesus said to call no man Father…except for God? Also the bible says to pray for all sinners, but there is one sin it says not to pray for.(as if it does no good) and then it says “Littlle children..keep yourselves from idols.” The young Catholics have demanded the Bible in English..So here’s hopng that they discover the truth. They are wonderrful people..

      What is the Pope anyways? He isn‘t the Vicar Of Christ because he didn’t leave anyone behind as his Vicar. The Pope is really the head of all religions. St. Peter’s Basilica is really the Pantheon and all the statues of the “Saints” are really the “gods” of all the pantheistic religions of the world. The Pope as about as “Christian” as Obama. He names the name of Christ but has none of his power or authority. He is a symbol of the pride of man; the epitome of man’s foolishness; a gross affront to God. So as long the Pope continues to press his headship over Christianity his a Nazi in as much as the Nazis pressed their headship over the “purity” of their “Aryan” race. The Jews are still God’s chosen people. The Catholic Church and Christianity never replaced the Jews. The Catholic church oppressed the Jews in Europe as much as the Nazis did. Individuals may have defended and sheltered them but as an institution, the Roman Catholic church persecuted the Jews. So love your Nazi demon possessed Pope and share his bed with him.

      Not so fast. You argue that the NSWP morphed into a right wing movement because it dropped “some” of the principles of socialism. The same argument must be made for communism as well then. A movement cannot change from leftist to rightest unless it is a different movement altogether. You are suggesting the NSWP was socialist “in name only”; that is utter nonsense. The NSWP indeed supported a command economy based on state ownership and control of all major industry AND promoted the welfare state. You cannot cut ties to it because they stopped lying about their true ambitions and you radicals have not. You have been exposed for what you are; no amount of poop tossing can change that.       Bud, you need to really crack a book and study some real history instead of the drivel so many professors are spewing these days. Hitler did socialize the nation of Germany in the purest sense of the definition of the word. Just because he was a socialist did not mean that he had to be a nice socialist as so many left wing looks want to believe today. Furthermore this crap of calling Hitler a right winger is a bunch of bull. Going back to the ancient Greeks’ description of left and right wing forms of government is a simple graph. The left means larger government while the right means less. Too far to the right is no government or pure anarchy, while too far to the left is totalitarianism. This was also picked up by the Romans and used to describe their form of democratic government, but they did try to avoid the Greeks’ failure at using pure democracy. Some people found a way to vote themselves into the purses of others. The use of this graph was still used by the post French Revolution government and well defined their Parliament.       Hey RANGERP, loved your come back at No Lumbar Spine. But what in the world do you mean by Hitler forming a right winged angle at socialism. By true definition those two phrases contradict each other. Unfortunately the media and scholars (and I use that term loosely) have tried to smear the right by calling Hitler’s form of government as right winged, but nothing could be further from the truth. My son knew this and while still in high school argued this point with a few of his teachers daring them to look up the meaning of left and right winged for the real answer. At 21 he gives some of his college instructors a bit of hell. But, he is nice about it.

      I think “right wing” is in reference to the two sided track of socialism, Communism and Fascism. Both are Socialist and one is on the left and the other is right and they battle over which government they will be.

      Claiming to be a particular religion and actually embracing and practicing that religion are two VERY DIFFERENT things!

      If someone was baptized in a particular faith as a baby, it is popular to claim that is their religion unless they have made a point of stating otherwise. Many, many people in show business, politics, and probably a goodly number of your neighbors “think” they are Roman Catholic (or one of the other national Catholic sects such as Coptic or Marikanite Catholics), believe that if they are “sprinkled (Baptism),“ ”matched” (wed) and “dispatched (buried) in the Church that makes them PART of that church. However, as we teach young children today in religious formation classes, “What ”makes“ a Sacrament work”? The correct answer is, “The INTENTION not the specifically the ACTION.”

      Roman Catholicism, unlike many other faiths, is NOT A CAFETERIA RELITION! There are absolutes, they are specified in the Creed (Nicene) and must ALL BE EMBRACED to be a “Catholic in Good Standing.” In today’s age it is refreshing to have a Church (realizing that all church are made up of sinners, that’s why Jesus died for us), that teaches continually, as it understands at a given time, from those basics.

      Yea, I think some folks on here get confused with terms. European right wing is not American/Repbulican/tea party right wing.

      You basically have two flavors of socialims over in europe. You have the communist on the left, and the fascist on the right. I am not a fan of either.

      I think some on here are also confused with socialism and communism. Communism is a form or type of government, where socialism is an economic system. Communist governments use the socialist form of economics.

      I am quite informed of my faith. 

      The Catholic Church did not write the Bible.
      The Catholic Church corrupted worship of God leading to Protests. Those protests led back to worship as seen BEFORE the Catholic Church. Therefore without the Catholic Church we never would have needed to Protest for we worship now as they did before the corrupt roman Catholic Church tried to hijack all worship of God.  Something to ponder!

      4XGrace – You couldn’t be more wrong in your comments about the Catholic faith. We do not worship statues. Just as people carry photos of those they love, statues are only reminders of saints. Just as we ask friends to pray for us, we ask saints to use their intercessory prayers to Jesus for us. The Pope didn’t abandon the Jews. He was afraid to intervene for fear of making it worse for the Jews. Read accurate history to find the truth. People love to make a demon of the Pope and I find it extremely disturbing. It does nothing but show your ignorance and lack of historical information.
      Most of these anti-Catholic comments are lies and distortions. If you really hate the Catholic Church that much, then study the Catholic beliefs from authentic Catholic books and come back and make a better argument on facts.

      @ OKIE FROM MUSKOGEE, Did some reading on the subject a few years ago. The left and right versions of government are defined as I stated. Over the past couple of decades there has been a purposely attempt at calling Hitler a right winger merely to smear our right. You can easily look up online descriptions of socialism, communism, and fascism. When compared you will likely be surprised to see how they are related. Look up the propaganda posters made by the Soviets and the Nazis during WWII. You will see an amazing similarity in not only the pictures but also the slogans. According to John Toland’s thousand plus page book on Hitler, he did not go to war with Russia because he hated communism, he hated the Jews who developed communism in Germany. Hitler wanted to conquer all of Europe. Both the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany socialized their businesses and farms. The Germans just did it in a more intelligent way. Unlike the Russians they did not kill off the people who knew how to make things and grow food. Otherwise, their forms of government were almost identical in function.

      Once we get to Totalitarianism   there is two sides of the spectrum within it isn’t there? Communism and Fascism with both using Socialism (Collective) instead of “evil” capitalism (individualism)…

      I agree with Nazism hating Communism because of Jews (Marx) being the “creator” of that movement. Both movements competed for Labor and Nazism was National Pride blaming foreigners as the problems while Communism was a strive for classlessness regardless of nationality..

      No. I’m in favor of the death penaaty. I’m a practicing catholic and my loyalty is to the catholic church. I believe the pope should excommunicate all catholics who publicaly take a pro abortion stand. They are knowingly and wilfully disobeying the vicar of Christ on earth.They are undermining Christ and His church. if and when the pope were to declare that the death penalty is infallibly wrong then I would cease to publicaly express support for it, though my conscience still would be in favor of it. but I would submit to obedience to the Church by keeping that position to myself. That the chuirch has been complicit with evil is of course not surprising since people are fallible and sinful. Even a pope.Tthat does not negate or take away from the church on earth as holding the key to the truths about God’s saving love for all people. The fullness of revelation is contained in the church-irrespective of individuals or instituional sins and crimes.

      I already have for the most part. I do not go to the movies. I only purchase c/ds from artist that are Patriots. (mostly country) I refuse to watch any program once it starts getting digs in about conservatives or pushes progressive agendas. I no longer buy magazines and I block progressive channels from dish network. So obviously I am limited as far as watching tv is concerned. Sarandon has always been a far left extremeist and a radical. She better be careful with her remarks.       That is the most accurate comment of all. These hollowood morons feel that since they are enormously overpaid for their silly efforts, that people give a **** about what they think and say. I prefer animated cartoons since the actors are much more likeable and intelligent than she and her ilk.

      Precisely! Why do we care what Actors think? In reality they’re no different than we are. The exception is they are paid to act like something they are not. I am not a Catholic and I don’t ever plan to be one. I simply think it’s time these movie actors need to stay in the movies!
